I wish they would do another Dirty Rotten Survival season. That show was a lot of fun to watch. I am a fan of the videos and next spring you might find in in a class at the Pathfinder School. Great project with the herb knife.

Nice Production piece, I personally enjoy the blacksmithing videos...seems peaceful for me..good filming technique too, but would of liked to seen the finished product featured at the very end like you do on some other projects...it just shows the piece in all its final finished glory...Great job D.

Really good little knife design. It gives you great control. I would use that in the kitchen often, but I would never go backpacking with it. I can process food with a more traditional knife that also has a lot more versatility at the sacrifice is slightly less control in slicing small food items.

That looks very cool - and keeps your other knives reserved for more practical bush work or just use it as a utility knife.
definitely worth a look and possible addition to a "smoothin" long term excursion.
Thanks Dave - always learn something cool from ya.
Of topic question - what are your thoughts on using a pair of "multi-purpose shears" (kitchen/ garden) ??
i find they have become very valuable to me in prcessing stuff that needs light touch but also cutting animals and cordage, seat belts, like triage shears that paramedics use - Clauss makes a good pair and the Leatherman Raptor is on my list too !!!
Im just curious what your thoughts are ....... maybe a topic for another discussion.

Dave, Have a idea for a video. Fruit Harvesting
A round cylinder type basket for harvesting mountain blue berry's, etc..
It was approx 12" L x 3" W, The 6" was more of a basket and the top was a rake or fingers. tinger material was about as thick as a kabob I think it was from a Russian trapping documentary.
and a simple hook for the end of your walking stick.

they sell those at walmart in Alaska for 9.99$..lol berry pickers i call them..they have tines with space for blueberries to rake them off the plant.

9:57 I would like this knife particularly for this, you can easily mince something with that quick downwards chop where doing it with a straight handled knife would be more complicated.
do you shave with a straight razor? making one might be a interesting project for the future

    Hey dave,
Where would I go abouts to look for some steel. My girlfriend is a cook, and I would like to try and make something like this for her. Is there a place online, or is this a just go find a metal shop kind of deal. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Dave, when forging the herb knife could there be an advantage to making the knives to have more of a curve such as a nessmuk style knife or say a slight roach belly on it or is it best to leave the edge side straight and flat? And many thanks for all the knowledge you are departing to us.

    • @DavidCanterbury
      @DavidCanterbury  8 лет назад

+Clayton Lutwyche (Claydogger) This was not meant to be a Hash knife nor an Ulu it does have some curvature to the blade but too much limits its usefulness when harvesting plants as well as cutting meat.

+Tanzell McCrae Seriously? Blacksmithing is one of the MOST important Long term skills anyone can have, everything you use as far as tools is made from metal, you cannot own what you do not practice. I tell my students at the Pathfinder School, to "Do it, till you cant do it wrong"
