WTF Happened to The Warriors?

- Walter Hill’s The Warriors is a cult classic. Since its release in 1979, audiences have returned to this tightly woven tale of a gang of rebels stuck on a rival territory following a big gang meet-up gone awry. There’s so much quotable dialogue (“warriors, come out to plaayyyy”), and it kicked off a fantastic run for director Walter Hill, including 48 Hrs, Streets of Fire, Extreme Prejudice and even the recent Dead for a Dollar. However, the film was rife with issues, including a leading man being fired early in production and full-scale riots that erupted after the movie opened.
We examine all this in WTF Happened to The Warriors, which is edited by Juan Jiminez, and written and narrated by Dave Davis.
Can you dig it?

The fact that in spite of many rumors of a remake, and hasn't happened yet, is a blessing.
Can you imagine how bad it would be? A gang of drag queens, a gang of transgenders, and a gang of Karen's!!
If they do a remake I hope they lean more on the book so as to differentiate the two movies.
Nah, this is one of my favorite cult classics of all time. I'd be pissed if it were remade. You can't remake the vibe, the time period nor the authenticity of diversity. LEAVE IT ALONE!
@@wiseguy617 The whole thing was diversity plus in the book they're kids. Like 12-16 years old. Also in the book they're the Coney Island Destroyers, they wear straw hats with mercedes hood ornaments on them. Really easy to differentiate.
If only the original had not been made... Cinema for a Jr. High understanding of the world.
My older brother came home from the theater and began to reenact the movie. He stood up on a chair, screaming can you dig it!! He said that phrase for years. Instant classic.
Funny how things like that stay with us!
I'm so greatful I got to see this while home alone as a 9 year old kid. I was absolutely transported into another world. I was terrified and enamoured by all these gangs and to this day this is what my brain uses as a template for NYC!
Mate same, I think I watched it when I was about 7, Id wake up before school and watch it haha! I was over the moon several years later when the game came out on playstation and xbox lol
I was 9 as well, but had to wait to see it on video a few years later....because you know parents were like "it's too violent!"
Can uuuuuu dig ittttttt
@@daveyboy_ Yes........I most certainly CAN dig it!
Yeah. My local independent tv station played all the good shit.
IMO this movie did a great job world building. Every gang and neighborhood felt unique.
You should read Xenophon’s “Anabasis”. It’s what the Warriors was based on. Those Greek Hoplites had to Bop their way through one fierce tribal area after another to get back home. You can listen to the audio on RUclips.
This movie is the perfect example of "if it's not broken there's no need to try fix it"..... absolute classic IMO 👍💪
Nowhere to run to baby! Nowhere to hide!
Classic movie 👏🏽
Be looking good. Lol
When that music hit in the game you knew it was about to go down lol
WARRIORS, COME OUT TO PLAYAYYY
It's not love Ima runnin from...
Just the heartbreak I know will come...
Cause I know your no good for me!
But free of you, I'll never be...
Even though I wasn’t born in the 70’s, I admire the ambition driven to produce these masterpieces throughout that decade. And continues to hold relevancy up to this day!!!
there is something awesome about 70s movies
cinema before star wars and jaws was so much different
The amount of kids walking around in 1983 in Brooklyn chanting "Warriors, come out to play-ay-yee!" is something I'll never forget 😂! I was 5 years old, and I had no clue what it meant but seeing all of the older tough kids in my projects saying it scared the hell out of me!
Oddly enough, this movie inspired me to work under the the table in 2p
I hate soulless algorithms .
I always forget that
Unfortunately, the new plastic soda bottles just don't sound as sinister.
@@colinwilson4609 but beer bottles like the ones in the movie do
I was in Thomas Waites acting class in New York City for three years, and I can tell you firsthand he’s helped me grow not only as a performer, but as a person as well.
He loves to tell stories about being on sets, he looks upon them fondly despite some unfortunate circumstances, he has a genuine love for the stage and screen. He admits that he made mistakes in his youth, some due to his struggles with alcohol, but his experiences have given him wisdom which he’s passed onto his students for three decades.
He continues to be a mentor for me today, I’ve learned more from him than I did in 12 years of public school. I can not recommend his class enough. A great actor and an even greater human.
Great report, always good to hear about real connections, best to you.
The game is also a fantastic prequel .
Right! The game was EXCELLENT👍
I haven't played it yet. Tried to buy the PS2 version on ebay once but lost the bid.
Made by Rockstar by the way
@@greedo2660 Definitely get the HD remaster if you can, it's still available on ps3 and 4. The prequel storyline is fantastic, then you get to play through an expanded version of the movie too!
The game was not only great it actually made me love the movie even more.
One of the best movies ever made. Simply an outstanding work of art. On the level of alien, aliens and blade runner. Everything from the cinematography, costumes, concept, action, acting, casting, and moody, depressing atmosphere. And especially the score of the soundtrack. Even the ambient background pop rock bands chosen to give the scenes the omnipresent realism and authentic feel of the time. It's an insurmountable piece that is for me a must watch every now and then. Seeing it in the right mood puts me on the edge of my seat like predator. Never disappoints. Absolute classic 👍
I remember seeing this on tv one night at about 2am, I was about 13, couldn't sleep. It became one of my all time favourites.
I loved the game too!
Awesome movie and Rockstar did such a great job making the game about it, still remembering this nostalgia days of ps2 and finding all the secrets to that world 🙂
I loved the game. I still have it 🥰🥰
That game is fucking BADASS!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE THAT GAME!!!!
@Jackie Chan lolll facts!! You use the cheat codes after you beat it??
It was re- released as a digital download on ps3 as well
Best game ever imo
One of my favorite movies for sure and definitely the best movie that Walter Hill has directed IMO.
One of my all time favourites. I prefer 48 Hrs but this is a close second for me. I really like Southern Comfort too.
@@lennoxmate4064 Southern Comfort is (ironically) a comforting nostalgic movie for me. Good shit!
@@KierGomes I’m glad you like it too! It seems to get forgotten about when people talk about Walter Hill’s movies.
I prefer The Wanderers a little bit more but I do love The Warriors.
@@lennoxmate4064 Streets of Fire or Trespass IMO
Dad showed me n my brothers this when I was 13. This movie is so fun and ridiculous.
I can dig it.
We saw this at the theater in '79, it was easily one of our favorites, and to this day we still occasionally quote the line at the end of the movie when the main bad guy taunts the Warriors to 'come out and play'. Movie has certainly aged, but still very good.
One of the Greatest Films of All Time, Undeniably. “Warriors, Come Out And Play-Aaay!”
Classic! I loved this movie! Having grown up in the NYC, I knew every bit of the areas that were shot, so it was such a viscerally moving movie for me. Also, I grew up in the time period. I remember them pulling the movie from certain cinemas because of gang fights breaking out. Thanks for the memories!
“We hired a real gang member to play Cyrus”.
“Alright we’re ready to shoot. Where’s our guy?”
🤷🏿♂️
I remember seeing this for the first time with the directors cut dvd release when I was a kid. I loved it so much I watched it two more times that same day. Still remains one of my favourite movies. And I convinced my parents to buy me the videogame to go with it.
One of the best movies ever made. The locations, fight scenes, wardrobe, etc. It all came together with the realistic fine acting of a group of young actors that with their dedication, they put together a memorable project. They did their own stunts, some got injured but they pressed on even knowing that with real gangs out there they could be in danger. It's hard to imagine that there were so many issues and challenges that had to be overcome to make this movie. Because the finished product was so good and enjoyed tremendous success over the many years. I loved this movie, it seemed real enough and a couple of generations have become fans. I spent time in NYC in the early 90s, didn't have any issues while there at all. Had a great time.
No, just.... no.
One of my favourite film's since a kid. An absolute classic.👍
I remember watching this movie as a kid in the 90s(especially cuz I've lived in the Bronx most of my life) and wanting start my own crew with cuts(especially like the baseball furies since it's always been my favorite sport and the Yankees my favorite team) and run the streets of NYC and have cool ass adventures like the Warriors tryna get home to Coney Island...this film is the very definition of a cult classic imo it never gets old... thanx for the dope video as always bruh
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid and now as a 54 year old man I love it still!
Remember seeing this movie on TV as a kid and being absolutely fascinated by it and then rediscovering it a few years later on Bluray. Currently playing the game on PSP and it's awesome. Fills in the entire backstory and some events that happened on and off screen in the movie Original voice actors and all, really does it justice 👌
I enjoy this movie just as much today as I did in the early eighties! The baseball gang is still terrifying today. Just a great flick!
Yes!! The Baseball Gang almost gave it a futuristic “Clockwork Orange” feel!
They were DEFINITELY the scariest to me!
I played the video game before I even knew the movie existed. Loved them both.
Same here, I thought the game was one of Rockstars best
Then you got to experience the whole story (more or less) in timeline order. Nice.
Same. The game is so damn good
People: "you can't hear pictures"
Thumbnail of this video: "Come out to playeeeyaay!"
😀😄😆 Right!
As dope as a Warriors remake sounds, there’s no way they’d be able to pull it off
I say this ALL the time. There needs to be no more remakes but they need to have Re-releases!!!!! Stop remaking classics.
I wholeheartedly agree. It was a product of it's time, it wouldn't work today.
"Warriors.... don't do a remake.....
Warriors... *don't* do a remake...
*Warriors* ... don't do a reeeeemaaaaaake!"
I agree , remakes tend to be the destruction of cult classics
"Warriors.. come out to plaaaayyyy!" Gotta be one of the best improv lines ever.
One of my favorite movies of all time and it was an absolutely fun and amazing game on the PS2. Such great memories.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a certified classic! If you haven't seen it, you should asap.
The soundtrack is one of my favourites of any movie.
David Partick Kelly did a great job as a villain. It was so cool to see him on Twin Peaks.
What about David Patrick Kelly's villainous roll as "Sully" in the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, "Commando"?
Matrix: "Remember when I said I would kill you last?"
Sully: "Yeah!?!?!?"
Matrix: "I lied."
Joe Walsh with In the City at the end was a great touch! End of the 70s but still rocking
He was in the crow to.
An absolute classic! I always like to imagine The Warriors takes place in the same universe as A Clockwork Orange.
The ads for The Warriors were quickly taken down off of NYC's public transportation because of the amount of complaints. Imagine you're on the subway at 2 am in New York City in the late 70s after a long day's work and you get paid cash so you've got your entire week's salary, then you look at a poster with a huge group of threatening gangmembers staring back at you with the tagline, "These are the Armies of the Night. They are 100,000 strong. They outnumber the cops five to one. They could run New York City."
From what I've been told of New York City during the 70s, it wasn't just "The City That Never Sleeps," it was "The City That Never RELAXES."
Yeah, it got better, but is now worse again. Now it is more lone oughta-be mental patients. Still a lot of gang crime too!
David Patrick Kelly! He should have got some kind of award for his great beer bottle improv!! “Come out and playeeee”! He was also in “Dream Scape”, which was another very good, but under rated movie, and other roles, (usually as a despicable villain)!
I always thought they just came out to play....glad to know there was more that happened
"Why'd you do it? Why'd you shoot Cyress?"
"No reason. I just like doing things like that."
I was born in 99...far far away from when this movie was relevant lol but somehow I ended up getting "The Warriors" on ps2 and it was one of my favorite games of all time for sure.i remember rumors of a Warriors 2 game but that never happened sadly. Hopefully we get a movie remake one day
Love this classic. This has been in my once a year watches since childhood. Love it.
13:31 oh yeah! Streets Of Fire with Michael Paré and Rick Moranis. Another great film with a load of 80's rock music.
One of my top 5 movies of all time!
Please someone release this on a 4K Blu-ray Disc!
yes the full movie
Warriors come out to playeeeee! Yeah, that line still makes me smile, cheers 🍻
Still one of my favorite movies ever. Also one of the greatest Rockstar Games EVER!!!
I got good songs too
@@ktbecstasy True!!
@@jwilcollective816 thanks bro
I find it amazing that David Patrick Kelly improvised that iconic scene: "Warriors, come out to playeeyay!!" and it wasn't in the script.
Love this movie, one of my favorites of all time! I love watching youtube videos of the Warriors cast reunions in conventions and festivals and such, they're all older now but when they get together and tell their stories, they're like in their 20s again
Saw it in the theater when it opened. Watched it a couple of weeks ago on Amazon. One of the few movies that aged like wine.
WARRIORS COME OUT TO PLAYYYYYY....
They spoofed the plot in an episode of The Simpsons. It was awesome and hilarious.
Saw The Warriors with my h.s. buds as a senior in ‘79. This movie rocked!!
I remember checking a cassette of the movie soundtrack out at the library and copying it. Played it WAY too many times on my car stereo. The tune for the fight with the Baseball Furies was just awesome.
One of the most quotable movies ever made. Here are some of my favorite quotes:
Rembrandt: The chicks are packed! The chicks are packed!
Vermin: Those were some desperate dudes.
Cowboy: So was we.
Ajax: I'll shove that bat up your a$$ & turn you into a popsicle.
Swan: Everybody packin'?
Cochise: Yeah.
Swan: When we see the ocean, we figure we're home, we're safe. Why'd you do it? Why'd you waste Cyrus?
Luther: No reason. I like doing things like that.
Masai: You Warriors are good. Real good.
Swan: The best.
Every line that the new Riffs warlord says is epic, especially his first address to the Riffs:
"Who are the Warriors? There must be some word. I want all the Warriors. Alive, if possible, if not, wasted! Send the word!"
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have this on the DVR right now. DVD, and my daughter has also gotten me a Swan and Luther pop doll thing. I have them in my office. She is grown now, but I had her watch this with me one day during a school break when she was younger and she loved the movie too. We watched this as kids when it came on back in the mid 80's. my god i love this movie!!!! I forgot I asked about this some time back. If you have not done Blazing Saddles yet, that would be a good WTF happened to Blazing Saddles.
Great video! Saw this numerous times as an ABC weekend movie as a kid. Have been meaning to sit down and watch it again.
Holy Crap man...love you guys taste. You cover alot of good stuff. This is one of my favorite movies. The Joe Walsh song in the end credits still gives me nostalgia when i hear it. Thank you JoBlo for making my day.
Love this movie! My dad introduce The Warriors to me when I was 13 and I've loved it ever since. I made his day when I came back from NYC and brought him home a vest from Connie Island. The Warriors is on my list of movies that should never be remade next to Big Trouble in Little China and Back to the Future.
The feeling that I got while watching this video was the same exact feeling I got when watching videos that show insights of the hell people went through while filming “The Crow” and of course leading to Brandon Lee’s death. The Warriors is also one of my all time favorites.
D.P. Kelly came up with the iconic line from when he was a kid the neighborhood bully chased him home and stood in front of his house chanting “ come out and play “
It was an annoying neighbor of his as an adult. And it was the tone, not the line itself.
I might be wrong, but I always felt like this movie was the inspiration for a LOT of video games. Plenty of old 80's titles that feature fighting through gang territories where each stage has it's own unique flavor and new enemies.
Totally, the guy who developed the arcade games Renegade and Double Dragon said it was a big influence.
@@metalcali680 Those were the first two games I thought of, too lol 😂
It became one of the best beat ‘em ups ever made! The rockstar game is easily my favorite co op game and expanded the lore and depth of the movie
The game was definitely awesome. I played (and completed) it on all three levels. (It was three, right? Easy, medium, and difficult?) Getting to interact with all the different gangs that are (mostly) only briefly seen in the film was one of the best aspects of the game. Plus getting more insight of the Warriors' history was great.
@@skyden24195 yeah the prequel how they all joined and leading up to and going through thr actual movie was epic. Pretty sure it was like soldier, bopper and hardcore. Loved playing on harder difficulties. Then you had the bonus 2d side scrolling armies of the night game that was epic as well
Guess it's about time I played it then, I'm in the need for some more grounded beat em ups.
@@Crowens it’s an awesome game. You can play it on ps2, psp, ps4 and OG Xbox
@@sharebear421 I'm just gonna emulate it, glad to see it's available on PS4 though.
This is a classic and i love watching this one over and over
Great informative video.
In the early 1980s my friends and I rented this movie on VHS so many times and we would usually rent The Wanderers too, to watch them together. Happy days.
This was a awesome movie and your video made it so much better
Excellent background info. Great work 👌🏽
Just tapped the notification and I’m already excited. My favourite movie
I have good songs
Dude. I grew on on this movie, and films like it...thabk you for bringing this to the forefront. Have you done Streets of Fire yet? I'll have to check...
And David Patrick Kelly is one of the most under appreciated villains of the 80s. His turn as the insanely villainous bad guy in Dreamscape stays with you.
I first seen the movie in the early eighties. At the time I hung out with quite a few other teenagers , all from broken homes . Watching this movie was mandatory if you were in a "gang" in the eighties. I think some part of me said this is what family is , those who choose to stand with you no matter what. The come out and play line will always give me goosbumps
One of my all time favorite movies!
Awesome. My friends and I were 17 when it hit VCR video. I watched it many times after!
These masterpieces are raw and borne from necessity. Almost seems self explanatory and watching it so many years later, it feels like a documentary of that time
Props to all the cast and crew ! They went through a lot to get the movie done!
Thank God I put a comment in a week or two ago asking for this. Wow good on Jo blo
A classic. Recently shared this one with my son.
I saw this when it originally came out in theaters back in 1979. It was exciting and mesmerizing. The line, "Warriors, come out and play-ay" is burned into my memory. Such a cool scene. Love that movie.
Bullshit. You didn't see this in theater.
Love this film, and played the game for days and days when it came out on the ps2. One of my favourite ever ps2 games
Friends and I saw this at the theater in spring or early summer of '79 -- three times. I had no idea until this video that the movie had been pulled from theaters. It was an amazing cinematic experience considering the small budget. Although the effects were nothing special, the big screen gave this production an encompassing, diving into the world of the Warriors feel. There were four of us the first time -- then like 10, then a group of 20 or so. One of my all time favorite movies and experiences.
Great reaction, thank you for all the info! No remake, please!!!!! The Warriors needs no remake!
They better not remake this masterpiece! It is perfect as it is!
I saw this when it came out in 79....I was 13....still watch this Masterpiece at least once a year
0:11 "OK boppers, looks like the Richard Simmonses have bought you a drink"
I saw this in the theater in Brooklyn, New York, in 1979. I've wanted to be a Warrior ever since!! This is my all-time favorite movie. I always hoped there would be a sequel.
So that's where the radio DJ in John Wick 4 came from. Cool.
Yep. Something always brings me back to this movie .
I'm stoked that I got to see this when it first came out! I was in High School, on the baseball team and we were blown away by the reality it portrayed, with all the hidden confrontations and the masterfully coordinated violence...not going too far, but being ugly and aggressive enough to make us understand how these type of people existed. I wish the producers would've given more working cash to the directors!
It was on cable all of the time in the 80's. The two films that I would watch all of the time on cable was this and The Road Warrior.
This has to be one of the greatest adventure movies ever made and I for one don't get tired of watching it. I was never in a gang either.
I remember watching this film as a small kid, and that moment when David Patrick Kelly is taunting them to "come out and play" with those bottles...that stick in my mind... he is a musician and maybe that is how he got the idea to use those bottles, and his face is such, that scene has particular quality...
Great Bio - Doc about one of my all time favorite movies. Thanks for your research about it 👍👍
Thank you Joe Bob Briggs from sharing this film on Drive in theater late one Saturday night. Amazing film! In the City…. Great song
Easily a top-10 movie. I believe It came out when I was 13. Great job by all involved.! Every time it's on I watch it. Masterpiece!!!
Back in 1978 NYC was like that. Being 10 years old. Now it safe.
My favourite movie of all time. Nobody has been able to catch the same creepy yet endearing vibe
There is no fucking way this movie gets remade and it is even half as good as the original. They should do something different, and just let the Warriors be. Maybe use the same concept, but forego the Warriors.
David Patrick Kelly ....absolutely genius move with the clicking bottles...and come out and play yay chant...didn't know he improved that until about 10 years ago
First watched it at a slumber party in the mid 80's and I was hooked.
I recently got my hands on a Blu-ray Directors cut, easily one of the best movies I've ever had the good luck to watch.
I got into this movie in early eighties England on VHS.Loved it.Thought Id never visit NYC and never, ever ride the subway.Eventually moved to the eastern U S and have visited NYC over 100 times, riding the subway most visits. That first visit and especially that first subway ride brought the movie back to me in dramatic fashion...
Warriors 2 could be set in 2024, but the original gang, now all older, is in a similar circumstance but they have to cross the entire USA while avoiding every gang and cop out looking for them via the internet instead of a radio announcer.
If you like The Warriors but haven't seen "Streets of Fire," be sure to check it out. For some reason it's not nearly as well-known, despite being every bit as wild and stylish - and from the same director! Totally underrated.
Streets of Fire is an awesome movie
Willen DeFoe was in it as well as Bill Paxton, with Michael Pare as lead. IU loved that movie. It's in my DVD collection along with this one.
One of my all time favorite movies and what a great game it had
Started playing the game and watching the movie when I was 5 and still play/watch it to this day
Nothing happened to that movie. It will live on forever. Classic 1970's movie with a great cast.
Great backstory! Something so real and raw about allot of 70s films. I've probably watched this film more than any other, probably about 10-15 times.
