Dude you played some badass riffs. The last sounds so much dude ranch era style. I roughly think he plays on an overdrive channel in all the Ava records with small humbuckers. Plus must be those semihollow body guitars that give that kinda soft rock tone.
Thanks dude! Glad you dug it. His semi-hollow guitars play a huge part in why the tone is so different now, when combined with the vox/fender amps. All in all just a softer tone
Awesome video! Recently Aaron Rubin have said that, during the Jerry Finn era, the studio tone for Tom in almost every song was: A Marshal "half-distorted", a Mesa full distorted and a Fender Twin Reverb 100% clean.
This dude has a great presentation style. Really like this video. A lot of these videos get boring, he kept me throughout the ads. Worth it. Rock on man.
Great video! The Pics from Enema... they are from the Self Titled session. Royer Labs has it wrong for some reason. You can tell by Ryan Hewitt being in the pics, who did not record Enema. Also, that fender in the pics is called a Fender Dual Professional which I believe had Vintage 30s in it. Cheers!
Really loved the breakdown you gave here and also why you went with what you did. Those Poulin amps are fantastic, I used to use them all the time for recording. Currently trying to dial something similar to this with my JA-90 in the Helix.
Hey Andy! Enjoying the videos. Just two questions about recording guitars: 1. Did you pan the clean amp and distorted amp hard left and hard right? 2. are your guitar tracks in mono or stereo? Thanks!
I believe in this example I double tracked through both amps and split one of each left and right. I always track guitar in mono, multi track, and pan to add width!
I found it amusing at around 12:20 when he said he assumed it was the same speakers right after showing the image that said the triple rectifier was driving V-30s while the JCM was driving greenbacks. Honestly they're both great speakers, they just stand out a bit in different spots. Still a great tone demo and I assume the he just wasn't looking at the image while recording.
Yea, I would have found that photo afterwards during the editing process. I had read in an interview he just used v30's, but obviously he was trying out some different things. The more of these tone research videos I do, the more I realize how much the V30's are basically the goto speaker for everyone
Hey! Love this video. I downloaded amplitube 5 after watching. I can’t seem to get passed a random hiss that happens every 10-15 seconds. Why is that? I also can’t find the amps your using to create the same tone. Thanks!
Great video. Amazing production quality. Not sure if I missed it, but did you actually blend the drive and clean tones together on the “drive” parts of the song (separate tracks/same take)? If so, when it’s a “clean” part of the song, do you duck the drive tone? Not sure if this was covered but curious.
Thanks a bunch! The first time you hear the tone it's a blend of both, as well as the full mix and the end of the video when I'm riffing. Basically I recorded both amps onto individual tracks and then just muted them as needed.
Hey I was trying to install the poulin amps. I got them installed but studio one wasnt recognizing them for me. Maybe the plugins dont support 64 bit because of how old the are maybe. Im not sure but can someone please help me out.
Are you on windows? I'm using an old mac computer so I'm not 100% sure how to troubleshoot for Windows. If you can't get into work Amplitube 4 has a solid free base amp you can use, I did another video covering a tone that uses that amp. Let me know if you figure it out!
Awesome video dude! I know you said it would be hard to emulate the AvA sound with free plugins, but if you could do a video on the Ava WDNTW delay sound we all know, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, I have the same pop punk EZX as you! Love it. What is your favourite preset, I find the basic one most realistic, but I also dig The Knife preset for more poppy/mainstream sounding songs.
That's totally something I could look into doing 🤙 as for the Pop Punk EZX I mostly use the Pop Punk preset and then change a few things around on the kit...the SJC snares are insane!
My friend actually bought one of those Irig, and downloaded a tone app they have tom's tone on that app Speaking of irig, it would be nice if you make a review vid😁
At the end you say you won't stop like Tom even if you played through his gear and recording setup, why is that? I don't think unique fingers makes that much of a difference or something does it? Anyway, my guitar just sounds bad no matter what I do, even following this tutorial it always just sounds either too muffled or too much static noise in the high end. Just changed the strings and it is still darker than other people's samples I've worked with.
A player's true sound comes from their hands. Everything else works together, but Tom is the only one who plays EXACTLY like Tom, so he's the only one that will sound EXACTLY like Tom. It's important that we remember that we want to be influenced by other players, not just try to copy them. At least that's my point of view. Sounds like it might be a pickup issue, but it could be any number of things (patch cable, interface, etc) I'd need to know more about your guitar and setup to offer any helpful feedback.
Try the GE Labs app, it's free. Search the "tone cloud" for "blink". There's only one preset there (mine), and it nails TOYPAJ/Enema spot on. I've been looking for 20 years to get these tones, and this is my endgame. If you want to use something else keep one thing in mind: push the power amp as hard as you can (volume/master on MAX) and then bring up the gain only until the palm mutes sound right. Using pedals or preamp gain will just make it sound like muddy metal.
@@anndynegative ok thanks, I probably shoulda looked there 😂 this was probably the most helpful video I’ve ever seen about getting toms guitar tone without all the expensive gear, thanks alot!
