A few days ago I picked up the BG2.0, before firing it I cleaned and oiled it plus I adjusted the rear sight it had to be moved over to the right (yes there was a difference in the sight). I put hollow points and flat nose ( don’t know what brands they where had them in a plastic bag) plus Critical Defense and Federal Premium Hydra-shok deep 99gr 20-25 of each of all the ammo I mentioned and last a box of 50 ball ammo. No issues with any of the ammo it ran great definitely no regrets on the purchase
Finally, a video that shows an ACTUAL comparison (that we can see) between the old and new versions. It has helped me make a buying decision.
Seriously!! It looked massively bigger in every other review who wouldn't just put it directly next to it. Thank you !!
Smith & Wesson has produced a number of average pistols; however, they are attentive to their customers' feedback. The BG 2.0 is a testament to this, with its improved serrations being a prime example. Additionally, its compact size, trigger design, and ergonomics stand out.
They’ve been killing it lately with all their releases. The Shield Plus, Metal Comp Carry line, and more.
If only they were as attentive to customer feedback regarding the ugly internal locks in their revolvers...
Hopefully they're attentive to us who want a DA/SA CSX! Make it happen, Smiff!
@@FCV0511Agreed. I take online surveys for Smith pretty regularly and I never fail to mention my disdain for the hole at any and every opportunity to do so. They know the majority of users and consumers of their products detest the hole. They just won't budge on it though but they don't have to as people keep forking over the big bucks for these MIM'd up, canted barrel, 1 out out of 4 have to be returned ratio of revolver making slop shop crap they're churning out over there.
@@robwilson3749 Keep up the good work - may those survey results influence someone at S&W someday soon!
That wide u-notch rear sight is, I think, by design, and a good design for its intended use. In an emergency the user can easily find that front sight and then has a nice generous gap to line it into quickly. Target shooting range use, especially at distances over about twelve to fifteen feet, is very much a secondary consideration, and I’m glad S&W configured the sights that way.
In this post Elisjsha Dicken world, I don't agree. I don't think a smaller U notch would add any time to aiming at short distance, and would add more longer range capability.
@@Person_of_Interest I for one agree with you. But I would like to see a white line border boxing in that blacked out rear sight.
Might be a nice one for my daughter.
Personally, if I got one for me, I'd probably put a Vertical White Paint Mark in the bottom center of the rear sight since thar is a rather large space!
It would help for accuracy and speed also.
The Shield Minus™️
👌
@@anon6952 I like the term Baby Shield being thrown around. Shield Jr also sounds funny.
Living in the golden age of handgun choices, and S&W is killing it
Looks like a good quality 380acp and accurate. Tight group at the end! Even with the 'airy' U notch rear sight. Good review 👍
Finally someone that shows the feed ramp , thank you
This has been down by previous reviewers.
Amazing review, in-depth but clear, concise, and no frills. I just bought one tonight. I appreciate your video and have subscribed. Thank you!
I own two of the BG 1.0. Never a malfunction. I pocket carry so the long trigger pull is appreciated. Very accurate at the likely self defense distances. I plan on getting the 2.0 when it hits the secondary market.
@@brianf5190interesting post
it has no recoil and it doesn't have any malfunctions like this idi-it ...who pushes a mag in like that and says...malfunction....this guy wouldn't pull off anything when it actuaalllly mattered. I hope he only goes to the range bc who cares about a grouping like that that is something I can hit at 15 yard in 1/10 the time bc I don't spend four hours to pull the trigger and I actually learn the sight and that isn't something in the review;.....it doesn't malfunction if you use it properly and pull the dm trigger
I had one with the laser site. The adjustment screw for that laser backed out and jammed the slide, not fun. After a while the internal hammer would only drop every 3 or so trigger pulls.
Nothing beats a Friday morning like Hammer video for starts. Love the 380acp. I guess S&W is beta testing their stuff too....
BUG = “back-up gun”. Usually smaller than the primary gun, often carried inside a pocket or ankle-holster.
Good job smith. Kicking ass these days.
Thank you for the great level of detail you always include in your videos.
I can see the viability of this as a primary, instead of a BUG.
I'm certainly thinking about it as a primary for situations where it's just not feasible to carry my micro compact 9.
@rushthezeppelin I agree. Especially for Summer attire.
@@rushthezeppelinafter moving to Central Florida, this has been the biggest concern. When it’s over 100 out and need to conceal… BG2.0 shines. And it shoots really well too
@@DJHawkg My situation is climbing gym carry, probably in an ankle holster since I almost always wear pants. Just no way to carry my 9 under climbing harness in anything approaching a comfortable manner, concealable and retained well.
? What.... It's a 380 pocket gun. There's no world where this should be anyone's "primary" gun. It's not adequate for many self defense scenarios. This gun should never be a choice, it is a concession to account for outfit limitations for concealed carry. Your primary firearm should hold 15-20+ rounds of 9mm at minimum, anything less than that is a limitation your placing on your own survival capability.
Looks great for its intended purpose. I think they have a winner. Hopefully it will motivate other manufacturers. Thanks👍!
If you push down on the ejector, you don't have to pull the trigger to disassemble. Good video. 👍
Thank you so much for showing the Bodyguard 2.0 vs the other Bodyguard. I have an original Bodyguard and yes the trigger is awfully heavy but I feel very safe pocket carrying it, though have to really concentrate to shoot for any sort of accuracy. Like others have said, I thought the new 2.0 was just a 380 Shield, seeing that its close to the original size, I want one! Definitely will get the safety model though with that light trigger. Really appreciate your videos, keep up the great work!
Great review HS, I always trust your honest reviews. I wonder how the 380 ballistics perform on penetration and expansion with this weapon? I used to carry 380 in my pocket and switched to 38 Spc +P for increased performance with these two metrics.
I'm sure whoever takes the .380 to their chest or head won't tell themselves "heh, this ain't +p"
My buddy got one of these and it was shooting left… slight adjustment and it was on the money.
I picked up the Bodyguard 2.0 on Tuesday👍 I have not had adequate time at the range for anything more than a function check, but so far, I am 100% in agreement. I am experiencing what I consider "break in" issues, it was really tough to load the last few rounds in the magazines and it only achieved last round slide lock back on one of the 5 magazines I shot through it. But it went bang every time.👍
The slide lock issue is usually due to us riding so high on these smaller guns that we are actually holding the slide lock, but this is just my personal experience of course! I have huge hands and sometimes even do it to certain full size platforms! A little grip adjustment and it usually is corrected! This is all just with my hands and grip, everyone's is different!
@@chapmancollins3519 Thanks, I will have to pay attention to that next time at the range.👍 I have what I call "an orangutan build", Which just means I have long arms, large hands, and large feet, basically a klutz.🤷♂ I didn't know if I was ever going to figure out shooting that darn Hellcat.🤦♂ And this thing is even smaller yet..... But it feels so much better in the hand than that LCP Max does.... I will figure it out.👍
@Disastrous.Affect I'm the same build, and just ordered a Bodygaurd 2.0 in hopes to remedy my wife and I's less than satisfactory experiences with our two LCP Max's. from what I hear, the Bodygaurd 2.0 is the real deal, and what I was expecting the Max to be, not that they are bad guns, they just simply do not perform as expected, meanwhile Honest Outlaw is over here hitting targets at 50yds with the 2.0 (he's a wicked pistol marksman of course)
@@chapmancollins3519 Yeah, on my absolute best days, I aint attempting 50 yard pistol shots anymore, hell I can't focus that far to see a threat.🤣 The thing I found most impressive on the little Bodyguard is the trigger, it is truly impressive for a striker fired pocket pistol, I was shocked.🤷♂ I also have the S&W Equalizer, they shoot very similar, but the Equalizer is bigger. You may want to look at the Equalizer as well, mine is the lightest recoiling micro 9 I have shot and it is easier to manipulate than the Bodyguard.👍
I've read that larger S&W handguns have mags that are hard to fully load especially when new and that after breaking in the become easier. Some say a loader is needed. I use my Magula Uplula for all mags that are difficult to load. One other buyer said his 10-round mag does not lock open on last round and one other YT channel reviewer said his 10-round mag locked open at first but no longer locks open. What is the capacity of your mag that lock open and what is capacity of the mags that do not lock open? Is is only a problem with the 10-round mags?
i love that baby shield ❤
Body guard = Baby shield, shield plus = pre-teen m&p, m&p compact = teen m&p full size
Finally held one today...amazing! Took everything I had to not take it home with me! Will be adding one to my rotation soon!
I took transfer of a Bodyguard 2.0 on Tuesday. I own lots of micro pistols and mouse guns. 275 rounds through the 2.0. Zero functional issues. Aside from FMJ, I ran Federal Hydra-Shok, Underwood 68gr Xtreme Defender and Underwood hardcast flat nose. Perfect feed and function. I suggest a mag loader to get all 12 in that 12 round magazine. It relaxes with use... You are correct in that it takes a conscious effort not to pull shots left. But I got it down pretty quick. I prefer the 2.0 to my G42. Buyers need understand that while there are existing pocket holsters that fit, there are no Kydex rigs available as of now.[Note: I have been informed that Muddy River Tactical does have a Kydex rig available] It's simply too new. Likewise, S&W will not have spare magazines available before September. I went through my many unused holsters and found a Kydex rig that I was able to heat and reshape for the 2.0. Fits snug, with excellent and adjustable retention. This will do for the short term. Overall, I find that this is the best micro .380 available for deep concealment. I paid $399 from Buds with free shipping. Just be prepared for the short-term lack of aftermarket support.
Muddy River Tactical has IWB kydex holsters for it.
@dh3302 thanks! I just placed an order.
Love my LCP MAX, but this will likely be next pistol in my little arsenal 😉🤔👍
Yep.. Just bought one this week, traded my Spectrum in on it. Can't wait to shoot it 👍😜
Love the M&P BG380, trigger was fantastic as it’s an exact copy of a double action revolver. Can’t wait to get this one.
I was waiting for a comparison to the Glock 42. The 42 is my favorite shooting 380 pistol. This may be my new favorite 380 once I pick one up. Great video !
comparo of shooting g42 vs sw
Great video as always!
I wonder how the recoil on this is compared to an LCP Max. I’ve switched to the Keltec P32/ 32ACP because it’s tiny and more pleasant to shoot.
Thanks for your hard work.
FYI, you DONT need to pull the trigger to field strip.
The ejector pivots downward (press down on the tip of it) and lowers/deactivates the sear so the slide can come off without pulling the trigger.
Inserting a magazine resets the ejector back into its normal position
Good video,. Just got mine home from the store...some issues I have encountered without even going to the range...during field stripping nearly impossible to get the slide stop to engage when replacing the slide (and yes the ejector is DOWN per the instructions). Next, loading 10 rds in the 10 rd mag also nearly impossible and then the mag doesn't want to seat without a hard slap. Then, multiple failure to feed with defensive hollow point ammo and manually cycling the action. I think the mag springs are WAY to strong. Not sure about the slide stop issue, but I hope others don't have similar issues.
Todd, my new Bodyguard 2.0 arrived with all kinds of jamming issues. I took it apart and oiled it and went back to the range. Right away, it had a hard jam with a live round in the chamber. I could not move the slide back at all and neither could the range safety officer. I had to take it to a fun smith to get the round out then I shipped it back to S&W with a letter. They still have it after a week so right now, I do not know what the status is. Super disappointing to have a brand new but defective S&W pistol!
Sorry to hear this. Thankfully my issues resolved by locking the slide back and leaving in that position for 24 hrs to loosen the springs. That and loading the mags and leaving them loaded for the same time @@philscott4378
Sweet shooter , I have the 30 super shield plus … 14 +1 with the flush magazine
I would rather have the ruger lcp max, I think QC is better with ruger over Smith and Wesson
@@user-on9bg4fl9e never bought a Ruger but heard good things
All the RUclips channels sound like they are reviewing the last greatest pistol like the news media is touting the current last new presidential nominee. Showing anything negative is not condoned. Good review.
That’s a nice little pistol,S&W has been knocking it out the park lately in my opinion with there latest releases!!!
This was the first review I have seen of the Bodyguard 2.0 that seemed to be unbiased.
Well done.
Finally a good comparison! Great job🎉
Excellent review!
Great review- Thanks for comparing it to the Glock 42. Was think about replacing mine with this new S&W but, for me, the fact that its smaller is the deal breaker. I've had to add grip girth and a plus 1 mag to my 42 to make it shootable (because I like shooting it a lot). That being said, this S&W looks like a great 380 and everybody is different and I'm sure it'll be a great fit for a lot of people.
You can see in his side by side that the grip on the BG2.0 is a good finger longer than the G42's even though the guns have the same overall height. So that should help.
I do not pocket carry. The smallest pistol I ever carry is a P365. However, I just really want this little pistol. I guess I will get one to just play with at the range.
Making my Beretta 80X nervous.
LCP killer.
About time, now we need a revamped m&p with this high of an undercut. This is another reason p365 is so popular, its the lowest bore axis due to highest undercut.
Nice review, mine comes Tuesday; the magazine button is also ambi
Thanks for another great review
Thanks there is lots of positive buzz on the 2nd generation bodyguard...3 finger grips rule...
I'm hoping to get a used trade in of the M&P version, I actually like it. The longer trigger pull doesn't bother me in a pocket pistol, you just need to practice with it.
I wish they kept it double action only
That or just made it a double stack .380 version of a S&W 3913.
That's silly
@@jeffomspaugh6691 I like throwing the DAO, hammer fired in the pocket w/o a holster when I check the mail. I haven't bought this yet, but I'm going to need a holster when I do.
I think mine has an issue. Sometimes the slide gets stuck when I rack it back, making it nearly impossible to eject a round. Shot 100 rounds with zero issues though
Yeah I gotta get one this weekend. Noticed your PDP at the range table. Love mine
YOU WILL BE SORRY
I think you're right about the sights. This is last resort, backup, *up-close & personal* _tool!_ I seriously doubt anymore will be using this beyond 5 -7 yds in a self defense scenario.
Thank you for covering the grip size/shooting bottom left stuff along with the Glock 42 comparison (wasn’t my comment, but a pleasant surprise)
Think I’ve been convinced there’s not enough of a difference to trade in mine (especially given the room on the grip), but I won’t contest that S&W 2.0 has now got the king of 380s in the Bodyguard 2.0
You know what else would not affect concealability much, but increase accuracy and ammo performance? A 3.9 or 4 inch barrel. Kinda like the 365XL or Fuse concept, but for 380. As easy to conceal, Less recoil. It'd kick the 380EZ's ass. Width and grip length are concealment's enemy.
Great video - seems like a good fun. I wonder if micro .380s are the new micro 9s?
When you feel the quality of the BG2.0, it certainly seems that way…
The 2.0 is just a baby M&P which is why it's so good
Some other reviews mentioned that the rear sight is zeroed too far left from the factory, this may be contributing to your shooting left
That M&P looks like it was made in a high school metal shop. New one looks great.
Excellent work
I like my M&P BodyGuard precisely because of the DAO trigger.
If I choose to, I can just drop it in the cargo shorts pocket of my choice and it will be carried safely. Even if my Chapstick gets in the trigger guard (chapstick carried in off side pocket) it won't fire.
Orange fingernail polish on the front blade, white on the rear.
I'll probably buy this 2.0 later, but don't expect what it's not supposed to be.
I really like the LCP Max, but i cant stand how cheap it feels. It makes me think it could fall apart at any time. I'm looking forward to handling the BG and see how well it's built.
Such a great gun
Wonder how well it will fit in a pocket
Thanks brother!
Well thank you for talking me out of considering the new model. The Keltek in 380 with less than half the capacity was awesome and ran great. It's how many years old?
14:59 Like most of my M&Ps the full mags can be “hard” to seat properly. Not terribly hard but if you’re in a life of death scenario, seconds count. I usually keep my back up mag with one less round. The thought here, the full mag seats fine and quickly with the slide open. But with the slide closed it’s “hard”. So with a chance of my grip being high and riding the slide lock keeping the slide forward after empty, I carry one less in my backup. Plus this is also handy because I can use my full back up mag to rack a round in the chamber, take it out (becoming a “one less” back up mag) and then put a full mag in. Ready to go.
Also the magazine sleeve on the larger mags are loose and can get snagged while putting them in (just barely if they get dislodged) so it’s not a bad idea to adhere them if they are a back up mag. Don’t know if it’s like that on the .380 but my M&P compact it is. The full size mag has the sleeve that’s removable so you can use it in the full size. I believe my shield 2.0 and plus mags are the same but not sure why since it’s not a smaller version of a larger like the compact. That being said, now the plus mags fit in the bigger EqualiZer (the upgraded M&P EZ).
Long comment, I must be on the 🚽
Very good group on that last mag! I don’t understand why companies don’t spend more time on the feed ramps, especially on these small pistols.
I went to two places today [Academy and Bass Pro], looking for this gun, and neither had any in stock.
I had a lot of light primer strikes with my original Bodyguard, I hope this one's more reliable.
I have both bodyguards and this one is 100% flawless and 10x better that the original bodyguard
@@willelliott4593Awesome! Just out of curiosity, have you tried ball and hollow point ammo?
I got a bad one. I took out the recoil spring and it would not go back in, no amount of pressure will get it to compress. Contacted Smith and they are sending me a new recoil spring assembly.
I like the U notch rear sight on my LCP Max but it appears it may be too wide on the Bodyguard 2.0. One owner and one other YT channel reported their 10-round mags do not lock open on last round. I've read S&W mags sometimes need breaking in so that one can get last round in them. Some recommend using a loading tool to make it easier. So the mag problem you mentioned may follow but it is the first time I heard of it. Please add comparison of grip length from the trigger guard down in the future. It appears to me on Handgunhero comparison tool that the Bodyguard has a more aggressive undercut on the trigger guard than the LCP Max so it should provide more room for one's pinky finger. Also compare the bore axis. It appear to me in comparison of the two at Handgunhero that the Bodyguard also allows a higher grip much closer to the slide that should reduce muzzle snap greatly compared to the LCP Max. The are a lot of LCP Max owner that would like more direct comparison videos to the Bodyguard so that would be an appreciated review. Many bought the 75th Anniversary Edition of the LCP Max this year due to aggressive pricing. They and owners of prior models are considering replacing their LCP Max handguns with the Bodyguard 2.0. The 3rd reason the LCP Max appears suffer in comparison is it does not have a good trigger. Some replace it with one from MCarbo or Galloway Precision. Thanks for the good quality review. It may have been the best one I have seen regarding details.
Some s&w handgun magazines have little feet on the bottom of the follower inside, if you trim those you can fit that last round in there easy. Did this mod on my shield plus mags no issues and super easy to load to max cap.
Great review but the BG 1.0 came out in 2012 I know cause I bought it when it first came to my local gun shop.
Anybody know if the 2.0 sight dovetails are the same as the original Bodyguard?
looks like it's a really big improvement, followed Ruger with their LCP Max. gave up on the the 1.0, even though i really wanted to like it. was so easy to pocket, double strike. but terrible to shoot.
was hoping they wouldn't extend the grip on the 2.0 like Ruger did with the Max. would've been OK with reducing the capacity to 9 or even 8, as long as they kept it super tiny. but i'm thinking i might switch from a Sig P238 to the BG 2.0, if the recoil is even better than the Sig P238. hope i can find it at the range to try out.
The Bodyguard 2.0 beats the The Glock 42 in all regards except one. The barrel is 1/2" shorter. This really affects performance in a marginal caliber like 380 acp.
Proper self defense rounds would have no issue.
Fmj rounds would likely perform similarly on soft targets as well
Thanks enjoyed the video great job
I like how your thumb curls nearly 90 degrees.
Great channel.
I really like the new bodyguard. I think i want to wait on the performance center version. Maybe they will add an integrated laser as well.
As Sootch said, aside from the potential of "Slide Bite" S&W did a pretty good job.
Smith & Wesson seems to have a problem with their double stack magazines loading to the advertised maximum capacity. I have a Shield Plus with the same problem of cramming 13 rounds into the magazine and the first round not feeding. Could it be a defective magazine design? There’s a guy on you tube that claims to have solved the capacity problem by shaving a bit off the follower. To be safe I load 9 rounds into the 10 round magazine and 12 into the 13 round magazine of my Shield. I’ll test the Bodyguards 10 and 12 round magazine for any problems with fully loading it and stripping off the first round
What holster would be best for this firearm
I know it’s a 380..I have the Ruger Security 380..and LOVE it. I would like this one as a good conceal carry..but I have read the slide is.not easy to rack. Is this true? Thanks.
I took mine home and 15 minutes later it was on its way to smith and Wesson. Won’t cycle manually. The slide was getting stock for some reason. Paid 400 bucks for it and I can’t use it at all for at least another money! Shame.
I really wish they would have put the m&p on it and had the m&p grip texture. They done the same thing with the original bodyguard 380 buy not putting m&p on but eventually did.
My main problem with 380 is JHP is not consistent in the short barrel. If it expands there is insufficient penetration and if it doesn't it acts as an FMJ. I am looking again but considering fluted bullets not JHP. JHP needs a longer barrel. I had the Sig P238 and it was a very nice pistol but still had the short barrel. I ended up carrying FMJ. I was looking at the G42 with 3.25" barrel but the only JHP that was consistent in that barrel length was the Federal 90 grain FTX Critical Defense. 2.75" fared worse.
Federal doesn't make critical defense!!!
Hello Hammer,
Very nice pistol yes
Apparently the rear sight needs to be drifted out to remove the backing plate if you want to clean out the striker channel. Bummer. Plus the shape of the sides on the bottom of the sight where you would normally use a punch on to remove the sight is shaped so it would be near impossible to use a decent size punch to do the job.
These are going to sell like hotcakes.
One thing I am wondering about, is if that stippling texture along the side of the gun at the finger index location (and on the takedown lever) is going to snag on pocket holsters and make this gun hard to draw from a pocket without the holster coming out on the gun. I don't see how it won't snag and create a lot of friction on the draw, especially on any of the common nylon style pocket holsters.
We owned the original BG 380. It was horrible in a lot of ways. Feeding, trigger feel. But worst of all, no matter the ammo we tried, EVERY mag would have at least 1 light strike / failure to fire. Sold it quickly.
I love the look, but I got a 9mm Shield which, "in my opinion" is just as good or better. or even the 9C (1.0)
Manual safety is a must for me
agree
S&W offers one (the "TS" version) for novices.

How does the backplate on the rear of the slide get removed if you wanted to clean the striker channel or something? It looks like a different design to a regular M&P.

Hearing too many issues to run out and buy it…test of time I guess.
How does this compare dimensionally with a Shield? I suspect it's not materially smaller which argues in favor of sticking with 9mm.
