    Beautiful all the way Seb. You were blessed with the weather. I bet some of your thoughts referred to that blessing on more than one occasion. Loved that last forest camp - that was a sweet spot. We found one similar on my recent Wye Valley Walk. Well, I have more than 500 subs but you cannot get anything more authentic than seeking the soul of your late twin brother outdoors. There's real life going on right there. Any way, good start. Part 2 now. Mark

      @3WalkingPoles  4 года назад +1

      Hi Mark. Thanks for stopping by! And I absolutely agree that it was beautiful - I was procrastinating because had this idea of the WHW in autumn for some time already and always found excuse not to do it. Not anymore. And it was well worth it. I liked camping spot, too but there were plenty of them on the way and all free. I never had situation that I had look for something else because the place I wanted was taken. Unusual for the busiest Scottish trail but we all know the reason.
      Mark, with your channel popularity you are YT celebrity in my books. Rightly so - it's well deserved and I wouldn't dare to question authenticity. The micro channels I was talking about are quite often very short lived, kind like a shooting star and that's why I asked for help to spot them. And seeing your comments here and there I suspect you are pretty good YT shooting stars hunter. Well - you're here - that's the proof. :)
      Thanks you very much for watching and your kind words.

    This is serendipitous. Finished the WHW this morning, and am now enjoying your video at home. It's been almost ten years and I'm sure it has got more difficult since then (there might just be another reason...cough...unfit...cough). Last year the sheep on the Southern Upland Way got a loud rendition of Danny Boy - the WHW is a bit too busy for me to sing out loud.
    The colours of autumn through the whole route were just incredible, the weather not so much. Look forward to part two. Thanks!

    • @3WalkingPoles
      @3WalkingPoles  4 года назад

      Congratulations on the occasion of completing the trail! In my case it was second time, too. After 4 years and I find it easier but the reason is that back then it was my first attempt to do trail that long and I learned a thing or two since that time. :)
      I'm not singing out loud. I'm not that crazy. :))) Just normal voice.
      Southern Upland Way is something I consider currently and I keen to hear more. If you have any tips or good sources of knowledge about it, I's appreciate it.
      And agree, autumn is cool on the trail is you have good weather.

      @@3WalkingPoles The SUW was so quiet I could get away with singing out loud! :D
      So in no particular order
      1. Use boots and gaiters - the hills in the south of Scotland are mainly peat bog. Expect to have wet feet for a very long time!
      2. There are some very long stages between services. The bothies are great - I had a mix of tent, bothy and hotels
      3. Consider taking a water filter - everything is peat, so even running water looks like week long brewed tea. There are very few proper water sources on route
      4. It's a very long treasure hunt! There are hidden "kists" on the route. I'll leave you to make that discovery
      5. There are two high routes, one between Sanquhar and Wanlockhead, and the other between Moffat and Ettrick. They are both far superior to the lower level options.
      6. If the weather is bad and the cloud is low, consider doing the lower route at Ettrick.
      7. Have a short day from Sanquhar to Wanlockhead - the mining museum is very much worth setting aside an afternoon for a visit.
      9. Moffat is bypassed and off route, but is the biggest settlement since the start with plenty of services and is easily accessed via the Annandale Way.
      10. There are several places that have no or minimal services. New Luce, Longformacus and the finish at Cockburnspath.
      11. The official website is superb.
      12. Take a compass! While it is well waymarked, and the rangers keep on top of it, many of the posts are knocked over by cattle and the path can be difficult to follow at times.

      Walking the trail for the second time definitely helps to chose better camping spots and less people on the trail makes it available just for us. I'm very happy with my camping spots choices on this trip and would make only one small modification, but that's topic for part 2.

    Really enjoyed that Seb. Brought back a lot of good memories from a few years back when I walked it. I remember so many of the sights from your video so clearly.
    I think you're right about October temperatures being far more agreeable for this - I did it in May: the midges weren't bad, but it was quite a heatwave.
    Oh, and yes, I often get songs stuck in my head and when walking and sing away the hours. Or at other times just find myself completely lost in thought, I can be in a trance like state for miles at a time. That's why I enjoy walking on my own a lot.
    Looking forward to part 2.

      @3WalkingPoles  4 года назад +1

      Thanks, Mike. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
      I had no midges but I had ice on my tent when I woke up on Conic Hill. It was very different walk from the one I did in July 4 years ago. Much quieter (from a few reasons). Now I need to do it in winter, but not just yet. :)
      Thanks for confirming that singing is not necessary sign of madness. Haha...
      Part 2 will be tomorrow.
