Honestly I've always hated how all smartphone video looks like it was shot at F25 lol. I didn't actually think about the fact that you could force some depth into your shot with lighting. This shit looks so professional and the lack of depth of field is made up for with the dynamic lighting.
Love this video, thanks so much for showing that you can get really pro results from a Smartphone. The big mystery for me is how to get that "cinematic look" - which you totally have and I can't seem to get at all. I have the LG V50, I'm shooting at 4k @ 24fps and have good lighting but my stuff still doesn't look cinematic at all. How do you do it? Are there settings on your phone or do you do it all in post (Adobe Premiere, etc). Any tips you have would be SUPER appreciated! Thanks!!
No joke! When the video started I was like...seriously ?! This guy is talking about hot to make video look good and his footage looks like THIS?!...I almost abandoned the video.
You know what is the most coincidence thing... I was thinking to shoot my first A roll today, of course with an old smartphone, cuz that is only i own... And this pop up on my notification... Thank to you bro.. you are at the right time in providing the info.. 😍💯
Dude this is exactly what I was looking for!! I was actually trying to do what you did in your $300 camera video but with a smartphone and couldn’t get the same results. Thank you so much for this video. You’re my saviour 🙌
This should be mandatory viewing for everyone who has to appear on TV via Zoom or other app. There's so many awful looking live interviews on the news and other shows where they do everything wrong.
Hello Thank you for your awesome video . As i can see your skin is look like hollywood movie i mean that hollywood soft look which is so hard to get by smartphone because smartphone is filming over sharp , i saw your video with and without color grading and in both video your soft hollywood look exists. my question is that soft hollywood look is because of that 38 dollars soft light or you did something else also ? Or do you have any other secret . I will be greatful if you answer me because i want to make a short video clip but I can’t buy dslr camera . Thank you
I was considering buying a lumix g7 or canon 60d, but since i'm a youtube beginner in video filming / editing, a better camera won't help me with poor video content and editing. I can still shoot up to 4k on my phone, but I don't see much difference between the 1080s. And this video helps me to remind me that lighting is the most important thing :) I better invest money in lighting
Thanks Nigel. I am trying to create the right setup for me at the moment. Planning on using the iPhone or my old Canon 550D to start off. You had great tips on the basics in you video. That will definitely improve my setup already.
I am learning how to improve my videos, I have a GH5 and I can’t get a good looking video as yours on an iPhone, you’re a beast! I was doing video on my iPhone until a month ago... Now, that is the second video I watch from you and it is always top notch!
wow, very. very. very. helpful. I literally just started my channel and this is so much value for a noob! Also, I never studied anything related to photography or lighting but you are so easy to follow! thanks!
Wow! Thank you for this video. I really like filming with a phone but I struggle always for the quality of my videos because of the lighting. I never tried to lower the iso of the camera app I'm using. Definitely gonna practice what you did here.
I made a similar video a couple of weeks back but didn’t post it because the moment app doesn’t seem to be free anymore. My video was more about the app than the techniques. I think they changed the price 😔
So awesome this is exactly what I was looking for. Was panicking since i don't want to drop 1000 dollars on a camera when i have a phone with a "good" camera
Does this work for items too and if not can you make a tutorial on how to film items with a mobile phone? For example for when you're doing a DJ set or playing piano and want to show the item rather than yourself.
Yeah, it's $5.99 now on iOS, with in-app purchases, which means you don't get the whole thing for that money. There are other apps that just give you manual control for that kind of money and no IAP.
I'm wondering if you can get the same great results wanting to have a setup full of light, instead of a dark one? Do you have any tips for a low budget setup with colours like white/grey? Thanks!
Hey Nigel, very helpful video. I was wondering though, are you in a room without any daylight coming in there? 'Cause the rest of the room looks rather dark. The thing is, I have some windows of which I can't block the daylight completely. Should I try to use that daylight to my advantage or is it better to still try and block the light somehow?
No there's no daylight coming in, I used $15 blackout curtains I got at walmart to make my room dark during the day if that's not an option, I'd say wait till nightfall to record. Hope that helps!
This is an awesome video Nigel. Its very helpful for those who dont have "x" amount of dollars to create video, because you show them how. I would be interested in seeing a video on how to create lighting for headshot. Such as a corporate headshot.
Watched a couple of your lighting videos now and they're great! Especially this one as I shoot with my smart phone. Taking your advice on lighting with this, thanks! Interested in how you framed everything up when using rear camera on a smart phone? Always makes my process longer and frustrating 😒 Thanks Subbed 👊
great video! Subscribed :) Just be careful screwing in those big CFL bulbs, if you hold them by the glass they break easy, hold the base. I have a set that are getting close to 5 years old now haha the bulbs are starting to age a bit😂

I came here from end card of previous video and now again another end card is attracting me ....Lovely videos you make...thanks
I love videos like this. It’s not the equipment - it’s how you use it. Thanks for making this ✌️
No joke! When the video started I was like...seriously ?! This guy is talking about hot to make video look good and his footage looks like THIS?!...I almost abandoned the video.
Love this Nigel!! As a mobile filmmaker, I just went with the phone I had and love it! Thanks for looking out for the small guys!
so the key is lighting right?
And in the editing as well
Always!!
drum thump.
And key lights
The ability to use your hands to properly set up lights and finding the perfect exposure

perfect, exactly what I was looking for, thanks. A wide angle clip on lense always helps a lot in a small space.
