Penelope do you have a Tandy Leather store near you? If you do they always have some cool leather on sale, just tell them what you want it for and hope the have the colors you'd like. The amount of leather you'd need isn't very much. I made a super cool leather vest with some black pigskin they had on sale for $12 a skin and you wouldn't need that much. They had run out of brown.

Rub a candle on a piece of felt. Rub felt on leather, simple as that.
