I bought 2 in 2023 they are available for under 400 dollars. Even though I have M1 Ultra Mac Studio I always wanted a trashcan model. They work great even today. Under 400 you get 256gb ssd, 64gb ram, 6 core cpu and dual d500s. 675 gets you 8 core, 1tb ssd, 64gb ram, dual d700’s I use them for Audio work in the studio. Solid workhorse and I can run some plugins that have not transitioned but still run even modern plugins so I can load up stems etc because all plugins now load. Its fast for audio no glitches etc. connected to some UAD Apollo rack units etc..
I just bought a Mac Pro trash can 4 core, D300, 1TB and maxed out ram at 128GB for $700 locally from a company that was upgrading their system. I then upgraded the CPU to the 12 core for $80 (fairly easy task if you have the tools) and this machine works great for music production. I bought the M1 mini but wanted to wait before switching to silicon as many plugins and audio interfaces are not compatible yet. Decided to give this one a chance to tide me over as it was a good deal and I will definitely keep this computer. I know the benchmark test are pretty low for today’s standards but in the real world im actually able to get many more tracks in Logic or Pro Tools than the M1 Mini whereas my 2018 mac mini i7 6 core was not doing well with VI like Omnisphere etc and was always at 100/102 degree Celsius with fans on full blast. The mac pro is super silent so I can have it in the studio, the temps even recording lots of tracks in Logic stay at 53 Celsius with fan at 1000rpm max and idle is 41Celsius at 789rpm. It looks great too! I just do audio so D300 are totally fine for me. Anyway hope that helps any musicians or anyone interested in music production!
I got a Mac Studio in 2022, and I’m in the middle of transitioning from iMac Pro to Mac Studio. But prior to that, my “trash can” Mac Pro was a backup Mac to my iMac (in case the iMac has issues, etc). Last month, I finally decided to wipe the old Mac Pro, and re-image it as a “lab” or “test” mac, then shut it down and use it mostly as office decor in the backdrop to my office. If i need to power it back on, I can still use it-- it is surprisingly adequate for most task too if I need to use it; but the backup role will be pass to my iMac Pro.
Bought the baseline 4core "trashcan in 2013. Loved the sleek look. 3.7GHz quad core Intel Xeon E5. 32 GB 1866 Mhz DDR3. AMD FirePro D300 2GB. Catalina 10.15.7. Only upgrade was to upgrade the RAM to 32GB. STILL...my main machine. Very happy with it. It does everything I need. But damn, those M1 Macs are really tempting!!!
Great overview. I bought my trashcan last year because I needed multicamera video editing in HD. The dual GPUs being underutilized is an issue outside of Final Cut Pro, though. In addition, Apple moving to Metal has left some open source projects like Blender in the dust.
Great video! I agree with you. BUT one thing which you forgot(?) to mention: MULTIPLE DISPLAYS. M1 Mac Mini supports only 2 external displays. I have 3 displays -> my choice (in 2022) was either 3500€ Mac Studio or used Mac Pro for 500€ (baseline, 4-core, D300). I went with Mac Pro: stability, software support, etc. And I have a principle that one who has a business, should rarely buy the first generation product of anything - unless you are willing to coop with the problems and hiccups what comes with the new products.
Mine is 6 core / 12 thread with dual D500s. I run and AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 in an eGPU. Performance is still awesome (general office plus photo and some music editing). The best upgrade was adding a 1TB NVMe drive. This has dual boot into macOS 10.15 (Big Sur) and Windows 10 Pro (latest build). I can game on this rig at Ultra settings in all games. I'm keeping it.
So yeah.., nice informative video. I bought a 2013 MP this year for $900 off ebay. I had always wanted one, but could not afford when it was newer. There were several reasons for buying this machine, which is a 8 core with 64GB DDR3 and a Firepro D700 , 1TB SSD One was to add to my mac collection (yes, I have a room full of ancient mac hardware) and to port all my info from my 2013 27 imac, because the screen is having some issues. The imac was running Mojave, and I didn't upgrade after that, because I had a lot of apps, games, and other items I used a lot, and they would not work on the next OS upgrade. So I bought the 2013 MP to port over all my stuff from the 2013 imac. So now I get the best of both worlds. On one side of the TB drive I run Mojave, and the other side the modern OS Monterey. What a difference. Overall, I think it worked out well, because I like the newest OS and using it on a daily basis, but when I want to do some old school gaming (Unreal Tournament) I can jump back to Mojave with no problems.
First off, my complements on this video series. I stumbled across this video by accident, and enjoyed it so much that I went back to the beginning of the series. It's refreshing to watch intelligent, well-thought-out videos that aren't full of errors or "ummm... wait..." every other word. As a long-time IT professional, I'm not a huge fan of videos that waste my time. As someone who is also visually-impaired, I *really* appreciate someone talking clearly and not just flashing a bunch of words on the screen over horrible music. I rarely subscribe to channels, but I've done so in this case. Now that the compliments are out of the way: I bought a 2013 Mac Pro a couple of weeks ago to sit next to my M1 Mini. (Oddly enough, connected to a 32" 4K Dell monitor, which I find to be a hilarious coincidence.) Why? Well, the M1 Mini replaced my 2018 i7, and while it's insanely fast and fun to use, one of the things I do both professionally and personally is run a bunch of VMs. My original plan was to build an AMD-based mini server, but one day my spouse (bless her soul!) suggested looking at a Mac, partly because the assistive tools work so well for me. But what to get? Not another Mini, and I don't want an iMac, as I have a monitor that works well for me. And, face it, the 2019 Mac Pro is drool-worthy, but rather pricy. Then I remembered the 2013 Pro. I had one on my desk a few years back when I worked for an arts organization, and I liked it. I've a fondness for "misunderstood" Macs; I still own a number of G4 Cubes. Face it, the trashcan is pretty. With a 12-core Xeon, 128G RAM, and a 1T SSD, it's also a decent machine for virtualization. Ideal? No. But much more fun than yet another Linux server. Got enough of those at work, thanks. I was lucky enough to score a "new" open-box unit with the above specs and D500 graphics (plenty for my needs) for a reasonable price. A bit above my original budget, but I have no regrets. I've already beaten the hell out of it, and it's taken all the loads I can throw at it just fine. Did I mention it's pretty? In the end, it's a reminder that shiny and new is great, but if a computer does what you need, then it's all you need.
So you mentioned styling and performance for years to come and that is why I purchased this right now. I wanted a different experience and hey, the iPhone hasn't let me down yet. But I edit only in 1080p. 46M views can't be wrong. I get it is older, but I was looking at an M1 with eGPU and $3800 plus. I got everything I needed with my current setup for $1700. Now, I will be upgrading it and referring to this video for parts and such. But I really wanted to be around $2000 and no eGPU setup plus peripherals could get me there. I knew going in this was a test of the Apple software but I have the time, cloud subscriptions, and such. The only thing that I am not crazy about is all the fonts I use and may very well lose with the switch. Thank you for this extremely well-executed video.
I'm seriously thinking of buying the 12 core one, now they are going cheap .. for music production .. I currently still use my Mac Pro 2008 so this should be a huge step forward
I'm happy with our 6,1 MacPro (12core + dual D700). Works fine for video editing with FCP. One note regarding internal SSD upgrades though. When I upgraded to Monterey, a required firmware update would not install because the installer refused to use a non Apple OEM SSD. I had to swap out my Aura Pro X2 for an Apple SSD, do the firmware update, then I could swap back to the Auro Pro X2 and complete the Monterey upgrade. Still being able to use the latest mac OS is another plue for this older Mac Pro.
I currently work with a macbook pro 2013 i5 since my mac pro 2007 is no longer in use (I do Audio and video and have an old digidesign HD3). So I believe even the basic one would be a huge improvement. M1 is still under development and I will wait 2 more years to dig into it.

I've been a Mac Pro user since I bought my first used 2007 Cheese grater model, and later upgraded to a mid 2010 model. I wanted a 2013 machine because I really liked the look and size of it, but the cost didn't make sense, because the 2010 was running so strong, and I really couldn't afford the 2013. Well, the 2010 finally gave up the ghost last year, and I found a really good buy on a used 2013. The machine I bought came with an 8 core Xeon processor, 64 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and dual D500 GPUs. I got the machine for less than $1,000, and I really love it. I run a lot of VMs for work and personal use, and this machine is great for that. I've seen a lot of videos on RUclips where people love to berate this machine, but I am happy I bought mine, and am looking forward to may yárs of use from it.
Great video once again. I was outbid on a Mac Pro (late 2013) at the last few seconds which I was annoyed about at first, but after watching this video I'm kind of relieved I was. It does the job for most users and can be upgraded, however in terms of longevity it's coming to an end. Yes, it works with Big Sur but judging by Apple's timeline in phasing out their older products, it will undoubtedly not run the latest MacOS in a few years time. Considering it's 8 years old it's had a pretty good run.
Well, this comparison between the 2013 Mac Pro and the new M1 models was great, but you left out what is probably one of the biggest advantage of the 2013 Mac Pro: its many ports for USB, monitors, audio hardware, etc. In this regard, it is a real workstation computer, while the M1 models are not (they even lack ports, actually).

@@Soy.danielreyes I bought it already. I did have to update the processor and RAM but it was well worth it. It's capable of so much when it comes to music. What I like (especially after I updated the Processor), it freed up system resources that I was able to redistribute to my music instruments. I was able to have over 25 different layers of musical instruments w/effects operating at the same time. Truly is a great system to produce if you are on a budget. I am sure some would say, just get new laptop with an M1 processor. But I like having MAC Pro. As for its graphics card, if you plan to get into graphic design, get a eGPU if you go this route. But for music, definitely put money into putting in the best Intel Xeon this system can use and use the rest of your budget in RAM and SSD. Just my opinion and suggestion.
Just want to say I big thank you, I came across this video by chance and am now a firm subscriber. I love my 8 core D700 Trashcan and as a Sound Editor and Photographer it still rips through stuff but has been misbehaving recently and I was at my wits end. The video encouraged me to redouble my efforts and after a clean reinstall I finally got it back. And thanks for the tip about the Fan app. Looking forward to keeping it going now at least until a M1X Mini Pro comes along.

Agreed. I was going to comment the same. I watch YT on TV more than anything, which doesn't use the chapters feature, so it's nice to know I'm watching a video designed as such. Practical if I want to skim through the video as well.
So on this platform. It is eerily similar to the chapters in the seek bar. I thought to myself, man that is cool when I saw it. But it just seems like more work. I understand the how-to, but I am too concerned with knocking out content.
I've had this trashcan back in 2013 and used it till 2015 and then I've switched to Windows platform. My model was 8-core with D700s. I was a good computer but exceptionally overpriced and doing casual work it wasn't any faster than my 2011 MacBook Pro 17. There were (and still) very few apps that could take advantage of 8 cores. I found myself using my MBP much more so I eventually sold my trashcan and replaced it with a Windows machine for work and gaming. I tried running games on my Trashcan under Windows but the ran slow (even though the crossfire only worked in Windows) The most beautiful thing about it was quietness and the looks but what many people don't realize once you put the thing on a table and hook up all the stuff (and there's a lot cause it doesn't have much storage and ports!) it doesn't look that pretty anymore with all sorts of adapters and cables sticking out of it. Apple even made the ports light up once you rotate the computer but with that cables sticking out you couldn't turn it easily. So on a paper it was a beautiful design but not so well thought out and practical.
I still don´t get the complaints about this working monster. I have one running Big Sur with 32GB RAM. For daily stuff and some basic video editing, it´s fabulous. And I can´t complain about how it handles my Lightroom tasks. And besides of that....it simply looks great! :)
Still loving mine and I still need to get Final Cut Pro so I can enjoy the 12 cores.. or DaVinci... But still happy with my 12 core I purchased in 2020.
What has been your use-case so far? I personally prefer the editing experience of using Final Cut, though I think at this point DaVinci is technologically superior. But rendering speed is second to working speed and I prefer working with FCP

Still rocking my 11 year old MP5,1. Upgraded almost any upgradable item over the past years. 6 core CPU, Radeon RX 5600 XT, 24 GB ram, nvme, ssds, BT4.0 and wifiac, USB-C, USB 3.1. I’m aware that I’m not getting the most out of all the hardware, but it runs like a tank and still does the job for me.
Great video, I sold my 2013 Mac Pro, and I am using a new M1 Mac. I think it is a pretty good improvement across-the-board, especially in connectivity having thunderbolt 3. While I love the Mac Pro for nostalgic reasons, it’s just a bit of a hassle with all of the thunderbolt 2 dongles and performance wise I prefer the M1

Ever since Mac Pro 6.1 was released I have always admired and deeply desired it. It was inaccessible to me in those years. I'm an Apple fan and I have a 2012 Mac mini, a 2014 MacBook Air as well as the entire line of iPhones, iPads, Airports and iWatch. I have seen your videos related to the Mac Pro 6.1 many times and you finished convincing me. It is a work of art. It's on the way (6 Core, 16GB RAM, 256SSD, Dual AMD 500 GPUs) and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I can give you my opinion and experience. Later I will begin to carry out all the possible upgrades. By the way, I keep my first Macbook Pro 2007 that had problems with the Nvidia GPU and stopped working. Still using my '13 Mac Pro! Waiting to see what Apple does with its next version of Mac Pro. I'm a photographer and I find this puppy still manages most of what I put to it. I still need more power for my bigger jobs as it does get tiring waiting for the system to catchup with me! I had though about going to the newer Cheese grater but it was too expensive and really didn't offer that much for my work flows, I also like the smaller footprint of the '13 Trashcan! If the rumors are true with a smaller Mac Pro M series CPU I will likely jump to it.

In 2019 that meant I got a 12 core 128GB D509for 2.5k (USD). I had watched your channel for a bit which was very helpful. The cheese grater in my case had finally run its course in terms of being able to handle the required new versions of music software and Mac OS. Great overview here on the heels of the M1 release. i have been using an M1 MacMini with Logic Pro, the base model. It blows away my last Mac in every way. Its a bargain, i havent even come close to limits with plugins and track numbers.

I have this machine with the Quad-Core CPU & D700 cards in it and 32GB RAM. I’ve had it for a little over 5 years now from new and its not a bad machine... but I really would like to upgrade its CPU to the 8 or 12-Core version! it does really need cleaning out thoroughly however, but I am looking into this at the time of writing this!

I have to agree the Mac Pro 2013 is an excellent machine and especially for a music production: super-quiet, server-like stability, enormous RAM and that lovable design - makes it still valuable in 2021 - at least on my desk. ☺️.. .. surely the new macs may offer a good competition, but - true is: 2013 Mac Pro’s have that beautiful design that may prevail for a little longer. :).
I traded my 6-core trash can for my 2nd Mini M1 w/16GB RAM. I only had to pay $20 difference so why not? I do like the look of the trash can but gotta let it go while it still is worth something.

I love the Mac Pro 2013 that I now have 3 of these Mako Reactors - I use if for my Architectural Design Business, 3D rendering, Graphic Design, Photography and my RUclips Channel Spitting out 1080p Videos. Absolutely amazing machine that I don't need any other. and Yes I use all 3 Mac Pros when Networking Rendering its my own little render farm.

Just for whose interested, I have a fully maxed out Mac Pro 2013 trashcan, and just bought the new M1 MacBookAir M1 (with SSD of 512Go and 8 GPU cores). On BruceX test (FCPX), the trashcan is still 6 seconds faster. Not to bash the MBA in anyway here, don't get me wrong, it's fantastic to equal the mac pro 2013 in a so small factor laptop that is the MBA. But, we are also 8 years after, and the MP is faster.
2023 ... I have one of those machines. Currently have 4 monitors connected to it. I wish I could post the photo as it looks ridiculously good. It is plenty fast for what I do ... day trading, web development, some Final Cut.

I originally got the 6core in 2015 and upgraded all but the GPUs. the CPU is the 12core but 120W as opposed to 130W power. Just streaming Premiership, the CPU is around 50 degrees Celsius running Big Sur and streaming software. I recently acquired an i3 Mac Mini 2018. Running Big Sur streaming Premiership at 34 degrees and cool to touch. It is also generally snappier than the Trashcan and can run all of my Logic Pro Projects with lots of synths and plugins at around 50 degrees. The Trashcan runs them at about 60 degrees but has loads more unused CPU available than the Mini.
Been working with one of these (mid-range model) since 2014 and have loved it! I use it for PS, Logic Pro, AE, Final Cut and the performance has remained more than adequate for my needs. We've started to dip into 4k though and that might be the straw that breaks my upgrade patience!
Just buy it if you like it and need an old Mac OS. I have the 6-core and make websites and it's great for that. Easy to replace the SSD (Samsung 970 Evo Plus). Very sometimes it's freezing for 30-45 seconds. I've heard that's a problem caused by the GPU. I think we can expect the M1X around June 2021.
In China, this old machine has a nickname called "Rubbish bin", cause it looks like a small rubbish bin... But it still can work, I got a Windows-10 system on it, there's no big problems, still reliable. The rubbish bin can still do some work on picture, video design, sort of creative work. Anyway, when rubbish bin is working, the white gas comes out from top, which makes it look like an odd UFO. Lolll

Thank you for this objective and informative presentation. I really appreciate the time that you have taken to explain things so clearly and in great detail. A customer of mine is a graphic artist who mainly uses Photoshop and Illustrator. He has a 2010 Mac Pro tower which we upgraded to the latest Xeon that it can handle (1 CPU only on this machine), added extra RAM for a total of 96GB and replaced the HD with an SSD. We also updated the firmware so that he could install High Sierra, but that's as far as it goes. It has two video cards - the original AMD 5770 with 1GB of VRAM and an NVIDIA GeForce with 2GB of VRAM. He has 3 large monitors connected and a large Wacom drawing display. It's a great setup. However, because he needs to update Photoshop and Illustrator to either newer versions or the latest version, he needs MacOS Catalina at a minimum. He therefore decided to purchase a Mac Pro 2013 recently. It has 64GB RAM running at 1066Mhz, the 12-core CPU running at 2.7Ghz, a 500GB Apple SSD and the dual D700 GPUs. On paper this all looks very impressive, and I do admit that the design is aesthetically pleasing. In practice however, this computer is a complete headache. 1st) It only has one HDMI port. With dual video cards that are reasonably powerful, it's only logical that this computer should be designed to handle 2 or more monitors with ease. Especially if the target customers are people who use Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and other editing software. Such people use multiple monitors not as a luxury, but because they need to in order to manage their workflow properly. This computer should have at least 4 x HDMI or DSP, or a combination of the two and everything should be easily plugable. According to Apple's own specs: 3 x dual-cable 5K displays OR Six Thunderbolt displays. Yeah, OK sure - every person and every business will go out and purchase Apple's nice but ridiculously overpriced monitors (not). So instead of giving the user the freedom to purchase whichever monitor they find suitable (be it for budgetary or other technical reasons), Apple forces them into a limited option which revolves around purchasing another Apple product. All this being said, it is possible to connect a maximum of 3 non-Apple monitors - but you have to jump through f'ing hoops to get them to work with adapters. It's pathetically asinine and idiotic (something that is obviously part of the culture at Apple). Hence, we can only connect three of my customer's monitors - one being the Wacom unit. 2nd) I like the fact that the transfer rate for Thunderbolt is so fast. With TB2 on the Mac Pro 2013 it's 10GB/s throughput vs. the 2.5Gbps that the onboard USB3 is capable of. With TB3 it is 20Gbps and TB4 is 40Gbps. This of course is amazing, along with the fact that you can daisy-chain external peripherals. But, the fact of the matter is that the implementation within the consumer product industry is still rather small in 2022. Most non-Apple computers don't have TB and the small selection of external peripherals are expensive or incredibly expensive - which makes the cost to benefit ratio absurd. For the most part there isn't must useful hardware out there that the vast majority of people and businesses require. Every single AMD powered computer does not have TB on the MoBo, and that's about 36% of the computers out there according to latest statistics. Considering that USB 3.2 has speeds up to 20Gbps and USB4 can go up to 40Gbps, it makes no sense to even bother with TB for the most part. People don't need to chuck out their USB2 or USB3.x peripherals just because a higher standard is introduced. 3rd) Non-modular and proprietary layout that limits upgradeability in general. The biggest issue being the GPU from what I have seen and heard. This is really at the core of the disdain that people have for this computer. And instead of replacing it with a another modular unit within a (for Apple) reasonable price range, Apple comes back with the insult that starts at USD $6k and goes up to USD $53k. 4th) Upgrading beyond the 64GB of RAM can reduce the RAM clock speed by half. Several sources on the Internet indicated that a module with 1866Mhz will be reduced to 800Mhz. So if you beef it up to 128GB you lose half the speed. If you get the right PC motherboard and CPU combo you can avoid this. When you put this all together it is no surprise that so many people either jumped over to Windows (reluctantly) or had someone build them a Hackintosh. From my experience thus far, the Mac Pro 2013 is a complete waste of money. My customer paid CAD $1250 for this used computer and I could have built a much, much better Hackintosh for the same amount of money with brand new parts. I also reluctantly recommend Windows, but what are people supposed to do? Things are not only idiotically asinine and complicated, but now also completely unaffordable to most individuals and businesses alike. It's only a minority of people and businesses who are willing to put up with Apple's BS and have the funds to afford their ridiculously overpriced hardware.
Thank you 😊 In response to your points: 1. You do not have to buy an expensive Thunderbolt display. All the Thunderbolt ports on the 2013 Mac Pro are DisplayPort compatible, so you just need mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort (or HDMI cables, or whatever the monitor needs). I personally wouldn't use the onboard HDMI for anything as it is limited to 30Hz at 4K. 2. Thunderbolt 2 is 20Gbps not 10, and both TB3 and TB4 are 40Gbps. Most decent Intel Windows machines are now shipping with TB4 - even my new Surface Pro has Thunderbolt 4. USB 3.2 can only achieve 20Gbps with the 2x2 standard, which has even less devices out there than Thunderbolt. The USB4 standard is still 10Gbps, but the USB4 standard incorporates Thunderbolt 3 and it is this which is capable of 40Gbps speeds with Thunderbolt devices. USB devices are limited to 10Gbps (or 20 with 2x2). There are solutions available for Thunderbolt on AMD machines, though it does depend on motherboard manufacturer. Certainly, Lenovo do offer one for my Threadripper powered workstation. TB4 is becoming more common for Ryzen and Threadripper (www.windowscentral.com/can-you-use-thunderbolt-3-amd-ryzen-pc). 3. Used GPU cards for the 2013 Mac Pro are starting to become available on eBay at sub-$1,000 prices, which is still very expensive. It is the big failing of the 2013 Mac Pro, and those who need serious graphics performance will need to go eGPU or look elsewhere. The 2013 Mac Pro is better suited to those who need VMs and other features that are well-suited to Xeon chips. AFAIK Apple doesn't sell any replacement GPU cards for the 2013 Mac Pro - the prices you mention are cards for the 2019 Mac Pro. 4. I always recommend 64GB max for this very reason. The 2013 Mac Pro officially only supports 64GB - Apple has always stated that.
I've just bought one in 2021! I need something with a lot of cores, but I don't want an iMac & can't justify the price of an iMac Pro or new Mac Pro. I've tried an i5 Mac Mini, but thought it was going to melt due to the 6 cores and Intel architecture. My everyday machine is an M1 Air, but I need something to act as a wired desktop for VMs & server. I don't need any internal expansion & the cheese-grater Mac Pros won't run the software I need due to their age. The M1 machines won't work with the majority of my VMs at the moment. Prices do seem to have stabilised for these, so you either pay the money up front for a used, 6/8/12 core model with 512GB/1TB SSD and 32/64GB RAM, or you buy a base model (of which there are loads) and spend the money on the upgrades yourself.
Great video. I'm trying to decide between waiting for the new M1X Macbook Pros, or upgrading my 2013 Mac Pro 8-Core with an more RAM and an EGPU. My internal gfx card has failed for the fourth time (I get render glitches on every export done with the GPU), so I'm pretty desperate for a solution. I assume that upgrading my current system would be far cheaper than paying for a kitted out new MacBook pro 16. What are your thoughts?
Depends on whether you can find a decent GPU at the right price, but I’d expect it would be cheaper… but then with the new MacBook Pro you’d be getting a lot more than just a decent GPU. I don’t think I could recommend an investment into the Trashcan at this point.
How about Apple using Trashcan Mac for high end mac mini. It would have sufficient cooling for ARM system. I'd get a Trashcan Mac, with maxed out specs, on the cheap.
I'm sticking with my last perpetual licensed Adobe CS6 apps, Acrobat Pro 11, Photoshop CS6, Illustrator CS6, and InDesign CS6. InDesign CS6 (32 bit) really can't run on any OS past macOS High Sierra and it becomes completely bricked under MacOS Catalina. So, the Late 2013 Mac Pro is a used Mac in my future. I could even settle for the Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 3.7 (Late 2013) and be quite happy with it's performance with my CS6 apps.
You should try mining Chia Coin with that 12 core /24 thread it could be a winner. Plot to an external fast ssd then transfer to a large slow spinning hard drive for farming.

It’s worth also considering the new M1 Pro. A fully loaded Mac Pro may have the edge with some codecs, but the M1 Pro will be much quicker with ProRes and H.264/H.265. We did a big showdown test episode recently with Resolve. Doesn’t include the Mac Pro, but we did include an M1 Mini, so it may help you get a better idea.
hello, I found it very useful to follow his videos on Mac Pro 6.1, in fact today I have the opportunity to buy one at a good price with maximum performance (2.7ghz 12 core- 64 gb ram -1tb ssd -AMD d700 X 2) , I need to work with some software that runs exclusively on windows (SolidWorks, Autocad mechanical, Mastercam) My idea was to install windows via bootcamp and work when necessary. In your experience, is this a good idea? Will the programs I mentioned have good performance, fluidity and stability? Thanks.! Octavius
I don’t have any specific experience with those apps, but I found Bootcamp works fine (apart from eGPU). Graphics performance can be better in Windows due to its better handling of CrossfireX. Enjoy the new machine!
You’re comparing it to the M1 Mini... but what about the Intel Mini? Thunderbolt 3, 6 core processors, 64GB of RAM. Yes, the GPU is weaker but you can use an eGPU over TB3. Comparable prices to a user base Mac Pro 2013 but much better performance. The Mac Pro 2013 was also renowned for GPU faults due to heat issues.
The Intel Mini is a good shout, especially with an eGPU. I didn’t include anything other than the M1, because it would have made the video too long, and since I’d only recommend the 8-core, 10-core or 12-core CPUs, the Intel Mini is behind those for multi-threaded performance. As far as I recall, it was the D700 models that had issues, and Apple did a free replacement programme for the faulty ones.
I replaced my Mini 2018 with a Mac Pro 2013, because the Mini ran too hot, had lot's of wake up and sleep problems with external TB3 devices and the bluetooth connection issues drove me crazy.

I am using iStat menu bar app to monitor the GPU usage. None, I repeat none of my applications use my dual GPU (D700). They all seem to use only one of them. This includes photoshop, unreal engine, maya, all adobe applications etc.. While i like this mac a lot, and I amstill using it, I desperately need proper GPU rendering. I saw videos of the new Nvida 3090.. ..a complex scene is rendered literally under 3 seconds. Something like that would take up to 1-2 hours on my Mac Pro. Apple’s answer to Nvidia’s cuda is metal. But nobody (arnold, vray etc) is really developing GPU render engine for metal... and this is my issue. Yes, maybe a GPU render (from the bigger names) will be available in 2-4 years time. But that was the promise with OpenCL based GPU render engines for the 2013 MacPro.. everyone said buy the 2013 Mac Pro, and soon there will be openCL based GPU renderes.. and nothing really happened, at least not among the big names. I genuinely hate windows, yet my next investment will be a windows machine with Nvidia. Apple thinks that professionals have years to wait. Idiocy.

Still using an early 2008 Mac Pro for music and video production. I've put some CPU, GPU and SSD upgrades in there. Eventually I'll get a new one, probably. Up till last month.... in my opinion the cheesegraters were the machines with best function/price, since they're upgradable in every aspect except for bus speed, and such. My main DAWs and video editor run smooth on the 8 core 16 thread Xeons, still. So... same argument as you've made in this video, but with one difference: The graphics card, and (argueably of lesser importantance, now NAS is affordable:) harddrives inside the machine instead on cable connectors. The GPU is upgradable on the cheesegraters. I understand your love for the desing, I feel the same about my old machine.
There are still media composers and some musicians still hanging onto an purchasing 2012 mac pros, which I find incredible. Why would anyone want to use a nearly 10 year old computer when there is much better technology available?
I am among the few who things the “trash can” Mac Pro as one of the most beautiful design I’ve seen. I would totally buy an Apple Silicon Mac re-using this chassis. With upgraded I/O of course (and TB4, etc.)
Where I live they sell these used for 1900-3000 euros, so the M1 mac mini with 16gb of ram for 1300 is a no brainer, especially since I only use Logic and Final cut pro X.
Before i watch the video i will say this: No, you shouldn't buy the Mac Pro 2013 for lots of different reasons! I have one, a 6-core with dual D700 GPU's, 64GB ram and 512GB SSD storage. I also have the 2019 Mac Pro with 16-cores, W5700X GPU with 16GB VRAM, 96GB ram and 8TB SSD storage. If you look at the M1 Mac's, they are close to beaten a 2019 12-core Mac Pro (Max tech channel) shows different apps and benchmarks. I loved the Mac Pro 2013 for what it is. But in terms of longevity, don't buy it. It was already obsolete even when i bought it! You're better off with either a high end iMac 27", one of the M1 Mac's, or just wait for the new M1X/M2 models to come out. If you have the money i think buying a Mac Pro 2019 is still okay though. Even if it is Intel.

However, because of the stress put on the computer by running multiple virtual machines at the same time and attaching portable monitors like the Pepper Jobs XtendTouch XT1610F and using the air display host, I have had to reset my NVRAM about once a month.
IMHO it's never worth it to upgrade components EXCEPT swapping an old HD for an SSD. Everything else is more trouble than its worth. If you know the hardware specs Buying a used computer upgrades everything. And, of course, right now used pc prices have been driven higher by the lockdown.
I have the D300 machine. I like it, but the GPU keeps crashing and with it the entire machine. This seems to be a known bug with the system and in combination with newer Mac OS (I currently run Big Sur). Frustratingly, Apple has so far (and probably never will) release a fix. Are you aware of this issue? Would you know of a fix?
I used to experience kernel panics that appeared to be GPU related. I did a fresh install of macOS (i.e. wiped the drive and started from scratch), and it’s been stable since. I also re-applied thermal paste to my GPUs, and made use of TG Pro to keep temperatures down in the system, but it was the reinstall that seemed to fix it for me.

Thank you 😁 I don't think anyone has called my voice "soothing" before! Apple is starting to discontinue support for the 2013 Mac Pro, and it won't be able to officially load new OS releases after Monterey... but that doesn't make it useless. It will continue to work fine for years to come, and I can't see Adobe dropping support for Intel Macs anytime soon. The 8-core with D500 will be quite similar in performance to your MacBook Pro - if you can get one for $500, I'd say that's a bargain!
Great job. I'm a user of nMP 2013 like you. IMO, 2013 MAC PRO 6.1 would be still powerful for video production in 2021 if apple allowed users of 2013 MAC PRO with egpu to fully take advantage of multiple gpu in Final Cut pro X, as Davinci resolve payed version does so. Now I'm waiting for deus ex machina who can make FCPX to drive egpu too hard.

I have an 8 cores, 64 gig, d700, 1tb ssd Trashcan since 2013, it still works flawlessly, for my purposes which are general use, somewhat occasional fcpx with neat video and izotope plugins. Even If I edit in fcpx, in 4k as prores lt transcoded, basic editing/coloring speed is fine for me unless I start to use neat video noise reduction etc, which triggers the dreaded beach ball for too many minutes... Tried the M1 but; All my fcpx plugins including Neat Video became dysfunctional and still none of them revisioned for M1! More frustrating for me; My thunderbolt 2 raids (La Cie 5big) became obsolete! Still no revision for them to be able to be connected to M1 structure... Therefore send the M1 back and got my money back... Here is my question for you, I’ll appreciate a lot if you may answer: I’m considering an 2020 27 imac, 8 cores, 16 tb 5700 xt to speed up my fcpx workflow with the heavy plugins. Is it worth to get 2020 imac with 16 gig 5700 xt instead of 2013 macpro? Tia🖖
The 27” iMac is fantastic for video editing. We have a 2019 8-core with the Vega 48 and it is very nice to work on. The 5700XT is better still. We have some videos showing the relative video editing performance of this machine. It won almost every test.
Some software compatibility issues, silence, and fits well on the shelf with the video projector. I will think about one minimal trashcan, but with a big ssd. (to replace my quad i7 imac) The only problematic things I loose are the sd card reader and the fw800 port. It('s just enough for what I will be doing on this.
It depends what you’re planning to do. 6,1 offers faster CPU and Thunderbolt. 5,1 allows for more powerful GPU. Technically you can get Thunderbolt mostly working on 5,1 with add-in cards, but it won’t be seamless.
Some have succeeded, but it’s not straightforward and it won’t work without without making use of DSDT overrides. Windows uses a 32-bit space for addressing PCIe devices, whereas the Mac is 64bit. Basically, it can’t allocate resources to the eGPU without overriding this, and so you end up with conflicts. I bought 2 in 2023 they are available for under 400 dollars. Even though I have M1 Ultra Mac Studio I always wanted a trashcan model. They work great even today. Under 400 you get 256gb ssd, 64gb ram, 6 core cpu and dual d500s.
675 gets you 8 core, 1tb ssd, 64gb ram, dual d700’s I use them for Audio work in the studio. Solid workhorse and I can run some plugins that have not transitioned but still run even modern plugins so I can load up stems etc because all plugins now load. Its fast for audio no glitches etc. connected to some UAD Apollo rack units etc..

I just bought a Mac Pro trash can 4 core, D300, 1TB and maxed out ram at 128GB for $700 locally from a company that was upgrading their system. I then upgraded the CPU to the 12 core for $80 (fairly easy task if you have the tools) and this machine works great for music production.
I bought the M1 mini but wanted to wait before switching to silicon as many plugins and audio interfaces are not compatible yet. Decided to give this one a chance to tide me over as it was a good deal and I will definitely keep this computer. I know the benchmark test are pretty low for today’s standards but in the real world im actually able to get many more tracks in Logic or Pro Tools than the M1 Mini whereas my 2018 mac mini i7 6 core was not doing well with VI like Omnisphere etc and was always at 100/102 degree Celsius with fans on full blast.
The mac pro is super silent so I can have it in the studio, the temps even recording lots of tracks in Logic stay at 53 Celsius with fan at 1000rpm max and idle is 41Celsius at 789rpm. It looks great too! I just do audio so D300 are totally fine for me.
Anyway hope that helps any musicians or anyone interested in music production!

Apple should bring back the mac pro 2013 design with a M1x or M2 chip. I love the design. It is not practical but looks fantastic on any office desk.
Given that the M-architecture creates significantly less heat, which was the only issue with these, it would be a great idea.
I got a Mac Studio in 2022, and I’m in the middle of transitioning from iMac Pro to Mac Studio. But prior to that, my “trash can” Mac Pro was a backup Mac to my iMac (in case the iMac has issues, etc). Last month, I finally decided to wipe the old Mac Pro, and re-image it as a “lab” or “test” mac, then shut it down and use it mostly as office decor in the backdrop to my office. If i need to power it back on, I can still use it-- it is surprisingly adequate for most task too if I need to use it; but the backup role will be pass to my iMac Pro.
Imagine this EXACT mac pro design with new APPLE SILICON.....best computer in the world by far!!!

Great overview. I bought my trashcan last year because I needed multicamera video editing in HD. The dual GPUs being underutilized is an issue outside of Final Cut Pro, though. In addition, Apple moving to Metal has left some open source projects like Blender in the dust.

M1 Mac Mini supports only 2 external displays.
I have 3 displays -> my choice (in 2022) was either 3500€ Mac Studio or used Mac Pro for 500€ (baseline, 4-core, D300).
I went with Mac Pro: stability, software support, etc. And I have a principle that one who has a business, should rarely buy the first generation product of anything - unless you are willing to coop with the problems and hiccups what comes with the new products.
Mine is 6 core / 12 thread with dual D500s. I run and AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 in an eGPU. Performance is still awesome (general office plus photo and some music editing). The best upgrade was adding a 1TB NVMe drive. This has dual boot into macOS 10.15 (Big Sur) and Windows 10 Pro (latest build). I can game on this rig at Ultra settings in all games. I'm keeping it.

I bought a 2013 MP this year for $900 off ebay. I had always wanted one, but could not afford when it was newer.
There were several reasons for buying this machine, which is a 8 core with 64GB DDR3 and a Firepro D700 , 1TB SSD
One was to add to my mac collection (yes, I have a room full of ancient mac hardware) and to port all my info from my 2013 27 imac, because the screen is having some issues.
The imac was running Mojave, and I didn't upgrade after that, because I had a lot of apps, games, and other items I used a lot, and they would not work on the next OS upgrade.
So I bought the 2013 MP to port over all my stuff from the 2013 imac.
So now I get the best of both worlds. On one side of the TB drive I run Mojave, and the other side the modern OS Monterey.
What a difference. Overall, I think it worked out well, because I like the newest OS and using it on a daily basis, but when I want to do some old school gaming (Unreal Tournament)
I can jump back to Mojave with no problems.
First off, my complements on this video series. I stumbled across this video by accident, and enjoyed it so much that I went back to the beginning of the series. It's refreshing to watch intelligent, well-thought-out videos that aren't full of errors or "ummm... wait..." every other word. As a long-time IT professional, I'm not a huge fan of videos that waste my time. As someone who is also visually-impaired, I *really* appreciate someone talking clearly and not just flashing a bunch of words on the screen over horrible music. I rarely subscribe to channels, but I've done so in this case.
Now that the compliments are out of the way: I bought a 2013 Mac Pro a couple of weeks ago to sit next to my M1 Mini. (Oddly enough, connected to a 32" 4K Dell monitor, which I find to be a hilarious coincidence.) Why? Well, the M1 Mini replaced my 2018 i7, and while it's insanely fast and fun to use, one of the things I do both professionally and personally is run a bunch of VMs. My original plan was to build an AMD-based mini server, but one day my spouse (bless her soul!) suggested looking at a Mac, partly because the assistive tools work so well for me. But what to get? Not another Mini, and I don't want an iMac, as I have a monitor that works well for me. And, face it, the 2019 Mac Pro is drool-worthy, but rather pricy.
Then I remembered the 2013 Pro. I had one on my desk a few years back when I worked for an arts organization, and I liked it. I've a fondness for "misunderstood" Macs; I still own a number of G4 Cubes. Face it, the trashcan is pretty. With a 12-core Xeon, 128G RAM, and a 1T SSD, it's also a decent machine for virtualization. Ideal? No. But much more fun than yet another Linux server. Got enough of those at work, thanks. I was lucky enough to score a "new" open-box unit with the above specs and D500 graphics (plenty for my needs) for a reasonable price. A bit above my original budget, but I have no regrets. I've already beaten the hell out of it, and it's taken all the loads I can throw at it just fine. Did I mention it's pretty?
In the end, it's a reminder that shiny and new is great, but if a computer does what you need, then it's all you need.

So you mentioned styling and performance for years to come and that is why I purchased this right now. I wanted a different experience and hey, the iPhone hasn't let me down yet. But I edit only in 1080p. 46M views can't be wrong. I get it is older, but I was looking at an M1 with eGPU and $3800 plus. I got everything I needed with my current setup for $1700. Now, I will be upgrading it and referring to this video for parts and such. But I really wanted to be around $2000 and no eGPU setup plus peripherals could get me there. I knew going in this was a test of the Apple software but I have the time, cloud subscriptions, and such. The only thing that I am not crazy about is all the fonts I use and may very well lose with the switch. Thank you for this extremely well-executed video.

I'm happy with our 6,1 MacPro (12core + dual D700). Works fine for video editing with FCP. One note regarding internal SSD upgrades though. When I upgraded to Monterey, a required firmware update would not install because the installer refused to use a non Apple OEM SSD. I had to swap out my Aura Pro X2 for an Apple SSD, do the firmware update, then I could swap back to the Auro Pro X2 and complete the Monterey upgrade. Still being able to use the latest mac OS is another plue for this older Mac Pro.

I currently work with a macbook pro 2013 i5 since my mac pro 2007 is no longer in use (I do Audio and video and have an old digidesign HD3). So I believe even the basic one would be a huge improvement. M1 is still under development and I will wait 2 more years to dig into it.

I've been a Mac Pro user since I bought my first used 2007 Cheese grater model, and later upgraded to a mid 2010 model. I wanted a 2013 machine because I really liked the look and size of it, but the cost didn't make sense, because the 2010 was running so strong, and I really couldn't afford the 2013. Well, the 2010 finally gave up the ghost last year, and I found a really good buy on a used 2013. The machine I bought came with an 8 core Xeon processor, 64 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and dual D500 GPUs. I got the machine for less than $1,000, and I really love it. I run a lot of VMs for work and personal use, and this machine is great for that. I've seen a lot of videos on RUclips where people love to berate this machine, but I am happy I bought mine, and am looking forward to may yárs of use from it.
Great video once again. I was outbid on a Mac Pro (late 2013) at the last few seconds which I was annoyed about at first, but after watching this video I'm kind of relieved I was. It does the job for most users and can be upgraded, however in terms of longevity it's coming to an end. Yes, it works with Big Sur but judging by Apple's timeline in phasing out their older products, it will undoubtedly not run the latest MacOS in a few years time. Considering it's 8 years old it's had a pretty good run.
Well, this comparison between the 2013 Mac Pro and the new M1 models was great, but you left out what is probably one of the biggest advantage of the 2013 Mac Pro: its many ports for USB, monitors, audio hardware, etc. In this regard, it is a real workstation computer, while the M1 models are not (they even lack ports, actually).

@@Soy.danielreyes I bought it already. I did have to update the processor and RAM but it was well worth it. It's capable of so much when it comes to music. What I like (especially after I updated the Processor), it freed up system resources that I was able to redistribute to my music instruments. I was able to have over 25 different layers of musical instruments w/effects operating at the same time. Truly is a great system to produce if you are on a budget. I am sure some would say, just get new laptop with an M1 processor. But I like having MAC Pro. As for its graphics card, if you plan to get into graphic design, get a eGPU if you go this route. But for music, definitely put money into putting in the best Intel Xeon this system can use and use the rest of your budget in RAM and SSD. Just my opinion and suggestion.

Just want to say I big thank you, I came across this video by chance and am now a firm subscriber. I love my 8 core D700 Trashcan and as a Sound Editor and Photographer it still rips through stuff but has been misbehaving recently and I was at my wits end. The video encouraged me to redouble my efforts and after a clean reinstall I finally got it back. And thanks for the tip about the Fan app. Looking forward to keeping it going now at least until a M1X Mini Pro comes along.

So on this platform. It is eerily similar to the chapters in the seek bar. I thought to myself, man that is cool when I saw it. But it just seems like more work. I understand the how-to, but I am too concerned with knocking out content.
I've had this trashcan back in 2013 and used it till 2015 and then I've switched to Windows platform. My model was 8-core with D700s. I was a good computer but exceptionally overpriced and doing casual work it wasn't any faster than my 2011 MacBook Pro 17. There were (and still) very few apps that could take advantage of 8 cores. I found myself using my MBP much more so I eventually sold my trashcan and replaced it with a Windows machine for work and gaming. I tried running games on my Trashcan under Windows but the ran slow (even though the crossfire only worked in Windows) The most beautiful thing about it was quietness and the looks but what many people don't realize once you put the thing on a table and hook up all the stuff (and there's a lot cause it doesn't have much storage and ports!) it doesn't look that pretty anymore with all sorts of adapters and cables sticking out of it. Apple even made the ports light up once you rotate the computer but with that cables sticking out you couldn't turn it easily. So on a paper it was a beautiful design but not so well thought out and practical.
I still don´t get the complaints about this working monster. I have one running Big Sur with 32GB RAM. For daily stuff and some basic video editing, it´s fabulous. And I can´t complain about how it handles my Lightroom tasks. And besides of that....it simply looks great! :)
Still loving mine and I still need to get Final Cut Pro so I can enjoy the 12 cores.. or DaVinci... But still happy with my 12 core I purchased in 2020.
What has been your use-case so far?
I personally prefer the editing experience of using Final Cut, though I think at this point DaVinci is technologically superior. But rendering speed is second to working speed and I prefer working with FCP

You should get Davinci full version It does a better job when it comes to using both graphics card
Still rocking my 11 year old MP5,1. Upgraded almost any upgradable item over the past years. 6 core CPU, Radeon RX 5600 XT, 24 GB ram, nvme, ssds, BT4.0 and wifiac, USB-C, USB 3.1. I’m aware that I’m not getting the most out of all the hardware, but it runs like a tank and still does the job for me.
The next thing you should buy is a Blu ray drive for it.
Great video, I sold my 2013 Mac Pro, and I am using a new M1 Mac. I think it is a pretty good improvement across-the-board, especially in connectivity having thunderbolt 3. While I love the Mac Pro for nostalgic reasons, it’s just a bit of a hassle with all of the thunderbolt 2 dongles and performance wise I prefer the M1

Ever since Mac Pro 6.1 was released I have always admired and deeply desired it. It was inaccessible to me in those years. I'm an Apple fan and I have a 2012 Mac mini, a 2014 MacBook Air as well as the entire line of iPhones, iPads, Airports and iWatch. I have seen your videos related to the Mac Pro 6.1 many times and you finished convincing me. It is a work of art. It's on the way (6 Core, 16GB RAM, 256SSD, Dual AMD 500 GPUs) and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I can give you my opinion and experience. Later I will begin to carry out all the possible upgrades. By the way, I keep my first Macbook Pro 2007 that had problems with the Nvidia GPU and stopped working. Still using my '13 Mac Pro! Waiting to see what Apple does with its next version of Mac Pro. I'm a photographer and I find this puppy still manages most of what I put to it. I still need more power for my bigger jobs as it does get tiring waiting for the system to catchup with me!
I had though about going to the newer Cheese grater but it was too expensive and really didn't offer that much for my work flows, I also like the smaller footprint of the '13 Trashcan! If the rumors are true with a smaller Mac Pro M series CPU I will likely jump to it.

I’m in music production, after the disappointment of finally seeing the price of the new max pro, after all these years on a cheese grater I caved and bought the trash can. In 2019 that meant I got a 12 core 128GB D509for 2.5k (USD). I had watched your channel for a bit which was very helpful. The cheese grater in my case had finally run its course in terms of being able to handle the required new versions of music software and Mac OS. Great overview here on the heels of the M1 release. i have been using an M1 MacMini with Logic Pro, the base model. It blows away my last Mac in every way. Its a bargain, i havent even come close to limits with plugins and track numbers.

I have to agree the Mac Pro 2013 is an excellent machine and especially for a music production: super-quiet, server-like stability, enormous RAM and that lovable design - makes it still valuable in 2021 - at least on my desk. ☺️.. .. surely the new macs may offer a good competition, but - true is: 2013 Mac Pro’s have that beautiful design that may prevail for a little longer. :).

I use it for music production and I have many periferias attached to my 2013 Mac. I don’t see it possible with any of the M1 machines.
I traded my 6-core trash can for my 2nd Mini M1 w/16GB RAM. I only had to pay $20 difference so why not? I do like the look of the trash can but gotta let it go while it still is worth something.

I love the Mac Pro 2013 that I now have 3 of these Mako Reactors - I use if for my Architectural Design Business, 3D rendering, Graphic Design, Photography and my RUclips Channel Spitting out 1080p Videos. Absolutely amazing machine that I don't need any other. and Yes I use all 3 Mac Pros when Networking Rendering its my own little render farm.

Just for whose interested, I have a fully maxed out Mac Pro 2013 trashcan, and just bought the new M1 MacBookAir M1 (with SSD of 512Go and 8 GPU cores). On BruceX test (FCPX), the trashcan is still 6 seconds faster. Not to bash the MBA in anyway here, don't get me wrong, it's fantastic to equal the mac pro 2013 in a so small factor laptop that is the MBA. But, we are also 8 years after, and the MP is faster.
Which one would you say is the fastest when it comes to daily tasks? Booting, opening apps, browsing, etc

2023 ... I have one of those machines. Currently have 4 monitors connected to it. I wish I could post the photo as it looks ridiculously good. It is plenty fast for what I do ... day trading, web development, some Final Cut.
Even the 2010/2012 Mac Pros still hold their ground in 2021 with decent upgrades.

I originally got the 6core in 2015 and upgraded all but the GPUs. the CPU is the 12core but 120W as opposed to 130W power. Just streaming Premiership, the CPU is around 50 degrees Celsius running Big Sur and streaming software. I recently acquired an i3 Mac Mini 2018. Running Big Sur streaming Premiership at 34 degrees and cool to touch. It is also generally snappier than the Trashcan and can run all of my Logic Pro Projects with lots of synths and plugins at around 50 degrees. The Trashcan runs them at about 60 degrees but has loads more unused CPU available than the Mini.
Been working with one of these (mid-range model) since 2014 and have loved it! I use it for PS, Logic Pro, AE, Final Cut and the performance has remained more than adequate for my needs. We've started to dip into 4k though and that might be the straw that breaks my upgrade patience!
Just buy it if you like it and need an old Mac OS. I have the 6-core and make websites and it's great for that. Easy to replace the SSD (Samsung 970 Evo Plus). Very sometimes it's freezing for 30-45 seconds. I've heard that's a problem caused by the GPU. I think we can expect the M1X around June 2021.
I have 2 Mac Pros from 2013. Still ising them for my film business. No problems.
In China, this old machine has a nickname called "Rubbish bin", cause it looks like a small rubbish bin... But it still can work, I got a Windows-10 system on it, there's no big problems, still reliable. The rubbish bin can still do some work on picture, video design, sort of creative work. Anyway, when rubbish bin is working, the white gas comes out from top, which makes it look like an odd UFO. Lolll

Thank you for this objective and informative presentation. I really appreciate the time that you have taken to explain things so clearly and in great detail. A customer of mine is a graphic artist who mainly uses Photoshop and Illustrator. He has a 2010 Mac Pro tower which we upgraded to the latest Xeon that it can handle (1 CPU only on this machine), added extra RAM for a total of 96GB and replaced the HD with an SSD. We also updated the firmware so that he could install High Sierra, but that's as far as it goes. It has two video cards - the original AMD 5770 with 1GB of VRAM and an NVIDIA GeForce with 2GB of VRAM. He has 3 large monitors connected and a large Wacom drawing display. It's a great setup.
However, because he needs to update Photoshop and Illustrator to either newer versions or the latest version, he needs MacOS Catalina at a minimum. He therefore decided to purchase a Mac Pro 2013 recently. It has 64GB RAM running at 1066Mhz, the 12-core CPU running at 2.7Ghz, a 500GB Apple SSD and the dual D700 GPUs. On paper this all looks very impressive, and I do admit that the design is aesthetically pleasing. In practice however, this computer is a complete headache.
1st) It only has one HDMI port. With dual video cards that are reasonably powerful, it's only logical that this computer should be designed to handle 2 or more monitors with ease. Especially if the target customers are people who use Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and other editing software. Such people use multiple monitors not as a luxury, but because they need to in order to manage their workflow properly. This computer should have at least 4 x HDMI or DSP, or a combination of the two and everything should be easily plugable. According to Apple's own specs: 3 x dual-cable 5K displays OR Six Thunderbolt displays. Yeah, OK sure - every person and every business will go out and purchase Apple's nice but ridiculously overpriced monitors (not). So instead of giving the user the freedom to purchase whichever monitor they find suitable (be it for budgetary or other technical reasons), Apple forces them into a limited option which revolves around purchasing another Apple product. All this being said, it is possible to connect a maximum of 3 non-Apple monitors - but you have to jump through f'ing hoops to get them to work with adapters. It's pathetically asinine and idiotic (something that is obviously part of the culture at Apple). Hence, we can only connect three of my customer's monitors - one being the Wacom unit.
2nd) I like the fact that the transfer rate for Thunderbolt is so fast. With TB2 on the Mac Pro 2013 it's 10GB/s throughput vs. the 2.5Gbps that the onboard USB3 is capable of. With TB3 it is 20Gbps and TB4 is 40Gbps. This of course is amazing, along with the fact that you can daisy-chain external peripherals. But, the fact of the matter is that the implementation within the consumer product industry is still rather small in 2022. Most non-Apple computers don't have TB and the small selection of external peripherals are expensive or incredibly expensive - which makes the cost to benefit ratio absurd. For the most part there isn't must useful hardware out there that the vast majority of people and businesses require. Every single AMD powered computer does not have TB on the MoBo, and that's about 36% of the computers out there according to latest statistics. Considering that USB 3.2 has speeds up to 20Gbps and USB4 can go up to 40Gbps, it makes no sense to even bother with TB for the most part. People don't need to chuck out their USB2 or USB3.x peripherals just because a higher standard is introduced.
3rd) Non-modular and proprietary layout that limits upgradeability in general. The biggest issue being the GPU from what I have seen and heard. This is really at the core of the disdain that people have for this computer. And instead of replacing it with a another modular unit within a (for Apple) reasonable price range, Apple comes back with the insult that starts at USD $6k and goes up to USD $53k.
4th) Upgrading beyond the 64GB of RAM can reduce the RAM clock speed by half. Several sources on the Internet indicated that a module with 1866Mhz will be reduced to 800Mhz. So if you beef it up to 128GB you lose half the speed. If you get the right PC motherboard and CPU combo you can avoid this.
When you put this all together it is no surprise that so many people either jumped over to Windows (reluctantly) or had someone build them a Hackintosh. From my experience thus far, the Mac Pro 2013 is a complete waste of money. My customer paid CAD $1250 for this used computer and I could have built a much, much better Hackintosh for the same amount of money with brand new parts. I also reluctantly recommend Windows, but what are people supposed to do? Things are not only idiotically asinine and complicated, but now also completely unaffordable to most individuals and businesses alike. It's only a minority of people and businesses who are willing to put up with Apple's BS and have the funds to afford their ridiculously overpriced hardware.

In response to your points:
1. You do not have to buy an expensive Thunderbolt display. All the Thunderbolt ports on the 2013 Mac Pro are DisplayPort compatible, so you just need mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort (or HDMI cables, or whatever the monitor needs). I personally wouldn't use the onboard HDMI for anything as it is limited to 30Hz at 4K.
2. Thunderbolt 2 is 20Gbps not 10, and both TB3 and TB4 are 40Gbps. Most decent Intel Windows machines are now shipping with TB4 - even my new Surface Pro has Thunderbolt 4.
USB 3.2 can only achieve 20Gbps with the 2x2 standard, which has even less devices out there than Thunderbolt.
The USB4 standard is still 10Gbps, but the USB4 standard incorporates Thunderbolt 3 and it is this which is capable of 40Gbps speeds with Thunderbolt devices. USB devices are limited to 10Gbps (or 20 with 2x2).
There are solutions available for Thunderbolt on AMD machines, though it does depend on motherboard manufacturer. Certainly, Lenovo do offer one for my Threadripper powered workstation. TB4 is becoming more common for Ryzen and Threadripper (www.windowscentral.com/can-you-use-thunderbolt-3-amd-ryzen-pc).
3. Used GPU cards for the 2013 Mac Pro are starting to become available on eBay at sub-$1,000 prices, which is still very expensive. It is the big failing of the 2013 Mac Pro, and those who need serious graphics performance will need to go eGPU or look elsewhere. The 2013 Mac Pro is better suited to those who need VMs and other features that are well-suited to Xeon chips. AFAIK Apple doesn't sell any replacement GPU cards for the 2013 Mac Pro - the prices you mention are cards for the 2019 Mac Pro.
4. I always recommend 64GB max for this very reason. The 2013 Mac Pro officially only supports 64GB - Apple has always stated that.
I've just bought one in 2021! I need something with a lot of cores, but I don't want an iMac & can't justify the price of an iMac Pro or new Mac Pro. I've tried an i5 Mac Mini, but thought it was going to melt due to the 6 cores and Intel architecture.
My everyday machine is an M1 Air, but I need something to act as a wired desktop for VMs & server. I don't need any internal expansion & the cheese-grater Mac Pros won't run the software I need due to their age. The M1 machines won't work with the majority of my VMs at the moment.
Prices do seem to have stabilised for these, so you either pay the money up front for a used, 6/8/12 core model with 512GB/1TB SSD and 32/64GB RAM, or you buy a base model (of which there are loads) and spend the money on the upgrades yourself.
It looks like you can get a quite high spec vase in 2022 for under $1500

Great video. I'm trying to decide between waiting for the new M1X Macbook Pros, or upgrading my 2013 Mac Pro 8-Core with an more RAM and an EGPU. My internal gfx card has failed for the fourth time (I get render glitches on every export done with the GPU), so I'm pretty desperate for a solution. I assume that upgrading my current system would be far cheaper than paying for a kitted out new MacBook pro 16. What are your thoughts?
Depends on whether you can find a decent GPU at the right price, but I’d expect it would be cheaper… but then with the new MacBook Pro you’d be getting a lot more than just a decent GPU. I don’t think I could recommend an investment into the Trashcan at this point.

I installed the upgrade processor and my Mac pro is not bricked. I’ll try to reinstall the old one and try to resuscitate it.
I'm sticking with my last perpetual licensed Adobe CS6 apps, Acrobat Pro 11, Photoshop CS6, Illustrator CS6, and InDesign CS6. InDesign CS6 (32 bit) really can't run on any OS past macOS High Sierra and it becomes completely bricked under MacOS Catalina. So, the Late 2013 Mac Pro is a used Mac in my future. I could even settle for the Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 3.7 (Late 2013) and be quite happy with it's performance with my CS6 apps.
You should try mining Chia Coin with that 12 core /24 thread it could be a winner. Plot to an external fast ssd then transfer to a large slow spinning hard drive for farming.

It’s worth also considering the new M1 Pro. A fully loaded Mac Pro may have the edge with some codecs, but the M1 Pro will be much quicker with ProRes and H.264/H.265. We did a big showdown test episode recently with Resolve. Doesn’t include the Mac Pro, but we did include an M1 Mini, so it may help you get a better idea.
hello, I found it very useful to follow his videos on Mac Pro 6.1, in fact today I have the opportunity to buy one at a good price with maximum performance (2.7ghz 12 core- 64 gb ram -1tb ssd -AMD d700 X 2) , I need to work with some software that runs exclusively on windows (SolidWorks, Autocad mechanical, Mastercam) My idea was to install windows via bootcamp and work when necessary.
In your experience, is this a good idea?
Will the programs I mentioned have good performance, fluidity and stability?

I don’t have any specific experience with those apps, but I found Bootcamp works fine (apart from eGPU). Graphics performance can be better in Windows due to its better handling of CrossfireX. Enjoy the new machine!
You’re comparing it to the M1 Mini... but what about the Intel Mini? Thunderbolt 3, 6 core processors, 64GB of RAM. Yes, the GPU is weaker but you can use an eGPU over TB3. Comparable prices to a user base Mac Pro 2013 but much better performance. The Mac Pro 2013 was also renowned for GPU faults due to heat issues.
The Intel Mini is a good shout, especially with an eGPU. I didn’t include anything other than the M1, because it would have made the video too long, and since I’d only recommend the 8-core, 10-core or 12-core CPUs, the Intel Mini is behind those for multi-threaded performance. As far as I recall, it was the D700 models that had issues, and Apple did a free replacement programme for the faulty ones.
I replaced my Mini 2018 with a Mac Pro 2013, because the Mini ran too hot, had lot's of wake up and sleep problems with external TB3 devices and the bluetooth connection issues drove me crazy.
@@ConstantGeekery Officially, yes it was the D700 units that had the issue, but I recall plenty of threads and posts on Macrumors from owners of the D500 and D300 with issues.
I am using iStat menu bar app to monitor the GPU usage. None, I repeat none of my applications use my dual GPU (D700). They all seem to use only one of them. This includes photoshop, unreal engine, maya, all adobe applications etc.. While i like this mac a lot, and I amstill using it, I desperately need proper GPU rendering.
I saw videos of the new Nvida 3090.. ..a complex scene is rendered literally under 3 seconds. Something like that would take up to 1-2 hours on my Mac Pro. Apple’s answer to Nvidia’s cuda is metal. But nobody (arnold, vray etc) is really developing GPU render engine for metal...
and this is my issue. Yes, maybe a GPU render (from the bigger names) will be available in 2-4 years time. But that was the promise with OpenCL based GPU render engines for the 2013 MacPro.. everyone said buy the 2013 Mac Pro, and soon there will be openCL based GPU renderes.. and nothing really happened, at least not among the big names.
I genuinely hate windows, yet my next investment will be a windows machine with Nvidia. Apple thinks that professionals have years to wait. Idiocy.

Still using an early 2008 Mac Pro for music and video production. I've put some CPU, GPU and SSD upgrades in there.
Eventually I'll get a new one, probably. Up till last month.... in my opinion the cheesegraters were the machines with best function/price, since they're upgradable in every aspect except for bus speed, and such. My main DAWs and video editor run smooth on the 8 core 16 thread Xeons, still. So... same argument as you've made in this video, but with one difference: The graphics card, and (argueably of lesser importantance, now NAS is affordable:) harddrives inside the machine instead on cable connectors. The GPU is upgradable on the cheesegraters. I understand your love for the desing, I feel the same about my old machine.
There are still media composers and some musicians still hanging onto an purchasing 2012 mac pros, which I find incredible. Why would anyone want to use a nearly 10 year old computer when there is much better technology available?

I thought they were planning to drop it from the next OS, but I could be wrong on that. Can't remember where I read it.
I am among the few who things the “trash can” Mac Pro as one of the most beautiful design I’ve seen. I would totally buy an Apple Silicon Mac re-using this chassis. With upgraded I/O of course (and TB4, etc.)
Btw now you can add thunderbolt cards to 5,1’s!

Where I live they sell these used for 1900-3000 euros, so the M1 mac mini with 16gb of ram for 1300 is a no brainer, especially since I only use Logic and Final cut pro X.

Before i watch the video i will say this: No, you shouldn't buy the Mac Pro 2013 for lots of different reasons! I have one, a 6-core with dual D700 GPU's, 64GB ram and 512GB SSD storage. I also have the 2019 Mac Pro with 16-cores, W5700X GPU with 16GB VRAM, 96GB ram and 8TB SSD storage. If you look at the M1 Mac's, they are close to beaten a 2019 12-core Mac Pro (Max tech channel) shows different apps and benchmarks. I loved the Mac Pro 2013 for what it is. But in terms of longevity, don't buy it. It was already obsolete even when i bought it! You're better off with either a high end iMac 27", one of the M1 Mac's, or just wait for the new M1X/M2 models to come out. If you have the money i think buying a Mac Pro 2019 is still okay though. Even if it is Intel.

Which monitor did you use with your L2013 ? Any good 10 bit 27” or 32” displays out there that work with this machine? (Mine uses the D700 graphics)
I used a 32” Dell UltraSharp 4K. Worked fine with DisplayPort. HDMI is of course limited to 30Hz at 4K resolution.

Great post, thanks... 75% of my work is done on virtual machines using VM Fusion on my 2013 Mac Pro. I love running multiple Linux distros at the same time. Can get plenty of work done.

However, because of the stress put on the computer by running multiple virtual machines at the same time and attaching portable monitors like the Pepper Jobs XtendTouch XT1610F and using the air display host, I have had to reset my NVRAM about once a month.
IMHO it's never worth it to upgrade components EXCEPT swapping an old HD for an SSD. Everything else is more trouble than its worth.
If you know the hardware specs Buying a used computer upgrades everything. And, of course, right now used pc prices have been driven higher by the lockdown.
I have the D300 machine. I like it, but the GPU keeps crashing and with it the entire machine. This seems to be a known bug with the system and in combination with newer Mac OS (I currently run Big Sur).
Frustratingly, Apple has so far (and probably never will) release a fix.
Are you aware of this issue? Would you know of a fix?
I used to experience kernel panics that appeared to be GPU related. I did a fresh install of macOS (i.e. wiped the drive and started from scratch), and it’s been stable since. I also re-applied thermal paste to my GPUs, and made use of TG Pro to keep temperatures down in the system, but it was the reinstall that seemed to fix it for me.
I have 2019 MacBook Pro Ii9 2.4 GHz 64gb ram 8gb graphics card , I mostly use it as a desktop computer but sometimes I take it with me but mostly is desktop, Sometimes I run multiple applications , I still want to keep the portability of my MacBook Pro, Was considering Mac Pro 2013 8 core with 64 GB of RAM D500 card , and to upgrade to faster SSD , Because I would like to take the load and stress from MacBook Pro and distributed to two different machines when I run multiple software , Is that better option Since it is 2022 I’m wondering how much Adobe and apple will support 2013 Mac Pro, I use it mostly for graphic design and photo editing, Starting to learn , Here in US I’ve seen that particular model of Mac Pro 8 core D500 as low as $500, You have one of the best voices on any RUclips channel it’s very calming and soothing yet to the point and professional, Greetings from Eastern European living in Texas

Apple is starting to discontinue support for the 2013 Mac Pro, and it won't be able to officially load new OS releases after Monterey... but that doesn't make it useless. It will continue to work fine for years to come, and I can't see Adobe dropping support for Intel Macs anytime soon.
The 8-core with D500 will be quite similar in performance to your MacBook Pro - if you can get one for $500, I'd say that's a bargain!
Great job. I'm a user of nMP 2013 like you. IMO, 2013 MAC PRO 6.1 would be still powerful for video production in 2021 if apple allowed users of 2013 MAC PRO with egpu to fully take advantage of multiple gpu in Final Cut pro X, as Davinci resolve payed version does so. Now I'm waiting for deus ex machina who can make FCPX to drive egpu too hard.

I have an 8 cores, 64 gig, d700, 1tb ssd Trashcan since 2013, it still works flawlessly, for my purposes which are general use, somewhat occasional fcpx with neat video and izotope plugins.
Even If I edit in fcpx, in 4k as prores lt transcoded, basic editing/coloring speed is fine for me unless I start to use neat video noise reduction etc, which triggers the dreaded beach ball for too many minutes...
Tried the M1 but;
All my fcpx plugins including Neat Video became dysfunctional and still none of them revisioned for M1!
More frustrating for me; My thunderbolt 2 raids (La Cie 5big) became obsolete! Still no revision for them to be able to be connected to M1 structure...
Therefore send the M1 back and got my money back...

The 27” iMac is fantastic for video editing. We have a 2019 8-core with the Vega 48 and it is very nice to work on. The 5700XT is better still. We have some videos showing the relative video editing performance of this machine. It won almost every test.

Some software compatibility issues, silence, and fits well on the shelf with the video projector. I will think about one minimal trashcan, but with a big ssd. (to replace my quad i7 imac) The only problematic things I loose are the sd card reader and the fw800 port. It('s just enough for what I will be doing on this.
So, currently it is better to choose, upgrade and use the Mac Pro 5,1 2012 or the 6,1 2013?
It depends what you’re planning to do. 6,1 offers faster CPU and Thunderbolt. 5,1 allows for more powerful GPU. Technically you can get Thunderbolt mostly working on 5,1 with add-in cards, but it won’t be seamless.

Is it possible to make a EGPU to work with the 2013 Mac Pro in boot camp?
Some have succeeded, but it’s not straightforward and it won’t work without without making use of DSDT overrides. Windows uses a 32-bit space for addressing PCIe devices, whereas the Mac is 64bit. Basically, it can’t allocate resources to the eGPU without overriding this, and so you end up with conflicts.
