  • This weeks camp took me to a north Idaho trail in the country in order to camp in 1930's style Great Depression winter snow camp. I had only vintage wool gear and clothing and a canvas sack to haul my supplies. This was a test which resulted in needing better gear. Overall it was a very fun camp which taught me a lot!. #camping #1930's #greatdepression #wintercamping

Eagle scout here! You may have been cold for a multitude of reasons. Number one, its always a good idea to make sure you're sleeping in completely dry clothes. If you sweat in your clothes on the hike in, you'll want to change before bed. Second, you should absolutely have two 100% wool blankets for winter camping. I use safety pins to hold them together as a sleeping bag. A tarp to sleep under will help with rain and snow. For a mattress, people traditionally had what's called a browse bed or tick bed, which was essentially a bed sheet folded and sewn to form a large bag and stuffed with debris from the forest floor. In snowy conditions like this, you might be well served just making a cot when you get to camp. Any way you can trap air between yourself and the environment will help keep you warmer longer. Alcohol is known to increase blood-flow. This can be making you colder faster. I'm not saying you shouldn't drink but it's worth noting. Also, never breath into your sleeping bag. It sucks trust me.

Oilskin tarp and or another wool blanket should help alot. Ive seen 1700s reenactment videos on how the soldiers were able to use the tarpa to catch the heat from the fire down to low temps along with 2 wool blankets are always better than one wool blanket since it traps air an such. While not 1900s era and pretty expensive, I carry two of the twin size Merino wool blankets at Bushcraft Spain and they are a literal godsend and are by far the loftiest wool blanket ive seen. I would highly reccomend if anybody wanted a high quailty wool blanket. I personally like to fold up one of the blankets into basically a sleep pad along with two of the wool ponchos also folded, then throw over myself a lightweight alpaca throw along with the last woolie and with a fire im in heaven. It def aint lightweight though😅

The real missing element here was the wrong type of fire. That's a twigs cooking fire. He needed a 6ft long log fire lay to get through a winter night in just wool.
A canvas tarp/poncho over the wool as well to trap heat and cut out wind convection since he didn't build a shelter.
This was doomed from the get go but good on him getting out to experiment. I need to do my own winter outing in wool video showing a proper long fire but there's already a good few others out there on that.

Wools fire retardant, but you really shouldn't be sleeping with your head so close to the fire.
