Mobile Dj From Middle East first Rule Bring your fan before your dj gear and your dj booth should be under the shade :) for me, I use the mini water cooler portable fan in front of my Laptop or below the laptop stands somehow it helps, I always avoid an active speaker during outdoor party especially in the summer, and prefer a passive speaker to add another fan front of the amp! I knew how it's sound to carry all of this extra equipment but we always at summer here!:p also, I use software called Macsfan control it helps in cooling the Mac, even now with the M1 I’m using the same software MacsFan and so far is good and much better than the Intel chip, but the M1 still under test, I believe Serato has been heavier on the CPU since the 1.9.6 update and now with 2.5.5, it is more hungry for CPU usage which leads to more heating issues and this is the main reason I switched to the M1 and yes it handles the Serato much better than the intel.I tested the Rekordbox outdoor it's reaching around 92 degrees with M1 which is not good while the Serato almost 70 to 80 degrees. Finally, my main backup is a USB with prepared music and an old window Laptop running Virtual dj for emergency :D
Thank you for sharing the video

In the New York area I did more Summer Outdoor Events so I invested in a Tent that cost around $100 from Walmart. I don't like to depend on other people for the protection of my equipment. Get there early to setup the Tent and then setup your equipment. You will need an extra hand/s to setup the Tent. Also, the threat could be a passing shower, which has happened before. So protect yourself. Also invest in some DJ Equipment Insurance in case of a real Big Problem you can at least recover your losses.

Funny story: friend of mine had just pulled his “brand new from the record store” 12” single copy of Fresh Prince’s / Jazzy Jeff’s “Summertime” (tells you how long ago this was - gettin’ old hahahaha). He proceeded to watch it warp on the platter of a 1200 as it played in the hot sun at an outdoor event. He had to go buy another copy. Lol.

I’ve had it happen where both my MacBook Pro and my backup MacBook Air thermal throttled in 109 degree temperature in Chicago. I’ve discovered this is one of the strengths of standalone gear. Don’t have to worry about overheating laptops. All in One System is definitely the way to go. If your laptop starts to throttle, you can quickly switch to usb drive as you said.
Also, a good backup, is a gaming laptop. Something made to operate and cool at higher temps. Looking forward to that XMG DJ 15 Pro!

@@ClevelandTerry would it be possible to get everything tied down in the contract? Seems a little excessive for a customer or wedding planner to expect you and your equipment to exist in excessive temperatures. Surely functioning equipment and DJ trumps asthetics ? Great video though, coming from I.T. I always have the backup siutuation in hand, I can remember having a row with another DJ who was helping out and his attitude was 'if the equipment fails, it's tough luck', I didn't work with him long and ignored his stupidity whilst still with him, I always have a backup, it's about being professional. I've just switched to Denon Prime 2 but still take along my macbook and Windows laptop Great video once again.

@@dredgeb Great channel! Yeh I agree, this seems like a teachable moment for clients and DJs. All entertainers/DJs should require a canopy or covering in their written contracts and used if the DJ deems it necessary... and also talked about before a client even signs the contract. If the client has a preference (ie aesthetics), the client can supply otherwise you WILL be providing your own if the first option goes missing or inadequate, party planners be damned. FWIW any *professional* party planner has an escape route for contingencies-what happens it it suddenly starts to downpour?

I played a 4th of July event in a parking lot a couple of years ago and they had a canopy for me, but it was an all day event and the sun started peaking around the shelter. I had already planned to keep my laptop out of the sun. I put it on a laptop stand under my table with a fan on it and used it in export mode connected to my pioneer players and mixer over Ethernet so it didn't have to do very much.
That worked great, but unfortunately the sunlight got to one of my speakers. I had to work the last hour and a half on one speaker, but it was loud enough for the space I needed to cover.
These days I only use standalone gear for outdoor gigs in this Central Texas heat. God help me if I have to work an outdoor wedding reception in the summer here.

I was at one of Skratch Bastid's BBQ events summer 2019 in Toronto. It was an extremely hot day. Anyway, right in the middle of a scratch showcase the mixer overheated and shut down the whole set. Took them like 20 minutes to recover.

I always push back against clients who want stands and both power and speaker cables to somehow be invisible. I always win, by the way. I refuse to compromise optimal point source setup and crowd coverage for women (and it's always women!) and their impractical, "fairy-tale locale" bullshit. I literally have never lost this argument. You make a good point about how clients often don't consider or prioritize the entertainers' comfort and satisfaction at the venue/event.
As for the heat issue, I feel your pain. I live in the Caribbean and even when it gets hot their is a moderating breeze; and yeah.....not providing a tent is a deal-breaker, so they almost always com through with that.
I do site checks days before, check the outlets for bad wiring, amperage, and work out setup schedule and logistics with whoever's in charge of that aspect of the gig.
I'm about to switch to a fan-less powered system as my main PA and I'm aware of the issues I may have with speaker setup in direct sunlight, although no one I know (other than a friend with a sound company) has reported such issues.

Used a cooling pad but it could not keep it cool. As you said Macs get very hot. That was my FIRST time doing an outdoor wedding in AZ as they are rare with the extreme heat. Heat is the enemy of all electronics no matter what it is. Not sure how much it helps but I use a laptop cooler that has fans blowing air directly into the bottom grill of my HP laptop that I use sometimes. Not sure how well it's working because thank God I've never had an issue without it. But since DJs bring up over heating so much I've just been taking percussions. I also picked up a tan colored pop up tent. I don't care what the hell they're vision is. We're working with science here. And yes, stop being stingy with the gig logs bro. Thanks for posting. As a 29 year DJ, I have learned to ALWAYS set my laptop on a cooling pad with multiple fans. ALWAYS! The fans inside a laptop are NOT adequate when the air temperature is warm. Also. I make the customers understand that my speakers can NOT be in the direct sunlight. Black speakers ATTRACT heat! NOT GOOD! So my equipment MUST BE IN THE SHADE & I explain to them why!

Started DJing at burning Man regional events in the swamp ass of the midwest. And let me tell you. I've had my old laptop shut down on me several times due to overheating. Of course I was so new that I didn't know what it was and I thought it was just serato pulling too much in my computer not keeping up but no. I pulled that sob apart and cleaned it out really good in between events and it still did it so I ended up buying a new laptop with a much stronger everything and then the next year it did it again so that's when I finally put two and two together and realized it was the heat / humidity...

MixMasterG has a Rekordbox Backup Tool that backups your entire collection from RB or iTunes into an external drive with all your cues and loops. This external drive can be plug and play with any computer with iTunes. Works with most major dj softwares...Rekordbox, SeratoDJ, VirtualDj, Denon, Djay Pro, etc. So if your main computer heats up, just get your secondary computer use the external. 2 small tips:
    1. turn the slider around so the top lip faces you. It's not a huge difference, but a difference nonetheless.
    2. pick up a USB cooling pad. They are dirt cheap and widely available. Again, not a huge difference but it helps.
In my experience even a little cooling will stop MacBooks from overheating. Hope this helps.

Tell me about it. I recall doing a College event in June of 1989, outside in the parking lot, facing a hotel in the distance(the college was near La Guardia airport). I originally set up inside of the college power house which was adjacent to the parking lot but then security told us to move because of insurance issues. So I put my turntables under the biggest tree I could find. Problem was that the sun moves and so that means the shade moves during the day as well. My records were melting to the point where when I took one off to change the next record, it would flop almost 90 degrees. Then on top of that, I had to reposition my array of speakers in the middle of the party because the people that were staying at the nearby hotel were calling the college and police because the music was too loud and they couldn’t sleep(in the morning/day time no less).
Another time, I did an inside party at a community center(last minute), and it was the middle of July and hot as hell. The place only had huge fans, and I had brought my own little occilating fan but it wasn’t enough. My amplifier kept shutting off during the party. So I asked my friend’s sister to go and get me six styrofoam cups full of ice and I placed them on top of my amplifier with my little fan blowing directly on it and it worked! It felt like a mini air conditioner was on! I finished the party without a hitch after that. The struggle was real(and still is). If I were doing a gig now, I would definitely get a laptop fan as well as some small battery powered fans. I would also bring a backup like an ipad or an iPhone/itouch.

TBH I think they were a little unreasonable not letting you put your speakers on a stand, not giving you a tarp to go under, because of their aesthetic. The damage that can happen to your laptop could total it, it could basically mean djing for free, because what you made will go back into repairs or having to replace your laptop all together. Generally I don't like to do daytime gigs for this very reason, but I have in the past and had similar results as you had there. I found this video interesting to see how someone else would deal with these circumstances. I hope you charged them a lot.

I was in the shade under the patio and the Mac was blazing hot. I put a few cold cans and water bottles on the top of the laptop on either side of the mouse and kept the laptop cool enough to get me through the gig. I had to do that about every 15 - 20 min and Rotate the cans/bottles to keep the Mac cool Not the best but worked and have had to do that a few times.

I once performed for DHL at their hub near the airport and it was outside, and like we all know. They don't think the DJ needs covering. In the blaring heat of noon, it started with sound distortion and eventually the Mac shut down. Luckily for me, they had a huge shop fan that I asked to borrow to cool down the equipment. From that point on, I take my own canopy with side removable side walls and a portable fan to every outdoor event and I always make sure everything is covered because I once lost a speaker to rain too. The outdoors are great but you have to be extra prepared for what nature throws at you in a pinch.

Just did an event this weekend where we hit record highs of 116-118. My event was from 7pm-2am. The sun doesn’t go down until 8pm. What I used for my MSI PC was a laptop cooler from Amazon and a small usb powered fan (4-inch) from Walmart. Another friend who uses a MacBook used a small laptop stand on top of the DDJ-1000SRT odyssey case with the same fan and he did ok. He was also going to use ice bags under the laptop like you did but opted for this safer option. He encountered heating issues a couple of weeks ago. Great suggestion. iPads are pretty solid back up choice. Only problem is those single usb-c ports do not provide enough power to the controller sometimes and they'll just go black and require restart. Now that was based on me using a 2020 iPad Pro 12.9" with a new Pioneer DDJ-SB3... So I returned the iPad and bought a brand new 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 chip and now the controller powers up every time. Apparently the new iPad Pros are USB-C lightning with M1 chip so they provide more power now.

In Florida I found this out the hard way DJing a relay for life event and I was supposed to have have a cover but they did not have it . I couldn’t get a song to play for more that a minute and the MacBook and controller would shut down. I thought my system was done until I realized it was the heat . I found a cover and everything worked fine after.

But personally those questions I would ask before I even took the job that would be a hard pass.
In my contract I have a tenant must be provided or a charge to provide a tent.
Not trying to buy new equipment if my stuff is working correctly

Please CT, do more gig logs. I understand the importance of being prepared and having a backup. As things open up and more festivals, venues, and clubs are coming back, DJs are going to be rusty. We will forget things or not having enough of the necessary equipment. I know personally, I will not out of sorts when I see a Pioneer CDJs and mixer for the first time in over a year for I own and played my DDJ 800 on my live streaming shows. Videos that this will help prepare and plan for either that 1st gig outside your home or apt.

Sportbrella is used by me as well as other DJ's like Vox Djs company on their events. the sportsbrella works to protect the equipment from the sun as the main priority. (Heavy Wind, = not recommended)

Love your Content Bro! I was a fan of Denon for the Longest because of these issues with either Laptops Freezing or overheating. My boy was djing for a show for a well known artist and his computer froze and the artist did the show Acapella and ripped it. I went out the next day and got the Denon DH5500. That was their first 2 layer Media Player. And I've rocked with Denon ever sense. Thanks for this gig log.

Same for the DDJ 1000 - ipad does not work with Algoriddim. I use a fastset table and the laptop stand has slats where the air can come in. I ditched the controller case a few years ago. I use a fan. Also the contract states that the client must provide shelter and power. Honestly, I’m starting to despise outdoor weddings.

Please please get an external mixer. you can always plug ANYTHING into a 5 port mixer and get right back up while everything cools down. I run everything through an external mixer. From My controller to my mixer, extra laptop in to mixer, Mics into mixer, speakers from my mixer, and any other device that I can think of. Before you ask. I have an extra 5 port mixer just incase. it has saved me a few times when my laptop started trippin. and I carry a small desktop fan

You also could use a laptop cooling pad to help with the heat dispersion. I use one at every outdoor event and it helps to keep it cooler than without. Also, I have it in my contract that if it is an outdoor event, I will use my popup tent that is large enough to cover not only my equipment but also me. Good job at keeping a level head and thinking about the client! Keep up the good work!

I wonder how a new M1 MacBook Air would have done in this situation? I've also DJed a lot of outdoor festivals, and in my set up, I always use a laptop stand and I pack a USB fan to keep the air around the laptop circulating. It also means if I'm using a fog machine close to my station where the air isn't moving at all, it can help circulate the fog/haze from the machine. Also +1 on the Gig logs, I really love to get the down and dirty what's happening on the ground at gigs info. Some of the tips I've picked up from your gig log have been awesome.

If I’m DJing outdoors I always bring what I need for heat, self contained never rely on venue or anyone else. You had to many connections in usb into laptop which makes it run hotter, you should only need controller usb. This is why I don’t use external drive also, only have for backup

Hey Terry, this is what I do in Extreme heat. Elevate the computer so that air can flow below it. Point a good fan at the computer (it helps a lot, even in the hot air). Lower the screen backlight to as low as it will go and once you mix the song, bring it back up. You can even turn off your screen and mirror it to your iPhone or an external monitor. Also, not a big deal but your tray is on backwards. The stop should be closer to you not the crowd. Good luck man!

fans - no carpet and more fans. oh and those special bases created 20 years ago for gaming laptops that you put the laptop on it , plugs into your usb port and blows air from under neath - very cheap solution - usually they have 3 or 4 fans built in the bottom. the ice bags is an ok idea but you might want something that won't leak and condensate around electronics.. gel packs are much more efficient and sturdy. set up agreements before hand with stipulations about what you need in terms of shade as well and come prepared with your own gazebo tent shade specially made for your system - even if they have one ready for you.

In this Houston Texas heat it's crazy but I use dry ice pellets in a styrofoam cooler I then place my computer on top. The cool air rises up to laptop keeping it cool all day in a 100 plus heat days. I still make sure to have a cover for my area.
Don't wrap a towel over the dry ice bag then put your computer on top.it can freeze your components.
