I wanted to put something a little different together for this video; I hope you like it! I am a sucker for the big sound, you can't beat it. 😀Let me know which amp you liked the best!
NICE 1 Shane! All the PV Classic range are GREAT amps. I have a C20 & it a seriously good amp, except for the reverb. It sucks! WAS it an original MIA model or the later MIC one? Cheers!
This is a USA made one and the reverb sounds great on this - it's got the super-reverb thing going on but with a shorter trail. Thanks mate. @@DMSProduktions
Such a great video . I’ve got an old Marshall AVT combo and recently got a Les Paul and obviously the output on that is different from the couple of Strat style guitars I have .i got the Les Paul after trying one in a store and I played it through a Peavey Classic 50 which sounded great . Fast forward a couple of month and there’s a Fender Protone which I’d never hesrd of up for sale near me !! Great to hear both amps and they are both around the same price here in the U.K. second hand around £400 . Enjoy your Peavey but I don’t know what to go for myself !! 🏴
Great video, I was at Found Sound a week ago amp shopping. Even played that Navy 68 Custom Princeton! Was a great amp. Thanks to the help of the team at Found Sound walked out with an amp and very happy with my purchase. The amp room there is great as well
Thanks for showing the new shop - having them next to the Swop Shop on Elgin was why I moved to Drummond St! Plus they always had interesting lefties in there.
I buy waaay too much used and vintage stereo equipment. Scratchy pots are an opportunity for me. An easy fix but good enough reason for a significant discount usually.
Picked up a PV Classic 4x10 and a head the year they were released. Absolutely phenomenal amp. Out of the 15 amps I keep in my studio, only the PV's and a Vox AC15 are the ones that haven't been in the shop for service.
Hello Shane. I enjoyed this video. I too, have spent many hours testing and buying amps by doing these same things. My years of searching for my "best" amp came to an end a few years ago, when I purchased a JVM410HJS. I liked it right away, but going in, I did not expect the EL34's to be as versatile as they turned out to be. Once I became familiar with the controls, I was able to replicate all the other Marshall's I owned, including my JTM45 that has KT66's. I can also replicate all my other amps including but not limited to Fender, Mesa, Laney, Peavey, and many other amps, with some tweaking. It is now the only amp I need. I like it well enough that I am selling all my digital devices, including my GT-1000, my Katana Artist, and just using my JVM410HJS. If you haven't tried one, I encourage you to procure one and then set aside some time so you can get used to its controls. I find it to be the "Marshall" of all Marshall amps.
I was lucky to walk into a music store and as I opened the door, a Classic 50 was straight ahead and I was locked onto it. It was like meant to happen. I also found a E410 cab later, and bought that also. My reverb didn't work, but a tech told me most likely it's a simple fix in these amps. I never even missed it because the tone is so good, and I have pedals. A friend and I compared like 8 high end amps, and the we both agreed the Classic 50 had the best clean tone of them all. It's been in storage in my house for maybe 5 or 6 years now, so I'm building a current limiter to fire it back up( to be on the safe side, it's one of the early amps), I like it paired with a 115 cab. It is a back breaker,so I used a two wheel cart and straps to move it. A great sounding amp, this inspires me to get back in use.
To cure scratchy pots in a guitar or amp, I use Deoxit D5 which comes with a thin straw tube. Quick squirt into the pot, rotate the pot after spraying, problem solved. Phillip Mcknight on his channel "Know Your Gear" recommended this product for this application, works a treat.
Great shout. I used a friends one for about two years at a church hall (until it was nicked...). The 4x10 really moves some air, even at lower volumes and the one I used was killer with a blues breaker in the front! If I didn't have a Blug Amp1, which nails "that" tone, I would now be jealous and suffering from gear acquisition syndrome...
I like the Peavey classic amps too the 50 has a fan in it to cool the tubes I think Stuart Smith that is the Don Felder replacement in the Eagles was plays classic 50s
Great advice - bring your own guitar! I do that myself, except it's the reverse for me. I bring my main amp - a little Yamaha THR (I don't gig anymore). If the amp likes the guitar, then we're set. And never compromise. Never tell yourself "Oh I can get past this or that." Don't do it, no matter what If anything feels off in the least - walk away, or you'll regret it later.
Congrats on the amp! I've got a 1985 Peavey valve amp I bought from the original owner in 1988, dual 12 inch black widows in it all original. Wow it is is loud, loudest amp I have ever heard in that cabinet size. Massively reliable too, but just too loud for my normal use especially now I'm an old guy ill probably sell it one day if I find someone who appreciates an original amp of that era.
I watched an interview with Kenny Vaughn a while back talking about vintage Gibson amps. He said 59 is the sweet spot for them because they changed the wiring in 60. I have some other vintage amps like a 66 Magnatone and a 70 Fender Champ but my 59 Gibson GA9 is easily my favorite tone from any of them.
My experience is that scratchy pots are just dirty on the inside, and it's likely to happen to any pot. A bit of contact cleaner in the body of the pot can take care of it!
Scratchy pots solution: Many times it's just dust buildup, so roll the knob back & forth several times (somewhat quickly) for a min or so-- more times than not this approach solves the scratchy pot syndrome ;) Enjoyed the video!
Interesting. I may have to re-think my opinion of Peavey. I have tried about 4 of their amps over the years, and didn’t care for any of them. (Also did not care for their customer service or management style) Not sure if I ever tried that 4x10 model though. I’ll have to see if I can find one to try.
once the new wears off you could slap in some jensen or emenince alnico speakers and lift it to a even higher level of greatness , if your feeling real generous you could put some celestion golds in it , but they probably would cost more then the amp it's self ..
Thanks man! I love Jerry's shop. I go there every few years to shoot videos. It's a great place. I can't wait to see what his new place will be like in TN. :)
They do! They've been on my list for a while. I would have got the Twin Amp if it had worked properly, as well. It's a killer amp, and the 25-watt switch is awesome. Princeton's are awesome little amps.
@@inthebluesI had one of those twins. I’m sure you’d make better use of it than I was able to, but it was 90 pounds heavy, didn’t fit in the cab of my truck, and was too loud even at 25 watts! Sounded amazing though and loved the footswitch!
I had the tweed Peavey Classic 50/410 and it was one of the best I ever had. Had the head briefly too. Also awesome. Only sold out of fear of a breakdown, because both amps were pretty beat up.
I would have asked the shop to maybe clean out the inputs of the Fender Twin amp before I dismissed it out of hand, but you probably weren't leaning toward it anyway. Peaveys are hard to beat and I think the reason the Peavey Bandit holds its value year after year is mainly due to your singing its praises on your channel.
Something about those 4X10 Tube Amps....... I had a Fender Super Reverb back in about 1972. Then sold all of my gear in a fit of heavy frustration with not being able to find other Dudes as serious about playing as I was. Later getting back into playing (I couldn't completely quit!) I bought a Rivera 4X10 Quiana. Still have it...still LOVE it! Paul Rivera was hired to help Fender get back on track with their Tube Amps because he really knows his stuff. The company has changed hands since I got my two amps, so I can't comment on the amps made after he left, but MAN! They were amazing. Congrats on the Peavey Classic 50. They were great amps as well.
Great purchase! Cannot wait to hear it with some humbuckers through it! Nice long review please Shane 🙂 Especially want to see you carrying it a km from car to stage 🤣
As you already know, that Classic 50 will serve you well. It was too bad the Twin had the scratchy pots, and maybe some Deoxit could help, but you didn’t seem to be looking for a project. If I recall correctly, @LandonBailey has one of those blue Princeton amps and it looks and sounds great. Cheers to you on getting another under appreciated Peavey, Shane!
Shane you might dig the video of the 1960 Gibson GA-83S stereo tube amp a guy just uploaded. Vid title- *Homeskoolin’ Bonus “The Most Pimp Gibson Amp Of All Time”* About 25 years ago I let an original one owner early 60's Fender Vibro-King get by me. I was delivering pizzas and I saw it sitting in the young college students kitchen along with a Fender bass of the same era. He said his dad just gave them to him. He said he didn't play himself so would see with his dad what he should ask for the amp. He called me and said he'd take $650 for the amp. Sadly I had to turn down his offer because I was recently divorced and had my two year old son by myself. That's an amp rarer than hens teeth. Oh' well I've also had many great great finds in my life I did get. I got up at 5am one day for work, looked on Craigslist and just listed for $25 was a complete minty 1950's Wurlitzer 120 piano with the horizontal wire in the music rack. I b-lined it to Akron from Columbus and grabbed that one. I found a fully working AMPEG G110 Tremolo/Reverb 1976 FET Solid State combo amp sitting on the sidewalk one day with a "FREE TAKE ME" sign on it. It worked as soon as I plugged it in. I'm telling you it is one of the most amazing, sweet sounding solid state amps you'd ever play. And super versatile, you can plug anything into it. It's a closed back, front round hole ported cabinet so it has solid bass, but the FET's have a very tube like response. Excellent touch response. I know Keith Richards played the tube Ampeg VT-22 combo, but the G110 is the perfect Keith Richards honkytonk sound at moderate volumes, which the G110 can get pretty loud. I'd call it a must have studio amp.
He bought a Jeep 😂🤣 Great on fuel efficiency I bet 😬 I'm spying that HiWatt combo amp behind you I don't think I've ever walked into a store with one of my guitars to buy an amp. The only amp I think I regret buying was the Boss Katana. Not that it's a bad amp per se, just not my thing and a little over hyped when they cane out.. Second amp I ever bought was a 70's silver face Fender Twin Reverb - loudest bloody amp I think I've ever owned and couldn't get it to break up 😆. After that I realised I was probably a Marshall guy. Look forward to the new GSS with this store Shane.
Great amp. Now you might wanna buy an Accutronic 9EB2C1B reverb tank to upgrade from the stock two springs to an even nicer sounding three springs reverb like you can find in a Fender Twin Reverb. Easy and cheap upgrade that’s worth the money. (And of course creates new content)
I have the Prosonic, and I plug it in a Vibro King cabinet that I've converted into 16 ohm and my god it sounds so huge with 2 10s and 2 12s. I will never sell it. BUT it has nothing to do with the crystal clear side of the Fender amps family. That's why I'd like a twin eventually. The Prosonic is a rock/blues monster and it never ceases to amaze me even after 18 years playing on it.
Have you tried one of those Laney VC50s? I think you would love the tones you can get from those (I am a bit of a Laney fanboy tho, so I can be somewhat biased)
Yes. Four tens classic 50. Try two Classic 30 Heads w/ spring rvb In stereo. 60 Watts. Once you go STEREO You'll never go back. Peavey..." the Mississippi Fender" Clean and "the Mississippi Marshal" Drive.......in STEREO..... Your band mates, especially vocalists, will Love you. Lower volume, better sound.
! PS. I've got a picture of myself ( California Seppo) Walking by the Yarra in Melbourne In 1989-90 reminds me of that drone shot. Love The Cats and The Magpies. Lots of Love for Vic OZ.
I’ve got an S ton of Peavey gear. Classic 30 and delta blues 2/10 are my favorite. But my 1970 Vintage 4/10 hybrid is sweet feet. Kinda like a classic 50 with solid state preamp. I thought it was a classic 50 when I bought it, but then I was like where are they hiding the preamp tubes?
May 4,2024 was a new/used amp day for me too Shane. Picked up a mint Blackheart 100 watt Hot Head for $300.00 and it's a killer. Have had a Blackheart HD15H for years and it's a great amp but the 100 is a whole 'nother thang. Rock on!
This shop used to be 2 suburbs / 20 min drive away from me before I moved to the peninsula. It's a great space full of all sorts of fantastic gear. Looking forward to the Guitar Search Saturday video.
@@intheblues I just checked directions on Google Maps. My previous address was 16 minutes/6.8 km away. Now it is 1 hr 37 min/98.5 km. That might be different depending what time of day, but still a big difference either way.
Thanks Cheddar! I am really loving the tones. I was shocked how great it sounded at lower volumes as well. The master output control is awesome. I hope you're doing great man!
I let my Mustang V 4x12 Eminence conversion go a few years ago, I still got a Mustang V2 2x12 stock, the clean channel alone just makes these amps hard to let go of. A Mustang Micro just doesn't have the same clean tone as the original, they sound simulated AF. That Peavy however sounds ultra clean, can't wait to see the review on it.
they dont sound very good. my buddy has had one for years and ive played it and neither one of us like it. it does not sound like a super reverb. a super reverb , twin, or deluxe are going to sound miles better than the peavey. hes is now playing a marshall origin 50 head which sounds better than the peavey to both of us.
@@jasondorsey7110 yes he used an external 4 12 cabinet. its not the speakers. if you like the sound of a blues jr 3 or a hot rod deville or something along those lines then you will probably like it. its got a mid thats kinda harsh. it would take more than just a speaker swap to fix it. in a band mix it sounds ok but by itself it sounds horrible to me. a deluxe reverb sounds much much better, cleaner and not harsh at all.
I'm very surprised you said the Classic 50 is like a Super Reverb. I liked my C50 far better than any of the Fender Hotrod and Blues series amps, but it sounded nothing like my late 60s Super Reverb (still own that amp).
I spy the Hayman 1010 at 1:20, and the Laney VC50 at 1:37. I played through one of these a few years ago and was astonished at how good it was. Recently, I bought a 1999 LC30, and it's fantastic. In the early 80s I owned a Hayman Modular guitar, and to this day regret selling it!!! The Fender and Peavey amps in this video are as good as I expected, but I wish Shane had plugged into the Laney too.
I had a VC30 back in the day and I didn't love it, but he VC15 sounded unreal. I was tempted to try it, but these three have been amps I've wanted for years. Thanks for the heads up about the 50! :)
I've been considering a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212. But it's a but too much for me, as I'm not gigging for the moment, though I am recording at home and going to rehearsals with my band. I would need an attenuator or a load box for it home... Could a Peavy Classic 50 be something? Takes pedals well? How about the Classic 30? Maybe I should check them out where and when I can.
It great - a lot of this sort of stuff is quite like this often we find many things that are unusual are in places we not think of relatively which isn't too bad at all…
Shane, all you have to do to the Twin is spray D-Oxit in the pots and run them back and forth a few times! You probably could have them do it or you could have gotten a discount on it!
Of course, but why take the risk with it it's something else. All the pots made the same full volume crackle sound. I'd rather find another one down the track :)
Remember the days when going to the music store was about the smell, the staff, the products, the cool things….and not the RUclips video that you have to make during, causing everyone around to be a bit weirded out by being filmed or filming constantly….what a different world we live in today…..Cheers mate

I don't think I've ever walked into a store with one of my guitars to buy an amp.
Great playing and tone Shane!
Thanks, Eddie!
Have you tried one of those Laney VC50s? I think you would love the tones you can get from those (I am a bit of a Laney fanboy tho, so I can be somewhat biased)
Yes. Four tens classic 50.
Try two Classic 30 Heads w/ spring rvb
In stereo. 60 Watts.
Once you go STEREO
You'll never go back.
Peavey..." the Mississippi Fender"
Clean and "the Mississippi Marshal"
Drive.......in STEREO.....
Your band mates, especially vocalists, will
Love you. Lower volume, better sound.
!
PS. I've got a picture of myself
( California Seppo)
Walking by the Yarra in Melbourne
In 1989-90 reminds me
of that drone shot.
Love The Cats and The Magpies.
Lots of Love for Vic OZ.
another store i need to visit, thanks Shane
Congrats on the "Mississippi Marshall" Peavey! Great amp, so underrated
Those classic 50’s are sleeper amps. I’ve had a few of them over the years (both the 4x10 and 2x12 tweeds) and both rocked hard. Nice score mate
Thanks, Nick. These are great; even at lower volumes, I'm able to get great tones out of them. Wild stuff!
C20 is a nice smaller package & the Delta Blues 1X15 is phenomenal!
Hell yea what a great shop! I got family in Melbourne....maybe I should go visit family ( some guitar shops).
that Princeton looks and sounds fantastic.
Your sound, sounds Claptonist👍😎
Cool vid, great room sound captures 👍
I’m a big fan of the Princeton sound
One of my main amps is a Peavey Delta blues. You can't go wrong with that Classic!
May 4,2024 was a new/used amp day for me too Shane. Picked up a mint Blackheart 100 watt Hot Head for $300.00 and it's a killer. Have had a Blackheart HD15H for years and it's a great amp but the 100 is a whole 'nother thang. Rock on!
Nice, mate! Congrats :)
Great thing about the Peavy Classic is that you never have to say it’s a great amp “for the money”. It’s just a great amp.
The Mesa and I am done 😅😎
Good shout on taking your own guitar when buying an amp!
Honestly Shane you sound great through them all 👍
This shop used to be 2 suburbs / 20 min drive away from me before I moved to the peninsula. It's a great space full of all sorts of fantastic gear. Looking forward to the Guitar Search Saturday video.
Man, it took me over an hour to get there from my place. There's no easy wa y to get to Brunswick from anywhere not near Brunswick haha.
@@intheblues I just checked directions on Google Maps. My previous address was 16 minutes/6.8 km away. Now it is 1 hr 37 min/98.5 km. That might be different depending what time of day, but still a big difference either way.
The Peavey sounded great! Enjoy!
I always bring my own guitar because, as a lefty, there is a better than a 50% chance they don't have lefties.
haha, 100% - it's a no-brainer for us lefties!
Nice Kiesel btw
I knew you were going home with that Peavey. lol!
That Peavey 😍 great choice
Shayne you're sounding awesome on that Peavey. Feels like old times! 😁
Thanks Cheddar! I am really loving the tones. I was shocked how great it sounded at lower volumes as well. The master output control is awesome. I hope you're doing great man!
@@intheblues i'm doing better than I was. Thanks man. Yeah, it sounded amazing in the video. Great choice!
Great choice!
Well....shit....the amp you bought sounds obscenely good. ✌️🎸✌️
That guitar sounded great through all of those amps. Tasty playing, too!
Many thanks, JJ! It's my favorite single coil guitar I've ever had. It's got that steely sound thing I love.
The Peavy instantly sounded killer. You always have great content. Best regards from New Jersey!
Thanks, John!
Happy new amp day. Hope it`s not a back breaker, but I liked the sound!
Yes to the Classic 50! I wish I still had one.
they dont sound very good. my buddy has had one for years and ive played it and neither one of us like it. it does not sound like a super reverb. a super reverb , twin, or deluxe are going to sound miles better than the peavey. hes is now playing a marshall origin 50 head which sounds better than the peavey to both of us.
@@jhue73Has he tried different speakers in it? I've never been a fan of peavey's stock speakers, though the sheffield isn't horrible
@@jhue73 Funny you mention a bj3...I do have one but wasn't happy with it until after extensive mods, so I hear what you're saying
@@jasondorsey7110 yep I did all the bilm mods before it sounded ok then sold it and bought a princeton.
I'm very surprised you said the Classic 50 is like a Super Reverb. I liked my C50 far better than any of the Fender Hotrod and Blues series amps, but it sounded nothing like my late 60s Super Reverb (still own that amp).
Good thing you did bring your guitar, because I didn't see a single lefty hanging on their wall.
As an alternative I'd also recommend a Peavey Delta Blues 210 for similar tones
@@jeremybearden444 Thanks for the tip!
Nice choice. But that Prosonic...oh my.
Congrats Shane for the new killer amp, it sounds awsome👍
Thanks, Mark!
Remember the days when going to the music store was about the smell, the staff, the products, the cool things….and not the RUclips video that you have to make during, causing everyone around to be a bit weirded out by being filmed or filming constantly….what a different world we live in today…..Cheers mate
Yaaassss...the old days!
Those scratchy pots are a super cheap, super easy fix. I wouldn’t make those a deal breaker, personally.
I think you made the right choice mate. Definitely sounding good. 👌
This is a cool video. Thanks for posting.
Cool Shane. You bought an Peavey, (got 4 myself) didn't see that coming.
Was almost sure it was an Fender you gonna get (You had 2 on your list)
Happy for you😊
Nice playing also.
Thanx for the video.👍
Thanks a lot, mate! Glad to see another Peavey amp fan out there :)
You Found your Sound!
2:10 Those aren't scratchy pots. Those are cracked solder joints.
Ah! Thanks for the tip. Anything making a full blast static noise when I turn pots can't be good. Cheers!
