So great that manufacturers such as TTartisans are allowing people to experiment with these focal lengths and apertures that otherwise would never have the opportunity
Awesome lens. I’ve been thinking about purchasing this. One thing you mentioned is that it needs an adapter to fit the gfx. Well to my knowledge TTArtisan makes this lens for the GFX mount, so this would eliminate any dark edges while still using the full sensor
Hey Benj, just wanna say I really enjoy your videos and your equipment reviews. I just purchased my first Leica after years of lusting after them. I got a M240 to start me down my M journey. Thanks to your videos I ordered the TTartisans 50 1.4 and i think this 90 1.25 will be my next purchase. Thanks for the amazing content and reviews.
Thank you for this review, Ben. I like your videos. I am a big fan of some of the TTartisan and 7Artisans lenses. I own a M8 and M240, the 75mm f/1.25 7Artisans renders amazingly on the M240, save for some sharpness on apertures larger than f/2.0, but I don't mind it honestly. I am so glad to see a good review on this TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25. One thing I did notice is the busy background which doesn't render well on people and busy foliage, for example at 12:17 the lady with blonde hair, her left eye looks like it has ghosting/double eyes. I don't do weddings, but I do a lot of portraits and street photography, I am still going to order this lens and test it out for my purposes.
Watched this again and some thoughts started to surface.. it's super impressive that these Chinese companies are releasing lenses like this at such price points. It makes me wonder though how their lineup will progress. It kind of seems right now they're hunting for 'fastest and cheapest Leica-look' lens offerings, with varying results (like you mentioned, the 75 vs. the 90). Will they start differentiating between classic look lenses, modern look lenses, fast big lenses, small compact lenses, premium vs. budget (although, where do you go from a lens like this, which can compete with premium lenses already at such a low price?).. with lens naming schemes to make it easier for customers to know what they're getting? (similar to Voigtlander and Leica). I have a feeling we may be approaching a point where these lenses might get more expensive, to make space for cheaper/slower lens options. This might be the perfect time to pick up a lens like this before they start to get marketing/product managers involved.
Thank you for this interesting, well done video. I was very happy to see you discussing adapting this lens to the GFX. As a note, one downside of using the 35mm mode on the GFX is that it will bake that format into your raw file -- i.e., you can't recrop out of that in post. As a result, I now stick with the full medium format resolution even when shooting with 35mm format lens that vignette knowing that I can address the vignetting through cropping (and to some extent the vignetting tool) in post and will usually end up with a larger than 35mm format image size.
I can't thank you enough for sharing your opinion and results with the GFX system. I'm planning to try it on X system (because I'm not that lucky to have some GFX camera... for now), and I think it will be a very good pick, too ! Very much appreciated, and very much impressed by the quality of the moments you capture at these weddings : you're great at what you do !
Benj - thanks for this. Considering the lens for my GFX. (and hoping to enter the M system sometime soon and will need lenses - I like longer lengths!) Can you reference the adapter for that purpose? Thanks so much!
I have a question: I’m about to buy this lens today. I know it’s manual focus, I know the build quality because of your video. How does the image quality compare to the Nikon Z85mm f1.2 autofocus lens?
Love love these images, great review….assume you are looking through the rangefinder ….the focus is spot on, how DO you do it so fast…wow….thanks as always, love the time and work into sharing
Yeah just did my first shoot on it. Exceptional resolution. 6K RAW looked phenomenal. Excellent transmission. My only fault would be I simply hate any bokeh that is not completely smooth and round. I mean, why can't we just get that every time. The aperture blades are numerous but still give a mathematical design when stopped down.
Thanks for the great content! When researching these lenses ive noticed that 7artisan and ttartisan are different companies and the lenses are not completely the same. Is this the ttartisan version or the 7artisan? Youve mentioned both during the video 😆 thanks mate🙏
Thank you for this review. As always, very thorough. Very informative. Very inspiring. But before I run out and this my kit may I ask you - have you reviewed/used the Leica APO 90 f2? How might it compare image wise? And while much more expensive, is it still the better option? Thank you,
Actually you can calibrate it quite easily on a analog M too; take some baking oven paper and put it on the film holder. This way you get like a ground glass and with a loupe you can calibrate it this way. Did it on my M6 and my 7A 50mm f1.1 is now super well calibrated.
Great review, always appreciate your insights.. Maybe this is dumb question but how much of your rangefinder view is obstructed with this lens? Tried the Zeiss 35 f1.4 Distagon on the M10 and found the obstruction annoying.
You have to distinguish optical image circle and mount vignetting that is often a smaller circle than the first one. In this case the noticed strong vignetting comes from the little leica mount used for medium format. This same lens has no vignetting in native hasselblad medium format X mount on my medium format Hasselblad cameras with the same optical image cercle.
Hi Benj, maybe I have missed it on your channel, but because I own 85mm f1.2 for many years and I am starting to think about selling it I wonder... Did you tried it on gfx? And if yes - how does it perform? Cheers!
your images are stellar. The weight a significant obstacle. My opinion. What I don't like you never showed how much of viewfinder is gone1 The 90mm old Summicron was my dream. Till I was offered one and looked thru! I walked. 85mm f1.9. That's the lens! I do love Leica M analogue but longer lenses suck. SLR or DSLR.
Question 1, do you use the rangefinder or the viewfinder when you use it, and Question 2, why do you tape over the Leica logo on your camera? Great stuff, and since I’m just south of Portland & you are in the PNW too, hopefully you’re not going to stir-crazy with all the rain this month!
@@benjhaisch I figured you were doing rangefinder just for the quickness you need, but can imagine that lens blocks quite a bit of the RF window! I do know from my old video days we had to turn off the tally light most of the time because people would freeze if they saw a blinking red “recording” light.
They released this lens with Canon RF mount, so now I'm thinking about it and the EF 100mm f/2, which is ~80 USD cheaper where I live. I don't have a lens with this focal legth, and the 85mm alternatives aren't really appealing for me.
I saw your video months ago of the TT artisans 50mm 1.4, I bought it after. After watching your review of the 50mm Lanthar APO i sold the TT artisans and got that one. Watched your review about the voightlander 28mm Classic v2, I bought it. I just placed an order for this one. My wife hates you, Benj.
Idk if this is a dumb question…. But if I wanted to use a TTArtisans lens on my leica film body…. Can I use my m to e mount adapter and calibrate it with my Sony digital?
This may be a stupid question but I wanted to see if anyone had a clear answer to this, I was planning on buying this exact lens and using a Leica M-Canon RF mount adapter for my Canon R, but I now see that TTartisan actually sells this model in a Canon RF mount. My question is, does the mount difference affect quality at all? Essentially asking if I should still buy the M mount or just go for the native RF mount. My mind is telling me the mount should have no difference on image quality, but since the model in question in this video is made for Leica, I just wanted to be clear. Any one out there have some insight?
It’s labeled in the title and the description as well as saying the name specifically in the intro, but yes, I slipped up and called it the wrong thing at one point. It’s all so confusing to have such similar companies with such similar names.
Would you say that you’re comfortable or that it’s worth it to sell your Leica 90 for this one? Or do you think the older Leica version still has a place? I’d also love to hear your opinion on adapting some of these M-Mount lenses to an SL2/2-S whenever you have it in!
@@benjhaisch Sweet, you have me sold! I'll be sure to use your link to pick one up here soon. Being limited to f/2 on my current one (I have an 80's version as well) just isn't ideal in a lot of situations. Especially now that the days are shorter.
I compared the two here: ruclips.net/video/-jpg6I3ML0E/видео.html that being said, it depends on your use case. The 50SII is a little faster and the IBIS is a great addition. Having the ability to charge via USB-C is something that I didn't even think about until after and would be another selling point for me.
It's a brick, but man... for $225 used... soooo good. The Leica equivalent is like $13,000 -- my wife would divorce me. But yeah at $225, it's a no brainer. I don't do portraits often, but man -- so good.
Agree Benj, it does look "legitimately comical". Other adjectives might be preposterous, absurd, unwieldy, and wholly impractical. It's as ungainly as the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM(onster) on a mirrorless body. If TT Artisans made it with an L-mount, it might actually balance and be usable on the Leica SL2 with its awesome EVF and IBIS. TT Artisans has brought to market other lenses that are the antithesis of stealth shooting and portability...key reasons why people use the Leica M system. I. Just. Don't. Get. It.
Yeah, I think the closest comp is the Leica 90/1.5 Summilux though and these two lenses actually look like they are similar in size and have the same weight. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@benjhaisch I should add that your wedding images with it are stunning, but I don't credit the lens for that. You have an amazing eye. TT Artisans came out with an L-mount of their 50mm f/1.4 using the same optical formula as their M-mount. It is substantially smaller and less expensive (no RF focus components).
Do you actually have a viewfinder window left after slapping this giant on?! :P Voigtläender is about to launch their 90mm APO f2.8, that is probably the more sensible investment :)
Are you meaning the 75/1.25 from 7Artisans? I actually have reviewed that lens as well, but this is the 90/1.25 from TTArtisan. It is confusing though.
@@benjhaisch yes, really sorry. In general, tt artisans seems to have more solid lens, what do you think? I'm living in China and both are even sold cheaper in here, so I have been quite attracted by affordability of this lenses
It's a bad idea adapting this Leica M mount lens on medium format with the strong vignetting that comes only from the Leica bayonet size. The same lens exists also in native medium format mounts with no vignetting. I use the Hasselblad X version of this lens with no noticeable vignetting even at full aperture.
FUJI GF 80/1.7 - is better and use AF ;-) Manual LENS is pain, work only on high ISO or light, when you use flash, then you need stand, change ISO, focus, get back and take photo ;-)) - i know it, it work very bad, only on natutal light it is relative OK. What happened with original lens? - i use real view, GFX automatically temporary switch ISO, focus and you can shoot from hand. Byu manual focis is only 2 scenario: 1) not exist similar lens 2) Price For example, i sell shift (work perfectly on GFX) MIR 35/2.8 (funny lens), Schneider 28/2.8 - both good, but too much pain - i replace it with 20-35/4 What i like 35/1.4 (i wait for similar lens from fuji) and 135/1.8 (both sigma art with AF adapter) and old minolta 58/1.2 - funny and good lens, is cheap maybe i byu 135/2 or 2.8 (reason - weight compare to sigma art with AF adapter) - but only becuase is possible buy it about 60 euro
Looks a lot like a fat R Leica R lens on the outside, like the 80mm Summilux R, especially if you have that one adapted with a Metabones R to FE mount adapter for instance that uses the R styling. It really looks like a fake Leica lens from China that just doesn't have Leica anywere on It. Nothing really wrong with that, Leica lenses look good. On a GFX It would be more like an 85 because you lose corners. But if the corners are nothing complex, just using the clone stamp in PS would be very easy. Optically, they probably get beat by a ton of lenses, having the optical problems of 50 year old lenses. And some 50 year old lenses are even better. But options are good, and these Chinese brands are wasting no time. A cheap 90mm 1.25 is cool, It's a one trick pony. A lighter and better 90mm f2 or 2.8 being much more usefull, I find the Contax G 90mm f 2.8 sonnar already having to much bokeh wide open sometimes. A 100mm lens like the Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar f2 has even more shallow depth of field. And the Summilux 80mm 1.4, doesn't just supersmooth background, It melts them. f 1.25 would be cool in lowlight, but shooting a heavy lens hand held is very hard to shoot hand held, especcially with smaller body's like an Leica M, Bessa R, A7 or A7II. Probably easier to handle on a Panasonic or Leica SL, Canon R3 and the fat Nikon. Can't speak for a gripped Sony A1, not having one. I don't have any of the Chinese lenses. But Laowa seems to make lenses of much higher optical quality. The 35mm 0.95 seems like a very good lens. Except being very heavy and Voigtlander making their VM 35mm 1.2 III to 330gr or something making It passable for a walk around lens on the heavier side. Suriu also seems to make excellent tripods on par with Manfrotto, not Gitzo but the last one being extremely durable but also very expensive. I'm rooting more for those Chinese companies that make affordable but very high/good quality, then the one's giving cheap OK quality. And also rooting for Voigtlander and Zeiss, the first one releasing some insane lenses the new VM 50mm 1.0, VM 35 1.2 III, the APO's, also having most of their range available for FE mount. And Zeiss stil heaving some excellent M mount lenses and also Loxia, Batis, the Zeiss/Sony. For Fuji GFX, covering the sensor is not the same as giving good or stellar performance, the 100mm Zeiss Makro Planar f2, covers the sensor, on FF one of the best lenses but on the GFX It doesn't do It's magic. Why buy a GFX and put cheap bad Chinese lenses on It. I hope Zeiss or Voightlander also make some glass for It.
Hey thanks for the detailed comment! I mostly agree with a lot of your sentiment, I'd just say that the idea of putting on cheaper lenses on something like a GFX is more for the "look" than for performance. If you want performance, just buy the native Fujifilm G glass as it's fantastic.
Good lens on a big hybrid body but quite ridiculous and unadapted on a m10 or equivalent. The focus is impossible with the range finder at these large aperture. Far better on a Leica sl or Panasonic s1.
So great that manufacturers such as TTartisans are allowing people to experiment with these focal lengths and apertures that otherwise would never have the opportunity

TT Artisans came out with an L-mount of their 50mm f/1.4 using the same optical formula as their M-mount. It is substantially smaller and less expensive (no RF focus components).
Hello there 5D classic 😏
Do you actually have a viewfinder window left after slapping this giant on?! :P
Voigtläender is about to launch their 90mm APO f2.8, that is probably the more sensible investment :)
😂
Very cool to know. Thank you.
I did not quite get it: Is this lens good or bad?
both? It all depends on what you’re looking for out of it. It definitely found a place in my camera bag though.
Hi, 7 artisans and tt artisans are two different Chinese brands. So this model is 7artisans and not tt artisans like mentioned in the title?
Are you meaning the 75/1.25 from 7Artisans? I actually have reviewed that lens as well, but this is the 90/1.25 from TTArtisan. It is confusing though.
But no, the title is correct
@@benjhaisch yes, really sorry. In general, tt artisans seems to have more solid lens, what do you think? I'm living in China and both are even sold cheaper in here, so I have been quite attracted by affordability of this lenses
@@joaoribeirinha8215 it all depends on the lens. Some are amazing, some are so-so
@@benjhaisch I think the confusion was because you said 7 artisans 90 mm
FF to 7:41 for the 1st sample of aforementioned bokeh.
Dangit Benj, for that price how am I supposed to justify not buying that for my wedding kit...
Right??? Hahaha
I want to see this vs. Contax 85mm 1.4 cy on fuji mf.
All this description and you haven't listed the Need A Name track so please do.
are you talking about the music?
@@benjhaisch Yep, Need a Name - Everything Is Moving But Not The Sky
want it!!
That’s a good point, but then I’d have to buy the same lens twice…
7:10 THAT is one of the reasons that I do not like rangefinder cameras, there is no WYSIWYG !
FUJI GF 80/1.7 - is better and use AF ;-)
Manual LENS is pain, work only on high ISO or light, when you use flash, then you need stand, change ISO, focus, get back and take photo ;-)) - i know it, it work very bad, only on natutal light it is relative OK.
What happened with original lens? - i use real view, GFX automatically temporary switch ISO, focus and you can shoot from hand.
Byu manual focis is only 2 scenario: 1) not exist similar lens 2) Price
For example, i sell shift (work perfectly on GFX) MIR 35/2.8 (funny lens), Schneider 28/2.8 - both good, but too much pain - i replace it with 20-35/4
What i like 35/1.4 (i wait for similar lens from fuji) and 135/1.8 (both sigma art with AF adapter) and old minolta 58/1.2 - funny and good lens, is cheap maybe i byu 135/2 or 2.8 (reason - weight compare to sigma art with AF adapter) - but only becuase is possible buy it about 60 euro
Sure, the 80/1.7 is $2300 though
great ! new sub !
willl u buy it for me
legitimately ;)
Why using Leica in the first place ?
get a 1k lens a d put 9k into Tesla or Apple in your roth
No idea what a viziflex is 🤯
a hotshoe EVF :)
Looks a lot like a fat R Leica R lens on the outside, like the 80mm Summilux R,
especially if you have that one adapted with a Metabones R to FE mount adapter for instance that uses the R styling.
A lighter and better 90mm f2 or 2.8 being much more usefull,
I find the Contax G 90mm f 2.8 sonnar already having to much bokeh wide open sometimes.
Except being very heavy and Voigtlander making their VM 35mm 1.2 III to 330gr
or something making It passable for a walk around lens on the heavier side.
Suriu also seems to make excellent tripods on par with Manfrotto, not Gitzo but the last one being extremely durable but also very expensive.
I'm rooting more for those Chinese companies that make affordable but very high/good quality, then the one's giving cheap OK quality.
And also rooting for Voigtlander and Zeiss, the first one releasing some insane lenses the new VM 50mm 1.0, VM 35 1.2 III, the APO's,
also having most of their range available for FE mount. And Zeiss stil heaving some excellent M mount lenses and also Loxia, Batis, the Zeiss/Sony.
For Fuji GFX, covering the sensor is not the same as giving good or stellar performance, the 100mm Zeiss Makro Planar f2,
covers the sensor, on FF one of the best lenses but on the GFX It doesn't do It's magic.
More videos "Lice-a" this.
Good lens on a big hybrid body but quite ridiculous and unadapted on a m10 or equivalent. The focus is impossible with the range finder at these large aperture. Far better on a Leica sl or Panasonic s1.
What shall I say? It looks like a Leica knock-off
they'd really do well to come up with their own design language.

that is legitimately the most I've ever heard the word legitimate in a video before.
haha! my apologies, I guess. I don't script these videos at all in hopes that they feel less like a power point presentation and more conversational.
