When we lived in NH in the early 70’s we would visit friends on Lake Christopher in Bryant Pond ME. We trolled for brookies and salmon with lead core on Penn reels #79 & 85. I still have those reels, although not much occasion to use them these days in northern AZ . Enjoy watching your videos, they bring back great memories.
Great video! As a side note I can get 10 colors on a Shimano TR200 with backing. Pretty much any reel with the capacity of 300/20lb mono gets a person in the neighborhood. I def agree on the slower tips keeping hooks in the fish. We lose more fish as the rods get shorter & stiffer as you alluded to.
I like it - it’s basic and reliable. The TR200 reel body fits in the palm of my hand pretty well. I’ve also tried the Picufun SalisX 300. It’s bigger than required but also very reliable and has a faster 6.2 retrieve which can be handy.
Great video. Been using spinning reel with mono to flouro as you described. Would like to try a baitcaster with line counter but they all llook the same. What should I be looking for. Appreciate your suggestions.
Great video as usual! I am going to try trolling for trout and salmon for the first time this summer. I grew up fishing for bass in the shallows but am looking to expand my hobby into deeper water. Do you have any recommendations for reel size for Maine salmon and trout trolling with downriggers? I have my eyes on the Okuma cold water and Okuma convector line counter reels. I just don't really have a frame of reference as to what size reels I should be thinking about. I plan on pairing these with an Okuma Kokanee Black Rod and an Okuma Blue Diamond Rod (both ML ~8-8.5ft).
I fish Lake Michigan in New Buffalo Michigan. I have no luck with the lead core not to mention you can't even feel the lakers however better than the plaining boards.

I always watch your videos as soon as you post them. As usual, so informative.

Thanks! How do you like that shimano?

Do you use 12 pound or 18 pound leadcore line?
Lots of good points ,well presented . Thx . I'm not into lead core anymore . Downrigger is my preference .

The shimano reel installed about is about the best I’ve used… pricy but awesome. Very smooth.
For downrigger rods do you use a swivel between your main line and leader? E.g. main line -> swivel -> leader -> snap ring -> spoon/lure?
I do .

Great video. I have a question about your leader set up . How do you set up your leader when you using a dodger or spinners with your spoons or bait?
Usually run my lure/bait 12” to a few feet behind those
What speed are you trolling at?
Just getting into down rigger fishing.
Small lake that’s averaging 90’
Depends what your trolling and water temp. But spoons I do anywhere from 1.5-2.5mph bait is slower

Right! The sensitivity is very very low. Hard to tell if they are still on of its a smaller fish.
Diawa makes some line counter reels too little more pricey but like the shimano it’s quality parts 💯
❤
Shimano tekota 800 line counter reel. Hold all the line you will ever need
