  • Jump right into Line Counter Reel Calibration, continue to show a Multiple Rod Spool & Calibration Tip that once you know & record your total length it will make year to year spooling easier.
Then show how to Dial In Trolling by making sure everything is correct from line calibration to Electronics Keel Offset & Rod placement when trolling.
Everything plays a part wether your trolling flats, steep breaks or in the weeds you want to make sure your above the fish & stay away from obstacles.

The whole process is a little confusing for someone that is just starting.
Calibrate line counter reel, two stakes @ 100 ft, leave line attached to spool & don’t cut. If the reel’s digital counter reads less than 100, it has too much line loaded and line must be removed from the reel. If the counter indicates a number greater than 100, then the reel doesn’t have enough line and more line must be added.
The biggest points I think are:
-counter reels need to be calibrated due to line size
-Having the leader & swivel helps with trimming line so you always know where you are
once you have a calibrated rod combo, unspool it all then use a separate line counter which counts the line going onto the spool... write that number total down.. your next rod will be the same which saves you a lot of time. Then just do a quick check to the peg.

Your video on calibrating line counter reels is the best I’ve seen and explains the process in detail. Plan to calibrate my reels now and troll crankbaits tonight. Thanks!

Thanks, I just wanted to share how I do it.
I like my Swivel at the end with the flourocarbon so you can trim line that gets beat up or chewed and still know where you have to be for length.

Some good points! I like that you add a leader because when you have to re tie because of your line getting chewed up, you can just start at the swivel and your not constantly cutting line off the main spool, making your reel slowly get more and more inaccurate. 👍

Right on, glad you could take something away from it.

VERY GOOD video! You even figured in transducer to surface offset!! 👍👍 (lol,, we don't re-set the counter till we're 2' down! ;>)
Now, when, after that spool is filled to proper capacity, get a permanent sharpy, & MARK the insides of your spool.
Then, you'll have a quicker, easier way to replace those worn lines!? LOL,,, As long as you use the same OD lines? RIGHT?
Just for the fun of it, next time, fill your spool with FAT OD 80# mono, & calibrate your counter. Note how full your spool is.
Then, take it back off, (or use another reel) & fill that same spool with 10# super thin BRAID.
Run them both out to 300' & show everyone the difference in counter read-out depth it would make!!
    OBTW,,,, FYI everyone,,, always run your baits 3'- 5' ABOVE those fish marks,,,, feeding fish don't look down,,, specially when they are flat on the bottom. ;

Good job on the vid. One suggestion, to make it easier to watch, would be to skip the background music...makes it hard to hear what you are saying.

So do you zero your line counter at the swivel? What pound test are the 6’ leader?

    • @surgeoutdoorsangling

I take my line counter to zero with the Berkley XT then pull off about 5-7 ft what ever you prefer and replace that length with a swivel & 12lb Flourocarbon.
Then if you have to trim or replace that Flourocarbon your always going to be good because your not touching the main line length.

What type rod and reel u running there ?

Ugly Stick Big Water 8’3 Light Action 6-20lb ... a decent rod I must say. I use it for pulling planner boards & down riggers for lake Trout, just swap reels with different line sizes. Awesome Bend & Backbone... Haven’t broken one yet like a couple other brands I’ve used.....
The reel is a Daiwa Accu-Depth Plus 27 LCBW, you can get either left or right handed reeled & your preference of reel style.

So if you get hung up and have to cut and retie, you're not going to be accurate anymore. Well, that sucks.

By having the leader at the end of the line you will always be accurate.
If it gets chewed up all you do is replace you leader length. Whether you go with 5-8 ft leader. Easy.
Correct if you break off 50 ft of main line depending on crankbait you can be out a lot.
