Rick - I worked on preproduction for Get a Grip in 91 - Steven one day played and sang "You See me Crying" top to bottom on his Korg keyboard alone in the studio with me in the control room - it was incredible. When he was done he looked up and asked me what album that was on -"Wings or Toys" - so I told him Toys - he said "oh yeah - thats right" - what an incredible thing I will never forget

They asked why I was leaving SXM when my trial period with them was over. I told them they only play the same 30 old songs the Rock radio stations would play. And my CD collection is much better than there’s and I can listen to the whole album or play a much better song line up than they ever played. Rick you are absolutely right about early Aerosmith. Aerosmith, Get your Wings, Toys, and Rocks are absolutely kick ass. These are timeless hard rock albums that can't be dated, just incredibly bluesy, funky, and heavy at the same time. Even the first album is well produced. First Aerosmith album was released in January 1973, not 71. Steven Tyler has stated that No More No More is his favorite Aerosmith song. Done With Mirrors (1985) was the last "pure" Aerosmith Album, one that didn't use outside writers. Aerosmith did a tour once where they played an entire album side from Toys, Tom Hamilton told me at a meet and greet that it wasn't well received. Can you believe that?

"For “Walk This Way,” Perry plugged into an Ampeg V-2, a 60-watt tube head with several unusual features, including a pair of 7027A power tubes and an EQ section featuring a Baxandall circuit for treble and bass along with an active midrange section with a selection of three different center frequencies: 300, 800 and 3000Hz. This was a house amp at the Record Plant that was used on numerous notable sessions.
For Perry’s main rhythm track (which can be heard by panning to the left; Brad Whitford’s parts are panned hard right), he used a double- cutaway Gibson Les Paul Junior with a single P-90 pickup and boosted the V-2’s midrange - set to 800Hz - to provide the proper grit, growl and howl. He also used the Les Paul Junior to overdub the first solo, but for the second solo and outro he switched to a late-Fifties Fender Stratocaster. He begins the second solo on the Strat’s bridge pickup, but starting at the outro’s fat, sustained note bends (around 2:45) he switches to the Strat’s neck pickup and engages a Seventies Maestro FZ-1S Fuzz-Tone (a.k.a. Super Fuzz) to further thicken the midrange and make the guitar “sound like an electric razor.” -Chris Gill/GW

      @AM-pu2vb Месяц назад +1

I actually own that exact Ampeg V-2, came into by sheer luck about 10 years ago...
these amps are amazing anyway and I've owned a few, but this one is definitely magic, especially through an old Marshall 4x12 like everybody used to do back then including myself.
This amp was also used on almost every track on Get Your Wings, and was used by countless other players at TRP, like Hunter/Wagner, R. Derringer, Etc Etc.
Joe's fav setup was this Ampeg top with Marshall cab, and his red DC LP Junior.
One small change: For the outro Solo in WTW, Joe did use his old strat, but the amp was a tweed twin, also a very popular house amp there...I don't remember who owns that now.

Great track. Of all the great rock n roll bands, I think Aerosmith changed and improved their songwriting and recorded band sound the most between their first record to in this case, their 3rd record. It’s like they were a different band on Toys compared to Dream On.. except of course, Stevens voice was instantly identifiable on the first record but the rest of the band improved and polished up real fast.. what two years after their first record, they recorded this album with Jack Douglas and everything was so much better on production, mastering, arrangements, songwriting, guitar sound, etc.. Toys is just an amazing record. On ‘Dream On’

Toys, Rocks, and the most overlooked album they ever did... Night In the Ruts. Truly at an all time low for the bands spiral into addiction and dysfunction, which to me makes that album the most heartfelt, honest emotional piece they have ever done. First look at Rick, excellent review my friend.

I’m getting on a bit now (64 today) and loved nothing more in life than my music since just a small boy. I think you’re correct in stating that there are a few absolute ‘must haves’ in any vinyl collection. I suppose it’s depending upon personal taste, for example a person who’s into Irish folk music will perhaps not appreciate AC/CD.
However, for a basic rock start up there are so many definite must haves, for a bit of fun, here’s merely a few rocking must have’s from my old album collection:-
    Zeppelin (vol 1/2/4)
Sticky Fingers/Let it Bleed/Exile on Main St. - Stones
    Silver Dollar Forger - Nazareth
    Vol 4 - Sabbath
One Of These Nights - Eagles
    Any Doors album
    Fire and Water - Free
    Abraxas - Santana
Made in Japan - Deep Purple
Spiders from Mars/Aladdin Sane - David Bowie
    Cars - Cars

This album is stacked with great songs, start to finish. "Rocks" was also great as the follow up, and was heavier, but "Toys" will always have that special place for me. “Toys” on 5.1 Super Audio CD is a fun listen. The separation of sounds on the intro to “Sweet Emotion” in surround sound is phenomenal.
And yet, I was actually a moderate fan of “Pump” which came 15 years later and I still marvel at the production (MTV video included) of a track like “Janie’s Got A Gun”. Just an awesome, haunting song in my opinion.

“Round and Round” is the only song I can think of where, listening on headphones, the outro vocal refrain literally sounds like it’s spinning around my head -not just back and forth across the stereo field but AROUND. I believe it’s the result of clever use of panning, faders, and EQ. Check it out, it’s mind-blowing. (Again, headphones are a must to appreciate the effect.)
Those guys did some crazy stuff on the studio that is often overlooked. (The faux live audience on the back half of “Train” from “Get Your Wings” is another example of novel studio trickery.)
