As someone who works in advertising, it's not only the marketing team of Infinity that messed up. For this "ad" to be published, there's also a creative agency involved, so imagine how a "creative" team worked together to come up with this, also the creative director approved it, then Infinity marketing team thought it was good enough for them to show it to their leadership. A LOT of people thought this was ok before it even was sent for publishing. Shame on all of them.

^Thissssss. (Although tbf, I don't think most people here know the difference between advertising and marketing and assume they're synonymous. >.>)
I kind of like the irreverance of the ad though. It mocks "luxury" car brands that often use classical music to push the idea of class and quality. I just think they didn't need the kids and could have just had the lady watching her kid's soccer game or something, get confused by the music, turn around and see like, amateur adult orchestra in the park.

THIS. Coming from someone who is in the creative field, I also can’t believe they got it approved on all levels from ideation, storyboarding, producing and fliming it!! I feel so badly represented knowing how much research always goes into the creative process, and can’t believe nobody thought this was a bad idea.

Let's be honest. We all know that some exec at Nissan had a bad time at their kid's recital, and decided that it would make a good commercial. The agency's people, who likely spent a lot of time storyboarding and pitching other ideas, couldn't convince Nissan to go with another, better idea, so this commercial was made instead.

The big issue, to me, is that it pushes the “musicians are only valuable when they play perfectly” ideology. The idea that beginners are annoying and shouldn’t practice when people are around. It puts the musician in a perfectionist attitude, where nothing is good enough and casual practicing becomes unnecessarily stressful, because they’re worried someone will hear them messing up.

Exactly this! People of all ages are afraid to learn an instrument because they think they'll be mocked like the kids in this ad. Many who do try to learn give up because they can't recognize their own progress. They don't understand the steps between raw beginner and seasoned professional (or even just accomplished amateur) and how long the journey can take.

The only thing she wants is a moment of quietness. All of a sudden, she is a terrible person and doesn't deserve to be a mom. Really?
When children bitching about how their parents not being supportive enough, do they show any sympathy for them? It's tiresome to see so many self-righteous "musicians" demanding parents to be saints or they will blame all the failure on them. Feel sorry for those parents.

(Update: I wanna really clarify that I think kids are mostly hilarious, and I'm interested enough in how their brains work to study developmental cognition.)
      1. They'll repeat the same thing over and over and over, because they think it's cool or funny or even just fun to say. Some kids are even more likely to repeat it if they can tell it annoys you, because they like getting a reaction of any kind.
      2. Kids can be gross - so can adults actually, but it's very common for kids who haven't learned otherwise yet.
      3. Kids often are a little too astute and ask questions that basically roast you, lol. Like asking a parent or other adult "why does it seem like you don't have any friends?"
      4. Personally, a lot of middle school kids annoy me, because many of them only do things to follow trends so they can fit in, and then make fun of other people for not knowing the one popular dance that's trending on TikTok or whatever (no, I don't hate TikTok either, but the trends can be too much). So yeah, give yourself the time to do what you love. Just wanting to be a musician is enough to earn you the right to try. (And feeling like you're failing doesn't mean you should stop! It takes many tries and hours of practice to learn to do it well.) Sorry for all the discouragement you faced. You can do it, internet stranger!

I find myself always asking the adults for kindness before every studio recital every year. People, a little bit of kindness and love goes a LONG way, and just like I don’t try to sell cars because I am a piano teacher, people who don’t know how hard it is to learn to play a music instrument and how brave children are to play in public, should just stay quiet and not mock them. It shows that a company is clearly insensitive to children all in the name of selling a car. Kids already have enough peer pressure when it comes to groups in schools: jocks vs music geeks, etc. Why not just show that you have no value for anyone with music capabilities and give a bully yet another reason to bully? Those instructors worked hard to help the kids find their passion for music and inspire new works of art. It was such a beautiful thing. To be honest. What they said about parents blocking out the noise being incredibly discouraging to children resonates a lot with me.
I used to play clarinet and the main reason why I stopped is because even when I played in my room with the door closed, I would get yelled at whenever I practiced. Then, I was kicked out (of my own room) to the basement. Where I had nowhere to sit and did not have anywhere to set down my music. With time I found that, the only time I could practice was when nobody was home. So what was the point?
So, sadly, although lowering the self-esteem of children might not be their end goal... I think there are many parents that can probably relate to this ad. At least I know that mine did.

As someone working in marketing, whatever (untrained and probably overworked) team was behind this ad was likely targeting an audience that is disconnected from the classical music scene altogether (probably wanted to parody traffic horns or something), and when placed in a commercial break between shows, it will probably gather a few mindless laughs (which it intended to do, probably). Sensitivity is something truly missing from the marketing industry and I kid you not, the copies we get for some more sensitive issues (like mental health) are so horrible that we have to send those back to the drawing board very often. This Infinity ad was in poor taste, no two ways about that! It’s lazy and completely disregards the feelings of those audience that the brand is not targeting. Ohhh, let me introduce you to my mother, who told me every time I picked up the violin that I sounded like I was murdering the cat, or who said I was completely tone-deaf and that I "couldn't hold a note if it had a handle on it" every. single. time. I opened my mouth to sing. And this is why I stopped learning the violin at 13, and I didn't sing with anyone else in the house with me until the last couple of years. Before that, I refused to even listen to myself singing because I didn't want to hear how godawful I must be to hear that so much. When I finally did because my friend talked me into duetting with them on an app, and promised that she wouldn't ridicule me for how bad I was... only THEN did I realise I'm NOT actually tone deaf. I'm not even that bad at singing. I'm not great, of course, because I don't practice much, and I sure as hell never got lessons, but I spent more than three decades convinced that I was so bad that nobody should ever hear me sing. I'm in my mid-forties now. I regret giving up on the violin, though I would never have been that great and I doubt I would have been able to move much past where I was (grade 5). I still don't sing in front of anyone, but I can put my headphones on and sing as long as nobody else mentions that they can hear me. And that still sucks. I want to feel free to sing and, well, I guess I'm still working on that.

This was meant to be a joke, some might see it offensive but some think this is hilarious, it's the same thing when Brett or Eddy make a joke about other instruments. People can get offended by almost everything, you can never please everyone.
Besides, if you don't like it just don't watch it, it's that simple. If you're concerned about the young musicians in the video, they must've been told about this since they're actors and being paid. If you're concerned that it might affect young musicians with low self-esteem, then they probably shouldn't play music anyway if they're affected by an ads. (small, underfunded, rural public school. and a lot of those kids had never picked up an instrument prior to that year's music class.) so it's entirely possible the kids were in on the joke; I know I would have been, as a burgeoning (and now recovering) music snob.
but even I knew, as a kid who was pretty consistently unaware of social cues, that YOU CAN'T LET ON THAT YOU DIDN'T LIKE IT, that would be incredibly cruel to the performers. pretending a kid's school band is good is like... the social equivalent of resisting the urge to go up to a child and tell them santa isn't real. like... it's the truth but why would you feel the need to be such a jerk?

Ok so at least one person in these comments has shared my experience! And yes! That is the integral part, you can't make it obvious that you thought it was bad. The only parts that bother me about this is that it is clearly the actual performance instead of a rehearsal and that you can see the mom block it out in front of the kid. I personally wouldn't have cared if my parent put in some earplugs while I was practicing in the house when I first started because I know it was bad, I wouldn't have wanted to listen while lounging in the house either. The important part however, is that they always came and paid attention to my concerts and they never discouraged me or my ability to play. I think that's the most important part, if you don't like the way it sounded, you still tell them they did well and encourage them to keep going and get better.

Advertisements are one of the places where these ideas are most prevalent, the infinity ad is linking people who can afford this expensive new car with people who listen to orchestras. I feel the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra missed the mark a bit by having the director or whoever he is stepping out of an expensive car, but I guess that's not what they intended to comment on, though they should have taken the opportunity to do so as breaking down the elitist association is essential to drawing in a new audience for orchestras.

all i can think about is the violas joke this channel and their audiences like to make. I don't play viola, but it would be unthinkable for viola players not to associate the two scenarios. I don't think this ad is that much of a big deal, if someone sounds bad, I would want to block off their playing too. Though I can understand the other points that twosets were saying, especially for musician children who need encouragement rather than disdain.

i remember when i was younger i was very passionate about playing the recorder. whenever i was practicing, my parents would try everything to block the sounds out. vacuuming, drilling, or even leaving the house. whenever i asked them if they'd like to listen to me they always answered they were busy. they discouraged me so much that in the end i quit playing. so as you said, behavior like shown in the ad can really hurt and discourage young kids.

3:02 As someone who has been paid to an extra in a movie, you have zero idea what your role is until they start shooting. You don’t get a copy of the script or even a synopsis. I’m sure the director, producer, + all the main actors (with speaking lines) know what their roles are within the scene/greater film etc. but usually extras don’t get much explanation. Once I was cast as a keyboardist extra to be in a band (miming) and luckily the hairstylist doing my hair decided to let me have a look at the script of my scene before shooting (I have long hair so it took a while lol). Thanks to reading the script, I find out that the “backing band” the other musicians and I were supposed to be playing (miming) were supposed to be HORRIBLE sounding because they wanted to contrast our scene with another band later in the movie 🙄
Good news though, even though I was paid for that day of work, they cut all angles of me for the scene so I did not have to be associated with being a “bad” keyboardist. So I’d say it was a win-win. That anecdote and commentary is all to say I bet the kids had zero clue they were being associated with being bad musicians because they were all (or at least most of them) likely considered just to be in-focus “extras”, which, is sad ofc, but, they all probably made at least a couple hundred bucks…. meh. Also, important to note, while I am a professional musician who has also done extra work, many extras who are hired don’t even play instruments in real life and are just hired to mime… so it’s possible some of these kids literally aren’t even amateur musicians and were just told by some person on set how to hold their instruments and mime playing.

    • @magdolyn

It absolutely would. The biggest offense in this commercial is the mom blocking out the sound of her own kid, and that's something that leads kids to quit playing. Had it been trying to block out loud music playing from speakers, that would have been a million times better, since the mom wouldn't be directly insulting the children, specifically her own.
