  • In this video, I look what is Biodynamic Wine.
    Biodynamic wines are wines made employing the pseudo-scientific biodynamic methods both to grow the fruit and during the post-harvest processing. Biodynamic wine production uses organic farming methods (e.g. employing compost as fertilizer and avoiding most pesticides) while also employing soil supplements prepared according to Rudolf Steiner's formulas, following a planting calendar that depends upon astrological configurations, and treating the earth as "a living and receptive organism.

    I've been watching quite a lot of videos on organic, biodinamic and natural wines. This is the best one so far I've encountered. With technical information that no other video provides. Approaching the subject with a slightly aroma of skepticism but with no hint of agenda or sarcasm. Kudos and cheers!

    A clear concise informative and balanced account.. Thank you, Grape Explorer.. I'm inspired to delve further into the subject.. If you get a chance to try any of the Saumur wines of Domaine La Paleine they are some of the most amazing wines I've ever tried. It was also interesting to hear from Michel Chapoutier at the last London International Wine Fair that one of his rationales behind biodynamic is to create wines completely expressive of vintage / that particular harvest, rather than merely the best possible grapes that command the highest cost price.

    I just had a fantastic biodynamic pinot nero from Dolomiti, north Italy, by winemaker Alois Lageder. Fantastic.

    Excellent👍👍👍👍. Agree wholeheartedly that sustainable viticulture in monoculture farming makes perfect sense. I’ve had some (certified or grown as biodynamic) great ones, Foradori, Wiemer, Felton, Lapierre, COS, .... do you have any you particularly like? Thx again for a great vid.

      Thanks. I had a Sav Blanc from a South African producer (who's name completely escapes me) that I really enjoyed.

    I agree with the premise, but it's a little funky for me at the extreme end. Whenever I think about biodynamic, I think about my close conservative Jewish friends. They explained that Kosher wine has really strict rules about farming, production, and consumption because wine was used symbolically in religious ceremonies to the Roman gods and practices during Roman times - think ritual offerings. I can't get beyond that image whenever I think of biodynamic wines.

      Extreme indeed. I'm actually visiting a Biodynamic vineyard in a couple of weeks to keen to get to speak directly to some winemakers using this technique.

    Just curious, I wonder if they use any clover patches through the vineyards which would provide nitrogen and added bee attraction

    Great video!! Is an Ecological vineyard the same as biodynamic farming ?

    • @TheGrapeExplorer
      @TheGrapeExplorer  4 года назад

      I will depend on the practices of the vineyard. Ecological vineyards will still promote the wildlife elemts but may not go so far as to use specific (and somewhat unusual) preparations.

      It's all down to the plant cycles and some of the more unusual soli preparations

    Interesting reading about Pseudoscientific biodynamic: wordonthegrapevine.co.uk/biodynamic-viticulture-pseudoscience/ "Steiner claimed that black people were distinguished by an “instinctual life”, as opposed to Caucasians who were to be distinguished by an “intellectual life”. Furthermore, he believed each race had a geographical location where they should live and considered black people in Europe to be “a nuisance”. As if this were not enough, Steiner also suggested that there were a hierarchy in races and that a soul with good karma could hope to be reincarnated into a race which is higher up in the hierarchy No surprises which he thought were the inferior races."

      That has nothing to do with an agriculture method and is short-sighted.
