- Episode 185. Knob Creek and Wild Turkey 101 are affordable and tasty Bourbons in my opinion. I would gladly purchase and bring to a celebration, or just splash over ice to relax on a hot summer day. Have you tried both? Do you have a preference? Cheers to a safe and happy 4th of July Celebration! #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour
Love the Knob Creek. Still have a few of the old 9yrs left. That bottle you have is the one where they just removed the 9 so a lot of people didn't notice thill they had it at home for a while. Have a great weekend Jon
I wish I had a few 9 years stored away. I heard they might be bringing it back. Which would be great. I enjoy the KC profile a fair amount.
I would grab the turkey over the creek any day... it's just one of those quig things.
Fair!
You are dead on with the 2 bourbons different flavours! I have both of these in my bar as a staple, the 101 does have a bit more of a bite to it which is what I like about it. You can't beat the prices here in Edmonton on both. Thanks Jon, Cheers my friend!
They are both great and I'm thankful for their differences. I agree, prices are fantastic around here, an excellent place to live and be on this whisky journey. I hope you had a great weekend!
Just hanging around drinking a couple of kick but bourbon, these two keep the rest honest, in fact I think they humble some of the expensive stuff.
Completely agree!! Cheers!
Happy 4th! Great review. Cool news about the Knob Creek...they’ve brought back the nine years ago statement! Keep an eye out for that soon. I’m just starting to see them pop up around Philadelphia.
That is great news!! I clearly still enjoy their NAS, but I will certainly pick up the 9yr when it shows up! Thanks for sharing.
Two of my favorite brands. Love the 101 (and Rare Breed and Russell's Reserve single barrel). Love Knob Creek (have the new 9 yr. small batch, unopened, Single Barrel store pick (really good), and the 12 yr. small batch, unopened. The other 100 proofers that I like are Early Times BiB, and OF Signature. Hard for me to pick a favorite among these four.
Tough with good Bourbon like that!
I wonder if the spice comes from the yeast stain they use for Wild Turkey, I love that peppery finish!
Interesting. Could be, I would not know what yeast they use, but I certainly get a spiceir dram from WT 101 then KC.
Happy 4th from NYC, to you north of the border. Great comparison, thanks for the review
Thanks. I hope you had a great weekend!
101 is pretty inexpensive in my area. Maybe I shouldn't mention mixing, but it's my favorite in an Old Fashioned. I definitely get more rye and oak on 101, and I think I get that sour note you're talking about.
WT makes a fantastic Old Fashioned. A summer favourite for me.
Love both...that is all...lol cheers
Well, I enjoy them alot too!
I have tried them both and I liked them both very nice
A couple of great pours. I don't think anyone could go wrong with either.
Knob Creeki in the winter, Turkey in the summer
Ok, I can work with that!
👍👍
Nice review again Jon 👍👍👍 Just getting into bourbon - have bottles of 101, Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve - and I have to say I like them all! For me, the 101 and BT are as good as one another for different reasons, with the WR not far behind. The Knob Creek was on my list so looks like I'll have to get some.🥃🥃
Awesome! I enjoy BT as well, a little creamy and sweet compared to WT 101 for me. I hope you like KC if you pick it up!
Whisky Neighbour Do you ever add a few drops of water to your higher proof bourbons?
Is that Knob Creek an old bottle? I've not seen their small batch stuff without the 9 year on it. I guess I skipped a few years and when I got back to it in the last 6 months it had the 9 year statement on it. 100 proof. 101 is good but I've not had it enough neat to compare it... I do love it in a cocktail or a mix.. I am a WT fan but do like the 9 year knob creek. Funny though I am not a huge fan of Jim Beam... it as a named product is honestly my least favorite bourbon but they have some good brands besides the namesake... unfortunately both are in the $50-65 range these days with a few random sales.... right now i can find knob creek for 39 and 101 for 40... What is interesting is after I had some Rare Breed, when I went back to the 9 year Knob Creek, I loved it so much more. Either way both are good products but I'd say 101 makes for a better cocktail or mix but knob creek is better straight.
Thanks for sharing your experience here and what is availalbe in your area. I continue to enjoy both and certainly agree 101 can kick up a cocktail! Cheers!
I think I would prefer the wt101 but would have to do them blind to be sure. Cheers!
WT certainly has excellent spice ! Thanks for dropping in.
Hi thanks for your reviews. Your intro fiddle music is a bit loud for me.
Thanks for dropping in. I'll look at the volume, maybe I have it higher than my voice track. Cheers!
Great comparison. I always seem to lean towards the WT101 even though I enjoy KC too. Cheers
Thanks. I was thinking that while shooting. Not specifically about you, but that most comments I've seen seem to put WT fairly high on everyone's "Great, affordable" list! I certainly enjoy them both!
So, this is what Ned Flanders would look like if he made whiskey reviews. Just kidding my Canadian friend. Keep up the good work.
Lol! That is fun, and no apologies necessary. Thanks for dropping in
Both are great! The 9 year statement is back here in the U.S.
That is great news. I hope it makes it my way too!
@@WhiskyNeighbour eventually... it really depends on the store down here. Where I live Costco has the new 9-year age statement Knob Creek in stock, but most other stores still have the non-age statement stuff on the shelves. I wish I could send it to you! I think it really is richer and deeper than the non-age statement. I had a semi-blind tasting, because I did not notice the age statement when I bought it, tried it, and said wait, this is better than the last bottle! Then I checked the label...
9 year statement is back also in Canada!
Happy 4th of July from Germany!
Thanks Jason. I hope you had a fantastic weekend too and your summer looks good and full of excellent whisky!
Usually both are in the bar, WT 101 is always there.
I have recently "come back" to WT 101. I always liked it, but that sour note kept me from loving it. Oddly I do not get it in Rare Breed. Now, I enjoy the whole experience.
Great review! It’s interesting the mash-bills are the same. I’m not a Knob Creek fan. But I love WT 101. It has to be the barrel char I’m thinking. The 101 makes a great old fashioned and a whiskey sour. Cheers 🥃
Thanks for dropping in! I completely agree. Especially a good Whiskey sour. That is why I think I thought of it as a description . WT 101 is good bourbon! Cheers!
Hey! Great Review!
Ps the Wild Turkey 101 states 6-8 Years on the back-Lable. Cheers
Thanks. I caught that in edit. Not sure where I pulled 12 years from !! Cheers
Nice one Jon. Couple of classics there. Cheers.
Indeed. Especially the WT 101. Lots of love for that classic bottle.
Good review, both are good. As for Knob Creek the best value is to find someone who has a similar taste to you and does barrel picks of the Knob. Cheers! 🥃
- Patrick
No doubt! I also enjoy their regular single barrels. Tasty!
@@WhiskyNeighbour yeah with store picks you really need to find someone/group of people who's taste in picks you agree with.
I've had them both but never side by side. Great comparison video my friend.
Thanks. I had not done them head to head before either. It was fun!
My favorite bourbon is 1920...but really all you need is 101 or Knob Creek
Fair, but 1920 is excellent!
Wow! This is a tough call! Love Knob Creek, but can't take anything away from Wild Turkey! Let's just get both and spend under $50. Cheer's
Agreed!! Both it is :)
I too, like Bourbon on ice. The Wild Turkey Rare Breed is a great bottle.
Thanks for dropping in! Enjoy the weekend!
Thanks! Just got the Knob Creek so I appreciate the review!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. A little strong on the first sip, but it settles in nicely IMO. Happy Summer!
Great review 👏
Thanks!
Two superstars. Currently the Knob is 5 to the 10
Dollars more in US dollars. Otherwise they are a tie. Both awesome
Agree, both excellent Bourbon!
If they were in fact the same exact price, I’d have to agree that the Creek wins by a hair.
101 does have that sour in the after notes. It's s an acquired taste. I like both those products. I prefer 101 but I am BEAM Santori fan.OGD 114 and BIB
I have come to really enjoy the sour! But OGD is almost on the shelf
@Whisky Neighbour Yes, thank you for replying. OGD BIB in my area is just starting to become scarce. I think it is becoming popular with the older crowd. Bourbon Junkies say bad things about it but I feel OGD makes a superior old fashioned.
I like em both and I agree, Knob by just a hair, I describe it this way, WT is kind of two notes dimension, and Knob has that third note element. The WT tends to be a tad spicie/hot, and its color is lighter due to less age time I believe (not as much wood essence imparted on the white dog)
Great description. I may agree, but sometimes WT punches just right!
Oh for sure, I am partial to WT cuz I love Jimmy Russel's personality and like you said the Bird hits just right, but lets enjoy em both like a blonde and redhead:)@@WhiskyNeighbour
Both are awesome! Thanks.
Glad you enjoy them too!
Thank you from Quebec. Still trying to figure out which one i prefer. Good evening neighbour!
Have you tried the new KC 9 year? Sadly I do not have a small batch now to compare it too, but I enjoy it more then the SB. So the comparison is even harder!
@@WhiskyNeighbour I do have a new KC 9 year with me right now. It's nice, thick and herbal, but to me BT at 40 Can$ is a better deal than KC at 47$ at this moment. I know it's hard to knock expensive whisky (SB, double rye, etc.) but I prefer the standard KC.
@@juvallee Markets are so different. KC9 sits at 37 and in the past month has been on sale for 32. That said, I love WT101 which is less yet! Nothing wrong with BT. Classic bourbon.
@@WhiskyNeighbour I'm an economist and I still have to figure out the real provincial tax structure. Feel free to drop a link.
I just picked up WT101 and tried it for the first time and I am "gobbling" it.......Happy Thanksgiving (belated)....LOL.
LOL! I almost did a review of a WT release, this last weekend. Then thought that should wait for American Thanksgiving. WT101 is a great Bourbon that always delights. Cheers!
Another great review of 2 fantastic whiskeys. You really can't go wrong with either one. Although...
I rather wild Turkey over knob creek. 101 is my daily sipper, rare breed is my favorite tho. ( well actually old forester 1920 is but I only saw it once in Ontario so not applicable )
Another great cost effective whiskey I have on hand is Te Bheag scotch .
Cheers.
You are the 3rd person to recommend Te Bheag in the last month. I think it is a sign!
I finally found some 101 it cost me the same as Rare Breed, both were on sale for $39 so I have both but was starting to get a little low on both. 101 seems to lack something that the Rare Breed has and the Rare Breed loses something if I dilute it with a little water so I figured why not try mixing both 50/50 and I am pleasantly surprised... it's smoother, less bite and yet retains more flavor... I really quite like it. I think I'll have to pick up a few more bottles while still reasonably priced... I wonder how Rare Breed would mix with the generally much cheaper 81...
Good to know a mix has so much flavor!
Wild Turkey 101..... So good ! - Everyday, weekly.
Then, comes the fatty juicy Wild Turkey Rare Breed for Christmas !. Cheers.
Drinking Bearface Canadian whisky right now, and don't like it. For the same price range, will stick to these bourbons instead, and or Lot 40 !.
WT 101 is so versatile. I enjoy it straight, with ice, in cocktails ... and it's priced right! Too bad about Bearface. It is very heavily wine influenced. After some time, I enjoyed it. Especially when I was in a wine/sherry mood. That said, I can agree Lot 40 is way better! Cheers!
Great comparison! Wild Turkey 101 is among the best bang for buck whiskeys I've tried so far (and the rye punch seems way more than 13%, doesn't it?). I've yet to try Knob Creek but it's next on my shopping list. Everybody loves it. Oh, and the lastest release has returned the 9-year-old age statement. Cheers!
WT definitely has more spice than the 13% rye. Must be in another part of their process. I like good spice in my Bourbon! I hope you enjoy KC as much as I do when you get the chance. Cheers!
Very good and interesting comparison Jon, I have only had Wild Turkey 101 up to this point but do have a Knob Creek in my stash and look forward to opening it. I agree with your assessment of the 101 with the sourness and spicing. I have been adding it to the Centennial 10 year Rye which I find bland but it improves substantially with a little 101 added. please keep up the good comparisons.
Interesting! That would be a great addition. I too find the Centennial a little bland or sweet. Wt 101 would help brighten it up! Cheers!
Never could appreciate anything by Jim Beam but the WT 101 is phenomenal.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Never had a knob creek yet... But i love wild turkey 101. It has to be the best deal at the lcbo for any whisky 37 buck taxes included for 50% abv and a great flavor
Can't argue with that price and I do love the flavour too! Enjoy the weekend!
I got both those on my shelf right now, both great bourbons, though I like the Wild Turkey better. Think I'll have me a glass. Cheers!
WT certainly has great spice and finish. Cheers!!
Great comparion, gotta try both of these side by side myself!
Let me know what you find!
I live in Wyoming and I love Knob Creek point made! Lol
Lol! Cheers to fine Bourbon.
My two favorite bourbons at any price point.
Certainly enjoy both!
Hi, Jon! Totally agree with your review. Actually WT is one of the fairest products in the world, it should has a monument for honesty and quality.
I agree! It continues to deliver an exceptional dram for a great price.
@@WhiskyNeighbour Probably I mistaken but I never heard your thoughts about Woodford. How is it in general for you? And how it compares with Knob Creek?
@@artemrepin1746 I enjoy Woodford. I find it has a little more oak, less spice, but can be a good, relaxed dram. I prefer KC, but Woodford seems to get better as you drink it!
@@WhiskyNeighbour Thanks for the response. As usual I prefer more spicy profile, seldom times I go to buffalo regular etc
What do you think about the Wild Turkey 81 proof ? 101 seems very difficult to get in Québec
The 101 really does bring up the flavour. 81 is OK, but I would pay more to bring home the 101. Perhaps it will come back into stock soon for you!
@@WhiskyNeighbour Yeah maybe some day. Right now, the nearest SAQ to store it is located in.. Iles-de-la-Madeleine..! 900 km away. LCBO in Ontario would be closer for me to get it :D
@@WhiskyNeighbour I just checked and Wild Turkey 101 is now available in Québec!! I have to get my hands on it soon!!
@@drax14QC Awesome! A great dram and usually not so hard to get. I hope you enjoy it if you can get it.
@@WhiskyNeighbour yeah, and at a good price too!
What I like about both of these bourbons is they are almost always easy to find on the liquor store shelf. You don't have to hunt them down, and they are very affordable.
Yes! These are always there, and are enjoyable.
I enjoy both, but WT 101 has been my go to bourbon for nearly 30 years. Neither WT 101 or Knb Creek have ever let me down.. Both are solid.
Agreed. Good bourbon.
