It’s ok Laura. Lol. None of us really believed you when you said you weren’t going to do perennials out there. (And are secretly thrilled you didnt stick to that.)
Daylilies are tough as nails! As a southern gardener and an archaeologist I know that they take clay soil and moist soil like a champ. I’ve rarely ever seen them wilt in the heat either. And the plant colonies they form through spreading can last easily over 100 years. I find them still living and blooming at old home sites from the 1800’s all the time. The basic orange variety was popular historically, with yellow less commonly.
My parents have some of the ancestors of George Washington’s daylilies. They were sold at Mount Vernon in the late 90s, and we bought some. They’re still thriving in their backyard in Georgia today. They’re yellow!
Do you know if the orange ones were called "Orange Tiger Lilies" back in the day? I live in Kentucky and these things grow about anywhere. I ask because I can remember my mother and g-mother calling them Tiger Lilies. It seemed they would plant them everywhere, I'm sure because they were free.😊 I have some of these orange lilies that I actually dug up from a ditchline, brought home and planted. It was around 5 plants. There is now a small hedge of them, around 10-12 mounds, they do multiply. I have moved them around my yard multiple times for various reason. I must say they are in bloom now and absolutely stunning.
END OF THE YEAR IDEA - Could you please make a supercut of all Russell’s photobomb’s? It would be a really fun video to see at the end of each December. ☺️ Either way, thank you for this channel, I’ve learned so much!
I'm sure she can, but please note that sterile varieties (most Proven Winners plants) only provide nectar, not pollen or seeds, so they aren't as beneficial to wildlife. It's best to at least have a good mix of natives, non-sterile cultivars and sterile for wildlife.
Fun fact: all daylilies come from an orange or yellow parent. Obviously, these are all Proven Winners varieties, but it you want to branch out I highly, highly recommend Oakes Daylilies. The number of varieties they have is incredible, and they send you a free plant with every order. (I’m not affiliated, just a fan)
Oh my goodness those are just gorgeous. Everything is looking so wonderful there. You guys give us so much knowledge, inspiration and motivation for our own gardens. Thank you for that. 💖
I have Stella D'Oro daylillies interspersed between my hostas (paradigm) at the front of my house ringing my garden. It's a brilliant show of colours all summer long. I can't say enough good things about these 2 perennials. People stop & stare because they're so pretty & most importantly a happy uplifting colour to have in your garden. I think if you can brighten someone's day with your garden, that's fulfilling. ☺️🌱💖
☕️💜Good morning everyone from hot and steamy southeast Michigan. Oh Laura, the Lillie’s are just beautiful, my fav is the purple one, but they are all stunning. Thank you again for a lovely start to the day. Enjoy your gardening expertise each and every day! 🌸👏🏻
Even when life brings us down and discouraged - watching Laura planting brings us all JOY in the morning, which is a positive way to start the day (after devotions) I adore these additions - the colors are so wonderful. 🌺🌺🌷🌷🌸🌸🌸🌸🌷🌷🌺🌺🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
The editing and post production on this video was just great! It takes something that would already be fun to watch to a new level! Your videos are so polished and professional! Great job Ken/Aaron!
I planted three of those daylily varieties last year: Storm Shelter, Sound of my Heart and King of Ages. Love all three of them. Sound of my Heart blooms first, followed shortly by Storm Shelter and then King of the Ages a few weeks later. This is my second season with them so I hope they bloom twice like you said. Last year they didn’t. Sound of my Heart has so many bloom stalks right now and Storm Shelter is getting them as well. So excited because I love them so much!! I am hoping Sound of my Heart will bloom soon because my Midnight Masquerade is blooming right behind it. So beautiful!! 😍😍😍
Hi garden friends, been watching Laura for years and love everything she does. Looking forward to seeing how everything evolves in her garden over the years!!! Garden tour, and drone videos…please!!😃
I love the way you think of all the things we might want to know about the plants and what you are doing 😊. Thank you for you thoughtfulness and all the wonderful tips and knowledge you share with us about plants 🙏💙🙏💙🙏💕
Good morning Garden Answer friends! I have bought last year similar color & style Proven winners day lily's. These really are quite beautiful! I put 2 in large flower pots down at the base of our driveway in full sun & they did very well. They have come back, I think deer may have nibbled on one at beginning of Spring but it is rebounding nicely. Thanks for the video & continuing to share your labor of love Laura and Aaron. Your landscape is coming together nicely.
Fifteen years of growing daylilies with no problems. Last year the deer decided to eat every daylily bud & bloom in the front ya4rd. In 2 nights they ate almost 70! Talk abour disappointment! This year all the front yard daylilies are covered with netting.
Daylilies are so underrated! When most people think of them it’s the typical orange variety that was in your Memaw’s garden. I have some of the same varieties that you just showed and they are rockstars in our southern AL heat. We are in the mid 90’s with heat indexes of about 105 right now and they handle the weather like champs!
I totally agree. They are rock stars. They do handle the heat and weather like a champ. If your on the fence get them you won't regret it. I live in AL also and cut some and brought them in to enjoy in my house. I love them. I have 3 of the ones she planted in this video and they are gorgeous.
Just make sure to get the re-blooming type. I had the tetraploid kind with huge blooms and they were gorgeous but sadly only for a short time, so I am replacing them with the newer re-blooming type.
I love mine in East Tennessee also! We just left West Yellowstone on Monday and traveling to Bozeman airport it was 28 degrees and snowing!! Landed in Nashville to 90 degree weather 🥵
Was just admiring Jenny's (Gardening with Creekside) bank of yellow Daylilies yesterday! -They're always so thrilling in a big bank - so happy you put ALL of the purple ones together Laura - they'll be such a gorgeous sea of color when they bloom!!! AND they're such easy care. Thanks for showing us the new and beautiful colors! My 85 year old Dad has been growing Daylilies in his front yard for over a decade now, and they are STILL showy every summer. He confides that people think he "works hard" on his garden and chuckles.
Greetings from New Zealand! You've been super inspiring for me as I've just started to sow seeds and design and plan my garden this year. I'm in zone 9a and just started winter so sometimes the information doesn't 100% apply to me at this moment but it's still super interesting and fun to watch! I thought I wanted a super low maintenance garden for the last 2 years but since watching you I've genuinely fell in love with gardening, caring for plants, the design aspect and all. Thanks for all the content!
I went back and watched the 4 garden tours when u first moved in and wow it’s amazing how gorgeous ur garden has grown, great work to you both and all that help. Love my mornings with you. ❤️
I cannot wait for them to bloom! Looking forward to the next update! The way you talk about a plant always makes me want to get it!! You have such an incredible eye for garden design! 😍😍😍
These will be gorgeous! I keep doing the math though…11 x ~$20 in the one area alone! I absolutely realize that this is a business (thank you!), but not many of us can plant over $500 in flowers daily. I’m one of those living vicariously through you! (I’d have to buy 2 of each one and then wait to divide them over a few years to get drifts that big!)
Thanks Laura! You provide motivation for me to get out of my garden each day. I love the day lilies and I'm thinking about going to the nursery and picking up a few of the more interesting ones especially the ones that bloom twice. I love having something in bloom every week.
Generally I'm not a fan of daylillies, but you've definitely changed my mind! All of the varieties are gorgeous! And will look stunning in your gardens for sure. 🙂
Just yesterday my daughter pointed some out and I said "nah, I really don't care for daylillies". But had I seen any of these options I might have changed my mind!
Laura changes my mind on a lot of plants. My kids see me buying something new and can't believe I bought it because I've always said I didn't like them. "Well, I saw it on Garden Answer and now I do!" I think learning about them and seeing them planted alongside a good companion plant makes a big difference. I guess it's understanding the plant variety.😄☺️🌼❤️

I love your videos, I learne a lot. I love perennials, because they come back each year. Daylilies are my favorite and highdrenias, there are others but these are my favorites. 🥰
Here in SW Ohio we are having the kind of weather you usually have there...temps in high 90's and feeling like 106. Those daylilies are "SO PRETTY". Love where you planted them.
Hi Laura, from the middle of the US! I'm looking forward to seeing the blooms of the Rainbow Rhythm® 'Siloam Peony Display' Daylily. I need to look for that variety in my local greenhouses and nurseries. I think that might look gorgeous paired with the coppery color of 'Mighty Chestnut' Daylily. I ordered a 60v Dewalt concrete mixer drill and 5" Power Planter with the heavy-duty tip, thanks to you, Erin from IG, and Jenny GWC! I hope everyone is having a good week! ~Margie💚🦋
Wow, your weather is really all over the place this year. The moisture will certainly help all your plants get established. Beautiful Daylilies. I also like the straight lines they add to the garden.
This video spoke to me, as this spring I finally split my day lilies and potted them in containers. Why didn’t I do this before? Already have flowers and spikes for yellow, peach, cream and of course the wild natural orange variety that always calls that “Summer is Here!”. They are a welcome sight in any garden, especially as a border. Love watching your garden thrive🪴
For some reason I thought that day lilies only came in the ubiquitous orange and were all shaped the same. Thanks for opening my eyes to all the different kinds and colors! 🥰🥰🥰
It’s ok Laura. Lol. None of us really believed you when you said you weren’t going to do perennials out there. (And are secretly thrilled you didnt stick to that.)

Such pretty color!!!

Neat and wonderful.
Hi guys, wondering if you can do a video on your top picks for a pollinator garden - similar to the ones you did on grasses, evergreens, etc.
That would be a great video
Great idea, I need pollinators for my veggie garden, having some problems with pollination this year.
I'm sure she can, but please note that sterile varieties (most Proven Winners plants) only provide nectar, not pollen or seeds, so they aren't as beneficial to wildlife. It's best to at least have a good mix of natives, non-sterile cultivars and sterile for wildlife.
I would check out the video about Benjamin's pollinator garden she did last year. I'm sure she used a lot of her top choices.

I have used Stella de oro liliy as a border for my flower beds and they spread and make a nice bush like shrub!!!!! Love your videos ❤❤❤
For some reason I thought that day lilies only came in the ubiquitous orange and were all shaped the same. Thanks for opening my eyes to all the different kinds and colors! 🥰🥰🥰
Hi Laura!!! Thanks for your knowledge and sharing your knowledge with me!!!!!
