    I competed in 7 screenplay contests last year - varying from 'only writing the story' to 'winning production money'... 😯🍀 I didn't win anything. But... I did learn how to pitch, how to write with deadlines, how to take producers & audiences into account. Sometimes you even get feedback. And you meet so many industry people! It was a master class in screen writing! Lord, lots of free time spent on it... 😅 But still worth the learning curve. ☕️🎬

      That sounds amazing!!! You're so right! Contests are such a good way to learn about screenwriting and everything it entails! Pitching is so important and so hard hahahaha!!!! Are you entering anything this year?

      @@BeccaCSmith I will probably try again... Haha. But I would also like to work on my own stories. Always a challenge to find a balance between commissioned work, marketing, your own creativity. And maybe sleep? 🤣 Thanks for the tips about these contests. Good luck to you as well!

    I got to the Quarters at Finish Line, and Semis in both Shore Scripts and Screencraft Action & Thriller (different scripts). I only got in top 10% at the Nichol, but I entered too early. I've since done several rewrites on that script. Now I cn't get into my Academy account because I changed phones! Doh!

    It is SO FUN hearing you talk about screenwriting! Between you, Phoebe, and some other people I've chatted with recently, I really want to try entering more contests! (Maybe even screenwriting next year bahahah.) Also seeing all of your placements for Nicholl's on screen is WILD. I love your point about how incredible it is that they let you see how far along you made it in the process (and I wish every contest did this!). It's so cool to hear you can submit spec scripts for the Austin Film Festival too!
    I love you breaking down which contests are industry hubs and have eyes on them! That's something a lot of people wouldn't know and it's awesome for you to share. :)
    Also I saw your response to Laura and I'm so excited for your upcoming scheduled videos!! I need to pick up The Founding of Screenwriting.
    (I'm very excited for this embarrassing pitch meeting story time in the future. 👀)

    THIS IS SUCH A HELPFUL VIDEO, holy crap. (I also appreciate you pointing out that contests are subjective, because god we're all already our own worst critics, so it really is something that we need to remember that reading is so, so subjective and stuff like this isn't indicative of our skills.) Thank you for sharing this! And good luck!! 💖

I really can't decide between two of my scripts this year to enter into Nicholls! The two scripts are so different from each other, I just have no idea lol!! And neither one is ready yet either! I’m excited for you! I’ve thought so much about script writing, but haven’t had the guts to dive in. Did you make a video before about recommendations on where to start to learn about script writing? I feel like I remember you doing what. I have a great idea for a feature that I’m tempted to work on this year. Also, I’m curious how often ideas get stolen from these contests. Do you register your script/idea before entering? How does that work?

    • @BeccaCSmith
      @BeccaCSmith  2 года назад +2

      Thank you, Laura!!!!! You are so psychic lol! I've literally filmed and scheduled videos for Thursday and the following Monday about registering and what craft book I used way back when I first moved to LA and wanted to write my first screenplay lol!!! This book is a staple for screenwriting, I highly, highly recommend it for getting started. It's called The Foundation of Screenwriting by Syd Field. After I read it (at the wee age of 19 lol) it gave me the confidence and tools I needed to write a feature. I do have a video for screenwriting basics though (formatting and such) that I filmed a while back. I just made a new playlist for screenwriting. Since my brain is in screenwriting mode, most of my content will probably be focused on that hahahaha!!!

I'm also curious if these sorts of competitions are usually open globally or just US based? haven't quite dabbled into screen plays yet but I've always been interested in giving it a go with a couple of my stories so it's nice to know what sort of stuff is out there if I do in the future!

    let's be honest: the thing about nicholl is that they claim they're open to all genres (and even let you choose additional or 'modifying genres' on each submission), but in reality they are highly biased in favor of 'human drama' and 'historically-based' scripts. (nicholl also has heavy bias against politically-related/driven scripts when 'judging' scripts.) example, the only bona fide 100% thriller genre script that has ever been a finalist at nicholl was arlington road (ehren kruger) and that was almost 30 years ago! nicholl misleads entrants and should clearly define their preferences and bias and steer their competition as a 'drama' only script competition or revamp the competition to finally be fully unbiased and open to all genres (ie. the story of the script should inform the judgment of the judges, not the genre or setting of the script). in many ways, nicholl is the most misleading and utterly fraudulent script competition out there. other people have voiced even harsher opinions about nicholl. (and by the way, nicholl readers/judges and their 'notes/feedback' are in fact some of the laziest, incompetent and amateurish in the industry, even worse than the dubious comps out there.)

    Richard Van Alstyne’s The Rising American Empire (1962) provides evidence of the founders to break away from the British Empire to found a continental American Empire. His explanation of the Greek model of republicanism is incomplete, and he fails to include an explanation of how some of the founders of the United States looked to the free way of life of the American Indian as a model of liberty. Greek and Roman political models were premised on a master / slave paradigm of domination that your guest is not taking into account. Political science is the study of “the control of man by man,” or in other words the study of systems of domination.
