    Turning someone into a ghost specifically to banish them seems counter to what a ghost hunter would be trying to accomplish.

      Autoscroller segments are some of my favorite parts of TASes, as that's where you see things like the SMB3 TAS doing frame perfect enemy dodges and juggling a shell to get one-ups every second. There's not a whole lot available to interact with here, but might as well have fun with it.

    I love it when TASes have commentary. The audio is a bit weird in this one. You lower the game audio whenever you're talking, but it'll spike in short gaps of you talking. I would recommend just keeping the game audio down the entire time, especially if you're going to be talking for most of the run.

      @@jarlykif you’re using a compressor to duck your voice, you just want a longer release (and maybe a longer look ahead or attack). I’d also recommend turning the game audio down a little directly

    I'm sure people have asked this before, but why aren't the warrior dreams included? I get not including dream variants like NKG, Failed Champ, Soul Tyrant etc. but why not dream warriors like Markoth, Elder Hu, No Eyes etc? They're all explicitly dead before we ever meet them, so why don't the count as ghosts?

      Basically the category was defined as specifically banishing all the ghosts that give you one essence. This ends up producing a much more interesting route than something that also fights the dream warriors, especially if you include Lost Kin, as that means the route will get wings. A huge part of the appeal of Ghostbusters as a challenge category is the unique wingless movement that you don't really get to see in many other categories.

    You’ve got a super relaxing voice, there’s a slight reverb to your mic that really fits the vibe of the game. I loved the commentary, this is now my favorite way to watch TASs!

    The way you are weaving the commentary with the run is excellent. This I believe is how it should be done; and only the author of a run is so intimately familiar with the intent of each decision to make the best commentary.

    Delightful as usual! The commentary made this much more interesting. If it were me, I'd ditch the audio compressor and just have the game at the low volume the whole time. It seemed a bit distracting near the start when it was fading in and out frequently.
    PS: Wouldn't it be Revik's death's work instead of life's? 😉

    Been loving all the clips of this, so happy to finally be able to see the full run!
    Edit: Well that was fantastic to watch, didn't realize dashmaster is an S tier combat charm for TAS. Great instructive as well as humerous commentary. I'd love to see more TASes from you but I understand this must've taken well over a hundred hours (i'd love to know how much time these actually take), the hive knight fight alone looks insane. Glad to finally see something done with daan olavs itemless baldur tech. Also didn't think I'd be learning things from a TAS given its mostly all frame perfect inputs but now I know I only need to pogo the aspid once and there's actually a trans dash spot there for wingless hornet 2. Didn't know about the spots in basin either.

      It's on the order of 100 hours per TAS, varying a bit depending on how much I optimize. This one took longer than the 0 Geo and Spelless TE TASes I did, since it was done in 1432, where the environment is way less stable. 0 Geo was encoded as a single video in one pass, whereas Ghostbusters had to be encoded as 19 separate videos and then spliced together. I'm definitely still working on more though. My next planned TAS is 0 Geo TE, but with gathering swarm permanently equipped.

    Wonderful run! Commentated TASes are always a favorite of mine, and this was a great one with very entertaining commentary. Just to double check, 31:07 the "dancing to get bell faster" was a joke, right? Like, I had been assuming it was just to be funny, but I've heard more bizarre manips used in runs :)

      This is actually speed tech. The normal technique is known as lookdown instabell, found by skurry, where looking down at precise moments while the bell animation is playing makes the animation skip segments and finish more quickly. The lookdown trick doesn't work on 1 hp, however, so we use an alternative form based on turnarounds. This works because the state machine used for the bell animation uses a global message for its 'finished' trigger, which means finishing other animations (like looking down or turning around) can inject a 'finished' message early and abort the animation. Technically I didn't fully optimize this and could've gotten a faster instabell.

      Just in case you weren't aware, this is a TAS, which means I used software to program inputs in a way that results in way more precision than is humanly possible to execute with any reliability.

    Weird specific question: at 7:52-7:53, at the screen transition to the room outside the stag station. Why do you do a little hop off the starting platform rather than just falling off the side?

      My guess is that after skurry discovered the lookdown instabell, other people started looking at the FSM (the code controlling the logic for the bell animation) and then looking for other things in the game that could trigger the same message. In general there are a few glitches that happen as a result of global messages conflicting. For example, if an enemy or a piece of debris bonks on the ceiling while the knight is jumping, it will also cause them to bonk, as if the knight hit the ceiling too.

    So I watched the no commentary version first, but there were a few things that still confused me so I came back to this one only to realize that they weren't mentioned at all.
    -Why does the game resolution keep changing between segments? It's most noticeable after getting shade cloak.
    -Why does this category not include the dream warriors? Are they not ghosts? I was unaware going in that this category didn't include warrior dreams, and I even checked the category extension rules but even that wasn't clear, so it was frustrating to not know whether or not they're required until near the very end of the run. Really seems like something that should've been mentioned, especially since you fight Galien early on but only very briefly mention the essence you get from him.
    -Why do the platforms in Queen's Gardens keep turning black? I assume it's just a graphical error with the software but it's weird that you just never acknowledge it.
    And even within the commentary you mention a few things that are never explained for those who aren't already part of the speedrunning scene.
    -What exactly is a transdash?
    -Why does wiggling make the bell come up faster in King's Station?
    These are all ultimately pretty minor things but it just frustrates me that the commentated video doesn't explain much more than what I can already clearly see happening on screen.

    Why didn’t the tas jump of the platform to speed up seers arrival? Isn’t falling off a time save?
    Also why not use the mantis claw skip? (Having mantis hit you out of animation)
    I don’t know too much about 1432, so it being because of patch restrictions is my current guess but I’m not too sure.

      This TAS was done on patch 1432 and those tricks don't work on this patch (they work on 1221). On this patch the seer doesn't spawn sooner from falling off and the mantis early control is blocked by an invisible wall.

    Super late but wouldnt it have been faster to get claw first? would have let you skip setup for shade and do skips with claw? Doubt ill get a response but wanted to ask anyways

      Getting dnail before claw was primarily to be able to go directly to deepnest after getting claw. We don't need to get cdash, since we don't need to get Monomon, which in turn means we don't need lantern. Most routes that get claw before dnail are doing it because they want to enter city next and gather relics for lantern. For this category, we can skip all that.

      This speedrun category is defined as dreamnailing all the ghosts that you can banish for 1 essence. Adding the warrior dreams would make the run longer, but it would actually make it a lot less interesting, as it would bypass a lot of the cool movement that makes this a popular challenge category. Basically, that would just end up being TE routing, plus banish the glade and a few ghosts. With the Ghostbusters rules, however, we get to do fun things like wingless abyss climb, since no dreamgate.

      Yes, this is known as overcharming. Just keep trying to equip the charm and eventually it will break the limit. You can only overcharm by one charm and you need at least one free notch to overcharm into. The tradeoff is that you take double damage while overcharmed, though this can be a benefit, as it makes it easier to get down to one health for fury.

    Part of me wonders why you only did Galien is he the only dream warrior that is classified as a ghost or are none of the dream warriors ghosts and he was just the fastest.

      For the purposes of this run, only the ones that give you a single essence when you dreamnail them are considered ghosts. Including the dream warriors would make the route less interesting, as, among other things, you'd end up getting wings, removing the cool wingless movement sections. We do need some essence, however, to open the glade, and Galien is conveniently located to get what we need.

      Including all the dream warriors would add a lot of content to the run, but it would actually make the route a lot less interesting. The goal for the category (banish the 'passive' ghosts that give 1 essence) creates some unique conditions that result in movement you don't see in many other categories. For humans, this is a popular challenge category.

    I get that this is just a meme run, but it still seems improperly named, since it seems that all the dream warriors and dream bosses are or become ghosts that can be dream nailed.
    I wonder if there's any "all dialogue" TASes, in which every piece of dialogue is obtained. But this would be ridiculous, so maybe an "all dream nail interactions" tas would be better. This would require dream nailing everything once. I'm not sure if enemies should count, but it'd be cool if they did. This would basically be an all achievements run but slightly worse. A true 113% of the game, lol.

    Can’t TAS do wallcling storage? I noticed it wasn’t doing it across blue lake. Or do you need claw for that to be possible?

      late answer but the purpose of this run is to banish all of the ghosts in hallownest that give you 1 essence for dream nailing them
      gallien is killed for the sake of opening spirit's glade as that takes 100 essence

    Wait, can't you skip the last elevator with a glitch as speedrunners usually do? Or is it not possible in this patch?

      If you mean using televator glitch (where you warp to the top), that's actually banned in the no-major-glitches ruleset. Most of the time we wall climb in elevator shafts, but in this case the walls are far enough apart that this isn't possible except for the very last section.

    this is a really neat video and tas! but um by any chance would you mind having the in-game audio be quieter in future videos as in this one some of the game sounds were unpleasantly loud and turning down the video's volume didn't exactly work as then your voice ended up being too quiet (though this is probably just me having sensory issues and not an actual issue with the video itself, so feel free to ignore this comment)

      Thanks for letting me know; probably the issue is that the compressor on the game audio is releasing too suddenly, which makes the change in volume between the voice and game audio really jarring. I'll try to do a better job of balancing that in future videos.

      @@jarlyk maybe a few days late, but the jarring part for me was when the audio would suddenly increase again in the middle of a sentence because there was a slight pause. Game audio being louder around sentences is nice, but it did feel a bit intrusive at times. Really awesome TAS nonetheless.

      This run is done on patch 1432, where wcs doesn't work quite the same way and is also banned in the no-major-glitches ruleset.
