I rescued a 6 week old black German shepherd pup he's now 8 weeks old and I can't make anyone understand how much this channel has helped me train him just in the 2 weeks I've had him. I get compliments about how well behaved he is everywhere we go.

I understand, I really do! This channel saved us when we got a puppy 2 mos ago. We weren't expecting to get a puppy and weren't mentally or educationally prepared. Just attended our first in - class training and... We killed it!!!

@@kbail9806same and everyone at our dog obedience club is like "that's not a GSP she's so calm and well behaved for a puppy" 😂 but she's just had amazing foundations since day one. My friend just got a puppy on the weekend and the first thing I did was share this channel with her.

Thank you for saying that it’s okay to crate the puppy! We have a high energy breed, and at 5 months old, she doesn’t self-settle. She just gets more and more wound up and I think that, just like little kids who fight sleep, she gets a shot of adrenaline that keeps her going until she absolutely crashes. I have found that if I crate her, she’ll nap, and then be able to exercise more self-control after her time in the crate.

Honestly, it's nice to hear that even professional trainers have challenges when training. I've had dogs most of my life, but my current dog was by far the most difficult dog I've ever trained. She's a senior dog now and is great but the puppy years were ROUGH and I felt like such a bad dog owner for having such a hard time. Her life long dog companion passed away a few months ago and we're in the talking stages of adding another dog into the family. Your videos have given me the confidence and information I need to not be scared of training a new dog again. Keep up the amazing work!!!

I am so glad to hear that even dog trainers need a break from their puppies! I have a high energy 5 month old golden retriever and sometimes you just want to watch tv without a puppy getting into everything. But then I feel guilty for putting him in his crate when I should be trying to turn it into a lesson on how to behave. Too bad you can't teach a puppy to go to sleep on command. Hearing that Kayl occasionally needs a break from the puppy energy makes me feel less guilty!

Loved this update 😊. I was relieved to see that some of the things Euchre is experiencing, my BC has been doing as well, so I know it's not just me! Definitely agree about incorporating obedience into games of fetch to exercise the brain. This has really helped me (especially when he was younger and couldn't go on longer walks) and I love seeing my boy use his brain. Also thanks for clarifying re socialisation. I allowed my dog to say hello to every dog we met when he was younger thinking that this was what it was about and had to quickly unpick it as it was driving the wrong behaviours, so it's good to see a video that talks about socialisation in more detail and how to build it up.

      @TheEgluzis 3 года назад +1

Hi, I’m not a dog trainer, but I also have a puppy who can’t go to the park yet. So I can share what we did which was really effective.
Few days ago we went to the city centre to socialise and get used to being around various types of interactions. So, the first time we went there, I didn’t make my puppy walk immediately, we just sat on a bench and watched the surroundings. We sat like this for an hour and then he felt confident enough to walk and enjoy the city. So, then we walked and learned, and it was easy :)
My puppy is really smart and react to my commands well, so I could train him after an hour, but it might take a few days in other cases :) just sitting and watching

I haven't quite figured out how to get her to walk next to me so she just loves smelling everything..she also barks a lot and its scared of everything and I haven't figured out how to fix that either. I do love her though and I will keep trying. My husband of 44 yrs passed last august and she is helping me but I hope I didnt bite off more than I can chew.

Pamela -- you have plenty of time to train your dog. I got my Pomeranian at two years old, the only thing he knew was doing his business outside (thankfully). He is three and a half years now and has basic obedience down (walking on a leash is still a work in progress), knows some tricks and is picking up some agility. He is still very reactive with other dogs, so I'm concentrating on working with that. But with me being disabled (no balance and I have to have a walker/rollator when outside with him), it's kinda tough.
But be consistent with your dog, work on behaviors/tricks a little bit every day, be patient and your dog will be a wonderful companion for you. Good luck. 👍

i would use what your dog thinks as low value treats to reward calm behavior, like their kibble, carrots or lettuce. By low value treats I mean food that they're still willing to eat, but not get over excited or lose interest in it completely. When your done excerising your dog or training, wait until they settle, and get up and reward them. They may pop up expectantly looking for more treats, and that's okay. Make sure you reward when your dog is NOT thinking about the food. Keep doing this until you see success. If your dog likes to mug your hand or sniff at treats in your pocket, I suggest teaching no mugging. Kikopup has a video on that.

However during the day he seems to be very restless when out of the crate and not playing / eating so I lure him in the crate and let him get his rest there throughout the day. Is this wrong? I don't want to him to live in a cage but he doesn't cry or whine when he's in there and just settles after a minute or 2 to take a long nap.

I have a 5 month old border collie and it is very difficult to train her to sit down when people want to say hello.
When I take her for a walk, people just walk up to her and pet her, let her jump, ... without my permission or before I can let her sit 😠
It's very annoying, why do people think its OK to just pet any dog without permission?

Is training a 3 Month old puppy too early? I am not sure what type of training we should provide at this age. He does not have any vaccines yet. Thanks!

What do you do if not everyone in the family follows the rules you set for your puppy? Or what if they don’t agree with the rules you want to set for training?

It's your dog, you set the rules. If they don't then jeep them away until they agree to the terms. Let them know you want a well trained dog and that's why it needs to be this way.

@@derfskittlers6125 thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, it’s the hubby and kids that don’t always agree or don’t follow the rules I wish to follow with training. lol but fortunately, after hearing the vet or other dog owners give the same or similar ideas with training, they started opening up to trying my ideas

From what I have seen online it seems the general consensus is only about 5 min of exercise for each month of age up to 18 months. Is this the general rule you guys follow? Obviously forced exercise should be avoided in puppies but 30 min for many 6 month old active breeds doesn't seem like it would be sufficient over the course of an entire day?

wondering the same thing with my 3 month old german shepherd puppy, a 15 minute wlak is basically nothing considering the amount of time she stops to sniff different things or stare at other dogs + birds.

@@KurrieSauce You may want to ask on a few GSD specific forums and find out what people are actually doing. My border collie puppy would have lost his mind being this restricted. I finally just decided to raise him like I have raised other puppies...allowing him moderate at will exercise daily and but not letting him get carried away with it. I don't include time spent sniffing or rolling around like a clown as exercise but this is just my opinion.

I would really like to do the “line training” with my shihpoo at home but I have read that shihtzu’s have very sensitive necks and that I shouldn’t put a collar on for walks and training purposes. What are your thoughts about that?
    Thank you!!

Shahina -- I use a harness on my Pomeranian, works perfectly well. Depending on what I'm working on with him, I alternate a normal 6-10 foot leash with a 30ft long line or 50ft long line. The 50ft leash is usually used when I play fetch with him.
