Bring a scanner that can read the car's ECU and pull VIN. Compare to dash and door plates. And then run Carfax. Tell seller you want to do all this to see his reaction. Not fool proof but some defense is better than none.
Or just buy a new car .

Stop it, we don't know if the people who reported the vehicles stolen weren't in on it. The original owners could have did insurance fraud and sold the vehicle to these guys which turn around and most likely buy the same totaled vehicle from places like Copart then switch the vin to the stoley.

Simmer down people. The National Insurance Bureau gave the tip. So either the owners buckled under pressure or got caught with fake insurance claims. Moreover, there is no such thing as a "fake" vin number(you would have to have access to state & federal databases). You replace it with a wrecked vehicles vin. You can duplicate, but you would have to know all the vehicle's owner's info and signature that you're duplicating.
A decent OBD2 scanner will give you the correct VIN

It's not a "fake" vin. It's a vin from a totaled Copart vehicle so I'm sure they have access to the parts they need.

That or the insurance company kept pursuing the stolen vehicles claim. People think these guys are automatic thieves, but a lot of people commit insurance fraud because they can't afford the payments, tired of payments & full coverage, or racked up too many miles. And they sell their vehicle for close to nothing to guys like this that will switch the vins with a totaled vehicle.

Hows the insurance company know the vin was switched ?
The VIN number is hidden in so many places it is would make your head spin , back in the 1970s & 80s when my dad would take junkyard car's for the body's we would remove everything to lighten the car's up ( these were tube framed late model's and modifies. ) while doing so we would find the VIN all over from the engine block to the frame , I found a paper under the passenger side carpet under the seat with terrorists all over kinds of information on a Chevy Monte Carlo while striping it down for a Late Model . You would be amazed . Right down the road was a fair sized junkyard we would play in with the owners grandson and he knew the location's of a lot of them , every car was checked to make sure that they were not stolen . A G9 friend and mentor worked for the police department and was assigned to the auto squad at one point in his career , part of his job was to go over stolen , wrecked , found , etc car's making sure that they were not stolen before he was transferred to another position . If people think they will not get caught dealing with stolen cars they have a wake-up call coming , even cars going to the crusher get a good going over making sure everything is legit , it's a lot of paperwork with the state running a scrap yard / junkyard and I'm sure that the paperwork is more than back in the day . Our Toyota has everything from the windows to the doors trunk lid hood engraved with the VIN , it's so much stuff that parting it out would not be worth the few items not engraved . Crime does not pay unless you are employed by the government .

There is no way that these women that were with these men didn't know that something was going on. They just chose to ignore the signs because they were riding in style and benefiting from fast cash coming into the household. They are just as guilty if not more so, because if things go sideways and bullets start flying and striking bystanders or LEO then they play the victim while they benefitted.
