She plays this piece in authentic Iberian style, which seems to elude most violinists today. She takes her time and allows the phrases to breathe. She makes music out of this piece, while others just use it to show off without having a clue of what they’re doing. In addition to Ida Haendel’s stellar performance, I also recommend renditions by Aaron Rosand, Augustin Hadelich, and Itzhak Perlman.

Very true. She once said in an interview that technique had nothing to do with playing fast. For her, great technique was the ability the maintain rhythm and articulation. Her rhythm and articulation were certainly remarkable.

Ida Haendel is the reason I took up the violin! I have had a never-ending source of joy with my violin - every day is a new discovery as Ida said. I thank Ida for inspiring me since the 80's.

well said. no wonder she adored Celibidache (see her wonderful chat with cellist Stephen Isserlis)...they both knew what it means to take one's time with the music, let it breathe and flower and soar...

Má nejoblíbenější skladba s Idou Haendel - nádhera, ten motiv je ještě krásnější zde, na housle takto zpracovaný, než operní provedení jednotlivých částí Carmen. Velmi děkuji a zdravím z České Republiky.

Midoris has alot of Youth energy and vigor and has its own wow quality, but this is a master playing flawless gypsy style sarasate. She is owning that violin and piece of music..luv luv luv

Brilliant musicians like Haendel, Heifetz, Kreisler, Menuhin, Bach, Paganini, and Sarasate are why there should be human immortality. I know their music, and techniques, are immortal as long as people continue to listen, and learn, but I wish these amazing people could live on, and continue enriching our lives, forever.

Professional soloists are expected to memorize what they play - _that_ is just part of being a professional soloist. Many non-musicians think that memorizing a piece of music is somehow a big deal. It isn't! A large part of learning a piece of music is by practicing it without the sheet music in front of you. And, by the time you've practice the piece to the point where you feel you can play it properly and confidently in public, it is usually already memorized anyway.
