I’m one of the few people still alive who attended the Cleveland Air Races in 1948, their last year due to a crash. I also got to visit the Reno Air Race in 1989 (Rare Bear won over Strega and others) and plan on flying my RV6 to Roswell in 2025. Excited for the future of air racing.
So thankful that the Air Races will continue to exist for our future generations to enjoy. Great sport. Great participants. Great aircraft. Best of luck to RARA and Roswell, NM!!!
Thanks! This is Great News! Thanks for the video over the Sierra's. There will be a continuation of the (Reno Air Races) and all its glory with a special thanks to Terry and Tony. I've been fortunate to attend the races for nearly 3 decades. The memories are there, and Stead will forever be in my heart. Thank you so much for interview.🪶

At Roswell is the old Walker Air Base, now called Roswell Air Center. I was stationed there in the mid-70's with Det. 1, 22 Bomb Wing as CFR Airman 1st Class. The base had been shut down and the City of Roswell took it over for the airport and rental of base housing, and the USAF rented some facilities for the 50 odd personnel stationed there. As well, there was a Greyhound Bus factory in one of the old hangars, and many commercial aircraft were stored there for there dry conditions of the High Desert. I was a lifeguard for a summer when the city opened the old O Club swimming pool for the public, and all of the Air Force families had free access in exchange for the USAF providing the certified lifeguards. At that time many fighter aircraft, stationed elsewhere, used the Tower for a waypoint on training missions. Cannon Air Base in Clovis was one of the locations fighters flew from, and a high point for me was seeing F4's fly directly over the tower and light the after burners on the was out. Loud is a fair description of those events. The Viet Nam war was winding down and the Detachment never went active duty, and most of of us were transferred to March AFB in Riverside. This will be a fantastic location for many years to come and I might have to make the pilgrimage to see the inaugural event, just for old times... Thanks Juan for the news, and the memories...
Roswell has an almost unlimited ability to expand into a great event. New Mexico already has their Great Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. Carlsbad Caverns a few hours South of Roswell is a must see. Bright future.
@@randalldunkley1042 I wasn't implying Spaceport for the races. You mentioned other great NM attractions & I happen to think Spaceport is a good addition to the list. Especially since I just saw a Galactic launch there on Sat., my 8th launch. 😁❤️
Fantastic. Great location with lots to do besides the show and races. What a wonderful outcome! A lot of work ahead but an American institution was saved. Love that Blancolirio enthusiasm!!
My first solo Atlantic crossing (St Johns to Shannon) was in a brand new C-310. Then continued on to Nairobi. That was in the days of compass and clock navigation
So exciting to have it come to our back yards. (Although those other venues sounded pretty good too!) Camping is a little limited in Roswell, but check out Bottomless Lakes State Park about 10 miles east of the air port and , of course, Carlsbad Caverns is about 100 miles to the south.
Reno really was unique with the high-density hotel capacity for spectators so close to the low-density desert needed to safely air race. It sounds like they found the next best option in Roswell. I just hope it isn't too limited by the capacity to host spectators.
we did landing gear and brake testing there on the 747 back in 1969, three fully loaded landings, full panic stop ,immediate take off. no thrust reversers, no flaring upon landing 10 ft per sec vertical on touch down. impressive. we were the back up plane that passed, first one a tire blew and caught on fire. I had to change antenna connections on top of the tail from flight test to regular ant, had to use a cherry picker to go to the 60 ft top. I found I could wiggle the whole plane from up there. I was the only one certified to use the cherry picker. I hugged the tail the whole way up . Bendix threw a big party after that passing certification test. The wings looked like they were flaping during the test, broke loose a water storage for the lavatory ,flooded the belly ,shorted the antenna connections on some mounted on the belly, so protective tunes were installed to prevent that from ever being and😢 issue. What a great plane and an experience for a young man, was in avionics on the flight test program, had 5 to test in parralel to finish within a year.
I moved from Nevada to Texas, and I miss the Reno Air Races more than anything in that state, Juan, you just made me miss it even more with that film from pylon 8!
So excited for this. Just moved from Reno to Texas last year. My parents actually live a few miles out of Roswell, so can't wait to get back to air racing in 2025. Lets Goooo!!!
If he space port gets built in Pahrump it would be the perfect place for RARA to come home to in Nevada in a few years. The space necessary to fly is thee and the hotels in Vegas can handle any crowds.
Great news. Reno Air Race was on my bucket list but being from the UK it was going to be a stretch then I thought the chance had gone... I'm going to have to investigate some sort of fly drive to New Mexico. Great news!
Greetings from Germany.... WOW...! I am excited for my Home Town to be able to host the Reno Air Racing Association. Hope it all works out and that Roswell/logistics will be able to support such an annual event.
Yes! As a spectator of a previous RAR l am very excited to hear of the saving of the event thanks to Roswell. Also the tail end of your vid Juan will "put a horn on a jellyfish" for anyone who loves warbirds and the racing of.. Thanks for this content. Si, Christchurch, New Zealand. 🇳🇿
This is good information. Thanks for doing this interview. I have spent plenty of time in Roswell and looking forward to attending this inaugural event.
This is great news for the economy of south-east New Mexico. Anyone thinking about getting a hotel/motel reservation should do it ASAP as there aren't a lot of rooms to be found in this mostly rural area. You might consider looking for lodging in the nearby towns of Artesia, Carlsbad and Ruidoso as well. See you at the races next year!
I’ve only attended a few races at Reno so it’ll be both sad and very nice to have a new venue to be able to attend. There ya go, Reno giving in to growth over tradition, more than likely, more homes will be built. So long Reno!!
Last year there was a guy and his wife/girlfriend dropping flyers on windshields, saying with some confidence that the “next” year races was going to be in Pahrump, NV. I’ve done work at the VLA radio telescope, to include going to Roswell. This announcement is great, but this just isn’t the same as Reno. Hotels plus “other things to do besides the air show” are quite lacking. But maybe they can make it happen. My wife and I would usually stay in a Reno air B&B. I bet that Reno B&B business is crumpling to some degree. If they expect many attendees to bring RV’s, they’re going to need lots of poop dumping stations, or flat out RV parking lots.
Thank you for this update. Was Walker AFB back in the day and I was stationed there in 1965 with SAC. Would like to see it again but would need a commercial flight to get there and I don't remember any civilian airports close by..
As someone that was born in roswell, and still lives in the region, this is MASSIVE for them. Since the alien incident in the 1940s, Roswell has been stagnant. This will benefit them immensely.
Last time I looked, there were a lot of "retired" aircraft parked on the ramps and taxiways. They'll make for a scenic view as the planes zoom around the pylons...
Juan, I know KROW has been used as a aircraft storage/boneyard facility. What are the plans to move the aircraft to make room or is there enough space now?
Will be interesting on the design of the courses, I have been a pylon judge on the outer course for 13 years, I got to meet you one morning at the races juan, At the breakfast burrito stand.
Fantastic news! I lived in Roswell for a number of years and grew up in El Paso. El Paso and Albuquerque are 4 hours driving time and other cities are even closer. The city is north of the airport and south is wide open. Great venue for racing.
I was born in Roswell, lived there 5 years. Capt Paul Tibbets (Enola Gay commander) ate dinner with us several times in the late 1950's. My dad was career USAF based there and Offutt. They will have time to get housing built by then............ thanks for the update.
Roswell will be a fine place. Open big skies with room to spare. Been in and around there many times. Good vid. Happy for the air racers and fans. Hope to see it myself.

So good to hear this! It was a bummer that they lost Reno but glad to see Roswell stepped up. Hope to have a long future there.

Thanks Juan!! 👍 nice update. Suburban encroachment go figure. Roswell is an outstanding choice 👍
Is this air race in Roswell, an event for flying saucers?
The biggest issue I see is that only American airlines flies in to Roswell and it is a 3+ hour drive from other major airports.
If you build it, they will come?
Blanco also flies for American. It's his day job.
@@JimmysSpeedShop With what looks like 2 or 3 flights a day on CRJ 700, they will come 150 or so a day by air.
