Yippity yay I got a cookie!
Thank you I'm hungry and had to eat that guy with the half yellow and blue shirt
Thx man
I love how the boss has 3 voices
The jolly one
The texan
And the va's regular voice
Don't go cross the rickety bridge...
The Texan one makes me smile every time - “yup, prolly cause of all them worms I ate up earlier”
"...I _really_ hurt my finger doing that paperclip bit."
You forgot his demonic voice
WAIT!
@@harryfromendsmy favorite quote
My headcanon is that he’s a veteran and has suffered a lot of physiological damage and has dedicated his life to making people smile as a result
“Hey man you’re trynna mess with me, get out of my head”
Get out of my head get out of my head man get out of my head
Yeah when I first saw the theory that he's a 'Nam vet that's completely lost it I was immediately hooked.
Isn't he the guy from the "no biting" video? Which would mean he was abused as a child, particularly head injuries, that could have lead to psychological problems
He served in every war for the past 200 years
Bro founded the Smiling Friends, and in his darkest moment he chose to make someone smile instead of kill them. He might be fucking nuts, but he’s the boss for a reason. 👊
Agreed! He’s the very definition of a hero, albeit an incredibly weird one
@@harryfromends an antihero
and now he owns 1/4 of hell, each chapter they make him stronger and I hope it keeps going
Bros got that momentum
which episode is that even from??
@@hengedrawsseason 2, episode 4
@@stinkler2000 thank you! I guess I missed that part somehow lol
He'll be the final boss.
Im really glad with the direction they went with the boss. It would’ve been so easy to make him an irredeemable moron in any other show, but no, he really seems like a genuinely nice person. It’s somehow more funny that way. Instant subscription
They made him a deranged crazy man, but one who has his heart in the right place.
He's not the stereotypical idiot crazy guy either. He might be an insane cartoon character of a man who hallucinates Ronald Reagan to give him advice, but he seems like a genuinely competent person
@@mythcat1273He made the frowning friends smile, he's amazing at his job
Chaotic neutral
I theorize that he didn’t escape or pay his way out of the asylum, but that he instead made the building next to it because he knew there would be a lot of people struggling and he wanted to make things better for them
That makes sense honestly:/
yoo, maybe the smiling friends is almost like a crisis center, like not as severe as an asylum but people can still get help for mental health thru them...
I like how the Boss immediately swapped to his sane personality and tried to help Grim as soon as he started crying. It shows that he values people's happiness more than anything else, and even when someone he was just moments away from slaughtering in cold blood started sobbing, he was still willing to help them smile. That's proof enough for me that the Boss is a good character. He might be wacky, eccentric, even a little insane, but his heart's always in the right place.
He lets his good nature overpower the darkness in his head
Agreed! The Boss is certainly unhinged, but his good natured side is his default mode, everything else is just a flitting moment of madness
grade school has given you way too much brain damage
A little is an understatement 😭
@@LumpyBumpyAcidFish are you in the right comment section?
It’s funny to me that Mr. Boss is obscenely wealthy but was willing to kill after losing $10k on a bet
Hey. He was down 2.4 billion there for a bit. Gotta recover somehow.
2.4 billion doesn't put him in debt so he must have practically infinite money. I think he just really doesn't like losing, that's why he snapped. Screw the money, he'll do anything for the dub.
In my opinion the "red eyes" thing denotes a state of violent mania rather than being evil.
The first time I realized the boss was putting serious payment into the smiling friends was as far back as episode one. The smiling friends frequently take their clients to places like theme parks or restaurants, and it seems clear that the budget for those things must be included for the jobs
So, what you're saying is... If in the Brazil episode, they found a client in Brazil, the boss actually WOULD easily pay for their stay?
That and the entire office was destroyed and ransacked in episode one, only to be completely patched up in episode two like the repairs were less than a week.
@@leritykay8911 I mean it's not like he wasn't gonna pay for them in Brazil, the guys just decided on their own that they didn't want to ask the Boss for any more money than he gave them for the trip. All he did was tell them he had no connections in Brazil and that they chose the worst time to go. Honestly i think he wouldve paid for them either way
I would never pass up the opportunity to have a little Mr. Boss figure, or plush. SMILING FRIENDS PLUSHIES-
I would 100% collect every smiling friends plushie, especially The Boss
Marketable Glep plush
OR THE PUPPETS
“if we ever make smiling friends funko pops, please destroy them on camera. smash Pim apart with a hammer and post it online”
Or the mini boss
I love how The Boss constantly switches from 3 fingers to 4 fingers on his hand.
4-5*

@@JomasterTheSecondaww, you two are so cute 🖇️
I think seeing the boss have his inner struggle with the mirror made him more likeable in my opinion. He clearly wanted to do the right thing, and when he made grim smile at the end it made me realize why he's the boss of smiling friends. He's a pro at making people smile
I’m honestly surprised he didn’t mention it in the video. What Pim, Charlie and Allan do once per episode he nailed in 10 seconds
To me mr. boss is sort of a characture of the weird, uncomfortable but also kinda sweet relationship that you can have about a manager when they actually care about you.
I think something that sort of helps your reasoning is how all of the Smiling Friends seem like they live pretty comfortably. We've seen glimpses of Pim and Allan's appartments, and they legit look REALLY cozy and boarderline upper class (Allan's crazy landlord not withstanding, but that isn't the Boss' fault). The exception is the peep we got at Charlie's, but I think that's just more his lifestyle than anything. They have good tech, video games, they go to movies, saved up for a big trip to Brazil, no one on the team has ever seen like they're in any kind of financial trouble. The boss genuinely seems to take good care of them.
That’s very true, the Smiling Friends all live at least somewhat comfortably, with trips to China and Brazil throughout the show! Personally, I’d love the boss as my boss ahaha
I think it really helps show off the theme of optimism in the show. I feel like a lot of adult oriented shows use the trope of the asshole boss at the miserable job with miserable pay, and as realistic as that might be, it's genuinely uplifting seeing Mr. Boss being kind to and taking care of his employees and paying them well
The fact that the Boss is one of the richest men in the world does man it very funny that he hemmed and hawwed and acted like he had no way to help them out during the Brazil Trip. He could have bought a vacation home just for that, if he didn't have one already.
@@harryfromends wait when did they go to China? Idk why I don't remember that.
@@egg_bun_ Post credits scene of the Saltys episode.
he pointed a loaded weapon at a guy's face and still made that same guy smile. he truly is the Mr. Boss of Smiling Friends.
6:09 Crazy that Mr Boss can just kill someone at 16% like that
S-Tier character banned in all Smiling Smash Bros competitive play
They should’ve never added Crits to a character who already has a tipper mechanic
The fact he’s surprisingly the most wholesome character whilst also sometimes the most terrifying is genius
he was the original smiling friend. it’s why he was able to cheer grim up so easily. it proves he’s not only passionate about his work, but actually good at what he has his employees do. that’s a good boss.
They honestly got the best voice actor for the boss in my opinion. Sick Animation killed it with his talents lol, couldn’t imagine anyone else voicing the boss
The boss is genuinely a good guy, even if he seems prone to uh.... fits
What I like most about Mr Boss is the fact that, despite being a wild card in most other situations, he’s a genuinely good boss to the smiling friends employees and seems to actually care about them as people. Contrast to other bosses in cartoons where the comedy mainly comes from them either being incompetent or out right assholes, especially towards their employees.
I loved boss's confrontation with Grim. It felt like it completely subverted the expectations of the usual shock-humour of shows like Rick and Morty, we're used to seeing people talk calmly to someone, talk them out of violence, humanize them, and then boom, surprise, they mercilessly slaughter them anyway. But they keep Boss consistently a nice guy, and instead the Renaissance men show up lol
Mr Boss is someone I would genuinely love to have as a friend. Any time he's acted weird, it's not because the show is weird or has weird characters, it's because there was a genuine reason or he was joking. He feels like a real character. Even when he bent his finger like a paperclip, it would have been so easy to have him do that just to be weird, but he reacted to his injury saying it was a "bit" which meant he was doing it as a joke and not because he's just a weird guy. I love how this character is written. It feels real
I love the fact that this video was probably made before ep 5. Where he joked about making Jared from Subway smile. 😂
im sorry what
I get the feeling he genuinely thought it'd make Pim and (especially) Charlie laugh, and wasn't able to read the room properly until he noticed no feedback on the actual job, which then prompted him to do the dog face to at least get one of them to laugh somehow
It was 😭 this video took ages to edit ahaha
@@GardenVarietea i liked the dog face.
@@jivanhoyt6520 It was kinda low hanging fruit..
What does someone have to do to be considered for the psych ward in this world. Everyone is crazy in this world.
suicide attempts most commonly
Probably be normal.
Hang out with your tenants and smoke weed and fill your bellies with diet soda and play Burnout Revenge on the PS2
He don’t get much screen time but we he do he don’t disappoint
True, he’s gotten more in season 2 thus far and I’ve really enjoyed his moments on screen, with the Gwimbly episode being by my favourite! (I mean the whole episode is just incredible and the Boss compliments it perfectly)
We NEED an episode centered around Mr Boss, if Alan got his own episode so can Mr Boss
Good news!
they heard you sucho!!
I bet in a future episode the Boss will definitely kill someone
He did help kill the Forrest demon
He killed one of the frowning friends
He was this close to shooting Grim and Gnarly, assisted in the forest demon's death, and likely went off to start a shooting after Jimble lost. He will definitely end up killing someone soon.
Yep, guess he’s OOGILY GOO!
Probably cause of all them worms he ate up earlier
9:45 Or he owns that too. Having multiple ventures close to each-other might explain how he's able to be so active in just one of them despite being worth billions.
And if he's invested in multiple avenues of mental health treatment, it might also explain why the appearance of the Frowning Friends could hurt his net worth so much, since the Frowning philosophy is essentially to give up on improving mental health.
This is a theory I can absolutely get behind, and makes 100% sense! I believe they’ll explore this in a future episode (at least, I hope so ahaha)
Mr Boss' eyes going red while laughing is a reference to one of Zach's hypotheticals to Tomar
The boss now canonically owns a quarter of hell.
The rich get richer baby 😎
I wonder what 1/4th of hell is worth?
@harryfromends an eternity's worth of rent I guess 🤷🏻
@@AgniFirePunchSo that means Mr. Boss literally has an infinite amount of money.
The Boss is Chaotic Good
His methods are questionable but his heart is in the right place (most of the time)
The Boss' eyes make me laugh whenever i look at them.
They look like when a dog gives you the side eye.
Or maybe he's just bipolar due to past trauma which is why he founded the smiling friends so he responds to anything threatening his business with drastic measures so he's not really evil he's just *afraid of failure*
I love this weird man one of the best aspects of the show
I always view the Boss as what if Pops from Regular Show followed in his adoptive father Mr. Maellard's footsteps
And then The Boss topped all of his previous scenes in the brothers egg episode
That was low hanging fruit
And when he learned that's there's no such thing as a bad culture in the magical jewel episode
Mr. Boss might be the first actually genuinely nice/kind boss character I've seen in any tv show or movie
I think benson is one to be honest the only bad thing i remember him doing was eating Mordecai and Rigbys burgers
The thing I find so dynamic about the smiling friends cast is that they all embody different versions of optimism. They are all down to their core, good people but express it in different ways. That’s why they’re the smiling friends
Surprised you didn't mention the voice actor. I don't remember his name, but the voice actor really adds to Mr. Boss's character. Love his inflections and has random country accent sometimes.
I think it’s mark m. I can’t remember or be bothered to look it up but I know he runs the sick animation yt channel which coincidentally makes me smile
I absolutely would love and cherish a little version of him
I like how the baby looks just like Charlie but is Pim colored
Mr boss is like creed from the office
Doesn’t get much screen time but makes it up in the performance
Kind of psychotic with a supernatural temper but well meaning and kind
I'm just glad Mark M. is getting the recognition he deserves.
It's good but I hope he doesn't get "canceled"
A lot of his stuff is not PC
Also he did get to make some Adult Swim bumpers a few years ago if you remember
Sometimes Mr boss gives me meatcanyon vibes 😂
I think its cool how fast mr boss gets grim to smile. it really shows why he's the boss of the company he's genuinely really good, he got it done in like 15 seconds.
we got fucking video essays on smiling friends, it is so over
we hebben een serieus probleem
Why is it over? More like it’s starting
@@Jerry-ej9hn video essays are made by people with no talent and need to rely on others work to create something. if smiling friends is popular enough to attract these kinds of people, its not too unreasonable to find that the public perception of the show itself will flatline, as people will get (and already are) sick of it being shoved in their faces. see rick and morty.
@@BalsamicJeebs Ok what I said was mostly a joke but I do agree, I hope it doesn’t turn out like Rick and morty
@@Jerry-ej9hn worst part is rick and morty was pretty good until it found a large audience of people who overrate it.
The Boss is the best character ever created in adult animation hands down.
The Boss is probably my least favorite Smiling Friend by a decent margin but he really does have some great jokes here and there. My favorite so far is probably the mini boss reward.
I like him. He is a quirky character with the capacity of evil but chooses to be good
The boss is the funniest guy i know. He should do standup.
Maybe not standup. It's different you know
@@vlco_o Yeah no, i mean yeah. It's different.
woah red eye theory- the devil in s1 finale has red eyes too.
Huh I wonder why 🤔
The forest demon has blue eyes
Yeah that’s very true! I feel as though the red eye theory will be played with by Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel as the show progresses, and will perhaps be a way of fooling us into thinking someone is initially evil
This should've just been a video on Sick Animation himself. My guy understands the culture
It's his créative outlet, I think. The asylum has prob an outlet, like a painting studio or some woodwork shop, some midweek fun. Maybe it's his...cause of the money this will be his creative outlet, as his own little nest of safety. The asylum knows this and sees it as good. Or maybe not.
Smiling friends is his Smiling friend and helper.
something that i like about the boss is that they did not make him a ugly character
i mean it like you can see he takes care of his looks, he dresses well (mostly), most of his facial flaws like his wrinkles or hair loss are because of his age and i imagine he takes care of his face 0:09 5:09 , he exercises and you can tell by the scenes where he is shirtless that he is good.
most of the ugly parts of him are just his sudden personality changes or being a old half naked guy which are kinda common for the show
The "No biting" reference to the original makes me think that his dad used to abuse him when he was young, and that might be why he turned out half insane, but he's gone through great lengths to break the cycle of a abuse so it never happens to anyone else
If nobody wears an outfit like that to my funeral, they netter bury me in one
Interesting that the baby homunculus has Charlies features and Pims skin color...
And that's why he's their favorite character, The Boss.
There's zero doubt in my mind they set up the red eyes with the pasta as a nod to creepy pasta. Because it's definitely a little nuance Internet joke that Zach and Michael would make
He's some kind of eldritch being trying to fit in and be good but makes mistakes on how to be human
The red eyes are more likely to be a artistic way of denoting anger or madness (usually newground animators do this, and, surprise, the animation house of SF is formed by newground animators)
the boss is quite literally a riddle wrapped in an enigma
BUT WAIT!! Excellent vid, sir, but I can't fully agree with James due to being an expert on violent tsuderes😅
I love how his voice and accent changes every scene lol
fun fact the creators stated that there are 4 races/species in the world. humans critters enchanted forest creatures and demons. mr frog was confirmed as one of the few demon characters. maybe the boss also is 🤔
ok what about the shrimp tho
Marc's Boss character is so fuckin good, I love Sick Animations.
"Is the boss a psychotic villain, or a lovable hero?" YES. YES HE IS.
I always saw the boss as a character that represents MeatCanyon videos, his characteristics and appearance reflect that of MeatCanyon, especially with the breatfeeding. This makes sense because MeatCanyon is a Newgrounds animator and Smiling Friends takes inspiration from Newgrounds stuff.
Dude the boss is probably like the funniest guy i know
Honestly the boss is my absolute favorite in the last episode of the second season. He’s so giddy and loves his boys so much
Mr. Boss is unexplainable.. he’s not good for the sake of having a pure heart, and he’s not evil just for the sake of “i’m bad” he just kinda exists and does whatever pops into his head.. follows them intrusive thoughts
I see the boss as once a evil person, but something changed his outlook and now he wants to help people.
1:39 It's also the same color as Pim.
One things for sure he's pretty good at DDR
Mr Boss is probably the funniest guy I know
2:32 James got a redemption at the end of his episode, deep down in him there's an unloved man, with feelings and a heart 😥
I think the boss was always like this and that’s why he’s rich and that’s why the asylum is next door it’s all in his head
This is what I would do if I was mega wealthy, just make people smile and pay people to hang out with me
I'm sort of disappointed that the Boss isn't a critter like Pim, Charlie, Allan or Glep. But he's not fully human either. It's like a weird in-between the other human characters who are all somewhat normal, but he's got a big bobble head. It's... Unseemly.
Perhaps the boss was one of the only normal people in the SF universe but went insane with all the crazy shit that's going on
I love this character so much. His timid and silly voice coming out of that oversized head will never not make me giggle
What i really like about the boss is the despite being the only human one in the group, hes also the weirdest while the other smiling friends members are non human but the most normal
I think with the red-eyes, based off of stuff Zach has done with the show and other shorts, people’s eyes change red when they’re extremely angry or in some form of despair or having a breakdown of sorts (ex. psychological)
I actually started watching smiling friends because of the boss. I’ve been watching sick animation since hs happy he’s apart of this
Im glad to see Marc M finally get his flowers
Considering the boss shape-shifted in the newest episode of season 2 (he got stuck with a dog face) I’m almost wondering if he looks like a grotesque human because he actually isn’t human at all, but a shape-shifter. Since the world of smiling friends has a bunch of monsters and humanoids, I wouldn’t be surprised if The Boss just preferred his neutral state to be human, but in reality he is something more.
My headcanon is that Mr Boss is a demon that escaped Hell and genuinely wants to make people smile because he's spent an eternity torturing people. I also believe he gets some sort of life force from doing this because once the Smiling Friends business starts going under when the frowning friends come into town, he starts breaking down and goes "demonic". Hes a demon who found an alternative way to live and it make him genuinely happy doing it. Thats also why Mr Boss attracts other demons like Britney and why his room is just a pitch void. The void IS HIM, limbo. The Boss needs help making multiple people smile a day because it keeps him from going back to his demonic ways, and thats also why the Smiling friends are required to do ANYTHING a client to make them smile. Lmao I'm analyzing smiling friends.
Desmond wouldn't even be alive if it weren't for the charity Mr. Boss started. Quite possibly the Enchanted Forest princess as well. Then there's characters who had their whole lives changed for the better like Gwimbly and Mr. Frog
James is not an evil man, just a very troubled one, likely struggling with substance abuse too
It's so weird that Pim would make a video essay about his Boss, but to each their own.
James isn’t completely evil; he just pushed the only person that cared about him away.
It’s crazy, we see so many other bosses of other shows that are the absolute worst, Mr. Krabs sold Spongebob for 62 cents, Angela tried to get with Peter knowing his married, even some bosses in real life suck, but Mr. Boss genuinely cares about his employees and just wants to make people happy
I think that the thing that makes the boss my favorite character is the mix of an innocent personality along with a disturbed energy along with a quirky appearance and unusual activities.
Ok I’m just gonna say it…. The boss looks like Bill Gates🫢
Harrowing adventure or not, I think Alan would have reacted the same way.
He reminds me of a more unhinged peppermint butler
Gwimbly would be PS1. Also Mr.Boss for Multiversus
