It's not a section of Manchester United fans, it's virtually all Manchester United fans who want Harry Maguire to leave Old Trafford. Just watching him come on as substitute at Arsenal, after four injuries ruled out better centre-halves (Varane, Martinez, Lindelhof, Shaw), is enough to send nervous fear into all of us, and it was zero surprise to anyone that he stood like a bag of cement while Declan Rice took his time to hammer in the winning goal. Why he chose to stay, after being offered a move to West Ham, is a complete mystery, perhaps explained by his arrogance and greed. That Southgate put him on in the second half of a friendly, to avoid having to put on Colwill, who would quickly expose how poor Maguire is, probably tells us all we need to know about how poor a manager Southgate is.

"it was zero surprise to anyone that he stood like a bag of cement while Declan Rice took his time to hammer in the winning goal"
Gobsmackingly poor to stand there and not close with that much time to move, doubly so because he does not have the excuse that there was someone near him to he needed to cover. I would expect better from an average high school CB.

I feel like as fans most of the media is gaslighting us. We saw week-in, week-out his subpar performances for United, the fact he can’t play like a modern-day CB (out from the back, quick turns, forward passing, good pace to track back etc), he’s fifth choice centre-back (including being behind a left back in the queue).
There is also evidence of his arrogance (“there’s a reason why managers keep picking me for United”, “I have nothing to prove” and , most recently, rejecting a move to West Ham where he would be starting CB (I think captain as well). He doesn’t deserve abuse, but at the same time he shouldn’t be given a pass to avoid criticism, and has brought a lot of the criticism on himself. Not all of it, but most. Yet the media speak as if there’s an unjustifiable hate campaign against a mercurial talent. “He plays well for England”. Wasn’t his last (not own) goal for England vs Andorra? And Panama before that? I don’t understand it

all correct apart from starting for west ham. I really think that's debatable. On talent he'd be miles behind Aguerd, Zouma and Kehrer. The only reason he'd have ever started above two of those would be solely because he's arrived for a fair bit of money and would have been a high earner. I think even a dumbo like Maguire probably realised that he'd have been on the west ham bench by the end of the season. Rather like lingard couldn't get a game at forest

I always hear pundits talking bad about Antony, Pogba, Bruno, and Martial about how awful their attitude, performances not good enough and how they never lived up to their price tags. The strange thing is none of them came out to defend them but they always defend Maguire when he has never had a good performance, and never lived up to the price tag. It's always the unfair criticism and abuse when it comes to Maguire. This guy never had a man of the match performance or selected as contender of any kind of good performances. This is solely Southgate's fault for both including him in the squad in the first place, then bringing him on in a friendly game that was already won and not giving other fresh players a chance. The situation the people have with Maguire sits squarely with Southgate. Everyone's issue is that Southgate constantly picks him and plays him for the national side, over players who are much more deserving. Folks are annoyed because of what Southgate has said in the past, about those picked and that he won't play favourites. He has done exactly that. He continues to pick players such as Maguire, Phillips and now Henderson, over those who merited the call up. When Southgate does then pick a player based on merit, he never plays them. Case in point is Tomori.
If Southgate wants the criticism of Maguire to end, then don't pick him. He's not playing for his club side, so he is undeserving. The same with Phillips. It doesn't matter if they have performed well for the national side in the past.

Somehow he remained captain last year when he hardly ever played, he says he has nothing to prove when he clearly does have plenty to prove, he refuses to leave and insists he wants to fight for his place when he is clearly not in Ten Hags plans, he's playing for England at the same time as sitting on the bench at Utd and refusing to move.. He's delusional if he thinks he is good enough for Utd, he never has been, and even more delusional if he thinks Ten Hag or Utd fans think he's good enough for Utd! And United are not prepared to either give him a compensatory payment to leave, or subsidise his wages for those 2 years if he moves to another club. He could've gone to West Ham, who wanted him....but greed meant he did not go. On that kind of money, he'll probably be prepared to see out his United contract IMO, whether benched or not, unless United pay him off to leave. Same with Sancho - the only place United 'd be able to offload him is Saudi Arabia, because (unbelievably) he's on £350k/wk with 3 years left on that United contract, so going anywhere else (like back to Dortmund for example, who are apparently interested) is an impossibility unless United finance the move, either in a lump-sum pay-off, or via a 3-yr wages subsidisation

I can answer that for you. They are the second most successful England team in history because the first place for that would be England’s WC win in 1966. Since Euro 2020 is the only other Final England have ever reached, it makes Southgate’s team second place. And this should plainly reveal, to England fans especially, that they are not an elite level team. I’ve seen so many English pundits and fans make fun of Italy for example (every Italy team that’s ever taken the field has been “aging” apparently) but in my 30 year life time I’ve seen Italy play five finals and win a World Cup and a Euro. When Maguire came out and said he has nothing to prove, after consistently performing way below the level expected of a Man United captain, it really started to build this momentum. It started back in the Ole days. He kept picking players who were consistently poor, no matter how badly they played, they were on the team sheet. It allowed players to drop their standards because ultimately it didn't matter. Maguire was the captain and leading by that very poor example.
His performances have been shocking for a long time, he didn't feel the need to move away to play football and regain his peak, sharp standards so he deserves to get stuck into. Nobody is judging him as a person but as a player. Nobody is making memes of players who opposition teams are scared of.
The fact Southgate continues to pick him because he's never let England down is ultimately going to end in disaster in the next major tournament. We want winners in every position. People who are hungry to play their absolute peak level, every single time they play. That's impossible for Harry to do as 4th choice CB for United. You DO have something to prove Harry, go out there and prove to everyone that you're class and have been treated unfairly, do it with football.

The media is literally gaslighting the fans. He is not abused - he is critiqued - and rightfully so. He has performed terribly for over 2 years, had numerous digs at the fans and media, and sat on his big contract instead of moving elsewhere. If these writers were actually Utd fans and watched him every game as opposed to making drastic assumptions based on international performances vs the likes of Panama, they would very well know that the criticism is just.
Southgate talks about never seeing a player come under this much scrutiny? I have never seen a player perform so terribly on the pitch for such a long time and be continually backed. It is such unwarranted support which incites and intensifies the criticism. The support of Maguire is simply undeserved. He is not the player people within football weirdly believe him to be. Training and dressing rooms do not translate to pitch, output and performances.
If the media and people within football really want to back Maguire they need to stop with the delusion, accept the reality and allow this man to fade into mediocrity where he belongs as opposed to making him the subject of their misplaced and uninformed narratives.

“He plays well for England” is the most ridiculous, redundant argument, I can’t believe the media still run with it. Most of his games have been qualifiers against Malta or group games vs Panama and Andorra in a team littered with world class talent, where you have 70+% possession. The crunch games that have mattered he hasn’t done anything to define playing well.

Theres a reason he is not in the Utd squad, so why Southgate is acting like a child and digging his heeks in, when everyone can see he somone usnt up to standard and Southgate exposing him like this is making it worse.

His power and his weakness as a gaffer are the same.

The treatment of Maguire is truly ridiculous and disgusting!!!
The favouritism from the Manager and the English media that is!
“He always plays well for England” they say. What about not marking Giroud properly against France!? Or the 2 mistakes that lead to 2 goals against Germany? Or losing his man against Iran which also cost us a goal? Or the fact he never checks his shoulder? And is far too slow getting back into position?
Maguire is a basic defender at best and a liability at worst! he has a terrible sulky attitude, never truly takes responsibility and spends more time checking his fringe than checking opponents.
Get him out of the England team and send Southgate with him! 🤬

It just doesn’t make sense, he’s contradicting himself and it will cause some of the players to look at him different, which will affect squad dynamics. How can he tell players that they need to play regular football to be picked, then turn around and not only pick Maguire, but also give him minutes? He’s making a fool of himself with that decision.

  • @jamesbowles6601
    @jamesbowles6601 8 месяцев назад +1

There was no need to bring Maguire on, Colwil and Tomori sitting on the bench could have come on to get minutes and experience. Southgate exposed Maguire to an unnecessary risk of ridicule, he isn't the best English center back so there is no basis to bring him on there.
Maguire had the chance to move to West Ham this summer where he would have got plenty of minutes and would have thrived in Moyes' system and got his confidence back, west ham fans would have taken to him quickly after he'd put a few headers in from set pieces. But initially he came out saying he thought he was too big for west ham and then stayed and Man Utd because neither team would pay his loyalty bonus. He can't complain about being on the bench when he threw away his chance for minutes and redemption.
