This is why planes DONT need to get only 1 pilot
People who think the copilot is not a pilot should see this.
@@diesel4ever273 i agree
Agreed because if there was no copilot, not only the pilot would’ve been killed but the others on board too 😮

As well as MANY other reasons
You could hear the sadness in the copilot's voice

My sympathy to the co pilot on the loss of his co worker and prayers to the pilots family. So sad. The co pilot handled it so well.
This is a tragic event and I send my most sincere condolences, but to say “PRAYERS TO THE FAMILY” is typical god goonery.

Cockpit and cabin crew are trained to deal with incapacitated pilots including cpr so i assume they would have done everything they could for him. Such a shame but he died doing what he loved
The co-pilot likely just landed the plane as quickly as possible to get him help.
I think the cabin crew would’ve had a really hard time trying to pull his dead weight from his chair and out of the cockpit to administer CPR.
That might’ve taken several strong guys and with all the security precautions airlines have in place nowadays the co-pilots best option was probably just to land the plane.
I'm sure he'd rather have not died at work

That’s a heavy workload for a single pilot. He did admirably well in an extremely difficult situation.
Hardly
Co pilots land planes on their own all the time.
Visual approach was doable
This is why we train extensively
Right? If the co-pilot had been from Air France, the plane would've ended up leaving Earth's orbit and flying to Mars. 💀

That's why all commercial flights require two pilots😢❤
Everything is redundant in aviation. Esp commercial aviation.
Nope. Many commercial flights are flown with a single pilot, both cargo flights and with pax. 1-2/month I’m on a C-208 Caravan going ENA-ANC with one pilot (and no FA).
2 or more, depending upon the length of the flight. I’m staying away from the ones with only 1 pilot.
Amen!!❤😢❤
@@SharonTemplemangoing beyond 2 pilots is dependent on length of flight with transpacific flights requiring crew rest on route. 1 versus 2 pilots is a function of plane weight (over 12,500 pounds GTOW) and pax (10 or more) requiring a second pilot.
Rest, dear Pilot.
Mega kudos to co-pilot. You managed that emergency well.
Too many elderly men flying general aviation airplanes, too. Had to convince my 78 yr old father (retired fighter pilot) with current flight physical to stop flying his former company’s TBM 850 turbo. He flew it as single pilot occasionally for quick trips (no passengers) free of charge, just to keep flying. I hadn’t flown with him in 3-4 years and was shocked how bad he was. He relied completely on autopilot and ATC had to literally repeat every radio call. His over-head visual patterns were dangerous. I told the chief pilot to never let my dad fly that airplane again. Fortunately, dad agreed to stop flying. Had I not intervened I would be responsible for the tragedy that was soon to follow.
Damn. That's a tough call to make. But the right one nonetheless. May your pops enjoy his golden years.
Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders died a week ago flying a plane at 90 years old
My dad made Capt at twa, n American but only flew a few years because of his age and was going to be busted down to 1st class. Fuck that. He left n went to NET JETS. WHAT PEOPLE NEED TO REALIZE IS THAT THE AIRLINES DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE PILOTS THAT FLY ALL OF YOU AND KEEP U SAFE. THE COCKPITS DO NOT HAVE GOLD AND OTHER SUBSTANCES ADDED TO THE GLASS TO PREVENT SUN CANCER, THE US NAVY DOES.
This gentleman was not elderly.. He was only 57..

Praise God for copilots professional ability to switch gears, in very difficult circumstances. Losing a colleague is difficult but in that situation that takes a very special and gifted person to turn that around . I pray for peace and healing for all affected by this.
I touch and agree with your prayer in Jesus Holy Name Amen 🙏🏽
This is how trained professionals act. If this has been a Hollywood movie, there would be panic, screaming, the whole nine yards. Kudos to copilot!
Oh wow! So sad. The co-pilot handled that with complete dignity! He remained calm and strong for the passengers. So sorry for the loss if this pilot.
Amazing how calm the co- pilot remained. May he RIP😢

2015 SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A New York medical examiner says an American Airlines pilot who became ill while flying from Phoenix to Boston died from natural causes.
The Onondaga County medical examiner's office on Monday night announced the determination in the death of 57-year-old Capt. Michael Johnston. Officials say the determination was made after an autopsy and preliminary toxicology tests. No other details have been released.
CBS affiliate KUTV reported Johnston has been flying for well over 25 years according to his family. BJ Johnston, his wife, said she's been told that her husband likely died of a heart attack.
Not a surprise.
REST IN PEACE FELLOW AVIATOR. ❤
Crazy to execute a return landing at full takeoff weight!! Great job by crew. RIP
why is that crazy?
Where did you get that information that it returned at full take off weight?
@@yokfinlee376well the description of the video says that the captain died mid take-off. Doesn't seem likely he would do a take-off weight landing though.
Depends on the sector not every take off is at full take off weight. Short sectors do not need much fuel load.
How do we know they were at full take off weight? Your only guessing
So sad, May the captain rest in peace,Amen❤❤❤❤❤
He passed doing what he loved. RIP
Yea this is the perfect example of that, not what some other idiots were saying when a Beechcraft plane caught fire and was spiraling to the ground. Nobody loves burning to death in flight or crashing and dying.
Extremely stressful. Your co-worker is in serious trouble right beside you but you can't help at all - full attention needed to land the plane.
This is great testimony to the skill level of professional pilots. Thousands of hours of training may not be needed until one critical point in time. Then they have to be ready.
What could the copilot felt when he said what happened, and how could he withstand being that sad😢. Rest in peace for the pilot.
That's freaky!! No matter how well you're trained having someone drop dead next to you would be freaky. RIP Captian.
I get to know more about flights and they are amazing, thanks for such videos. New sub here!
Sorry for what happened to the pilot. ☹️Thanks for the calmness of the other pilot to land safely. 🙏
I wish they still had 3 person cockpits. One thing I learned from watching these videos is in emergency they need an extra hand.
There used to be a navigator
You don't actually need any pilots nowadays, computers can do it all and much better than human pilots. The reason we still have pilots is because the pilots themselves don't trust computers to take off and land, plus I'm sure them still wanting a career had a part to play in it. Still the fact remains we don't need pilots at all.
@@albertdunford3830 Who could monitor engine, trim and other systems while one pilot flew and the other communicated. I am fully aware of the navigator/flight engineer position.
@@jimclayton2100 no, he's saying they used to have 4 person cockpits at one point, captain, FO, engineer, and navigator. That was in the days before extensive radio navigation when they had to have a dedicated navigator specially trained in celestial navigation, dead reckoning, etc. And actually, at one point, it was standard to have a 5 person cockpit that included a dedicated radio operator, generally on trans-oceanic flights that required HF
@@golangismyjamThis is an absolutely absurd idea for safety reasons. Without a human in the cockpit what happens when the machine fails in a way that requires manual intervention. Say if an electronic component fails and starts sending erroneous data to the flight control system and there needs to be some type of physical interaction in the cockpit like resetting a circuit breaker or extinguishing an electrical fire or about a thousand other scenarios where having a brain that controls muscles is necessary? Sure, pilotless aircraft are possible and could be generally safe, but in the rare occasions where something fails in an unexpected manner you will always need a human “on-site” to supervise the machine. No way any pilotless aircraft will ever be rated for commercial flight with so many lives at risk.
Reminds me of TAROM flight 371, which fatally crashed because the first officer was too shocked to react properly to a minor auto-throttle issue, due to the pilot's incapacitation.
Oh my....Thank the crew for keeping cool....So sad to hear...God Bless them....R.I.P. Captain....So sorry for your loss...🙏❤️
I wonder if the constant changes in pressure on the bodies of these aviators plays a long term partial role in these types of deaths
That is a question the USAF investigated in pre-NASA days. Pilots were observed as they went higher and higher to the edge of the atmosphere. Have you ever noticed the 'bathing caps' pilots wore as they entered the planes? A neurologist observed their brain waves as they went through their paces up .
Captain and co-pilote thank you❤
I'm so sorry about the captain's incapacity. The cool co-pilot did wonders to bring down the big bird .👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💪💪

"The co-pilot was surprisingly cool"
Did you expect the co-pilot to start to scream, cry, run out of the cockpit...??? 😂
So many of the people making comments here, actually seem surprised that the plane didn't crash and kill everybody on board because the pilot died....what "gives?" People *can die at work* and flying a plane is their work.
(Boggles the mind!)
RIP - 😢
You are indeed best Captain
In your last service indeed
May he rest in peace
That's what First Officers (co pilots) are for, among MANY other things.
Shame... May he rest in peace. They ought to be thankful that the Co-Pilot was able to take the reigns so smoothly in his place, on the spot. Just 5 days after this happened to a Captain for Alaska Airlines, my daughter boarded an Alaska Airlines flight to Hawaii. I was oblivious to this occuring so recently prior to her flight. She and her airplane also arrived safely!
Except this incident was NOT on an Alaska Airlines flight!
@@Patrick_Ross It's not? What airline logo do YOU see painted across the fuselage & tail of the aircraft featured in this video/report? I'm pretty sure it doesn't resemble a JetBlue, American Airlines, United Airlines or any other airlines' logo. Look again...yep, it definitely looks like Alaska Airlines to me. Try again to convince me otherwise....& If it somehow WASN'T Alaska Airlines, they ought to get their legal team alerted to this video & report.
Good grief: one pilot on one airline doesn't make all the other pilots in that airline, (or all pilots anywhere) "questionable." Try to keep things real.
And yes, a huge majority of flights are very successful. Your odds are better on a flight than riding in a car! If you hear that a pilot did something wrong or became sick or even died, what would be crazy is to call relatives or friends and say, "WATCH OUT!"😵💫

First officer was chill but heart broke at the same time.
Rip to the captain 😢
The First Officer is doing his job like he was trained to do.
that is a reason why there is 2 pilots, and will be for long time. that is Mayday call because a plane is without redundancy in one system (if on board is another pilot certifyied on that airplane, then is a same priority as die of passenger).
Mayday is only for an imminent potential crash. This was not a Mayday call and not even an emergency call. One competent pilot is enough to return an aircraft to the airport.
@@janebrown7231 from what I understand, pilot incapacitation does warrant a mayday. Yes one pilot is enough to land in an emergency, but for optimal flight, two conscious and sound-minded pilots are ideal.
Any incapacitation is a medical emergency anyway, which warrants a mayday.
@boringperson-zb8vy I think not, especially if landing is very close. Emergency probably, but not necessarily Mayday.
It would be likely to warrant an emergency, because of the medical incapacitation (though that would be the pilot's call, if the person was definitely deceased). However, if the remaining pilot expects to be able to land, she/he would not have to call Mayday, which is for an imminent crash. Of course that would be an individual decision.
A pilot a few minutes away from landing should normally be able to land with almost no added risk of a crash.
The job of the PM, pilot monitoring, during landing is to communicate. But having already declared emergency and received approach instructions, the pilot is not required to communicate with the control tower if two-way communication is difficult. So having no second pilot really doesn't drastically affect the emergency situation or the risk of a fit pilot crashing the plane.
In any commercial aircraft, there is meant to be 100% redundancy. One pilot is meant to be able to fly alone. A close approach and landing in average conditions are not the most difficult part of flying, as autopilot will do most of the work, especially if there's just one pilot.
@@janebrown7231 in two pilot operation pilot incapacitation is mandatory mayday call by the ffa/icao.
Declaring emergency is equal mayday call. under that is PAN PAN call.
I think the thought could be that its not necessarily known why one pilot could be out, so who knows if it could affect the second pilot. For instance a slow gas leak, so its best to get down fast @janebrown7231
May the pilot rest in peace
