I totally agree. I am in the APS-C world. This my most often used lens. F4 is fine in most situations because most situations are not lowlight. Having the capability of a 105 zoom gives you more opportunities. All in all a great lens to add as your first lens.
For video work.. Almost all cinematographers uses F 2.8 and above. That's on a cinema camera(almost crop sensor size) so that's equal to f 4.5 etc. F1.8 or even f2.8 on a full frame is too shallow DOF and you can't see the scene.. I don't understand why people think small F value is more cinematic.. It is NOT. F 4 is a great aperture for filmmaking.. You really don't need the below.. Hollywood doesn't use :) Great video. Thanks
Thank you, David for a great concise video. My next trip is Japan. It is the first time traveling light, without my Tamron 17-28mm and Sony 200-600 G lens. Not expecting much wildlife on this trip. Your feature on the Sony 24-105 G lens convinced me to take just that one. Saves 2.5kg in my camera bag. Also, you are right with the focus area of a wide-angle f/2.8 hard to get everyone in focus and without distortion.
Hello bro! Love your videos, I’m a ZVE1 user and I owned a 20mm g. I’m planning to buy 24-105 f4 to pair it with the Zve1 but not sure if it’s a good fit. I would love to see if you can make a long form review video for that combo. 😅
Aren't most lenses adjustable? to a certain range? I have a SONY SEL85F18 I have a 1.8 lens but it goes to F22. But focusing is noisier, as it opens and closes the shutter. it's quite quiet, barely hear it, only hear it if close to the lens. I will experiment with the F stops. I guess different lenses have different range. I've not looked into lenses much. But looked into mine before I got it, it was decent so I got it as my first lens. It's not a OSS lens( stabilised lens) but a massive improvement from only using a phone and not being able to go below 1/50 shutter without using a tripod, but I can do 1/15 handheld if I keep it steady. So next thing is to look at lenses more. I hope for more second hand lenses.
I’m not sure I understand the question. You can adjust the focus range on the camera but it’s usually only recommended by the manufacturer. I have the 85mm 1.8 FE too but I don’t hear any noise when I open the shutter.
Thanks David , I'm buying my first camera and will follow your advice for my first lens . My question is ; can't you turn down the aperture on the low F primes to F-4 and get the background to focus ?
@davidmccombs great review about the 24-105 f4 lens! Quick question from a videography perspective, which one would you choose, that Sony 24-105 f4 OSS vs the new sigma 24-70 art mark 2 f2.8? The price is the same, btw I’m using a Sony zv-e1, the same camera you mentioned on the video, lol, thanks!! 🙌
I don't get it. Why would a 1.4 be a downside? You can always change it to F4 if your photo needs it. Same can not be said about the F4 if you want a dreamy portrait. Although I love my 24-105 F4. Just thought the arguments was very strange
Hi, great video. I have this lens with the a7iii. Any tips or videos for low light/street photography. Even curious on settings for astro in this. I know it's not optimal but it's what I have and I will get more prime lenses going forward. Thank you
Just have a tripod and use the bright monitor menu. You can do blue hour blends to get more detail of the night sky but it’s a lot of work. nextinphotography.com/how-to-reduce-noise-in-astrophotography-with-blue-hour-blends/
It’s a good lens, with above average performance, but it’s not particularly inspiring. As you mentioned, it’s perfect for the working event professional who needs it for occasional use for sports/night/etc.
24-105 is a great a flexible range, also f4 is useful, but sometimes your really wished you had f2.8, but then again - the lens would be really big. BUT...the disadventage of the lens is the optical stabilisation. There is NONE, or....the stabilisation is really bad, primary in Video of course, but also in photo. I wish I had checked this before getting a copy. All other stabilzed lenses for the Sony aX-system is better in this matter. =/
Yeah I guess you’re right about the stabilization. I’ve noticed that it’s nothing special. And sometimes I wish I could stop down more but it’s not a huge gap to f2.8.

Actually 18-135 will be much more versatile for APS-C

I’ve only found a few situations where I need a better aperture than f4. It just seems to be the perfect aperture for most situations
Got my Sony 18-105 F4 today, excited for using it with my A6000
That's great to hear. You can do some amazing work with F4!

That was awesome, David. Thank you for a really interesting video.

Yes you can. Primes used to be better because they are sharper but they’re not the much sharper now.

That’s a tough decision. I really prefer Sony for video now because of less focus breathing, but I’ve never used the sigma.
I’m thinking of this lens, your video is great, it’s made my mind up, thank you
Glad I could help!

The main downside of a 1.4 would be weight, cost, and you don’t usually have the ability to zoom.
every lens has its own purpose. I wouldnt buy an F4 lens but it is an aperture that i use a lot on my primes when needed.

I am thinking of getting this lens and using with a7c for trek, does it feel too heavy on a7c?
It was fine for me. I kinda thought it was the biggest lens I would use with it though.
I’m using with a7ii and the grip is great as it can be balanced with the weight of the lens.
Wow F4 is much more useful than a 2.8 lens. I am looking a good zoom lens for my zve1
Definitely! I use it on my zve1 and a6700. It actually fits the body pretty well too.
its true, thanks

Lots of sacrifice for what you get
Ya because it’s awesome 👏
I agree with all of this. Thank you
Thank you

Same set bro
For 550€ u think worth to buy ?
The new 20-70 F4 G costs in the moment 1100€ and is much better, very much...
Is it better because it’s the one you bought?
A lot lighter too
