    After a decade, I still come back to this video to have a good chuckle 😂 Anyone who can get so excited about catching obese fresh stockies in a manicured duck pond is not a real flyangler. To brag about it like Malcom and claim he's an expert, well that's just pure comedy 😂😂

    Great film of how to catch the bigger fish at Lechlade - and good advice for all stalking waters. Thanks very much, I enjoyed it. I would love to have had a shot of a selection of flies used though. I see you were using bugs but a look at them would have been nice - maybe next film..? Best wishes, PB

    Nice job! This type of fishing reminds me of fly fishing the fall river in central Oregon. It's crystal clear and there's plenty of 15-20 inch rainbow trout to be caught outta the deep pools and some get bigger than 25 inches. The method is similar, I swing a large heavy fly (sculpzilla or wooley bugger) with a tiny nymph attached, lifting it in front of the fishes face to get a strike. On Saturday I caught a 20 inch rainbow, a 17 inch rainbow, and broke off on another large rainbow.

    Love Lechlade .its just a great place to fish ,but i have noticed a lot of video's are being made from the bank where the normal angler is not allowed to fish from in front of the house, this is not a complaint just an observation, the drainage pipe that makes a nice flow from the corner.i suspect churns out some nice food for the fish to wait for, i know you can and have caught fish from all around the lake .but what i would give to be able to have an hour in that corner great video though 10/10

    Hi piscator3444, Lechlade is a catch and keep fishery. We catch and release where we can but many stocked fisheries in the UK are catch and keep. Please have a look at our Yakima River drift boat fly fishing or even our fly fishing the river wye for grayling films as you will see that we release healthy fish when we can. Many Thanks. WTV

    Further more, anyone who says they "chuck" a fly is unfit to hold a fly rod or experience the joy these beautiful fish bring to those lucky enough to share a few moments with them. Go get some power bait, a few cans of generic beer, flip on some country music and grab your spinning rod so you don't disgrace our beautiful, elegant sport anymore.

Which specific model in this video are you referring to when stalking? Other than that keep up the good work. 4 wt rods cannot put enough pressure on a big fish, causes lactic acid build up which requires a very long revival time and then the fish might still turn belly up. During the fighting process, a trout, like any athlete under physical stress, builds up a lot of lactic acid. ... Once a fish reaches “acidosis,” or a point where the lactic acid buildup is non-reversible, it is only a matter of time before it dies.

    • @billhowe863
      @billhowe863 7 лет назад

      Would love that, but our days of traveling are long past, thank you anyway.

    • @suchabadkitty1293
      @suchabadkitty1293 Год назад

      I was very surprised to hear that he was PURPOSELY using a 4 wt on such big fish. But then I was also surprised he was killing such a nice fish as well. I was yelling "Put it back! You're gonna kill it!!" But then he starts holding it by the gills so...yeah.
      As a flyfisher in the US it's rare to see other ff's keeping trout, especially big ones. They arent even the good eaters. I will occasionally keep a few smaller Brookies or stocker bows for the fire, but a huge Brownie like that? No way!
      Sure would love to fish that water tho. Gorgeous place!
      So I guess the lactic acid doesnt matter much when the fish isnt being released.

    Look at all the people in the comments giving it Barry big plums......the majority of trout fishing in the uk is put and take fisheries. Not everybody either has the time or local wild trout accessible to them. Pure joyless characters I see on every RUclips fly fishing video saying only your way is the right way. If you want to stand in waders with your two weight rod stalking wild brownies then big thumbs up to you but no need to be such a bunch of pricks to everybody else who doesn't conform to your standard of fly fishing

      Peter rob wells you seem to either lack the intelligence to grasp my initial comment or you are continuing to be a prime offender.....let’s put it simply then pal.....why come to a video of stalking big trout at a big fish water if you don’t like it? Why click on the video in the first place if you clearly take issue with it? Nobody here cares about your opinion mate....you can attack as many people as you like who come to this video as they are interested in the subject matter and as I can see from the other people who have answered your grumpy elitist comments nobody else seems to care either. You make too many assumptions from comments mate....just because the guy here is at lechlade you assume he cannot fish Any other way....canned hunting in Africa is a poor example too those animals are drugged and get shot by people with lots of. Only no matter what, a trout can choose to take a fly or not. I have caught a few double figure trout at small waters but this does not mean I have not caught a multitude of different species in salt water as well as fresh water using multiple different methods....the bottom lime is it’s another big trout video with people spouting bollocks about what they think is the only correct way to fish....don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out pal

    Very interesting take on stalking big fish, clever and well presented, no indication as to what flies, and to leader type. you got it in almost perfect conditions so it will help the thirsty angler/non angler for a double figure stalked fish. A little more on tackle and flies would be helpful to those who choose to follow this path, but well done on what you presented. Not for me though , a bit sad really.

      Maaike Cox it is Stillwater fishing and definitely the wrong type of guy to pick (this dude is totally wrapped up in his own little world that he is special when he’s just confined to Stillwater fishing) it is a sport and difficult at that but it is difficult at that just this is showing you a very specific example of easily biting fish and fed and built up in stock fish farms he just needs to expand his fishing to wild trout and actually go to different places rather than thinking he’s some big shot in this Stillwater fishery (but don’t think all Stillwater fishing is easy because it’s not) just this is such a bad example 🤦🏼‍♂️

    I think that fishing for stocked fish is definitely the way forward. Its sustainable and gives the natural stock a chance. Its good for business and adds to the economy. Wild fishing is great in areas where there are an abundance of fish. But it seems a shame to fish for (salmon and sea trout) where i live. They are like a natural heritage and have been spawning in the local small rivers for thousands of years. Even catch and release here seems unfair. It bothers me that people poach/fish/kill the natural stock, when there is absolutely no need for them to do it.

    Why kill a creature of that size. You can't eat it so why not return it unharmed to the water . Does it matter if your estimate of 18lb is slightly out. I would never kill any large brown trout - last year I had a lovely circa 6lb brown off Rutland water and it was really great to see it swim off unharmed. IMO anglers would get far more satisfaction by seeing large inedible fish swim off unharmed than banging them on the head.

    Okay Folks. First of all, this fish will be a triploid and will be sterile - no babies!! second of all you need to get your heads around the importance of wild fish and looking after this valuable resource and farm reared fish which are bred for stocking and catching. If you think that all fish should be returned as some sort of being nice to animals thing then you shouldnt be hooking them in the mouth and pulling them into a net, a bit hypocritical eh?
    If keeping the fish it should be despatched quickly. If returning a fish treat it gently with wet hands and dont take it out the water if possible. you can get great photos laying the fish down your forearm on top of the water. im sure this guy will steak this and eat it like salmon. It will taste just fine. Focus your criticism of non catch and release on people who needlesly kill wild fish and educute our “catch and releasers” to handle the fish correctly.

    Many years ago I owned a commercial trout fishery called Rainbow lake in the Cotswold water park, after intense pressure from the fly fisherman we introduced a catch and return policy.. heaven forbid .I saw fly fishermen unhook there trout drop them on the bank and flick them back into the water with the toe of there boot...also they would throw trout back in the water when ten feet up a bank...our rule was barbless hooks and then gently return the fish to the water reviving it slowly.
    A pre stocked lake can support up to 100 trout per acre, my lake was 10 acres so would support around a thousand trout...when fish have been caught and returned to the water a few times( should they have survived the experience) ..they become hook shy and almost uncatchable...so the fishery owner ends up with 150 fish per acre which the lake cant substain with natural food.. and the fish start to loose weight and look scrawny which upsets the anglers. .so he introduces a none catch and return policy....with me so far..... now with regard to the huge brown trout in Lechlade most trout over 10lb would die if returned to the water after fighting for its life through exhaustion let alone how the new angler to our spor returns it...as for skill factor catching these huge fish...when hooked you have got to land your prey and that requires great skill...in my humble view................................Mike Jones.

      That is absolutely right. In the beginning of my flyfishing I sometimes went to a simulair c&r trout stocked pond. Man the trout I sometimes caught had 5 tiny little flies in the mouth!! with really really thin fluorocarbon ends. Wich al lot of fishers secretly used because these fish had seen every fly there is.So to catch these very stressed fish you needed way to weak and therefor thinnest tippets. Anyway it made me change my mind about Catch & Relaease in stocked ponds anyway. Also lots of half blind and zombie fish.Rotting alive by contact of mens hands......The rules where btw only to touch/grab the fly and keeping the fish in the water.Well I could. But Ive seen lots of guys quickly grab the trout anyway. The owner was very stricked on rules but he could not oversee everything ofcourse.

      My local fly fishery spring hill in tumbridge wells has a mixed catch and release ticket. You catch and kill 4 and then catch return 4 so there are always new fish coming through the lake. I enjoy catch and release fly fishing and I always take extra care to release the fish in the net and use barbless hooks. I have fished one lake which is primarily catch and release and the fish were in a shocking state as you would expect. There is a stunning little fishery in Surrey called freshman which does the best catch and release fishing I have experienced they have tons of water moving through the lakes and have about half of the anglers doing catch and keep. It saddened me to read your comment about the anglers kicking the trout back in the lake.....I always take an extra minute to make sure the fish recovers

    People from outside the UK must think this all we have in the UK. Actually apart from Southern England, Britain is probably one of the better places to flyfish for wild trout in the world. There are so many rivers and wild lakes, especially in Wales and Scotland. You can catch some big wild browns in some rivers and lakes and then there's searun browns ( our steelheads. ) I find this video embarrassing. He seems like a novice. I'd been excited with that fish if I was 14 but I've matured a bit!!

    Fair enough it's a catch and keep fishery, but, 18lb+ brownies is a specimen in anyones standards. Should be returned to the water

    Look at this 'guide' .......he probably has not ever caught a wild fish in his life......talking all this nonsense like a 'pro' how to catch a stocked trout in a puddle.....lol......who on earth would be THAT bad at fishing that they would need a guide for this?? Literally in tears laughing here......

      susan webster wow your opinion is rather a sad one. You assume because i did this film i dont fish for wild fish on rivers.....you are wrong. And i suggest you keep quiet before you know exactly what you are talking about.

      Lol I know Malcolm personally and he manages a stretch of the river Avon... so yes he is an expert and catches as many wild fish as he does stocked.

      @Jonathon Roberts at no point did I say i was a guide!.... i guess my river fishing and england loch style cap means nothing then. You are just another keyboard warrior who has nothing better to do.
      If you dont think this is right then best you come and talk to me and we can discuss my 30yrs of fishfarming and fishery management then. And we can put this to rest.
      Btw please dont write swear words on a public post just remember kids can read this.

    'wilderness' TV? What is wild about this fishing??! This artificial fishing is an absolute joke and not sporting at all. Huge obese fish that are hungry and naïve and easy to catch in a tiny lake. There are plenty of wild lakes and rivers with wild gamefish in UK.........why this?!

    LOL, a managed fishery where trout grow to 20lbs - what a joke. I'd rather catch a 6" wild trout over these artificially large, trapped in a puddle specimens, where you have to kill the fish. This is as bad as the "hunts" they have in South Africa where they're on a managed, fenced in, private reserve where the animals are baited and the "hunters" sit in a comfortable blind overlooking the bait, with a perfect angle, about 20 feet away. Wow, what skill! This is a disgrace to the sport.

      most trout fishing in the UK is put and take. they are not allowed catch and release and have to kill all fish. very few trout ponds there allow catch and release.

      Hi Luiz. We fish 3+ times a week and take fish to eat maybe once month. They make great food and being stocked lakes means less wild fish are taken. Tight Lines. Nicky WTV
