    As a park builder, Park Beyond might be ok. Maybe. The issue there is that you just don't have the control over your staff (janitors, mechanics etc) that you'd really want for that. Specifically, you can't tell your staff to work only in specific areas, you can't manually move your staff, and you can't even point out a problem that they need to fix as a priority. Flat rides are also lacking a bit of customization. You can impossify them, but you can't set their sequencing so if you want to change the ride duration or change who the ride appeals to, you can't. Still, the game has a lot of decorations and it looks nice, so I can see the potential to build really nice looking parks.
    Where the game really fails is as a tycoon game. There's just so little control over anything that you don't have many options to actually manage the park. It's very easy to go from making good profits to making a loss. And the coasters only ever allow one train per track. That transport ride Jon mentioned? It's possible, but with only one train on that track despite having multiple stations, you're almost bound to lose a lot of money if you build one. If you're looking for a theme park tycoon game, for now stay well clear of Park Beyond.
    Campaign mode isn't much better. I'm not sure who designed the campaign goals and objectives, but either the game changed a lot since those parts were designed or the person doesn't really understand how to make a campaign that most people would find enjoyable. To get the best score in each scenario, you have to satisfy team goals. Those team goals can take MUCH longer to complete than completing the scenario objectives. It quickly becomes a tedious chore to complete them. Some of the objectives to complete the scenario also seem designed to actively work against having an efficient and profitable park. Lots of others are just pointless busy work. And sometimes you do what you think the objective wants only to find it doesn't count because the instructions aren't clear enough - or maybe the game just doesn't realize you've completed the task due to bugs. And if you complete an objective before the game needs you to, the game will simply increase the number of objectives you need to finish the scenario. There are some very frustrating objectives in other park builders, but Park Beyond really does seem to go above and beyond when it comes to frustrating the campaign player.

  • @fuzzyfuzzyfungus
    @fuzzyfuzzyfungus Год назад +37

    It's possible that this is just an artifact of Jon not being familiar with it; but it looks like it could benefit from more data overlays:
    Things like "what rides qualify as 'reachable' for the purposes of guests?" and "what does my maintenance coverage look like?" are the sort of thing that really needs an overlay, rather than determining the situation by plunking down a ride and looking at the maintenance or ridership numbers a month from now, unless you manage to absolutely nail making them intuitively apparent by some more organic means.

    1st This MUST be this weeks livestream right? right? 2nd You could have fixed the Ferris wheel issue by moving the entrance to the ride onto the main path instead of it having its own split off. Other than that you have convinced me to get this game myself.

    Day 1078 of requesting Zoo Tycoon. Having learned a little about E.P.C.O.T. recently, not to mention that nightmare that is Action Park, Jon actually seems to be doing pretty well at the whole "violently unsafe but incredibly fun realm of a rich madman" part of a theme park. I still think he'd love to try the same vibe with animals though...

    • @rodh1404
      @rodh1404 Год назад +1

      The third impossification of the ferris wheel is even better, IMO. The problem is that if you play Park Beyond as a tycoon game, the design issues really start to show. Jon had some issues with park profit and maintenance in this scenario, it just gets worse as your park gets bigger. The bugs don't help with that, but the design issues are the real problem IMO. If you turn the tycoon features off and just use this as a park builder, it can work, but don't bother with Park Beyond as a theme park tycoon game because it's designed not to work that way.

    If you do turn this into a series, for future reference! ...the ferris wheel is consistently unprofitable. I've always lost money on it to the point where I don't even put one in my park anymore. The guests also can't walk like more than 10 feet without needing a drink, food, or a place to sit LOL, so making profits highly depends on having food/drink shops or vending machines everywhere! Guest needs definitely need to be adjusted in future patches but for now...just have to work around the quirks!

      Honestly, Jon's giving this game a lot more credit than it deserves. It scratches an itch as a park builder, but if you play it as a tycoon game or want to go through the campaign, it's a study in how to frustrate the player. It's not just the bugs (although at least on release they were terrible, and there's still major issues right now), it's also that there were numerous terrible, awful, horrible design decisions made during the game's development. Staff management is sorely lacking, flat ride customization is sorely lacking, shop customization is only ok (you can't set extras and portion sizes like you can with PlanCo, although lots of people don't care about that level of management). Coaster design is disappointing IMO, since what controls a coaster's meaningful stats is just the hooks you give it. And you can only have one coaster per track regardless of how long that track is, even if it's supposedly a transport ride with multiple stations. And as for the campaign, good luck completing each scenario with a top score. It can be done, but it takes a LOT of patience to fill those team goals.
