- Known for being a low maintenance, drought resistant plant, the Daylily is a must have in your garden.
It survives in many climatic zones. As it grows in clumps, divide the cluster every five years in early fall before the first frost or in early spring. The plant will then reward you with many blooms.

You are a great teacher; even with all that information, it was easy to follow what you're saying. Not always easy for me. I never considered the callous idea, very clever! My mom passed away 3 years ago and her gardens had never been looked after. There are 2 huge daylilly rhizomes that have been scaring me. Not anymore! Now that I know what to do with them😊
Daylilies are so beautiful. As its summer try and separate the plant. Once you do divide them they pick up very quickly.
Hi Alice. I have the Stella O’dora & Red Zinger daylillies. Yes when the clumps get large I divide & spread them in my yard. Super easy care. I do deadhead mine. Great video. TY

When I first married, my Mom knew that I wanted a pretty landscape so badly, but knew nothing and didn’t have money! She started me off with daylilies because she said, “You can’t kill a daylily!” She was right. I divide mine at least annually and sometimes Spring and Fall. I have even dug them in the hot summers but I watered a few times a day for a week. I always add some good amendments such as Miracle Grow. The best place I’ve found to buy them is online ordering from Oakes. They are always packed nicely and they are generous with their amounts they mail. They show in their catalogs which ones bloom early, mid-season or late and whether they are repeat bloomers or not. Some will keep their leaves and some die down to the ground, but you will see them return every Spring. I love sharing mine with others just like my Irises. I also love that they are not invasive. They grow in clumps and you can dig and divide…share or move them to other area in your landscape.

I live in Montreal winters are somedays to - 30c snow is up to 3.5 feet and they do very well and some of my daylilies are 30 years old and believe me they a hedge one tough plant.

Thank you! Subscribed. They are so very hardy! My mother had wide rows along fences she thinned once in a while! Always has beautiful green leaves or profuse flowers! They take care of themselves! No winter problems because in the South! I’m in Florida! They are so easy to grow!

I’m a new subscriber! I’m a very , very new gardener and live in Reno, Nv. So we have hot summers and also snow in the winter. This is the first time I bought plants!!!! I’m sure I’m gonna learn a lot from watching you. Thank you explaining a lot in detailed, I just bought lilies in pot and transplanted it with miracle grow potting soil, mixed w vermiculite, perlite and coconut coir that my gardener friend introduced me to.. but I want to learn more about these beautiful flowers. I just got the lilies last week. So far it’s doing great.
Hi Olivia, Daylilies are one of the easiest plants to look after. So was a good choice. Its great you got good potting soil. Provided they are in full sun daylilies will do well. Do deadhead the flowers to encourage more bloom. Do contact me if you need any advice.

I love your video. Where do you live? Since you have a Jacaranda I'm thinking you are in Sourhern Africa. :) Your garden looks very tropical.
Hi Linda, thank you for your encouragement. I live in Nairobi, Kenya. We are 1,800 meters above sea level, which is pretty high. But what makes it an exception is that we are on the Equator. We do have Jacaranda trees and a lot of tropical plants.

Will simply adding manure to existing ground soil provide enough nutrients for the transplanted daylily to thrive?
Hi Latonja, you could also add compost to when you add the manure.Then turn the soil around the plants.

Thank you for your lovely comment. The morning glory tree that I have in my garden actually grows quite quickly once you give it the right condition. Full sun and well drained soil. It also depends where you live as its originally a tropical plant.
Here in Nairobi, Kenya we get it in nurseries already two feet tall so we don't really so seed propagation.
Just watched your video... I have a question... Isn't the part of the plant that you are calling a "rhizome" actually more commonly referred to as the "crown" ... ?? The American Daylily Society's information on their website shows the parts of a daylily plant and they call it the crown. Rhizome and crown the same...??
Thanks for sharing. While researching the root structure I found that the roots of the daylily were rhizomes. And on closer examination you can actually see that the offsets of the Daylily are joint together by the rhizome.
The Rhizome is where the plant stores its' food. So when propagating it always best to keep a rhizome on each separated offset in order for it to survive.
Others call it a Crown Rhizome as the rooting starts at the base of the crown. The crown being the area just above the roots and the leaves grow upward from it. However, what joins the offsets together to the mother plant is the Rhizome.

The best time to divide day lilies is early spring as the lilies start to grow and before thy start to flower. Also in early autumn is a great time when the clumps are full.

If you do your transplant in spring, you should get a blooming season this year. Later in the year you may get the first blooming season the following year
I just bought some daylilies, it's getting hot here in th high 80s or 90 degrees. Should I put in a container and wait to plant in the fall? If so, what is the ideal conditions to plant?
Hi when I planted my daylilies we were experiencing temperatures up to 30 degrees celsius. However, Nairobi is 1,800 feet above sea level and somehow 30 degrees celsius feels very different to 30 degrees in lower altitude.
Daylilies have many cultivars and all are temperature tolerant, what I would advice is grow it in a container and then plant in fall. You could also consult with your local nursery on the type of daylily you bought and get advice as to whether your daylily is suited for the temperature in your garden.
Trust me, you can plant them. Keep them moist and they’ll be fine! You might need to water 3 times a day for a week or two, but they’ll be fine.

Hi Mary, growing from seed will take a while for your day lilies to establish and produce blooms. I find it quicker and easier to propagate through division.
They will not grow “true” from seed but you will get some beautiful new varieties!! It takes about 3 years from seed to first flower
