      @@ck3561 I've mostly had short beds, my previous truck was a Ford long bed dually with 48-gallon tank which was great. I may add a S&B tank to my current Ram short bed for extended range. I also went from a 5th wheel to a smaller travel trailer (Black Series) which changes perspective.

    Having a long bed truck and being forced to park way out in the boonies of a parking lot isn't so bad. If anything, it has a couple of advantages. For one, you get more exercise by walking back and forth. Second, you never get door dings because almost no one parks around you. As a bonus, you get to clearly look at and admire your truck as you walk away and walk back to it.

    Having a long bed means that you can carry more stuff. Coming from a short bed 3/4 ton truck to a 1 ton long bed, I feel that it tows better and you aren’t worried about your cab when you are towing a gooseneck or fifth wheel.

    Kind of funny that the tiny bed is now considered the "standard" bed! I towed a 45' gooseneck living quarter horse trailer and a 24' GN flat bed for years, never considered a short bed truck. I have never owned a short bed truck but when I had my Ram in the shop getting brakes changed, the dealership gave me a new Ram 2500 diesel crew cab short bed as a loaner for the day. My Ram 3500 dually crew cab long bed rides better than the 2500 loaner truck. A lot of positives with a long bed truck, but a negative of the Ram crew cab long bed is it's a long truck which can suck in some cities when parking.

    I miss the days when the long bed was the “standard” bed and you had to TRY to find a short bed. Now I have to TRY to find a long bed because they’re almost impossible to find. Nobody actually does truck stuff with trucks anymore. They just want to look like they do truck stuff when they’re dropping the kids off at school.
    Then there’s me, spending $8,000 to have my Mega Cab Ram dually converted to a long bed because I love the mega cab, but a soccer mom truck bed doesn’t haul enough crap. I don’t care how long it is.

    Great video in pointing out the advantages/disadvantages of each. I had a true short bed (6') with a sliding 5th wheel hitch that I rarely needed to use as long as I paid attention to what I was doing. My next truck was a long bed, but the inconvenience of parking and maneuverability far outweighed the extra cab-to-trailer clearance I gained. I now went back to a "standard" bed which is now 6.75' and got rid of the slider hitch for a new BW Companion. Like you, I have no need for the extra bed length and notice no difference in towing stability when towing the same 36' trailer.

    I was kinda like you before I got my long bed Ram 3500. I have almost 4200 lb payload.
    With all the cameras on my truck, I put that truck into some unbelievable spots. Granted it won’t go everywhere I’ve found it not to be an issue.
    It rides a little bit better and I was able to put my toolbox and my aux tank in the truck. Basically the toolbox takes up the extra bed space and it’s like a short bed Ram inside the bed for me. I like having my air compressor and some basic tools with me.
    I think once you try a long bed, you won’t go back and it has a better resale value because of the commercial folks wanting that type of truck.
    My brothers big horn has over 4400 lbs payload! Only 400 lbs less than the vaunted F450.

  • @jasonkubitz9410

    I think it really comes down to how you're going to use your truck. Do you tow more than 50% of the time? Long bed. Do you daily drive your truck more than 50% of the time? Short bed. I've had both and man it's a PITA sometimes going through a drive-thru or plain ol parking in a mall parking lot with a longbed. Does it tow a lot better? Yes. Can you put more in your bed? Obviously. I've also noticed it's a lot harder making those sharp turns into a camp spot when camping at a KOA or similar with a long bed. Also, what is your parking situation at home? Can you back your trailer up into your driveway/backyard with a long bed? I live in a cul-de-sac and a long bed with a 37+ foot trailer would be challenging if doable at all. Everyone's situation is different and you should get what works for you.

    Longbed always for me. I throw a 100gal tank in the bed every time. Towing a 30' fifthwheel West Montana to gulf coast of Texas the fuel saved me more than once when I was 30 miles until empty in the middle of no where Wyoming or when I underestimated fuel burn going through passes. The reserve is always worth it for me. Toss in fuling equipment and the extra weight in the snow and it was a win win for me. Also loved the ability to shop for fuel. "oh diesel is cheaper by a few cents at this station. Great I'll take all I can get"

  • @fordmud
    @fordmud Год назад +1

    And I take one step further and get a extended cab short bed, much better turning radius, and most things I haul will just destroy a pickup bed pretty quick unless you are extremely careful loading and unloading, plus the tailgate really messed it up for loading with a forklift. So trailers are my main thing for hauling anything. To me it's like having a tractor trailer. I know the fords atleast you have to have the short bed ext cab to get the short wheelbase.

  • @matthewanderson9912

    Nice review. I think if I didn’t have to drive my truck everyday I would want a long bed over the short bed, but these new GM trucks are just huge. It’s tough getting around some places even with my standard bed as it is. A long bed would be a nightmare lol.
    But they definitely have their advantages. I think that white AT4 would just be awesome with a black weatherguard tool box in it and that’s how I would go if I went long bed. I’d get a tool box in place of a bed cover I think.
    Also I want to point out that while Ford May increase their payload pretty significantly for their long bed, GM isn’t making you compromise for getting the short bed since their GVWR is a lot higher than Fords to begin with. A 2500 GM will typically have an 11,350 GVWR for a diesel so that’s right there with Fords 350 SRW diesels. I know the GM trucks are heavier but similar optioned trucks it’s pretty close in weight.

It’s one thing if you really need it, but most people probably don’t. The standard bed is plenty big. It’s not some 5 foot short bed. My trailer weighs 12k empty and I’m rated for 18,500 towing and 3,350 payload. I’m well within all of my limits and have never had any issues. It’s already a pain to park it. Long bed here. I don't always love the extra length of the truck, but I sure do love the 8 foot box when I have shit to haul. And even a 4 door HD with a shorter bed is still a massive truck, so I'll take that extra utility and deal with the extra 18 overall length.
    However, if the bed length made the difference between indoor and outdoor parking, I'd definitely go with the shorter bed. Outdoor parking is a no-go for me.

    Have a 22 F350 long bed lariat SRW (factory 5th Wheel 19K) my only issue with my 5th wheel is I can't fully back with the tailgate down (Have to line up pin then shut tailgate) same in reverse when setting up. My 5th wheel is a Cougar 27SGS so it is a shorter length, but that is my main annoying part of having the long bed (told the short bed doesn't have this problem?) Just something for folks to consider when making a decision. Space and towing capacity is great so not a total deal breaker and yes parking can be challenging in the city ;)

  • @xgomz
    @xgomz Год назад

    Yeah, I hear ya. It also means you need another couple feet of depth in your garage if you keep your truck in your garage. My garage is 24ft deep IIRC, just enough to park my F350 and be able to walk in front of without feeling cramped.
    The biggest benefit of the LB is the payload. You get something like 6-800lbs of payload out of that length.
    But this is also one of those things that never ends. If you get a LB why not get a dually, same length, mirrors stick out the side just as much as the wheels -- get another 800-1200lbs payload over the CCLB. Honestly, personally, I'd go dually if I was going to get a LB -- with the wide front axle for that tighter turn radius (eg F450).
    I'll be sticking with the CCSB until I have no other choice.

    One thing you forgot to discuss is the gooseneck/kingpin coupler location difference. The long bed puts that location slightly forward of the rear axle and on my '23 3500 LB DRW with the B&W Companion, it distributes about 150 lbs. (out of 3000) of the pin weight to the front axle. On my friend's truck with a standard bed, the coupler location is few inches behind the centerline of the rear axle (for cab clearance) and this transfers about 400 lbs. off the front axle to the rear and actually adds 3400 to the rear axle even thought the pin weight is only 3000. With bigger trailers (13K plus) this causes rear squat, lighter steering, and combined with the shorter wheelbase it can be less stable.
    My 44', triple axle toy hauler tows like a dream behind my long bed dually. I had to borrow my friends '22 standard bed for a short 80 mile trip while I waited for my new truck and there is a VERY noticeable difference in handling, comfort and for me, even stress!

    To load a Harley Davidson Heritage which one would you choose? 🤓 and I would be pulling at the same time an Airstream Travel Trailer of 27’. Any opinion will be appreciated.

    Good video 😀 like your review of both truck let me adress the parking problem justrailt park away from other people but your going to have to walk farther away most people don't want to do that 😉 let them drive a small car I saw your truck and trailer it's starting to sqwt you could be at max of trailer weight 🫢 I also have a long bed chevy crew cab and plan to go back to dully 2024 chevy Silverado duramax and in saying that some fifth wheel trailer are starting to weigh more shure it will pull the rig but can you stop it safely in California speed limit is 55 I think in Utah 65 or 70 your trailer brakes are not going to stop at that speed trailer brakes should be disc not drum so some rig's are showing front frame damage at that speed so just saying just because the truck can tow 21 thousand pounds doesn't mean you're really can safely and for dully about 30 thousand pounds so I think I can tow about 16 or 17 dry if I go heavier have move up 5500 truck just my opinion since your new rig you need to drive long distance 500 to 1000 miles to if it works for you 😄

    I find the 4 doors make these trucks too long. Why not stick with a 2 door extended cab and the 8 foot box.

      @@ALMX5DP yeah exactly, I don’t think anyones arguing that. But id say the long bed is more for most “working” situations. 8ft sheetrock, 8ft boards, room for toolbox and fuel tank with room leftover, lots of reasons

      It does compared to JB’s GMC. But it will probably do all I need it to do. All these trucks are nice & excellent vehicles. I would be happy with any one of them. Drove a client’s new F350 KR from FL to VA for him. Great truck. It had the long bed & wasn’t any more difficult to drive than my Ram Longhorn LTD MegaCab. But I like the inside of my Ram and the Cummins. All of them have things to like & things we’d probably like to change. JB is smart to expand his channel & I like that he is bringing us new insight to all these trucks. Look forward to his Ford content & when he wises up & returns to RAM on the next gen update😊
