I've got to say Rob, you're standard of production and content are absolutely first class, as regards golf "she's a cruel mistress" I've no doubt you'll get back to where you once we're, keep up the good work.👍
Absolutely a Gem! Thx a lot Rob! Totally can relate to that topic. Begun in 2014 and came down to 11hcp and plateaued their for 3 years. Then broke 80 regularly and went down to 5,8 and stalled again. Now the next step while dropping to 4,4 is to break 75 more often. It’s like a barrier. And I guess it’s more a mental issue. Allways having this 75 in my mind and avoiding Faults like Doubles and worse that’s killing the Score. Really a struggle and I mostly end up in a bad mood. Read some good book about the mental game from Bob Rotella. He Recommends besides other things positive Attitude with emphasis on reinforcement of good strokes rather than getting angry about your bad once to boost your selfconfidence and subconscious inner self. Just Analyse bad strokes, take them as they are and forget them. And also to work hard on the Shortgame, so u are confident to get up and down more and no worser than a bogey. This also as your friend said gives a huge boost in confidence. I’ve got to try both harder and change my attitude. Im always getting upset and disappointed in a bad round. But this attitude is more likely to worsen my game totally unnecessarily. My conclusion is: the better you get at golf, the better you have to learn to deal with mistakes that happen anyway. At the same time, you have to build a strong inner confidence and believe in the strengths of your game.
My average this summer is about 2-3 over, with an occasional 2-3 under par round(69,70),and an occasional high 70’s round(77,78)(par 72). I attribute my scoring to very rarely getting a double. Maybe 1 double every 4-5 rounds. I’ve also started putting more detail and effort into one-putting more often. I rarely have more than 30 putts. My under par rounds are 27-28 putts. Pretty much never 3-putt. So…. Basically the things he pointed out. Something I haven’t done is upgrade equipment. I hit a Callaway 460 driver from 2008. I hit Ping ISI irons from 1997. lol
I can soooooo relate to this! I played off 8 for a long time. Then during Covid played and practice a lot and got down to 2.1. I constantly thought I wasn’t good enough to be a 2! Now I’m comfortable playing off 4. Pros play bad shots too!
Loved it mate Matt's pretty relaxed about everything and said nothing about how to practice or how to approach shots during the round I haven't heard lots of people on RUclips say to do but.. Somehow his words carried more weight with them, maybe it's because he's done what I want to achieve (currently I'm on an 11 handicap) or maybe he's just a good c#*t who is genuinely being honest and I believe what he's saying.. Thanks for making a good video that had some gold nuggets for me to take to my game and Good Luck for both your golfing futures!
I used to practice in a field next to my house with just a Sand Iron, and also around the practice Green at the Belfry before they turned it into a Driving Range. Before this like too many amateurs I used to get bored with practicing short stuff and just wanted to smash long Irons and woods on a Range. Once I got into the habit of mainly practicing with a sand Iron. I felt I could just about hole anything within 100 Yards. Putting has been a bit neglected till recently, but now improving fast as I’m ::putting ::more thought into my setup and stroke. Thing that helps me even more is I’ve fell back in love with the game.
Really enjoying the content mate. Some of my favourite to watch online as it feels like your videos really relate to the 'average' Golfer. Gives me the understanding and hope that others are going through similar journeys and that I can really improve my game! 👊🙏
Rob, I went from a 12 down to a 2.9 within about 2 years at my best and a lot of it had to do with the videos you made. Especially the college practice schedule. Went to the range 2-3 days a week for about 3 months and didn't take a club bigger than wedge. That got me down to a 6 or so within a few months. Then started trying to work on shot shapes and flights which led to a lot more birdie looks and tap in pars. Got me down to 4-5. When I got on a roll putting, thats when the index got down to 2.9. Had probably a month or two of all rounds in the 70's to do it. Unfortunately, fell down like an old man and injured my wrist and elbow. Couldn't swing a club for 2 months and when I started playing again, quickly went up to a 6.5 or so. A year later, just starting to get back in the 5's but don't get the chance to practice like you need to stay in the low single figures. If only I actually enjoyed practicing putting, thats where the $$ is made. To this day, my best rounds are 1 over par with 5-6 birdies in those rounds on difficult courses. Thanks for the content and if you ever get out to southern California, your a welcome guest at my club anytime!
My practice time is a bit more limited these days so I guess it's all about making the most of the time you do have! I'm quite enjoying a bit of putting practice. Cali golf sounds great! 😎
Great video Rob, I don't even play golf but I found this video really interesting. Just checked out the website of our local Golf course, think I might give it a go!
Brilliant video mate. Really enjoyed that. Only managed to watch it today (28th) was well worth the wait. Deffo going to try to follow matts short game tips, it's something that has left me over the past 18 months or so. Having gone from 2.7 upto 3.8 (which isn't alot I know) but its a area that I can tidy up a bit. Would love to see you guys play a full 18 hole course vlog. Be great to hear both your inputs as you're playing. Anyway, stay cool, look after yourself mate & see you in the future 😉
The part about "committing to the shot" rather than worrying about the trouble on the course is important. "Feel it, See it, Trust it" has been my focus on the course which results in better outcomes. Sometimes, just not taking a practice swing first and just focusing on my target and hitting the ball results in better performance, too!
Appreciate the time you took to produce this, lots of food for thought I’m as guilty as the next man for just bashing balls down the range been stuck at 14 for quite some time. Need to give myself a reality check and practice the short game more often.
Great video, I was off 9 at the end of summer and now back up to 11.6 so 12 basically and I feel that made game is better and more consistent now than last year its strange how that works, I feel that I could get back down but like mentioned in the video its about keeping those doubles and worse off your card, its just difficult some times I put a lot of pressure on myself and always again like mentioned try to hit a worldie to the green instead of getting back on the fairway and playing from there.
At around the 6 min mark or just before he talks about starting bad and not chasing. I think this is hugely under rated in a different sense. Everyone can play good on their day and it's great when that happens as like in any other sport. It's when times are tough this is when you should be concentrating the hardest or at least the same as when you are on your best score ideally. If you can come from adversity in your round it's going to make you such a strong golfer mentally. I've played with people who have given up after the 1st 2 holes because are like 3 or 4 over which is silly. If I do this I'm trying my hardest to not drop a shot for as long as I can (Around my home track anyway as it's stupid easy). I'm a 10ish HC. If you want to become better at anything you have to have some fight in you to get through tough times. Rarely will you play your A game so making your B and C game stronger is a must.
Thats so true in not giving up, i had 30 shots for the first 4 holes and ended up 96 for the day. it didn't seem o faze me at the time, i was past being embarrassed.
I play off 5 and need 2-3 birdies to get near my handicap. Well that's how it feels to me. Not the right mental attitude I suspect, or want to be off 7 🙂
Video speaks volumes to me. I have the same feeling. A 2/3 handicapper who feels like they should be off 5/6, but i also know that my good stuff can be very good! Interesting to hear I’m not the only one who feels this way
Great video, very helpful. I've come down 4 shots to 12 this year and looking to get to singles. Quick question, what is the swing tracer software you use for the driver plane please?
i think it's more of having good technique that you can rely on during pressure moments...once you build the confidence, consistent shot hitting becomes 2nd nature...I think you build technique by quality practice of each element of the game...as so many point out, making pars via chipping game, 3 putt avoidance, penalty shot avoidance all leads to lower scores.
First of all your Dogs looking at you as if your mad talking to yourself 😂. When my Handicap dropped dramatically it was due to talking to my Range Teaching Pro. I told him I was on 18 and just stuck. He said he didn’t understand why as I hit the Ball so well. He suggested he would come and play 9 holes at the Course I was a member of, which was the Belfry. He turned up on the 1st Tee of the Brabazon and I asked if he was going to give me 2 shots a hole, he said no 1 shot a hole. I was a little nervous but soon got into a rhythm. I ended up dropping one shot to his 4. After beating my Pro without shots my confidence was sky high and my handicap reached as low as 1 within a year. I can put it down to Confidence and short game practice, which was practically every night after work. Unfortunately I had to give up Golf for 17 years and started back at 65, I pretty much lost 2 seasons with back problems and the lockdown. Started back with a disappointing 28 Handicap but have shaved 8 shots off now and starting to show real improvement. My best round so far was 4 over on a difficult scoring Course as it has 11 Par 3’s. I intend practising my short game a lot more now, so hopefully I can get my numbers down a lot more.
Very interesting. He has figured out what works for him. He does not have a conventional golf swing. I wonder what his lie angles are, due to the fact he stands farther away from the ball, out stretched arms, and his super strong lead hand grip. Thanks for the video.
@@mattpettit6762 Lol, do not google anything. Do not worry about that, I also am glad you do not know what lie angle are. Maybe just know what ones work for you, and know why some clubs off the rack will not work so well for you.

Ah I cut this out as the video was an hour long at one point! Weirdly, he used to always hit a draw. Then, one day (which happened to be the second day of Club Champs) he randomly started hitting a fade and has just played that ever since!
You say his misses were less costly, but he got away with some stuff too. Some pretty good lies in the rough, the missed chip on 18 that somehow stays on top of the ridge pin high instead of falling into a hollow etc.
@@RobMcGarr this was an interesting video, the key thing I took off it (which is something I’ve always noticed about better players) is how relaxed he is.
