Good color direction goes a long way. I'd like it if someone researched why color has become so mechanically applied in modern anime productions. There are exceptions of course but as a general rule you see 1-3 color sets used throughout a production and one is usually dedicated for dark scenes. Within each you will have maybe one shade applied, rarely two. But these colors seem to be static throughout the production and variation with regards to lighting or mood is much rarer than in the past. 2011 Hunter x Hunter also has the weird production tick of putting a white blur filter over most scenes during "photography." (Maybe to hide the resolution, since everything is done digitally?) It unfortunately reduces color contrast even further and truly frustrates the effect of illustrating darkness or emotion through dark colors. I have no idea why things are done this way since theoretically you should be able to match the same colors digitally.
