Just test-drove a 2005 997 in Germany (am graduating from being a BMW guy to a Porsche). Would have brought tears to my eyes had I not been busy holding on to steering wheel. :D Hands were shaking afterwards, had to smoke a cigarette (and I dont smoke). An engineering masterwork of art. A bucket-list thing to own before you die. :D
Bob Dobalina Hey Bob ( welcome to the Porsche Family ) I don't know if you bought the 997 or you were thinking of buying one ? I used to be a BMW man as well until I went Porsche & haven't looked back. I have an 1983 SC but I'm thinking of moving up to a 997 2005 ! Any problems with the 997 ( assuming you bought one ) Greeting from Australia !
+leonard bullhock I think whether or not a car gives you goosebumps depends on how you drive it. An E60 530i gave me all the thrill I want on some mountain roads in the black forest and while chasing a 991 carrera on the autobahn. Also I get more goosebumps drifting a 2 liter diesel mercedes through the snow than people get driving their 991 Turbo S slowly through city traffic. Not to mention people who buy their cars to show off and never even touch the throttle.
leonard bullhock yeah the rear engine layout in combination with those engines works perfectly but it's also a matter of taste theres dozens of cars that would be a perfect fit for me.
the PDK shifter makes you push in the direction you want to go. wanna go faster (as in, go MORE forward), PUSH forward. wanna slow down (as in, go LESS forward, i.e. backward), PULL backward! it's engineering done right!
Wrong... and race cars prove that by having it reversed. When you're acelerating, Gforces pushed you backwards, so makes more sense to press the gearchange in the direction of the G-force. So when acelerating you shuld pull back the "gearstick", when breaking you pull forward, that way your movement is assited by the Gforces
Watching this in March 2020. (Just bought a 2009 Carrera S). Enjoying how young you look here Chris. Another excellent review!
Welcome to the 997 club 🙂👍
Congrats. Looks like an awesome car. I hope to own one some day
Don't own one but had a quick drive on a 2005 4s yesterday. Still solid despite its age and loved the engine note
Loving the 4k res of this video in covid 2020. 😂 also like the 997.2 and young Chris 👍
I’m looking for one!! Cannot wait to join the club

+Beeboy69 Yes. Research the IMS and RMS issues. Seems to be the best way to go is the 997.2.

J’ai une 911 997.2 et en mode sport je n’ai JAMAIS senti cette poussée en avant comme montré dans cette vidéo. Merci quand même 👍
Chris Harris is very good in this video - and yet - it’s interesting to see how much better he’s become at his craft.
Don't miss the chocolate parts in the 997.1
The pdk Base carrera 3.6 is utterly brilliant in Coupe form
Another Chris Harris video I’ve just discovered and quite pleased with that discovery!!
Good point on the exhaust. 997.1 without DFI sounds more raw. And I’ll keep my manual too thanks
Chris has grown into that top now
Chris Harris! I havnt seen this Porsche video yet !

+Jonny Oliveira agree
@@weed46 good point.
99% of other cars including all road and race cars have normal paddle shifts. So dont know what Porsche is thinking about here.
Is it better the a manual? What should you buy?
997 is my favorite Porsche to drive going to own one this year ! Where did you get that jacket in the video pretty cool !
First car Ive ever seen him like
Nice. Thanks so much for this video! It was very informative.
welcome to top gear
Anybody that needs launch control shouldn't have a driving licence
Mine was 225, so £270 a year for road tax.
