  • Now this is a great package from a Aussie sub who sent me 1.3kgs of silver shot. I just love the way silver freezes as it leaves awesome layered lines. On top of the silver I also pour myself easily the ugliest copper bars I have ever seen, Nothing to look at but always a welcome addition to the stack. Another week closer to the new place but I can tell you right now I'm not looking forward to the stack move. Anyway as usual enjoy the vid and Ill see you all on next Fridays sewage pump panel melt ***

HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

Welcome back to another Friday video where today I had a very generous donation from an Aussie subscriber and I melt down the 1.3 kg of silver he donated as well as a few kilos of copper. These would definitely be the ugliest copper bars I have ever poured and seen but they're still welcome with open arms into the stack. I didn't worry about cleaning up the silver pieces as in my new place I'll set up the new kiln and start learning the lost wax/pla casting for more intricate pieces. Let's see how I go. Now sit back relax take it easy , I hope you enjoy today's video and as always have an awesome weekend and see you all next Friday for my sewage pump panel meltdown👌🏻😁

How many times have regular viewers seen "cardboard under crucible stops firebrick sticking", yet he still titles it in. If you do silver again, you should keep a torch blowing inside the mold to keep the silver melted until you finish the pour. Your ingots will come out more solid and the crystalization of the silver will be even more beautiful.
Love the videos and have for over a year, bigstackD! Thanks for the amazing and relaxing content as always. ❤️🙏 And yes, the vicious guard dogs are adorable as well. 🥰
edit: Now that I've looked at the copper part of the video, and I love the longer video formats you are doing now, the red copper ingot is because it was the last pour with the most impurities that were floating atop the molten metal, it could have also retained a small amount of oxygen due to the impurities present. That red color should hopefully be superficial though.
Also, heating your mold during the pour would keep those air bubbles from getting in and provide a better pour like I mentioned before. And a good way to clean copper is just let it soak in a solution of white vinegar and salt for about 30 minutes and only "scrub" any holes or divots with a toothbrush instead of a power tool. You'll have a much more beautiful finish when done.
Hope you give my comment a little look! Extremely big fan here! Drink one for me during your next melt! 🍻

And you can very quickly tell thats reall silver too once he cast it, silver has a very specific sound when you drop it or clink it against itself, its as you can hear a higher pitch then most metals, this is why silver is so popular for makeing bells as well the sound silver bells of all sizes make is quite beutifull

another great video. I agree silver freeze lines do look amazing. Although todays copper freeze looked pretty darn cool .. Nice Camera work there.
I love when the hot metal cooling off changes color
The puppies are wonderful as always. nice to see BigSnackD come out to play.
It is pretty neat to see the piles of stuff you have collected over the years.
Can't wait to see the transformation and transition into the new place.
And to see the new toys get set up.

You are my go-to channel, along with Kurtis at Cutting Edge Engineering. You both have some of the best content on RUclips. Thanks for bringing us the best stuff, mate. Much love from South Texas, and stay safe!😬🤷🏻‍♂️
Edit: I can't believe Bullion and Ingot weren't impressed with the silver melt.

There's something I've always been curious about - if you fill a mold and then place a sheet of similar metal as the mold on top before it hardens (like if you're capping the mold I guess) when it cools would it be perfectly flat or would it still have the sink?? I'm really curious about that huge kiln thing you have there - can't wait to see how you use it.

    • @andymanaus1077
      @andymanaus1077 Год назад +27

Almost all materials shrink when they freeze, including metals. (The most common exception is water, which expands). Even castings done in fully enclosed molds will shrink. Putting a "cap" on the mold won't stop the metal from shrinking. The most common solution for this issue is to create "risers" which are open shafts extending upwards from the mold. If done correctly, excess molten metal flows up into the risers during the pour, then, as the casting cools, the excess metal in the risers moves down to fill the gaps left by shrinkage. The metal left in the risers are cut off the finished casting.
