Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine Issue #1 - Sept. 1999

- Episode 57 - This time on the show, let's flick through the first issue of Official Dreamcast magazine, from September of 1999. Actually, this isn't the first issue because there was an issue #0. Not really sure how that works. This issue covers most, but not all of the launch games, including Sonic Adventure, SoulCalibur, Power Stone, NFL 2K, and more. Only a couple of games actually got reviewed though, and most game coverage comes in the form of previews. Issue #2 has many more of the launch games reviewed in it.

Show notes:
- Big thanks to Atari Age forum member "Vector" for basically donating the entire run of Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine to the show for the price of shipping.
- When possible, game play footage was recorded using a Dreamcast VGA cable passed through a Behar Bros. sync combiner and upscaled with a Framemeister. For games that are not VGA compatible, I literally pointed a camera at the TV screen.
- The "face cam" footage is grainy because I used the wrong ISO setting. It should be better next time.
- This is the fourth CGQ video to be sponsored by Dollar Shave Club. Thanks, DSC! You guys are helping keep these "Let's Read" shows on the air!

As of episode 35, it is recorded in RGB using an XRGB Mini Framemeister and an Elgato Game Capture HD, or an OSSC and a Startech USB 3.0 capture device. Prior to that, it was recorded in s-video using am RGB to s-video encoder and a DVD recorder. All videos are edited on a Mac using Final Cut Pro X.

I still have my original issue and was just reading through it a few months ago! I miss 1999 so much :(
90s were the last great times in America
According to Linkedin, Francesca Reyes is a user research manager at 2K games now
A couple of things, since most people don't read the video description:
- When possible, game play footage was recorded using a Dreamcast VGA cable passed through a Behar Bros. sync combiner and upscaled with a Framemeister. For games that are not VGA compatible, I literally pointed a camera at the TV screen.
- The "face cam" footage is grainy because I used the wrong ISO setting. It should be better next time.
You've been a busy man on youtube. Thanks for the video.
Unfortunately they most likely don't read comments either. On mobile YT, you have to scroll past recommended videos before comments start to load in a YT recommended order. I think this display format cuts back on people leaving comments.
@@WhatsOnMyShelf It's OK. I thought that I would get people complaining about the grainy face cam and my pointing the camera at the TV, but no one has.
Hey love the show, you can play any Dreamcast game you want by just burning them onto a regular writable cd. I have plenty of burned games as well as a nes full library disc for the Dreamcast. It’s amazing! I’ll gladly send you a copy.
First time commenting, day one listener! Simply want to state, Sega Dreamcast is most UNDERAPPRECIATED console ever!
Good day
I used to love watching Classic Gaming Quarterly. I still do, but I used to, too.
Chris asked me if I wanted a frozen NES, I said no. But I want a regular NES later, so yes.
Its ''too'' much xD
RIP mitch
I like Sega Dreamcast unless I'm with 4 or more people.
@Poison Mitch Hedberg. Comedian.
I like these vids. it's been awhile. thanks for the upload sir.
Thank you again for the memories. The Dreamcast was the first system launch I could afford with a teenage fast food job. I was so excited for this system to play Sonic, Soul Calibur and eventually Skies of Acadia, Shenmue and Ecco the dolphin. I was obsessed with this magazine premier issue with its launch coverage and still regret getting rid of all my magazines and Dreamcast system itself. Yet again your videos bring back the feels. I can’t help but smile the whole time. Thank you so much.
I think Katie was spending too much time with Rob at his bachelor pad, and her parents were none too happy. It was fun for a while, but Katie and the Dreamcast eventually wound up with older PC gamer Tad.
I remember waiting in line at EB games just before midnight on 9/8/99. My launch games were Sonic, Hydro Thunder, Blue Stinger, and Soul Caliber. I remember being the only one in line who preordered blue stinger, but I really enjoyed it! Probably my favorite launch lineup ever.
"Onnnnnnnnnn this epsiode of CLASSic GAMing quarterly" - love your intro, bro, and your Casey Kasem voice
Holy shit, I never noticed that.
He does sount like Casey Kasem
TNN turned into Spike TV which turned into the Paramount Network.
I still have my Dreamcast. Grandia 2 is still one of my top 3 favorite games. Good stuff, Chris.
Love this channel. Gives really great insight and perspective into how it would feel reading these back in the day. I remember when magazines like these were how I got all of my gaming news and info.
I remember buying this magazine and being stoked for Sonic Adventure and Dreamcast. Thanks for the memory lane stroll.
I watch these while studying in my game room. Gives the whole place a comfortable feeling. :D
Nice!
I still own this magazine...and still look through it from time to time...love it!
Holy crap dude I had this issue and all of the issues up until it changed into The official Xbox magazine! AWESOME video man!
Not even kidding, this is the exact same magazine I have under the bed that I am currently reading a few pages of every night before bed. There are lots of games in it that I want to get for my Dreamcast that I never had, like Ready 2 Rumble Boxing for one...
Nice jacket! Fernando Alonso and Toyota were unstoppable this season.
(I'm a G-nome)
Dreamcast is the defining system of my life. I bought one first day with money from my first job. I have more invested in it than any other system. My first game WAS Hydro Thunder. Unfortunately it was mared by the sound issues of those certain disks. Ended up replacing it with Ready 2 Rumble I believe.
Patiently waiting for your awesome Launch of Dreamcast episode. That series fascinates me.
Also, #FakeLivesMatter lol
Wooo!! Another episode, such a great series and trip down memory lane. I paused the video, not even seeing it yet to type this. I know it will always be good, thumbs up, and thanks for all your efforts in the production and same love our gaming pasts and all the wonderful memories it has created. We get a cahnce to relive it all over again in 50 minutes with someone else who lived it, and knows what it feels like, us kids and teens of the 80s and 90s must share these memories, archive them. No one else knows what it was like, our generation, like many generations, is unique in its own way, this one being retro gaming and all the joy it brought.
See this one I really dug...No disrespect to anyone I just cant relate to the mags earlier than like 95....this one is right up my alley...This one and the 2 PSM 97 issues you did...Seeing the RE Code Veronica and Shenmue images brought back nostalgic fall/autumn 99 memories..1999 was an awesome year for me....I remember getting RE3 Nemesis in October 1999 shortly after its release and seeing this magazine from my friend and him showing me an even newer and more visually impressive RE title was right around the corner for the dreamcast.good stuff bro! Also thank you Vektor for donating the mag...I havent seen it since 99...really brought me back to being 13 yrs old again...and Im guessing with a name like Vektor you were an Unreal Tournament player lol...thank you again.
Dreamcast was my favorite console for a while, not because it had the best games, but because of its tragedy. I was super pumped for the release, and even though I'd been a Nintendo fanboy up to that point, ironically, I got the Dreamcast on launch. To this day, it's the only console I got on the day of the launch. I went to a local game store (Game Mania in Los Angeles), which is no longer around, but I ended up with the last one they had. Apparently it was someone's pre-order, but they just sold it to me (LOL). But cut to... like a year or two later, news broke that Dreamcast was discontinued, and I was shocked. I just couldn't understand why people weren't buying it, because it really wasn't that much money, and the games were so wacky and fun! And EGM was hyping it up incessantly. It couldn't have received any better promotion and support from media, really...but then now we know it was because of PSX fanboys like you, so good going! Of course I'm kidding. Thanks for your awesome videos, as always.
it had alot of niche games
3rd party support ruined it.
A shame as sega consoles aesthetically always look the best and the hardware for the Dreamcast was like the forerunner to the xbox in spirit from the architecture of the console right down to the button layout of the controller.
Thank you CGQ...These episodes really take original gamers right back...To the undeniable piques of those influencial and original eras..............
Oh add more issues of this magizine please. I used to have most of them, but they got lost from moving. Awesome video!
Adding more video content of actual gameplay for each game mentioned would do wonders for your view count.
Sure the effort would make it harder, but at the same time I feel this channel will see the benefits from it.
Soul Calibur, Nfl2k and Hydro Thunder. That was my 9/9/99. Such a great, memorable day.
Glad to see a new video! I never got a Dreamcast, I was a broke 16 year old when it came out. I really wanted Sonic Adventure! Fast forward 20 years later and I'm trying to play 3D Sonic and it's so jarring! You're not the only one who feels that way about 3D Sonic.
Gratz on 100k subs dawg
That same year 1999 I remember i reserved the dreamcast at funcoland. I only bought it because of RE code veronica. Thank you for posting this brings back memories
I still have that issue😆my first game for Dreamcast was Blue Stinger and then Sonic Adventure. What really made me want a Dreamcast was Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Good times!
I bought my Dreamcast day 1 along with Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Powerstone and Hydro Thunder. I got NFL 2K couple months later. Awesome games and system.
Man I was hyped a hell for this video because it would be the first issue you covered that I really have memories of but it turns out I was thinking of the "0" issue and not the first issue you got here. Kinda bummed out
"Late teens...but hangs out with slightly older guys." 😂😂 swear i loved Sega just for theyre odd as hell rebellious nature, the Dreamcast was a beautiful yet sad departure and to this day still one of my favorite consoles in the lineup.
Still have my copy... Loved the Dreamcast.
You got the perfect voice for your channel
To this day I don’t know why Power Stone never became more popular. It was such a fun cartoony fighting game. Sega should revisit the series on the Switch.
It was a Capcom game, actually. And I agree, the two of them are awesome games, and the first one sold me on the Dreamcast when I saw it demoed at EB.
I had thr same experience with Sega Bass Fishing. Hand to God truth. Played a Japanese version in an Electronics Boutique in March, and signed up for a preorder as soon as available
Depth, it just didnt have any.
@@rickylovesyou
To an extent, it is shallow. But as far as Dive-In fun, this was good. So it did the Dreamcast a great service as cementing it as bot a console for casuals and hardcore fans
My only Trick Style memory is playing the game to completion in college. I played and “won” the final race. Essentially, I completed the race but very clearly lost behind the CPU player. The game chalked it up as a win but my roommate immediately yelled “but you lost!!!” taking the wind out of my sails.
Fave bit of these vids is the ridiculously long and deep ‘ooohhhhnnnn’ at the start
5:00 You're correct. No DC demo disc on issues #0 or #1.
It did come with a "Dreamcast Preview CD-ROM" which contains 29 movie files (AVI, IIRC).
I recently completed my collection with the remaining 2 missing issues that I needed.

Dammit, I saw this but it's my last day at new smyrna beach. I can't watch till later. I assume it's the usual quality Chris, so thanks in advance.
These videos are so relaxing to watch while I'm working at my desk. The Dreamcast was such a cool system when it came out and my best friend had it from day one. Sonic Adventure and Soul Caliber blew my mind at the time. I also really loved Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on it because it looked so good compared to the N64 version I had. Keep up this series! I look forward to seeing more!
Didn't know you were a Toyota Racing fan. Cool!
I use to have this series of magazines all those years ago, sadly I got rid of them with my Dreamcast. I miss magazine like this EGM was also a favourite of mine. Thanks for bringing back so many memories for me with this
The description and your reaction of Katie the newbie had me cracking the hell up lol..great vid btw :)
Armada is, in my opinion, one of the best multiplayer games on the Dreamcast. It does takes some time to figure out what you're supposed to do, but it's a lot of fun with three other players.
I know I'm late, but you remind me so much of CGR, your positive attitude is refreshing, just like Mark was.
Always enjoy these👍👍
By the way, I still have assue #20 and hold it near and dear to.my heart
Thank you! That's high praise. He was a big reason why I started my channel in the first place.
I love Armada! Never known a single other soul that had it. Fun little gem.
I worked on that mag for the first year or so as a freelance writer.. my old mate Simon Cox was the editor. We both used to work on Edge in the UK and moved to the US in the late 90s.
That's really cool, man. I'm pretty surprised to see how many guys like you have found my various read-through videos. Pretty neat.
Funny thing watching this first Dreamcast issue is that I feel like they cover almost the entire library, lol. Which makes sense since it only existed for 2 years.
When Armada finally came out, it was a very cool game. The two false DC groupies, Katie and Rob, were wrong...of course.
Loved this magazine back in the day! Pretty much was my bible for deciding which games to pick up. Unfortunately, looking back now, the review staff at this publication panned many great games which I now regret not playing at the time.
Great videos , thank you , can't wait to watch the dreamcast episode
Tnn became Spike TV which is now Paramount Network
Come ‘em coming. I love these episodes! It is sad, though, like you said, all them businesses that are no longer in business. Bad nostalgia. 😢
*FANTASTIC VIDEO‼️‼️‼️*
Toy Commander was THE best game on the Dreamcast. It was legendary. The premise was that of a kid setting up combat scenarios for his mixed and matched toys ala Toy Story. But this manifested itself as tons of ingenious levels like dogfighting spaceships that are being launched from the living room piano as though it were the Death Star and driving a race car across a perilous kitchen counter to rescue a hostage in a cereal box fort.
The real star of the show was the multiplayer which featured 4 player death match in a full scale, fully articulated, fully furnished home. You could dogfight as you tried to lose your tail by weaving through the lattices of a staircase or hide in a lampshade until just the right time to swoop out and surprise someone.
Legenday.
Nah.. it was a 4/10 score terrible controller. Weak ass grapichs.
But if they made a second game
That could have been a real good game
This is genius. I have all but this issue, so stoked I could finally see what was in it. Didn't know about issue 0 either, that's cool
Greetings from Brazil... keep on with this great work... love your videos!
WoW. I can still remember subscribing to this from Issue #1 to the final one. Lol
I never understood why the Dreamcast never had the staying power to make a success of itself.
I had one of those friends as a kid/teenager who's parents bought them EVERYTHING and he got a Dreamcast in 1999 and I just remember watching him play "Crazy Taxi" on it and being completely BLOWN AWAY by the graphics because up until then I had never seen anything that good outside of an arcade.
Maybe people were waiting for the upcoming PlayStation 2 release or gamers didn't even know that SEGA had just released the Dreamcast?
Armada is incredible btw you must play it! A true sleeper hit.
I regret not buying a Dreamcast back in the day.
It's funny in the context of 2021 and all of the stock market shenanigans to see the GameStop ad, and then in this 2018 video hearing you say they are on their way out.
seeing Sonic Underground advertisement suprises me. You would expect that this would be the time to advertise modern Sonic instead of making whatever you call Sonic Underground.
Good stuff as always bro, still waiting for that Game Players video though.
So many great memories. I have this issue somewhere. If I recall correctly, a lot of the weird decisions made in the magazine was due to a rush to get it to print. - Storminator16
14k views 700 likes ? wTF??? Cmon guys show this guy some respect!!!
I definitely had that issue of that magazine. So nostalgic!
This is cool! please do more!!
Wasn't that arcade stick manufactured by Sega, just not brought over by them in the US? A quick google shows that it cost $60. I definitely got one of those that Fall 1999. One of my friends eventually ended up with it.
Great work as usual, Chris!
Your audio is amazing!
That Ferrari game in the arcade had huge wrap around screens to simulate being in the car
I remember getting these at Walgreens and I liked the magazine
how can you stop pay attention to gaming? I don't understand I was born in 1983, and I have been gaming since 1985/86 on PC's consoles etc, I will never stop this hobby
Nice PVM 👌🏻
That was an awesome year.
Dreamcast Utopia v2 is a free boot cd that will allow you to play backups & imports
By the way, I had issue zero. It was free in game stores (not sure if you had to preorder the system to get it). It was basically a partial issue of issue 1.
Yes I remember the MTV movie or music video awards had Dreamcast commercials, and a Janet Jackson nutty professor soundtrack video had jet grind radio in the background, good times
Thanks for reviewing something from the late nineties. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Good times, thanks for showing this, very cool idea.
I have issue #0. I THINK it was given out at E3, and that it was like 15 pages of content repeated several times to fill out the magazine. But I may be confusing it with Official XBox Magazine #3. Idk it’s been a long time man. Hopefully i still have those kicking around in storage somewhere, next to my Virtual Boy game boxes...
thank you vector!!
I highly recommend Armada. It's relatively cheap too. Look into it!
He copyrighted. "Let's get ready to rumble" ?!. PJ and Duncan must owe him a fortune.
Gotta love that "Asiaton oleskelu kielletty" -sign you got there as a finnish person :D
Great video. I totally forgot about that Castlevania game.
the official DC VGA box was out in the US
TNN had WWF Monday night raw (why I remember lol), then changed to spike tv which is now paramount network if I remember correctly. Great video as usual tho
I loved the demos CDs that came with this mag
Code Veronica X was also ported to the Gamecube.
PS3 and 360 as well.
@@SlyBeast now PS4
hey love the vid a lot, where can I buy these magazines in good condition. I looked through ebay but the prices are all over the place.
Outside of eBay I’m really not sure.
I don't shave, but I just paused the video to buy a oral care starter kit & some soap. Thanks CGQ!
Sweet, man. Enjoy! I actually like their toothpaste a lot. Wife, too.
Hell yeah, I used to subscribe as a kid
24:41 It sure is. Right up there with fighting masterworks like Deception and MK vs DCU.
I still have EGM’s Dreamcast 9/9/99 Launch Magazine ! But I wish I still had my Dreamcast instead. Really regret selling my Sega collection..
I used to play the shit out of that demo disc that came with the Dreamcast. I did allot of fishing around the lunch docks in the Bass game, and allot of Monaco Grand Prix. Even though they were all great demos even House of the Dead.
I still have all of magazines and the demo disk with sleeves
I am a MK fan and I hate MK4/Gold. I hated it since the first day at the arcades.
I hate most 3D MK titles.
@@Clay3613
Me too
I love mk4/gold. More than mk3
Nice trip down memory lane for this magazine.I was a early adopter for the dc,bought at it's release to.The first games i got for it were sonic adventure and blue stinger.SA,definitely hasn't aged well as for blue stinger the most i remember it being a awful survivor horror game.I do remember completing blue stinger and shortly there after selling it.
