By pure coincidence, tonight my first glass was Evan Williams bottled in bond, and my second is Wild Turkey 101. While the Turkey is more complex, the Evan Williams is holding up pretty well in comparison. And here in the States (Albuquerque, NM) the Evan Williams is markedly cheaper - $19.99 as opposed to $25.99 for the Wild Turkey. 🙂
I find EW to be a very mild bourbon, not harsh on the palate like some can be. I feel it makes a good intro bourbon for those who have never tried bourbon before. WT-101 is what my father used for his "gold remedy." He'd pour a few fingers of it and slam it down. I don't know if it helped his cold, but he sure seemed to feel better.
Howdy Jon! I 've just had two pours to compare, as EW BIB got given to me on my birthday) And frankly at first I didn't quite like it and the profile (way too harsh, too much oak, lackin' in complexity, kinda bitter, way too overtanned like strong brewed black ceylon tea at its maximum) But the next day when i got home being frozen to the bone, it gave me a nice good warming up))) But yet, I'd put W.T. 101 high above B.I.B. and not 'coz' it was my first "bourbon love" but because of its comlexity as compared to E.W. and easyness to drink neat (i'm "a straight - neat drink' guy) But in either way t'was interesting to be watching you comparing them both!) Keep up reviews, best regards from Moscow, Russia, Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your journey eith EW do far. I bet it helped with warming up! EW has many fans out there, and I thought it was OK. Still, not a favorite for me and I have not had another in a long while. Thanks for dropping in and sipping with me, cheers!
In general, I agree with everything this video stated about Evan Williams bottled in bond compared to Wild Turkey. Even the Wild Turkey 81 has more of a peppery taste while the Evan Williams is milder both bottled in bond and the black label. I don't necessarily prefer one over the other based on cocktails or mixing, but neat pours is just based on whether a friend prefers which brand they are used to. Both Evan Williams and Wild Turkey brands are safe choices that I don't have a problem buying and restocking and they are standards I compare to other whiskeys as a whole. Thanks for the video. Why do people regard the Evan Williams bottled in bond higher is that on occasion under blind tasting, the bottle does get ranked higher than expected, because there's not much that is inoffensive to most people but dramatic flavor profiles on some rival whiskeys do turn off people such as lack of a finish, over oaked, too peaty flavor, too sweet, metallic taste, etc. If a whiskey is down the line not overbearing in any one flavor direction, the bottle has a chance to out compete youthful and more 'experimental' varieties of whiskey.
It depends on personal preferences. I don't particularly like the taste of Wild Turkey. Wild Turkey 101 is a good quality product but it is not good for me. Sorry.
As I live in the UK I love this channel. Most of the things available to you are also available in England . I love bourbon but all the American channels review bourbon unavailable to me so I can only imagine how good the whiskey is . Scotch is easily available but I prefer bourbon 🥃 . Keep up the good reviews neighbour 😀
Thanks for encouragement, and I'm glad we can try some of the same releases. I see lots of cool expressions in the US I can't find either, but so far I have been fortunate finding good things up here. Cheers!
Nice video Jon. These are the 2 that I always buy in 1.75 liter bottles. Both great to kick off the night before I move to the higher proof bourbons. I lean a little bit to the WT 101 as well but really like both. Cheers!
I also prefer the Wild Turkey 101 but Evan Williams BiB is super cheap in Texas. I can get a 1.75L of EW BiB for $22 compared to $38 for WT101. For a fifth it's more like $12 versus $19. Guess I'll just have to keep buying both.
Greetings, Neighbor Jon! I've noticed quite a difference in batches with the EW BIB. Makes sense, being that it has to be from a single season. Definitely worth checking in on from year to year.....
Yes, these days it can't be more than 4 years old. 20 years ago this was as good as anything on the shelf. The down side of the BOOM for us old people. Turkey is still great...better value today.
The EW BiB disappeared in Ontario some time ago, have 1 in the bar but don't think about it. There is a WT 101 in the bar always and open, my favorite available daily sipping Bourbon.
Happy Saturday, Whisky Neighbor. Two enjoyable bourbons, but I have to agree with you on finding WT101 better as it is just more complex than EW BiB. I always have a 1.75L of WT101 on hand but I haven't gone back to EW BiB since finishing a handle last year. Enjoy your weekend!
@@WhiskyNeighbour Thanks Jon. Trip was great but hunting whiskey was a dud. Weller doesn't grow on trees in the wild of west Texas! Lol. However I did pick up an ECBP A121 near home earlier in the week. To more good whisky! Cheers!
Good video and I found some of the same observations. I found some of the comments interesting too. I usually prefer Irish or Scotch Whiskeys, and find the EW white label pretty decent, good sweet flavor, mild and not too much oak. The Wild Turkey was not for me, it has that typical wild turkey flavor, I am simply just not a fan. The EW isn’t as good as some more expensive brands, but I really enjoy it for what it is. That is one that will stay on my wet bar.
Another affordable bourbon that I can get in western Canada is Jim Beam bonded. Around the same price as these two bottles and I enjoy it, but might be a bit sweet for you.
When it comes to EW BiB, I just bought my first bottle today, and I must say that the reasoning was three fold... #1: There wasn't any OGD BiB, #2: the fact that it was a BiB (which is my mainstay when it comes to bourbon) and of course #3: the affordable price for a bourbon used for mixing... But neat... it leaves me flat and searching for something to hold on to. WT 101 on the other hand has been one of my go to bourbons for the better part of 50 years now... and while I am a BIG fan of WT 101... OGD BiB is my #1 choice for a quality bourbon priced for mixing.
Surprised to hear the WT is cheaper than EW in your area. Goes to show it’s where you live that matters. EW is cheaper here in WA by about $5-$6. And about $10-$15 cheaper for the 1.75L.
Everyone has been raving about the Evan Williams BIB, and its good, but I think for a few more dollars the Old Tub unfiltered bottled in bond from Jim Beam is such a better bourbon
I enjoy EW BiB, but it gets more love out there in general than I would agree with. Good bourbon, but many I prefer just as much or even a bit more for a similar price. Old Tub brought out some strong Jim Beam peanut for me, but I enjoy that, so can happly enjoy that release. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Cheers!
Bro evan Williams bottled in bond is $13.99 here and WT 101 is $24.99 this is hands down to evan Williams bottled in bond idk where the heck you can buy WT 101 for less than EW BiB.

@@WhiskyNeighbour Still a great video! I've said it before and I'll say it again - WT 101 is my personal go to bourbon. Just such an incredible value. I haven't had the Evan Williams BIB to compare, but I find the WT just has great depth of flavor.

If you want to drink something really complex stop wasting your money on bourbon. Start exploring cognac. One simply can't distill enough complexity out of corn mash.
Well, I would only be able to disagree from the whiskey side. I've had some rather complex expressions over the year. That said, I have had very, very little congnac. Where should I start if I wanted to?
