When the first high roll ends in a tie I literally feel like the match is worth twice as much, it's fun to joke with and it adds to the feeling of competition. Imagine showing up to play a game and deciding "but I don't want to play any games while we do this."

Amongst my favored regulars we do a "poker roll" of 5 dice, best "hand" you can make from the roll. (2 pair, 3 of a kind, straight, etc) Also I think high roll ties are underrated and having to re-roll adds drama to the process. I've definitely re-rolled the same die roll 3 times, and by the last one we were both really invested in the outcome just for being so rare and novel an event.

My brother and I always do odd/even when we cube, but not with dice. It's either the minute hand on the clock or the collector number on a random card nearby. Neither are very random, we both pick odd when we can. But we enjoy it!
Also, adding to "people aren't that good with math and probabilities", the number of people I see locally who still pile shuffle decks to "eliminate clumps" before doing real shuffling baffles me.

I just challenge my opponent to a fist fight. Clean, easy, and I stop crying from the beating after a few turns.

It's also good motivation to improve yourself.
Want to stop getting beat up at the start of each game? Take some boxing lessons.
Additional bonus of going first more often, as well.

great take! and it's amazing to hear mtg players argue for any course of action other than the Most Optimal one, considering things like the human element. rare and precious.

Any potential time savings by avoiding ties is more than offset by time spent suggesting a different approach. Just high roll and move along.

Deciding play/draw before a game kind of depends on how well you know them -
    high roll with an acquaintance
closest to 7 with the homies
a full game of ceelo to decide play/draw against my brother
Magic players are equal parts gamer and gambler

burn players always have a particular vibe. you can tell before they even take their cards out. i can't describe it, but you just know.

i invented a game like this where instead of high roll or odd/even, its "whoever rolls a prime number first". its really caught on at the lgs's i play at. sometimes people will complain and say it can take a lot of rerolls but i think its funny (and obviously if somebody isnt up to it i just high roll or do whatever)

Inefficient?? Saving time?? Like you don't have a second! 1 second! To re-roll a tied result? Get a life...please, high roll is the only roll.

i keep 2 copies of each Scissor Lizard, Rock Lobster, and Paper Tiger in my deckbox, I give my opponent 1 of each and we play a little mini game! it's great when you tie, because then it becomes a mind game of "is he going to play the same card again? does he think im gonna think he's gonna pick the same card, should i pick the same card?" etc etc.

The issue here is that you could be accused of cheating with marked sleeves/cards.
I keep one set and pick first before the opponent.

Yeah, always high roll on two dice in any tournament setting, especially anything competitive REL or higher. In a casual setting, I've done a lot of stuff up to and including the noted "Scissors Lizard, Rock Lobster, Paper Tiger" game. When it matters though, two dice high roll. Period.
While this is kind of taking that last topic and running with it a bit, people that fumble the cards in their hand and/or have no pronounced dexterity handling their cards on the table are usually pretty easy tells that you have an edge purely on level of experience; not always, but often enough. In a somewhat similar fashion, the uber hand-shuffilng, never *isn't* flicking their cards around in their hand caliber of player is typically one of three things:
    1. Someone that has developed the habit over many years of playing and might actually know what they're doing.
    2. Someone trying to emulate the person from category 1, but is still relatively inexperienced.
    3. Someone that thinks it makes them seem more competent than they actually are.
I was usually able to get a pretty good read on my opponents' based on these two metrics alone, lol.

Hi 5 to the buddy who suggestd callin odd/even on the die. Did tat som 20 years ago when I still bothered to play sanctiond events. Nowadays, for sake of EDH, I find players rollin die in turn (especially with same set of dice, esp with >4 players), borderline unbearabl - same undesired draws, folks forgettin their roll & som of us havin to mentally work out who-to-sit-where… groan. Haf long sinc prepared a set of MtG creatur token cards with different power for every1 to draw & assign seat/turn order.
Sort of understan the cultur thing behind high roll but even a guy (me) not particularly good at math, soon figured out the potential waste, most of the remainin players should be abl to do better. & to b clear, I hand U the die for YOU to roll & call odd/even, so it’s practically 0 chanc fer me to cheat, it’s outta my control
