    Lock-in nights do happen, but not for schoolwork or anything, usually for some sort of celebration. For example, my high school did this thing called "Project Graduation" that hosts a heavily supervised graduation party to keep students from partying and drinking and such. Something like the iCarly episode would never happen, though. Schools do NOT want kids last-minute completing their assignments, and there would be teachers and chaperones EVERYWHERE.

    Things about this arc I enjoyed:
    -Jim Parsons’ guest appearance.
    -Gibby’s song.
    -The scene where Spencer’s hit in the balls (his facial expression was pretty priceless).
    That’s...pretty much it. Seriously, this was by far the most embarrassing part of an otherwise great show’s run.

    I think the whole purpose of the Seddie Arc, honestly, was to troll the Seddie fans. Seriously, if I were a Seddie shipper, I would feel like I got ripped off. The first two episodes seemed to be about Sam and Freddie becoming a couple, and the last 3 were about why they make a terrible couple.

    • @tigorelloensil3676
      @tigorelloensil3676 4 года назад +9

      Yeah that's weird. Like the point of the arc is that they don't work as a couple, but also they try so hard to make them cute and lovey dovey and all that. This should've been 3 episodes at most. Episode 1 to set it up, episode 2 to explore how the two characters react to it, and episode 3 where everything goes to shit.

    • @nascarfanatic2425
      @nascarfanatic2425 4 года назад +17

      @@tigorelloensil3676 Honestly, I don't think it should've even been an arc. It probably should've been a 44-minute special or a 2-part episode at the most. Or put it in there, but don't make the episodes all about Sam & Freddie being an item. What they should've done was character development. This was an opportunity to make Sam a more likeable character. They could still keep the best parts about her, while making her more pleasant of a human being. They chose not to go that route, though; they just stuck to "The Status Quo is God," and they never changed Sam or Freddie. And at the end of it all, they broke up, making the whole arc completely pointless.
      And the problem is that Schneider's Bakery has made couples similar to Seddie work before. Josh/Mindy from Drake & Josh for example. Do you wanna know what made them work but not Seddie? It's simple: they had something in common. Mindy and Josh didn't get along with each other at first, but they were pretty similar in character. They're both scientifically intelligent, and they have very similar traits with the exception of Josh having stereotypical guy-like traits, and Mindy having stereotypical girl-like traits. Those differences were what made them look like a cute couple, though, and their similarities are what made them perfect for each other.
      Seddie on the other hand was just two complete opposites that had no common ground. And they really gave no development towards them becoming a couple. Honestly, what they should've done was something similar to iSavedYourLife, and I'm not even a fan of that episode.

    I never liked the idea of Sam and Freddie as a couple. Thinking about the show, the thing that made me most uncomfortable with it was the way Sam treated Freddie. The worst part is how this is played for laughs. I guarantee that if the genders were reversed (a male juvenile delinquent beats up a nerdy girl while a laugh track plays), there would have been a lot of controversy regarding it. Anyway, I can’t wait for Pieguy to tackle the rest of this arc.

      Sam is pretty unlikable anyway and the fact she gets away with abusing Freddie doesn't help. The conclusion to this dumpster fire of an arc is one of Sam's worse appearances, as well as competition for her worst actions. (Though her actions in iSell Penny-Tees is a good competitor) and the fact Marissa Benson is a Designated Villain makes it even worse since she's basically the good guy in this story arc. :/ Think about that without your brain stems losing a few IQ points.
      Normally I feel sorry for Freddie because he's constantly abused, nobody treats him like a human being (Carly included) but here he's as insufferable as Sam is. Also the fact Gibby gets abuse simply for being a discounted Freddie for Sam leaves even more horrible implications.

    • @popplioprincess7137
      @popplioprincess7137 6 лет назад +31

      Not to mention how the show acts as though this is all somehow okay because "Freddie enjoys it." No. That's not okay. That's pretty much manipulating your lover into believing that abuse=love, which is not a good mindset in the slightest. These kinds of double standards need to die. Why is it okay for a girl to pick on and beat up a boy she supposedly likes only for them to become a couple? Is it because she's a girl? Is it because he's a nerd? What were the writers thinking?
      And the worst part is, and forgive me for sounding pretentious, a lot of iCarly's demographic is tweens and young teens who don't have much relationship experience, so they probably ended up thinking that this is normal for a relationship (and I actually think this is the only reason why Seddie got so popular). Scary world we live in, huh?

    I think the argument a lot of people made for Seddie was "It's an Arnold and Helga dynamic"
    No, it's not. For one, Hey Arnold is a cartoon and can take Helga's admiration of arnold to absurd degrees for comedy and storytelling. And two, we as viewers have known about Helga's crush since the beginning of the show. Sam was always written to just be a bully to Freddy and nothing more.

    • @popplioprincess7137
      @popplioprincess7137 6 лет назад +17

      Hope you don't mind if I add my own reasons.
      Three, Helga was actually called out on her behavior in at least one episode and had to talk to a therapist about it, and it turned out that she had a lot of problems in her home that made her the way she was. Sam seems to have some crap going on in her life too, but she seems to be relatively okay with her life unlike Helga. Sam doesn't come off as a trouble girl who's lashing out at the world around her, she just comes off as a jackass. To put it in anime comparisons, Helga is like Asuka Langley Soryu (bully with a tragic past) while Sam is like Naru Narusegawa (bully who's a bully just to be a bully).
      Four, Helga and Arnold never actually get into a relationship (at least as far as I know) unlike Sam and Freddie, so it never really crosses over into relationship abuse. And Helga may be a jerk but as far as I know she's never done stuff like beat Arnold with a tennis racket which would've put him in the hospital.
      So yeah, it's an unfair comparison to make.

    • @a7xguitar666
      @a7xguitar666 6 лет назад +3

      id like to offer my 2cents from the seddie side of things. gonna preface my comment by saying i havent seen hey arnold so i wouldnt understand the comparisons. also gonna preface my comment by saying that ive seen a good number of anime that feature a tsundere character, so the idea of female lead "abusing" the boy she is in love with honestly doesnt phase me one bit. obviously this is a serious topic in real life and should not be ignored, but in these shows, it is purely meant for slapstick humor and cheap entertainment purposes. there is no lasting damage done, even into the following episodes, and the slapstick is passed over very quickly without thought because there is no real substance to the "abuse", it is just there to establish the "tough badass chick" persona.
      For me, both characters are flawed, which is a good foundation to have because nobody wants a perfect character. Sam is abusive, angry, violent, and abrasive. this is shown to stem from the underlying crap that she has to deal with at home with not really having a mother or father. the only ones that matter to sam are carly and eventually freddie. However, sam does receive character development and eventually comes to care for freddie too.
      Freddie is the opposite. He is a wimpy, fawning preteen who follows carly's every whim just because she is pretty. meanwhile, he despises sam because he views her as a monster. he is babied and coddled by his neurotic mother, which has lead to his upbringing as a scrawny "nub" as sam would say.
      however, these two polar opposites strangely compliment each other very well and have legitimate chemistry together. sam pesters freddie, who strangely is able to find the courage to stand up to her (on occasion) of all people when he wont stand up to anyone else. sam brings freddie out of his shell and unintentionally helps freddie grow a backbone, progressing to the point where he even has the balls to stand up to his mother and sam puckett herself. he grows more independent and confident directly because of her influence.
      on the flipside, freddie is ironically the only guy that regular stands up to her and doesnt crumble against sams taunting. he gives her attention and focuses on her, something that has never happened before because normally every guy passes over her to focus on carly. sam has always been shown to feel something towards freddie, as shown in ikiss and iprom date. these feelings were shown early and felt natural despite the tough girl persona she chooses to exude. She even grows as a character enough to realize when she has gone too far in pushing freddie and apologizes when she realized her mistake. from that point on, freddies influence directly causes sam to mellow out (even if it is slight) and she noticeably grows less violent and aggressive as she matures into a young adult.

      Just because a lot of anime have the "abusive tsundere" character doesn't mean it's a good archetype. And I'm sure you know damn well that there would be an outrage if the genders were reversed.
      She doesn't really grow out of her abusive ways, though. Even after she hooks up with Freddie, she continues to beat him.
      Are you trying to imply that domestic abuse is a good thing because it "helped Freddie grow a spine"? I really hope you don't know of any abusive relationships in real life.

    When I first saw this episode, I didn’t understand why they didn’t take the advantage of Sam hooking up with Brad. The only other time he appeared before this episode was in “iHire an Idiot” when he was the second to last applicant to be interviewed for the intern position. I did think it was cool that they decided to bring him back again and he genuinely did seem like a pretty decent guy. If Sam got together with Brad, it could have developed Sam as a character and begin learning to treat people a lot more nicer and not be so juvinal all the time. She was in a previous relationship before way back in season 1, but it was much more sillier and the guy was an idiot. The one she could have had with Brad would be her first serious relationship and we could have actually seen how that arc went for her on her own instead of putting her with Freddie which never made sense to me due to how she horribly she treated him. 😕 I will be honest, the whole sideplot with Spencer in the box was pretty ridiculous, but it was kinda entertaining at the same time.

    I think this is a good analogy as to why iCarly suffered Seasonal Rot after Season 3. Where as stated it became less about the webshow (the entire premise based around the show's existence) into basically focusing on their "normal" lives, which were really nonsense with little structure. Honestly Drake & Josh had some pretty bad episodes too, namely in its 3rd and 4th seasons. But it still kept its charm and comedic vibe. (Also can't get enough out of how funny Josh was) but I have to agree this is where Schnider plots got really bad and this is easily among the worst that this universe has to offer. The 3rd act *iCan't Take It* is one of the worst episodes of a Dan Schnider show ever! Especially the climax of the episode which features Sam at her worst, or among her worst. *iSell Penny Tees rivals it* and the fact Mrs Benson is the protagonist in the 3rd act doesn't help whatsoever. Remember when this was about a webshow? Because the show certainly did.

    • @Lauren_210
      @Lauren_210 6 лет назад +21

      Josh/Mindy are definetely an underrated Nick couple. Their relationship dynamic was very well executed (especially for a kid's sitcom). I liked the fact that they didn't follow the typical cliches of the couple breaking up through crying or arguing and just decided to continue studying/hanging out with each other and talk as friends even if they were not together anymore. The way they talked about how they didn't know what love felt like due to them not having any previous dating experiences was very mature and felt genuine (something that you could definetely hear someone say in real life). In addition, both Josh and Mindy were given CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

      Lauren210 I think the big difference between how the writers treated Seddie and how they treated Jindy was that they WANTED Josh and Mindy to get together. They didn't really want Sam and Freddie to get together. You can tell by every episode of the Seddie Arc.
      - iOMG: Seddie becomes canon out of nowhere.
      - iLost My Mind: Depicted Seddie fans as brainless idiots.
      - iDate Sam and Freddie: Pretty much showed why Sam and Freddie are a terrible couple.
      - iCan't Take It: An episode where they forced Sam and Freddie to stay together because... I Don't know why, honestly. They should've broke up after this episode.
      - iLove You: Revealed that there was 0 chemistry between Sam and Freddie.

    I never understood this episode at all. Watching it again actually made me realize how different the first and second half of the show are. The first half is a classic 3 seasons of kids just being impossibly awesome friends with funny banter and plot-building scenarios, while the episodes that come after iParty with Victorious, and even some before it, are literally ALL scenarios that have the characters treating each other less like friends and more like co-workers in a business office on their lunch breaks. Seriously, watch the second half of the show again and just look at how bored or desperate to be funny the actors are trying to be. What happened to those times when Carly tried to enjoy life, smile whenever something unexpected happens, or really expressed interest in whatever her friends or Spencer were doing? In the later half of the show, she decides to stupidly chase after boys, she never goes back to being optimistic after restraining Sam and her antics, and the show actively changes Spencer's gags from curious and funny art projects to an annoyingly overused sense of randomly setting objects on fire, making Carly constantly nag him about it and at one point even roast a hot dog on a flame. Seriously, this is all happening during and even after the Seddie arc. Jesus Christ, how in the hell did the show go from saying great things like "You might get famous" and "My brother's a great artist!" to saying constantly strange things like "Get in the bubble bath, paint your nails, and think about bunnies" and "Okay, how could you start a fire in the shower?!" ?!

    I will admit that I shipped Freddie and Sam from at least season 2. I really thought there was more to these two than just an abusive relationship, especially in the episode iReunite With Missy. After Missy tortures Sam to get her to stop being best friends with Carly so she can be best friends with Carly, Sam actually goes to Freddie for help. Freddie is suspicious about just why Sam would need his help (and rightfully so) and asks her exactly that. Sam responds with something along the lines of "I'm here talking to you begging for your help. Have I ever come to you al e for anything ever?" Freddie realizes he likes and feels baldy for Sam more than he used to and devises a great plan to get Missy out of the picture. Carly realizes pretty quickly what Freddie did and mildly teases him for it, but she is kind of happy he is beginning to feel differently about Sam. Those are the kind of Freddie and Sam plot lines I like. As the dating story arc progresses, you realize that the writers don't know how to write these two characters as a romantic couple. They end up using the tired story line of them not being able to be alone without fighting. You kind of know that these two were doomed from the start. They were not really ever able to connect on an emotional level, except maybe for the final scene of iKiss. They even couldn't really bring themselves to want to try to like the things the other person likes and only reluctantly did so after Carly told them they needed to since she couldn't figure out what else would keep them together. I was also disappointed somewhat in the way Freddie's mom reacted when she found out about the relationship. In the first season when Freddie went on his first date, she was just happy a living breathing girl around his age liked him even a little bit. Yeah Sam has an abrasive personality (to put it mildly), but she never really stopped Freddie from hanging out with Sam when she thought of them only as friends. She also originally only wanted Freddie with Carly and for the one episode where they do date (iSaved Your Life) she doesn't really have much of a reaction. Personally, if the storyline hadn't been so front and center with Freddie and Sam for the 5 or so episodes it was, maybe people wouldn't have the feelings they do (good or bad) about it. They would have been a couple for the entire next season with only a few episodes here and there that focus on them entirely with the season finale episode being where they break up. After the breakup, they just go back to whatever it was they were doing (separate of iCarly) before they dated. I'm not totally sure but I don't believe Sam refers to Freddie as her ex-boyfriend until the Sam & Cat episode where Cat brings Freddie to L.A. to make Sam jealous because she's jealous Sam's hanging out with her friend Jade without her. Clearly Dan Schneider did this to give the fans what they wanted. By the time the middle of season 3 came around, I realized for the time being that Sam and Freddie were not going to get together and I accepted this and moved on. To go another season and a half before they do date is too long to go, especially if there really isn't any will they or won't they tension sprinkled in. For example in the heatwave episode, Freddie has a girl he has been video chatting with come to Carly's apartment so they could meet for the first time. All Sam does is make fun of how tall the girl is and how short Freddie is. I would have thought that she would have shown a little bit of jealousy towards Freddie and maybe at least once ask Carly what he sees in that girl. That never happens, so it appears to me that when Sam gets in "in love" mood on the app it feels a bit forced. It is not a mood she has ever felt towards anyone, even as a friend (accept maybe towards Carly). Now if it has said she felt "angry" or " jealous" and the episode had been that Freddie was working on his project with a hot girl and she confronts Freddie about that and then kisses him, that would have been more believable. I think people who wanted to see Sam and Freddie get together had very high expectations (think 90's tween comedy show romances) and the writers were just giving the fans what they wanted, but you could tell that if they didn't feel as if they needed to satisfy that base, they wouldn't have put these two together romantically. I feel the three of them (Carly included) wouldn't have ever had anything romantic going on at all. That's the problem with shows like this. The audience automatically, from the very first episode, want to see huge will they or won't they tension from the main characters. Sometimes that doesn't always make for the greatest shows. A very good final example of this is "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide." Ned and Moze were best friends without an ounce of romantic tension until he started to date her rival Suzie. The last half of the final season seemed very forced to me with Moze stuck in a love triangle of sorts between Ned and the South American soccer guy who randomly showed up early in that season. The way Moze and Ned announce their relationship in the final scene of the series so matter of factly really bothered me. They should have just stayed friends since they had more of a brother/sister relationship anyway. That storyline ruined a really great show. The Sam and Freddie storyline also ruined what was for at least the first half a really great show.

    I never shipped any of the characters together when I watched iCarly, I only ever saw them as best friends; and especially not Sam and Freddie. Sam's behavior is absolutely awful to Freddie in most episodes, the few good moments between them are incredibly few and far in between. Freddie's romantic interest in Carly is much more believable than the sudden crush that Sam has with Freddie and the eventual love interest with Sam and Freddie have later on. It makes no sense really. Even for the more wacky moments that iCarly had, it just makes no sense to me.

    I liked the Seddie arc when it first premiered on TV. However, there was no build up to Sam and Freddie's relationship. That is the same problem I had with Olive and Fletcher on A.N.T Farm. There was no buildup. I Didn't Do It canonized Logan and Jasmine's relationship perfectly because throughout the series there was a will they/ won't they thing going on. If Sam had shown much interest for Freddie other than sharing her first kiss with him in season 2 then it would have made some sense. Also, the way Sam treated Freddie was horrible throughout most of the series and the fact that he still liked her after she tormented him all those years is sincerely shocking.

    I was never a fan of the entire Seddie arc when it first started. In terms of character and regardless of having two mothers that are opposite extremes, the pair are highly incompatible and lacked the exact fluidity Arnold and Helga developed.
    To me, the entire execution of the shipping is basically the definition of fanservice and doesn't bring a sense of substance in the show other than the entire "For the fans" shtick. Sam & Cat demostrated this stunt in that lackluster episode where both characters tricked their "love-interests" for ridiculous reasons other than jumping over tuna.

      JZTSmokenem Sam and Freddie didn’t even have an interesting dynamic like Josh and Mindy had from Drake and Josh.

    I’m glad you’re back making videos, man! I get being busy and all, and you shouldn’t worry about shoving videos out, take your time, but I’ve really been missing your more chill and nuanced analysis and I’m glad you’re back!! Thanks!!

    In my opinion, iCarly went downhill after iPsycho.

    I’m pretty sure it would’ve been Nick demanding the episode. The writers got payed the same amount for every episode they write regardless of how many viewers it would get. Nick is the only one who could benefit off this.

      Sam is pretty much the Western live-action equivalent of Naru Narusegawa.

    YES, YES. Burn this arc with the fire and fury that destroyed every pastry that had the misfortune to come in this bakery.

    Any chance you'll do IReunite with Missy? It always got on my nerves how oblivious carly was to everything
    I also think you should do either the bird scene or the birthweek present from victorious, the former for being incredibly frustrating to watch, and the latter for how insufferable trina is and that awful, awful ending
    Also: just for fun, here's what all the episodes would be
    Ireunite with Missy: either persian chocolates or a pinata
    Bird scene: bird nest cookies
    Birthweek present: birthday cake

    Hey Pie Guy, do Theater Thug From Drake and Josh for Bottom Of The Bakery. It's definitely a bad episode and my least favorite episode of Drake and Josh. Josh is tortured for laughs, the plot is very rushed, and the ending has Josh arrested because they thought he was the Theater Thug. Also, everyone is so stupid in the episode, they don't get what is real and fake. One more thing, Josh looks nothing like the real Theater Thug. So it would make my day for you to do this episode.
