I saw George playing a racist deputy in an episide of The Twilight Zone. The guy had serious acting chops. In fact, he usually played a heavy on TV. After AG, he was typecast, which was a shame.

Happens so often, there is a personal tension about wanting to move on, yet coming to grips and enjoying the fame the role brought you. In one interview I remember George said he had regrets, but looking at his bank account with the Goober money helped him look past the regrets, lol.

I grew up in Mayberry. That's what we called it. We got a traffic light in the80s and the traffic was so light the state removed it. Anyway a petition was circulated to "Bring Back The Traffic Light" with T shirts and everything... Our Sherrif didn't wear a gun and kept all his duck hunting gear in the trunk of the Sheriff's car. The Sheriff's office was a small room in the courthouse and the original police station was LITERALLY a phone booth by the park. They built an actual jail and Police station and all in the late 80s I think. We had the only courthouse in GA that allowed smoking and when I asked why I was told " it's a historical building so we can't tear it down but if it was to catch fire the state would build us a new one."
    Ellaville GA
Wish I was back there now.

George Lindsey is far from the only actor to lose out on a role. Suzanne Somers auditioned for Charlie's Angels. Farrah Fawcett got the role. Tom Selleck lost out on Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was committed to Magnum PI. Thankfully things worked out for all of them.
One book had George claiming that he later got offered the part of Dud Wash. If so, it's a good thing he turned that part down. Jim Nabors was better to play the very naive Gomer. Goober seemed to be a little bit more knowledgeable, at least on cars. My personal theory is that Goober and Wally worked with Gomer in that area. Both played their parts for several years. Gomer got his own series. Goober continued with Mayberry RFD. Next came Hee Haw and an unsold pilot.

I read about that in the Andy & Don book. I can understand Lindsey's disappointment, but it's not uncommon in the business for a thing like that to happen. He guested as Goober on the Gomer Pyle spinoff, visiting Gomer at the base, so I'm guessing he had processed his feelings by the time he agreed to that guest role.

My grandfather lived in Granite city Illinois, where they were opening a restaurant called George Lindsay’s. The sign for the restaurant had a picture of George Lindsey as goober wearing that beanie that he always wore. George Lindsey was at the grand opening and was signing autographs. My grandfather asked him to sign it as Goober. That set him off. He went into a rant about how he hated that character and that he was sick of people only remembering him as that character. He wouldn’t sign the autograph and was very rude. I don’t think he was appreciative of the role he received and quite frankly, I don’t think he deserved it. I would not have believed it had I not seen it for myself as a young boy of about 11 years old. I was very disappointed as he was always one of my favorite characters on the show.

I feel the same. I tolerate him in some of the colored episodes only because they are so bad that anyone is better than Howard, Emmett and Warren. 😂

@@robsimpson6537 "it was. That’s why I thought it was memorable" I agree, rob. The fact that impressions are so far off sometimes is actually what makes them so hilarious. Goober thinking he had Cary Grant down even while doing it horribly just made me crack up hard. I loved that particular episode with the Fun Girls. Great humor!

Jim Nabors was a great talent, I remember hearing a recording of him singing some ballad or a song from a piece of classical music, he was a crooner as well. But Lindsey should have worked on the set of Green Acres, perhaps as a side kick to Mr. Haney (Pat Butrum? )

My favorite episodes seem to involve Ernest T Bass. ...He' a Nut !!
But the episode with the State Police chasing a fugitive and ole Andy just casually watching him steal a boat on the lake, making his getaway.
Sargent, if you and your men just walk on down to the lake you can pick up your prisoner.
....as the boat begins to sink and the escapee swims right back to the back and into the arms of the Sargent. Ha.
