- Pakistan, Which Was set to participate in 44th Chess olympiad being hosted by India, has now backed out, saying that india is 'politicising' the game.
Just hours before the inauguration of the 44th Chess Olympiad that will be held in Chennai, the last lap of the Olympiad torch relay was carried out in Chennai city before the inauguration of the event.

All the national team players can share all forums their hard work and excellent performance for the national championship and later the preparations (this is the first time in the history of Pakistani chess that an international Grandmaster was coaching Pakistani national team) they have done for Olympiad and how the federation has worked to facilitate everything removing hurdles in the trip and how we managed to overcome the hurdles. You may post it everywhere to make your thoughts known. You are pride of Pakistani chess. I have had meetings with the officials as soon as I have entered into pakistan, I will continue meeting the people to gather support for our chess and it’s players. What we have seen from national championship to West Asian Youth Championship Maldives, to National Junior championship in Lahore and Olympiad is all within two months of our existence as chess federation (election took place on 4th June). We have done it all, we can do it again!!! Pakistan will flourish in the chess world, we will fly higher!! Hanif Qureshi, President CFP.

The torch went to all states of India, even the Andaman and Nicobar islands. If there was a political move behind taking the torch to Srinagar, there should have been headlines about India making a statement about Kashmir is ours, and then Pak ministry would've known the very next day. But they took 4 weeks to notice that.

Here are my thoughts on the matter Shehryar:
1- "Being patriotic, all of us were convinced that this was the right action" no dude, it wasn't patriotism , it was fear that what'd happen to our team/officials once they disobeyed the orders and reached back to homeland, so our team wisely chose safety first and had to obey the insanely pathetic and shameful order given by our state.
2- " India brought politics into sports by passing torch through Srinagar/IOJK" my boy according to Indians, Gilgit is also disputed territory where we literally held our National championship this year, and even before that, our country organized a cricket event Kashmir Premier League in Kashmir region where international players were invited, tell me if that wasn't politicizing of sports?
3- The torch passed from Srinagar on 21st June , but still we prepared our team with an international GM, struggled hard for visas, somehow reached Chennai the day before the event around 28th July, and out of nowhere we realized we are supposed to be patriotic and give up one of the most prestigious tournaments of chess and become laughing stock on the global map.
4-Tell me how exactly did it help our kashmiri bros? did they get the freedom?
what kind of compensation did we get by sacrificing our players like useless pawns on 2nd rank?
Meanwhile govt officials from both countries still sitting together in same conference halls while players continue to suffer.
5- Indian Govt paid $10M (or 2,396,600,000 PKR at current rate) for the olympiad , providing 4/5 star hotel accomodations, air tickets and free food and all the other facilities, they were so welcoming to us, they even provided visas to our team within 15-20 days or so meanwhile the bare minimum to apply for Indian visa from here is at least 30-35 days prior to travel even for emergency medical cases let alone for a sports event, in case if you didn't know this.
6- You were there at the nationals in Gilgit, you know how nice it was to stay in the same hotel and be with the top players from accross the country in the same playing hall for a week or so.
Can you even imagine how devastated our players might be right now, looking at the videos/photos of top global players gathered at the same place for 14 days , even WC Magnus Carlsen was there, our players missed all the fun/enjoyment in these depressing times because..patriotism? give me a break.
7- I won't even mention the initial seedings of the tournament, everybody knows we were absolutely nobodies for them, but it could have had been a great fun/learning experience for our team.
But here we are, proudly sharing the news/articles of boycott from chess Olympiad in every Whatsapp group as if we've conquered Kashmir or something.
Mark my words: there won't be any compensation given to our team for the great loss, 'the state' doesn't care, there won't even be an official apology, our team was sacrificed for nothing.

My thoughts as an Indian on this subject-
As a player myself,I feel the pain of your team losing an amazing oppurtunity and was very saddened when I first heard about this.
While I understand that everyone has different political opinions and Kashmir is certainly a very contentious issue among the two countries,I absolutely do not beleive that the citizenry whIch is uninvolved in geo-political decision making should suffer and lose chances for ''patriotism'' or what have you.
The Pakistani team backing out of the Olympiad is going to have zero impact on anything and is simply political grandstanding by your officials.
I'm sure you understand this and must be personally hurt by this decision.
While I absolutely agree that the team had no choice but to bck out and openly criticizing the government can lead to problems,I find it a bit strange that you chose to come out and justfiy this absurdity which you personally don't seem to be convinced by yourself.
I hope chess in Pakistan continues to grow.

Qualification for all 10 Pak players happened in Gilgit, which is just as disputed as Srinagar. By Pakistan foreign ministry's logic, India should have banned the players.
Pak ministry just took offence out of nothing. Sacrifices are given when there's something to gain for the country. The event is going great, just our excitement to host Pak players got killed which no one else will notice. This is a decision made without any thought, which solely hurts Pakistani players and none else.
Ps: The next Olympiad will not be free for players like this one.

They took the torch on 21st June. Why make players travel all the way to Chennai and make them return empty handed. They took one whole month to decide whether they will play or not ? I wish the young playera of pak had the opportunity to play on. I fail to understand why Pakistan waited so long and pull out at the last moment. Bro this makes no sense. Our sportspersons have always connected at a level that transcended politics. Making sports a pawn to politics is bad, for this kind of pawn never promotes. This is Pakistan's loss more than anyone else's. The players lost the chance to play with GMs. The sponsors who came forward lost their money and may not be supportive in the future. And this patriotic angle does not work. Look at the teams playing in Chennai. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan are here, despite their differences. Palestine and Israel after both here. Iran and Saudi are here. Bangladesh and Myanmar are here. So this logic is laughable and the joke is on Pakistan, which is sad because the team looked as though there are excited.

the narrative that you selling doesn't add up the torch rely was announced at 19th june , it clearly mentions the cities through which it will pass.
China decided not to play on around 23 june reason officially mentioned was travel restriction or even they were pissed off that torch rely passed through Arunachal pradesh(confirm of the former doubtful of the latter).
Russia was banned by FIDE.
France top seed decided not to play due to personal reasons months ago(understandable).
Pakistan chess fed decided to come and then pull back by the govt on 29th july, was the "solidarity" sleeping for an entire month.I can understand why pak chess fed didnt realized this as they would be very busy but how did pak FM got to know that torch rely passed though Jammu and srinagar on the last date. Western countries were boycotting the event but many allied nations of west simply boycotted the opening and closing ceremony as well as diplomatic boycott was announced by some (including India) even though there was only one or two players actually playing the event.
I encourage the youth of pak read historic literature of post independence Kashmir.. do not go by govts propaganda. I would love to have a passionate debate on this followed by a game of chess too. Comparing a full fledged war ( imposing one country on another) to our Kashmir issues sounds how biased the last part of conversation was.
As Indians we will always take care of our J&K and work for the development of it .

There are couple of things to ponder upon. First Russia Ukraine cannot be compared with the Kashmir issue as it is totally different things. Second if Pakistani were hurt the they should have shared the reaction at the same time which is 21st of June. After reaching to Chennai they got to know about this which showcase that your ministry of foreign affairs is quite incapable to understand issues and doesn't have clear idea about various scenarios of the world. Third, if pakistanis are hurt they should also boycotted to play match against India in Common wealth games as they are not happy with India so it makes sense that they want to show their disappointment at all forums. If they are doing so then it is quite clear that who politics and creating road blocks for their players.
After listening to this totally convoluted opinion, I felt that Pakistan is a place where common sense and reasoning go to die. Perhaps, that country should be ceded to the after-Friday-namaaz jahils. At least they don't pretend to be chess players. As far as Pakistan participating or not participating, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans to any of the others. So keep carrying on this tamasha and keep wasting everyone's time - that's what you've made of your reputation.
Why were Pakistani authorities sleeping since 21 June?
This is embarrassing. If there was an issue with torch, they should not have sent the team in the first place. Torch passed through Srinagar weeks back. MEA of Pakistan or Pakistan Embassy was sleeping then, why didn't they take any call? There was no buzz even in the Pak media. Only when team reached Chennai, Pak MEA came out of their deep slumber and realized kuch to karna hoga, else it can be politicized by PTI or other opposition against the government, which is already walking on a tight rope currently, and the could be backlash. Instructing team to not participate when they have reached the venue shows how much sincere or serious is Pak Government about Kashmir and its issue. They just sacrificed chess players to save their ass.

India is hoisting a g20 meeting in Srinagar is pakistan going to boycott g20 countries??? If pakistan didn't wanted to participate in the event because India passed the torch in every state and union territory then it should have not joined the tournament, why on the first place you sent your players to India ??? Torch was passed around the country on that day it was done way before was pakistan foreign office sleeping????
