In my opinion, I consider the first game as the most AC game.
When I play it I feel like a real assassin. All the missions are related to the brotherhood and the creed, you fight the templars directly. The atmosphere and the dark colors are the most convenient colors to the theme of assassins between all the AC games. I didn’t really mind the repetitive hunt for the nine mission, because it really made me feel like an assassin who didn’t care about the escape plan but only the target. That’s what i mostly liked about Altaïr and the first game. The one thing that the first game did better than all the other sequels is making you realize when it’s time to run. Every single detail in this game makes you feel like an assassin, which I really miss in the other games. God I love this Game.

I agree on absolutely everything you said except for the part 'didn't care about the escape plan, only the target' since as you gather information on your target and location and review it before you go off to shank them you can make an extremely good plan of whom to assassinate first to get in and out easier, how to approach your target and equally how to piss back off again. be it scholars hanging out somewhere, an easy way onto the roof, an exact map of where guards are stationed so you can thin them out to make your escape easier, whatever. first time I played it I ended up making a plan around every area following it as long as possible and then adapting to the situation - making your own mission objectives is the thing that got me hooked on this game, I play it once a week at least xD
also the more you help out citizens the more advantageous the city becomes for you - it's a really simple system but extremely effective imo -, scholars for you to hide among, and vigilantes holding up guards so you can get away and break line of sight as you escape slowly spreading over the city as you keep helping folks added a really nice touch I think.
I also love the fact you can just get 3 pieces of intel to roughly estimate the situation and decide to go in and ruin their day, but if you engage with every challenge along the way (as in seeing the monotony and apparent simplicity as an opportunity to try out fun stuff and experiment with the mechanics) and the information you get, you as the player get relevant in game information and the skill to properly act upon it as altair gains information and proves himself in these tasks.
it's hugely rewarding and immersive gameplay and I've been missing anything coming close to it for a while now in ac...
1 is my favourite in many regards, brotherhood lurking just a bit over it in some others
oh also the vault is the most amazing thing and I hate ubisoft's guts for removing it. the animations are still there, just let me activate it like in the first game, dammit! (sorry, still bitter about that lol)

      Oy Blech
Yeah you’ve got a solid point, the system of the game is so simple yet really effective just like you said.
But when I said that he didn’t care of an escape plan, I didn’t mean he doesn’t have one, I simply pointed out that this is the way Altaïr works, his main goal is only to kill the target, and after that, the chase and the escape begins. And I really love his personality and character because he can always find an escape plan no matter the situation.
For exemple, in the very first mission of the game, when Altaïr and Malik were in the temple in Jerusalem with Robert De Sable, he didn’t care if he would actually make it out of the temple, he just wanted to strike and kill his target, who was a big threat to the brotherhood. He only cares about the brotherhood and always tries to protect it, even if it meant sacrificing himself. I know he made a mistake when he did that in the temple, but his journey in the game didn’t actually change his way of working, but his way of thinking. And that’s why I love him.

I've gone back to playing the AC games and, as much as I love AC2 and Ezio, something about AC1 and Altaïr just made me appreciate that game and narrative alot more than before. Altaïr started off as an arrogant and bullheaded person, thinking he could do whatever he wanted, and that got the brotherhood in serious trouble to the point that Masyaff castle was attacked.
Stripping Altaïr of his rank and forcing him to basically start from a novice is a great narrative tool to get the player to learn how to play the game and you follow Altaïr, listening to him go from someone who just wanted to get it over with, to someone who began to really consider what it was he was doing and whether or not he was in the wrong.
While the cities of Damascus, Acre and Jerusalem are muted in terms of color, I always thought it was to showcase how bleak the atmosphere is due to the Crusades, as well as the poor districts. Also, AC1's soundtrack...damn man, it's amazing to listen to.

  • @Mr.Vini2204
    @Mr.Vini2204 3 года назад +32

To be honest, I think AC1 looks better than AC2. I don't think the colors look washed at all. Each city has a different color filter, while Masyaf and the Kingdom have a neutral filter, making the locations looking and feeling different from each other. While AC2 does the same, with Venice being more blue and Florence more orange, I think it looked better on AC1, not to metion the fact that the attention to details in AC1 is bigger. Altair robes moves with the wind, each step creates dust that follows the same direction as the robes, the backgrounds for each city and map are bigger and have more of a grand feeling. In AC2 you don't have such details, and the backgrounds (Looking over the playable area) are simpler, less grand.
Don't get me wrong, AC2 is still a beautiful game, the Venice Carnival looks amazing, the cities are vibrant and lively, but in my opinion AC1 is even prettier.

Great! I only disagree about the combat, which I enjoy much more in AC1. AC2’s, despite having more features, always felt too slow and static to me. In AC1, you always have a way to kill enemies instantly if you time it right. Plus, there’s the awesome fact that you can also instant assassinate them if you pay attention to when they look scared or distracted.

Ok hear me out, I think AC1 was way better than AC2
While Ezio had a motivation which was more clear and relatable, I still liked Altair much more. Like you said, most of the times he doesn't even know why he's killing his targets, he just kills them because Al Mualim says so, BUT thats intentional, thats a major plot point in his story. Altair is a trained Assassin by birth. He was trained to follow his master's command without question, without doubt.
Assassins were trained to not show emotion or fear death, but what makes Altair great is that even tho he is trained to be this elite killing machine, he still is human. Despite all his training, with each target who's life he takes, he feels doubt, he feels maybe they have some truth in their words, and sometimes, he feels guilt even.
He goes from being this arrogant young egoistic Assassin to being a wise mentor who reformed the entire brotherhood not just because he learnt form his friends like Ezio, but he learnt from his enemies too, and most importantly he learnt from his failures and his orders failures. He was the one to question everything around him.
And I LOVED the setting SOOO MUCH. The best part about this setting is that this is the only time period which we know of where assassins actually existed. Yes you heard me right, THE ASSASSIN WERE REAL. The game explains it as this was the time period where Assassins made themselves public. Also the crusades were such a diverse and interesting time period. Assassins, Saracens, Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonics... just a perfect setting for an Assassin's Creed game. I liked it way more than renaissance Italy but thats subjective
And man, the music. It was so, SO GOOD. It felt like a weird mix of medieval and modern, with instruments you wouldn't really expect. with so many different cultural instruments and tones mixed to truly portray this diverse and strange world.
The atmosphere too was great, it constantly felt like a science fiction game even tho it was based in history, the music just adds to it. This game felt so grounded and had a dark yet realistic tone, it felt like something that could have happened in real history. I feel like AC II felt more hollywood-ish
However I do agree that some of the gameplay stuff in AC2 were better, but overall I just liked the story, feel and atmosphere of AC1 more. Keep in mind that all of this is just my opinion and I am not saying it is wrong to like AC II more, thanks for reading :)

Why not see the repetitiveness in another way?
It completely parts with Altaïr's cold personality and the fact that he only obeys orders, and that's it. He doesn't decide as Ezio do, simply because Altaïr is in a military-ranged organization (way of speaking when I say military-ranged), while Ezio is more a guy who follows the precepts of the creed rather than being an actual assassin.

The core of his arc is complete - he starts not understanding the Creed and finished realizing what the Creed really means, which manifests in many different forms related to that: at first he is arrogant but then he becomes more humble, at first he rushes into action but then he makes sure to analyze the situation and consequences of his actions, at first he just listens to what he is told but then he thinks for himself (which is what helps him escape the actions of Al Mualim's betrayal in Masyaf).
So what is missing from AC1 that in the context of that game in particular is not enough for you to feel like Altair is a complete character?

I love ac2 and it’s my favourite game so I’d say it’s better, but AC1 was the best assassin game ever created and can’t be topped because of the setting and real history behind the game, mainly because the assassins brotherhood was based of a real order of assassins, and it felt way more mysterious and the modern day won’t be topped by any new ac. The modern day ending in AC1 is probably one of the best ending in any game really making you look forward too ac2. I know I say I like ac2 more but ac1 has a special place in my heart haha.

If I started in AC 2 I probably wouldn't be that much invested in the story. But that's just me, cause WHEN TF DOES EZIO BECOME A PROPER ASSASSIN? I've played for 20+ hours and I haven't heard the Creed once. It's like, the game expected everyone to have played AC1

I actually like AC1 graphics more. I think objects look sharper and the ligthing adds to the overall feeling of the area and period. You can feel that there is a war going on. To me AC2 textures for some reason appear lower res and it also looks a little more "cartoonish".
I also think that Ezio's robes in AC2 (and AC:B) look way too extravagant and out of place. It would be impossible to blend into crowd in them. The bright white hooded robe with bright red accessories would be seen from miles away. Especially since no one else on the streets is wearing anything even slightly resembling this attire.
Also fighting moves in AC1 look more realistic in my opinion.

AC1 was the only Assassin's Creed that was taken seriously. I don't think Ubisoft intended to make sequels to this game, and it looks like they put all their team skills into developing the game to make it as realistic and immersive as possible. I played AC1 on Xbox 360 when it first came out and it has been one of my greatest video game experiences ever, other ones are Medal of Honor Allied Assault on the PC and COD 4 Modern Warfare on the X360. Nobody mentions the fact that AC1 has an open world aesthetic. You start as an assassin that almost gets killed and then you get presented with a horse that you can ride from town to town and in between those town you had an open world where you found flags and kill hidden templars, the way Altair touched and walked through people felt more real since AC1 had bigger crowds, also AC1 had better cinematics than AC2. Overall AC1 was a masterpiece experience while AC2 was more of a filter that took AC1 idea and just made it smaller, simpler, and fun. Though I prefer AC1 it's more challenging and feels more realistic in every way.

I honestly feel like the stealth was partially downgraded from AC1, sure AC2 adds some neat gadgets which spice things up but it downgraded social stealth through crowd blending which is way less consistent than the crowd button AC1 had, making social stealth feel almost rng based sometimes leading to you not using it as much as you did in one, I also agree in theory that AC1 should give you more freedom with how you choose to approach but with how rigid that game's mission design is, I actually think you have less because if you try to be creative especially during the Assassinations, the game will just desynch you half the time for not doing exactly what it told you to do, where in AC1 most assassinations can be tackled in a variety of ways since the only objective the game cares about is if your target dies or not which leads to much more creativity in your approach, this is one of the major reasons I prefer AC1

Obviously all of the sequels are gonna be better in pretty much every way, but the original was the innovator, and none of the sequels would exist without it. You cant ask which one was better in this case because 2 is OBVIOUSLY better as a game, but 1 was original, and that deserves all the respect that any of the sequels got and then some for being the inspiration

Altair's story of redemption and betrayal is phenomenal and the Templars are so memorable as well. Not to mention, the Creed felt lively and true while many other games fail in that aspect. Playing AC2, it felt as though you were the only true assassin even knowing the other assassins, they felt lackluster. ACB improved it with the recruits but it still never felt like an actual Brotherhood to me.
And the stealth in AC2 felt weak. Archers on almost every building and soldiers had perfect vision where they'd spot you near instantly.

Not biased reply but first game actually felt like assassin game
That hidden castle of assassin on top of mountain ,only one way to get in and on other side there is sea, those assassin bureau, before every mission almualim sending message through birds to bureau, before every assassination first we need to collect info about target, thing I like most is we first see a cruelity of target ,suspecting targets by standing between the crowd and seeing the conversation of target and victim without being, exposed,if you run too fast you will ge exposed, after and before every mission almualim give us teaching like what we are doing and why,and also we gaining respect and rank in Assassin ,that training and marching parade in Assassin city is like yes only elites are trained here,
Also the combat system is not one sided enemies are chalanging and total combat is manual not like new ac games just press e and left mouse button and target finished
,and also there is a complete path to travel to each city ,it's just amazing game ,amazing experience
I played every assassin game but only acq give you feeling assassin
An sneaky men that eliminates high profile target secretly , having. Mentor in a very hidden and well defended place planing every attack ,with pigeons used to send messages and new Assassins are training and parading it's just a super game

Some things that really bugged me about ac2. The fact you'd get notoriety for doing high profile kills even when bo one saw you do it. I didn't like how rigid the assassinations set pieces felt and that I couldn't get in and get out without going full high profile. The thing that really put me off was the busy work side stuff. I really couldn't care less about it. But being the ocd completionist that I am, I couldn't ignore it. I ended up platinuming the game on ps3 and was very much over the series by the end. I think I got halfway through brotherhood and called it quits.
AC1, on the other hand, felt very focused. I100%ed it several times before ac2 came out. The repetitive nature of it is an issue but it's a lot easier to get done quickly in the first game. The assassination set pieces are a bit too rigid imo, but I've been able to figure out ways to handle all of them very cleanly. Also, you can rescue most of the citizens in each city by getting on the rooves and targeting from there. Keeps the streets from getting too crazy and keeps from attracting negative attention from guards.
In fact, one of my favorite things about the 1st game is I've been able to do most of it without causing disturbances on the ground outside of a couple citizen rescues that just reset after you kill the guards on the rooftops and a few of the assassinations which force you to do things out in the open. In ac2 I remember _having_ to do way too much killing out in the open.

Had to play the first idk 10 missions for 8 times lmao) and then AC Brotherhood. After a bit of a break I finally played AC1 and I realized how much better AC2 is in comparison. It's not as repetitive, it feels much more personal, better combat system, the parcour is smoother, all in all the better game. I did enjoy AC1, but Ubisoft really did a good job with improving their second AC game back then.
