By coincidence we had a local Souter (shoemaker) who was a self taught mathematician and star gazer who built an orrery in his workshop using his trade tools . The original gear wheels were carved out of boxwood and later made of metal as in a clock mechanism.
When examined buy the astronomers of the day it was found to be a perfect scale replica on the solar system as was known at that time.
His name was John Fulton (1803- 1853 ) The third and final version is on display in Kelvingrove museum Glasgow. When he became famous he moved to London but caught tuberculosis.
He is buried in his local Kirkyard 150m from his house and workshop.

Thank you for the video. I went there, as a tourist, many years ago. It is so impressive inside.

Thanks! Being involved in our local planetarium, this is much appreciated and I will share it with the director and staff. A few years ago, I built for them a model of the Antikythera device out of Lego. I have some ideas for some more astronomical timekeeping exhibits I would like to build.
