    Last month I decided to remove some packages... Accidentally I removed all KDE packages. My start menu was empty. I was shocked. Then I opened console, reinstalled timeshift and restored to the last snapshot. It took me 5 minutes to destroy my system and 5 to restore it.

    This is interesting. Why is root directory excluded by default?

    • @tougee
      @tougee 2 месяца назад

      because /root is the "home" directory for the root user, so instead of having /home/root it's just /root

    I just git source all my work, everything else e.g video, music, apps is pointless to backup because it can always be redownload again, but that's just me...

    • @longnamedude3947
      @longnamedude3947 4 года назад +4

      Well to assume all that stuff can ALWAYS be re-downloaded is a bad thing to do, I can guarantee that not ALL of it will ALWAYS be available to be re-downloaded.
      Also, additional to that, you cannot simply "re-download" your images, your photos, they are lost forever, your unique files and documents, they are all lost forever, your personal videos, they are lost too.....
      And, relying on free data storage services is an equally bad idea because "Free" in the commercial space is never truly free, and, you can never guarantee that the service won't changed to a paid service in the future, erasing your data or just removing access to it unless you pay a fee....
      If you want a true backup of your data, Do it yourself.
      If you want off-site backups.... You guessed it, Do it yourself.
      You can never, and, should never rely on third parties to do the job for you even if you pay them to do it.
      If you want the job done right then you have to do it yourself.
      Where do you store your Git repo? Do you self-host?
      If you don't self-host then you are still at high risk of losing access to all of that data one day.
      Don't take that chance if you can't afford to permanently lose access to your files, potentially all of your files.

      I think you need to chill, I'm fully aware of old sys admin adage "if your data doesn't exist in 3 separate places, it doesn't exist at all".
      I said NOTHING about personal photos, perhaps you should re-read what I said.
      And yes, I have my data (personal + work) with multiple separate backups, 2 cloud + 3 physically drives, that are in different houses.
      I lost my master thesis, this was a hard lesson, and I've since always made multiple copies.
      I'm a fan of self hosted solutions as well as FOSS, so you don't need to "explain" about how fragile cloud providers are.
      What I was alluding to is the pointless backup of content such as audio/video/images/apps.
      In my foolish youth I used to back everything up, but that is pointless as I have mentioned.
      I hope that's cleared things up :)
      Have a nice day man

      Déjà Dup is perfect to backup your PDF, text files, photos, videos, etc and Timeshift is perfect to backup your Linux installed system. I use both in parallel.

    why not create an rsync cronjob? Isn't this kind of a bloated way of doing that?

      Bloated because of a GUI front end?

    • @longnamedude3947
      @longnamedude3947 4 года назад +1

      @@rockdie9522 I second this question!
      Are you calling it bloated because it has a GUI?
      Thanks @Artcore for pointing this question out :)
      (A GUI is not bloat if it provides ease-of-use to the end user.)

    • @__-wv1my
      @__-wv1my 4 года назад

      No, I referred to it as bloated because you have to install a program with a bunch of dependencies instead of just running a command in the terminal. To each's own though, was just a question
