Saw them play the whole album at the Marillion Weekend in Port Zelande, Netherlands, in 2013. There's a bluray of that performance available.
I love that DVD, and the others from that weekend
saw the whole thing live on the brave tour 94 in Bristol , just over the bridge that inspired it , one of the best things i ever saw live
JIM - hard to believe, after the split from Fish and the first album with H "Seasons End", where they could fall back on almost finished material, came "Holiday in Eden", where they had to write an album for the first time with H without finished material and therefore they even used a track from H's former band. All this under the pressure of EMI to write a good album with some radio-ready 3min hits. AND THEN THEY DID THIS!!!! A concept album when the idea of concept albums had long died. Wow! Jim, there's a lot more to discover on planet Marillion....
Remember your video to "The great escape" where you said that that must me a "modern" track of the last years...no, HERE we are. Back in 1994. 🙂
They lost a voice but with H they got a new voice AND a musician.
Amen to that!!
If you're gonna be doing more Marillion album reactions, I guess "Marbles" should be top of the list.
Slowly, Jim muss process Brave first.
@@arthurmol6875 For sure. 😄 Just planting a seed.
Amen!
Marbles that includes Ocean Cloud which was left off the original album in the usa.
@@shyshift oh, I'm talking the complete edition, naturally.
Coming from Holidays in Eden it took me a long while to get into this album, but my admiration for its darkness and density has only deepened over the years. I think in many ways it's better than The Wall or Animals, because it's not an album about self, it's an album about empathy, and I think that's where the strength in Hogarth's writing really lies. Good that you mention Ian Mosely because he is a very versatile and immaculate drummer without ever calling attention to himself.
When i saw them play the full album, on the Brave tour. The only tiny H talked to the audience was after Hard Of Love and before Hollow Man...just to say hello and introduce the rest of the album....it was a stunning first set....and the second set was basically a greatest hits....it was a jaw dropping tour!.
We saw Brave in Leeds on that tour. You could hear a pin drop in the first half when they played the album. Was superb.
@@jacquelineblear2569Was at the Leeds show too. I can remember a moment during the song Brave itself. A deep bass pedal sound shook the room. A young couple in front of me seemed utterly mesmerised and I heard her say something to her fella, along the lines of 'amazing' or something similar. And it was.
Saw Marillion on the Brave tour 1994 one of the best gigs I ever saw
Yes , they played it live in entirely. In Holland they played a lot of concerts that year in a smaller venue to get the armosphere for this Album. I saw them 8 times that year in Holland and Germany it was amazing.
Good to see you are flabbergasted.
Enjoy....what is amazing is after Hard as Love the so emotional Hollow man. Listen it directly after Hard As Love it give the number so much more "power"
One of my favourite Marillion songs. Brings back memories. When I bought this album in 94 I also bought Talk by Yes. Never regretted this... I saw Marillion with H in Vredenburg Utrecht, 1989 I guess, for the Season's End tour.. One of his first concerts as frontman . The audience immediately loved this guy! What a vocalist!
Jim, the band put together Marillion Weekends, they do cover Brave from start to finish..it's a hard listen as there is so much going on..the storyline is incredible and there was a Video (The making of Brave) which is probably still available out there..worth a watch. They performed the whole album in 2013 at Wolverhampton...there is a very big possibility that they will perform it again at the MW in Leicester De Montfort a little later this year...may be worth keeping an eye out mate
That was when I first Brave live, at one of the weekends, such a sumptuous gorgeous album to hear live! Can't wait for Leicester in May😎💜🍺👍
loving the new intro graphics, very cool
Thanks!
Yes they done it all live and available on DVD/Blu-ray, worth getting!
Lovey to see your Marillion journey Jim
Thanks Steve 👍🏼👍🏼
thanks for sharing !! it is a great concept album and has everything musically en lyrically...one of he best Marillion albums ever !
Enjoying the journey with you, Jim. I love first time reactions! Marillion has "Brave Live" on their VOD website. You can rent it or own it. Watch their RUclips release of "Hollow Man" from the concert in 2013. All the links are there. Looking forward to side three...
Yes indeed. They played this entire album live from start to finish
With you on this one Jim as a first listen. Boy what a set of music that was!
I got The Wall, I didn’t get Animals at all but I also got The Lamb in sections. Amazing rock style tracks and just a joy. You did that side credit Jim. Well done as I thoroughly enjoyed your enthusiasm. Cheers. Dave ✅✅
If you want to hear Brave live, listen to the live album Made again. Disc 2 of the cd version contains Brave live in Paris 1994.
HI Jim,
Marillion played the full Brave album during their "Brave Tour" in 1994. Saw them 3 nights in a row on April 1994 at La Cigale in Paris. Just WOW!!! I must have somewhere some film photograph of those shows ...
The show has been audio recorded and a 1998 mix by Michael Hunter of the show on April 29th was released in the Brave Deluxe Boxset.
YEAHHHH Hard As Love is incredible..
Great reaction 👍🏻👊🏻
This album was recorded in Château de Marouatte, Grand-Brassac (France).
The B-side of their single The Great Escape is called Marouatte Jam. Check ik out, it's great.
After this, just do their next album AOS. It is Steve Rothery his favorite one...
Great reaction Jim, looking forward to part 3
One of my favourite DVDs is taken from the shows at Port Zelande in 2013. Called Brave live 2013. The version of Great Escape you reacted to was from that night. Other nights were released as DVDs as well, I would loved to be there to see that weekend.
what an excellent sonic start to my morning here in Philly... as we anticipate big things for our Eagles in this Sunday's Super Bowl. Regardless of the outcome, there won't be any jumping off bridges (see how I tied that in there?!) 🤓
Fly Eagles Fly
Can't wait for you to do the rest of the album.
Ok I am literally in tears, again 29 years ago in a concert! Amazing Album. I lived in Swindon until I move to Scotland 21 years ago, I so adore this album used to go to Wales over it on M4. Now there is a second Seven crossing. I have the T shirt of the8 album!!! Thanks Steve brilliant for putting, I love your channel. But you picked a gem! As it says on my sleeve , Listen to it loud with light off!
Yes I have seen them in live oxford right through. They did this in 2013 right the way through it and its almost like a play. I dunno if you can get a PZ 2013 convention. That's what you saw when you started looking at just 'singles', if you can call it that. But it is amazing live!!
"Have they ever played the entire album live at once?" - I'm sure someone else must've answered this already, but just in case... Yes. I believe their tour in 1994 they played the entire work (with exception of the 'happy ending' track "Made Again") and also at one of the 'convention' performances in recent years they played the entire opus. I think someone mentioned the Bluray of that, definitely one to get your mitts on.
Never get used to it …brilliant
One of the best parts of the album. What a musical journey
FYI - Marillion's live album - Made Again - disc 2 is "Brave Live"
The full Brave show from Paris is also included in the 4 disc Brave box set remaster.
Never heard this before, like it 😎
This is my personal favourite of the Hogarth era albums. It has an ambition, scale and level of production that no album before or since has touched (probably because this is the last album of theirs that had a big budget). Plus I agree when you say they are firing on all cylinders - performance wise this has to be the best album of either Marillion era. I wish they would go back to rehearsing and composing the songs as complete pieces, rather than the cut-and-paste method they've used for ages.
"This rocks well, dunnit?" Yes, Jim, there's plenty of reason why "Hard as Love" has been a live favorite for a long time. ;)
In 94 onTour every evening they played the whole Brave Album without breake…what a journey…it was
Brave, Marillion Weekend 2002, Brean Sands, just awesome! ❤️💜😎🍺👍
The best part of an outstanding album.
Watched them play this album in Liverpool in 94 am pretty sure that was the first time they played it live
The Wilson Remix sounds awesome
Regarding this album done live in its entirety: they did on the original Brave tour and after that only did it once at one of the Marillion Weekend. Luckily that performance was filmed and is released on DVD / BluRay.
Jim,
I highly recommend you listen to the 5.1 mix of this album.
It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever heard!!!!!
Hey Jim! Here we go.😎
It's always interesting to see what bands come up with for album sleeves for records that were only released on CD originally. I think that's a Bill Smith Studios outer sleeve. They also did sleeves for King Crimson, Porcupine Tree and Kate Bush. "Hard as Love" is easily the highlight of this part of the album (perhaps of the entire thing.) It''s an amazing song. Not only did MK bring old school organ in, but there's even a bit of Mellotron in the backdrop. This was around the time bands realized those old analog instruments had unique, rich sounds that just can't be replaced. Personally I like the CD version better because this needs to be heard more as a continuum, and having to flip the vinyl over so much kind of breaks that.
Im guessing from the comments that this is the Steven Wilson remix. It sounds good. I was nevrr a fan of Hard as Love but this actually sounds great. I mentioned on part 1 that I saw the original tour and with the full album play through. Happy days.
Hi Jim,
What a great record.isn’t it?
There’s a Brave live album 2019
Fish made several great solo albums after he left Marillion. Live he’s great too: The complete bbc sessions.
I use an external battery pack for my action cam. I can record continuously for about 10 hours if I wanted to. The memory card won’t last that long. Maybe your camera can work with such a battery pack.
Other than Paper Lies and hard as Love, this is the high point of the H era IMO. Marbles is close behind though. This was back before Michael Hunter started snipping pieces together and they stopped writing true songs with bridges and thoughtful changes, such as on the last two albums. Glad you enjoyed Brave. As the notes say, listen to it loud with the lights off - Wilson’s remix is simply stunning.
Marillion album is 29 years old now released on the 7th of February 1994 #Marillion 🎸🎸
30 years today, Happy Birthday Brave! 😃
@@paulmcmillan5941 it's hard to believe it's 30 years ago 7th of februarie 1994
Seeing how you were asking. You know these weekend convention thingies that they do? Each year they have a new way of approaching it. Sometimes it's a singles only gig, or sometimes it is an alphabet gig where every song starts with the next one in the alphabet.Let me introduce you to 2013 weekend in Holland. The whole Brave Live gig is one of their weekends and can be found on their website under DVDs. I would post the link but YT keeps taking it down.
You should also maybe do a reaction to the 50 minute film version of the album by Richard Stanley.
Saying that, not sure if it is still available on YT in its entirety, although parts are.
And may struggle to get it past copyright issues - but well worth a watch - even if you have to do it offline.
As it says on the back cover - "Watch it loud with the lights off."
Check out Brave live 2013 from Port Zeelande dvd Jim. It will blow you away!
Marillion is the old Riverside. Each Godlike.
Jim, try and get hold of an original '94 copy (with the brown tinted cover art) The remix has alot of content missing.
Hollow Man, Alone Again in the lap of Luxury, The great escape, and the title track Brave are all masterpieces.
Also, saw them at Aylesbury (the cleaner thought we were roadies and let us in and we had lunch next to the band) and Hammersmith on the '94 Brave tour. It was this tour that introduced John Wesley to Europe - he was the support act (and thoroughly nice chap).
Also rubbed shoulders with Wes at the Brave movie premiere at The Mean Fiddler in Milton Keynes.
I remember seeing John Wesley support them
I thought 1994 was just before the rise of New Labour.....though I get your point about how different this sounds to the era....I think the word is 'timelessness'....🧐
Now. That IS a good record... :)
Time for a new battery Jim? Perhaps an external PSU is available for your camera - perhaps you can charge and record at same time?
I've golt 3 batteries, and an external PSU - I normally change the battery after each side but must have been too keen to listen to side 2!
😎
It rocks on as HARD as LOVE
Made again Jim Cd2
Love Marillion, and Brave is probably my favourite album but I could never get away with this remix. A lot of the time the vocals are almost buried in the mix and very reverby. Brilliant album though but original mix for me.
Same to me. How much I admire Steven Wilson somehow I don’t particularly like this remix. The album itself is my favorite Marillion album if I would have to pick only one.
I thought it was just me. Definitely prefer the original mix.
I loved Marillion as a teen from their debut album onwards, through to Seasons End. It was the AOR of 'Holidays In Eden' that turned me off the band until F.E.A.R garnered my interest again, in hindsight at the time I had no knowledge it was record company pressures that forced their hand into such blandness.
I have been catching up on their back catalogue since and really regret now not checking out 'Brave' at the time..simply assuming by mid nineties Marillion were uncool as fuck and steering into AOR...how wrong I was. For the most part, 'Brave' is a masterpiece, easily to be filed alongside 'An Hour Before It's Dark' and 'F.E.A.R' in my opinion. I think the late 90s though would have turned me off Marillion again.
Was "The Hollow Man" not the last track on this side?
It is on my copy - but maybe your copy is newer/different.
Anyway great reaction - fantastic album.
I think it's down to Jim's copy being the 2018 remix.
There's quite a bit missing.
The original was a double album, I was kind of waiting for Jim to say he'll be reviewing side 3 next...
@@russayres5287 I am sure we still have sides 3 and 4 to come.
Maybe the remix 2018 has "The Hollow Man" as the first track on side 3.
@@paulf2557 Does the remix 2018 version have the double spiral that the original and the remaster have ? I only had the CD & the remix CD/Bluray versions.
@@clansome Mine is the original - so don't know about the 2018 remix that Jim is using.
I hope it has the double ending though.
OK - I just checked on Discogs, and the 2018 remix only has the "Made Again" ending.
That is a real shame - but not totally unexpected.
And it does have "The Hollow Man" on side 3, and pushes the title track "Brave" onto side 4.
Argh. Dont mention Genesis!
I think I like it Jim. I think....
I really like it.
11:50 Time for some Jim style finger taps!!🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌😂👌
Just a masterpiece... any other description would be unnecessary
