Such laws may have been initiated by Muslims, but they are not part of the religion. The Qur'an mandates different mechanisms for everyone's welfare during divorce. In the US, child support allocations and property divisions during divorce are totally different than what the Qur'an describes. In many cases, divorce ends up in financial ruin and is not for the welfare of anyone.

if you divorce your wife, they don't get anything from you except the mahr you gave them (unless she initiates it).
