- 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone
-
In This Video: all time, Aretha Franklin, Beastie Boys, Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Rihanna, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Strokes, Fleetwood Mac, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Who
No matter what Rolling Stone tries to tell you, one of the *last* things they are is a music magazine.
I think that they shouldn't include greatest hits packages
It's the 2012 list, it has been updated in 2020
Love that Pet Sounds is number 2 even though it’s number one for me
the 2020 list sucks!!
they got marvin gaye whats goin on at #1 and pet sounds at #2 - are u serious???? neither one should be in any top 10
The update is and ATROCITY HORRIBLE
No
Great to see Amy Winehouse, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Moby and Hole on the list! Great album picks for them!
Wow. Very nice work putting this together.
Dark Side of the Moon should have been in the top 10. Many people consider it the greatest album ever
Yes. I was stunned.
@@ericmadeoftin8206they actually scored the Sex Pistols higher than Dark Side of the Moon. Kind of invalidates the whole list.
Yes, totally agree. Top 10.
Playlist great tufta
I like Floyd, I really do, but Dark Side is way too overrated. It has only got 3 great songs and the rest is good or average at best.
Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here only 211???!!!! That’s at LEAST top 25
Pink Floyd HIGHLY overrated
@@markfriedman5093 underrated, what are you on
So many compilations, who put this together, Alan Partridge? I'm surprised "Best of the Beatles" wasn't number one.
To be fair Hank Williams, Robert Johnson etc. didn’t really issue LPs. You then have to ask the question whether this list is about Albums or artists. The answer obviously is sometimes!
Sgt Pepper=Greatest album ever from the greatest band Beatles=TYSM! 🎶
Not remotely the best Beatles album by a wide margin, IMO.
Haha no
... it would be nice if this would be just 500 greatest studio albums ... a separate listings for compilation, soundtrack, various artists, and live albums would be even greater !!!
Yes, a lot of worthy albums would have been moved up if compilations weren't included.
At first I didn't like the idea of greatest hits or compilations but after going through it I realized without them, you leave out a lot of lifetime/ embodiment work of people who had great song over many years. Niel Diamond, Abba, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and such.
@@ericmadeoftin8206 So? Certain artists weren't around during the classic album era starting in 1964. That doesn't change the point of such a list - to highlight the best albums that were created as original works of art. Putting together a record full of previously-released singles is not an artistic statement by a musician - it is a record company creation. Your first instinct was correct.
Please explain to me how the frigging Sex Pistols scored higher than Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.
A Disgrace from the geniuses at RS
The Pistols’ NMTB was influential and represented a massive paradigm shift, whereas DSOTM was simply a great album.
I hate the Pistols, but in considering historical context, it makes sense.
@@fatman1198dsotm represented a massive paradigm shift in how albums were put together. I love the pistols, but in the long game Dsotm was greater.
@@doscwolny2221 It broke no new ground. No one started a band after they heard it. It didn’t change music. It was simply a great prog rock album.
@@fatman1198the ongoing legacy of Dsotm is massive. Punk was already in full swing when nevermind the bollocks came out.
Despite what people think AC/DC had just as big an effect on the masses at the time. The sex pistols were already riding on the coat tails.
Dsotm was innovative and had a huge affect on how sound studios, bands, artists all worked together. It up the stakes for any aspiring band or artist. The sex pistols obviously were affected that was one of their primary reasons to strip back rock.. Remember the shirt' I hate pink Floyd '. Which Johnny himself has now said was a gee up and that he loved Floyd.
Thank you for: rank in the RS list, songtitle, 3 songs and title of each album, video content, record cover and year of appearance. Great work!😊
Music is such an individual 'finger print' a list like this will always draw criticism but them try in any case. Here are 5 albums that I cherish:
Intertpol - TOTBL
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
Prine and the Revolution - Purple Rain
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
I think their greatest also means influential as well.

I'll check this out... but if YES Close to the Edge, Fragile, or The Yes Album aren't included... I'll be disappointed. Signed, (of course) a YES fan
Jann wenner never liked YES so bleep him and his BS Hall of Fame.
Great varied list; wish Frampton Comes Alive had been included.
I'm amazed, virtually every home had a copy when I was young!
Is this list a joke? Led Zeppelin IV and AC/DC Back in Black not even in the top 50 and Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon not even in the top 40? Seriously?
Screw RS. They are no longer relevant. No YES or RUSH?
Hola Man! Saludos Man.

This group the “Beatles “ were pretty good 😅
I just subbed. Great job on a very difficult list
Deep Purple..King Crimson...Yes...Slade...Frank Zappa....Tangerine Dream..Genesis..AC DC..E.L.O....Ted Nugent..Kate Bush....Nazareth...Tool..
Right with you. What about Boston, Kansas, Styx and Supertramp. So many Lou Reed and Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, and only Linda Ronstadt's greatest hits? The Clash. Elvis Costello, The Byrds, The Talking Heads...it's like everything they ever did made the list. No Welcome to My Nightmare, Queen only had one entry on the list and it was much lower than I thought it should be, no Monkees, no Pat Benatar, no Chicago, no Yes as you said, no Thick as a Brick, there was a definite bias, but it's Rolling Stone. It's just like the RnR Hall of Fame, btw, don't you love listening to Whitney Houston's rock songs. I could go on for days, but I'll stop ranting here.
And they've included a couple of Velvet Underground albums that no one knows or cares about.
@@marcsegal5123 Whitney ....O nooo..👎....S.Quatro.👍
McCartney's "Band On the Run" not even in the top 450??? How do they ever begin to explain a blunder like that?
✔️
More than half of these albums are total garbage. The list can be no better than the idiots that compiled it.
What about Avalon by Roxy Music, Dare by the Human League, The Lexicon of Love by ABC, Diva by Amnie Lennox, Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette, Duran Duran debut album
All great choices! I also think Duran Duran’s Wedding Album would’ve been suitable for this list too.
New wave was well represented here though. Elvis, Blondie, Heads, etc.
We can’t have 2000 albums in the top 500.
What impresses me is that even with all the technology, nothing beats the sensitivity of the time, that is, the 60s/70s, part of the 80s, generated a better musical culture... less media, more content.
it is truly beyond me how so many emblematic albums now included here.
it is clear that whoever created this list grew up in the 70s and his darlings are all included here.
Really, greatest hits and compilation albums. I'm up to 121 and no Yes or ELP and nothing from Europe like Nightwish, Within Temptation etc.
This is Rolling Stone’s list, and Wenner famously loathed prog.
This list is the original from 2003, it has since been updated with Marvin Gaye What's going on now in the top spot, and Pet Sounds maintaining its number 2 spot. Many albums have either moved forward in the list or back, and some have disappeared and been replaced.
Never understood how 2 albums that appear on both lists can be above or below each other. Shouldn't they be in same order?
The New lost of 2020 can't be taken for real. It is only because they think they have to include more modern and Black artists. Nothing to do with the music anymore
@@andrewschuricht6748 They did an entirely new vote with some new contributors, hence the different order of the ones that are on both lists
cause they got the white folks who only listen pop and classic rock outta the place@@patrickhauser588
Know Nr. 1. Velvet Underground and Nico
Fun to watch... Easy to see records labels buying in
Perfect! 1000 Thanks. Is there a chance to get this as a list in any readable Format?
No!
The Stranger. 52nd street ... The lamb lies down on Broadway ... The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust ... Close to The Edge ... Rock n Roll Animal ....The Dark side of The Moon ... La Solitudine ( Leo Ferre') ....Good bye yellow brick road .... Song's in theKey of life ... Ecc

Yes they do, more than Elvis Presley.
Great jobe

I understand wanting to update and diversify this list but it's still a crazy list.
Not many on this list I'd choose for my top 500 but it's all relative!
Deep Purple, ABBA, Bee Gees, Roxy Music, ELO, Boston, Nazareth, Whitesnake, Uriah Heep, Bad Company, Status Quo, Sweet, T-Rex, Roxette, Rainbow, Roy Orbison, Chris Rea, Mike Oldfield, OMD ...
It seems to be also based on Greatly influential, new sound in a different direction. ELO was one, Whitespace, not so much.
Angel-Sinful=1979
Damn, this is better list than the last one.
After all these decades, can they please make peace with Frank Zappa? No matter what are the criteria, Zappa deserves a couple of entries in that list.
I'm taking note
Note this. 🖕 I'm kidding ❤
Grosso modo depuis 20 ans que dalle...😢
ALL the greatest hits, compilations et al should be taken out of this list which as in any other list is the result of subjective opinion!
Run - D.M.C.'s self titled album is from 1984, not 1970
37:19 my favourite Pink Floyd album
Eu gostei, mas faltou Joy Division
I Beatles sono unici nel suo genere non poteva essere altrimenti immensi
Van Halen debut #415...LOL!!!!! And behind the Go-Go's.
This list is total crap
The GoGos had a huge impact. New wave, first girl band to go #1. Van Halen was rehashing generic rock- nothing new. This list should have been called greatest AND influential.
I'm a Bangles man.@@ericmadeoftin8206
@@ericmadeoftin8206Nicely done.
If no Genesis album is in the Top-100, the list cannot be taken seriously.
Two Green Day albums and not even one by Offspring. Not even one Deep Purple album. One Queen album at the bottom of the list. No Moorehead album. Dozen of Bob Dylan, Springsteen, etc. albums. What a shitty pretentious list
True Dat. Sex pistols? they CAN'T play.
Only about 10 electronic music albums in the entire Top 500 and was there any jazz records in there at all? I get that it's an opinion piece but Rolling Stone make it hard to believe that their musical vocabulary is as broad as they'd like us to think it is.
Any jazz records? Are you serious? Every fifth album was a terrible jazz record, full of "beep boop biddily bop" noise which hurts my ears and offends my sensibilities. Jazz should be banned. It's awful.
@@Blayne1973 LOL
All kinds of jazz and electronk included the fathers of it - Kraftwerk and Brian Eno. Swing and a miss, dude.
@@Blayne1973listen to Getz/Gilberto and come back
Thank you for creating this very well made compilation. If I could suggest a couple changes, add in River by Joni Mitchell and Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles. I'd say both those tracks are the best on their records.
The individual songs don't really matter - it is about the albums as a whole.
I know it really doesn't fit the list as they only added two soundtracks, but The Sound of Music was on the charts for at least 112 weeks and sold millions of copies.
It needed the update. It had #3 as Joni Mitchells album, Blue. Now it's #40.
I couldn't agree more on the Joni Mitchell case.
Clear case of Rolling Stone misogyny.

This 500 list was just good but not excellent. I would have much preferred to see more pop and rock tfom the 70s and 80s abs less rap and new wave.
Look up Rolling Stone's first list of best albums from 2003. You will like it better, I think.
@mikeymutual5489 thank you for the advice 2003 was a great year for music, another favorite was 1979 from the Billboard 500
@@randyjohnson415 OK, but I meant that you should look up Rolling Stone's *first* list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." The list came out in 2003, and has since been updated twice.

anyone heard of prog?
Angel S'/T 1975- Epic Sense of POMP Grandeur!!!!
The Beatles, dominates🎉🎉🎉
Pretty weak. In the first positions must be progressive rock: King Crimson, Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, VDGG, then the great innovators, such as Beatles, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, etc. What does pop, soul, R&B, or hip'hop music look for in the first places?!
Not really, but this is an old ranking
Frank Zappa, Tim or Jeff Buckley ?????
RS staff is full of hip hop fans. What did you expect?
What's that supposed to mean?
There's a lot of compilations on this list, and some live albums. Don't get me wrong - I own quite a few of them and listen to them and love them. Many of these collections are from artists who were the greatest of all time but didn't have the opportunity of making albums. But surely the greatest albums of all time should simply be the albums that the artist/band conceived of making themselves. My point is this - collections of songs are just that, collections, not an album conceived of in its own right. Similarly with live albums - they are collections of songs played live. For example, Rubber Soul is an album The Beatles conceived of in its own right, whereas The Beatles Number Ones is simply a collection of songs (and most probably should not be on a list of top albums). This is just my opinion. What do other people think?
i think there's too much of a biased towards, surprise surprise, rolling stones, as well as a few other english acts like the clash and the beatles. ironically, my favorite english band dire straits had brothers and arms way too low, and their self titled not even here??? easily 2 of the best albums I've ever heard
Brothers in Arms should be higher. I agree.
You’re biased the stones and Beatles are much better and more influential than mark nobbler and his 10 decent songs.
Per me non esistono grandi album, esistono album preferiti rispetto ad altri
Michael Jackson is a very good artist but the biggest selling album of all time in. The usa is eagles greatest hits 1971 1975
I'd just as soon put extreme's II, III and rhcp's blood sugar sex magic, along with genesis albums and sting's field of gold on my personal list of greatest albums of all time
As far as I'm concerned, music should require actual real genuine musical talent. So just remove every rap album from the list and that's a good start. It should be a crime against humanity that rappers get paid large sums of money for doing what requires very little of the aforementioned talent.
I disagree with your comment, while i do dislike some of the new rappers i absolutely think that illmatic and miseducation deserve to be on this list bc it takes talent to be a great rapper and telling your story in a convincing way to people some of the best lyrics in hip hop on those albums I mentioned
Pls don’t attack another genre unless you listen to it often and know where it has originated from
The list should add....and influential music. Because that's what the did here.

Being good at rapping is certainly a talent, but whether it's music is another discussion.

and? nobody is talking about sales, if you are going to justify why for you "x" album is the best of all time, justify it with arguments about the music, perhaps sales make it better? For me, it's not even the best Michael Jackson album, Off the Wall seems better to me, Thriller was already put too high, don't complain
the left tard critics at RS prefer artsy fartsy music.

This is a pretentious list, with too much punk and Bob Dillon to be taken seriously. Where is Yes, ELO, etc? And at least three or four Floyd albums should be in the top 50.
This list should be called greatest AND influential. Beatles, Elvis and Dylan were the most influential.
Too much beatles in top? Hence I agree very much

5. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
4. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
3. Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced
2. Beatles - Abbey Rd.

Amnesiac rated above In Rainbows is some stupid ass shit, I don’t trust any of these rankings
No YES or RUSH makes this list bullspit.
Why are you putting greatest hit albums on the list ? That's cheating , So why not just put every bands greatest hits album ? Makes no sense, the songs on a greatest hit albums weren't released as a package. It's not really an album in the normal sense of the word. If your gonna do that then put Neil Young's Decade compilation which should be in the top ten. It's not fair to the other artist when you take the best of one band or artist and compare that to a singe album release by another band or artist
No nettspend on the top 10 is crazy
NO ALBUMS OF TEN YEARS AFTER. I KNOW YOU HATE THEM. TELL THE TRUTH. LONG LIVE ALVIN LEE.
