My grandfather was a Conductor on the NN Ry between the late 1920s to 1940s, and he worked on the school trains that were pulled by #40. When my grandparents were married, they honeymooned on (Pres.) Jackling's private car "Cypress". Many of my grandfather's photos of the NN Ry. are in the Arcadia published book on the railroad.
@@michaelwolters3592 Yes, there were no schools in Ely. The schools were 12 miles north of Ely at McGill, NV. McGill is where the concentraters and smelter were to process the copper ore. The children from Ely rode the train to McGill to go to school every day.
The late Mr. Richard Reynolds who had been the passenger service director for Western Pacific was the man responsible for the resurrection of steam passenger service on Sierra Railway and Nevada Northern. Rest in peace Richard, thank you for all you did for those of us who savor steam.
40 was originally gonna be pulled from service just days from now but last week they Nevada northern announced that the FRA/federal railroad administration has allowed an extension for 40 to continue running til late October of this year and after that she'll be pulled for real this time for her next rebuild and I'm not sure if this might happen before or after she's pulled but Nevada northern 81 might return but only time will tell when but for now let's be happy 40 has 5 more months to run til her next rebuild. So want to see her before that rebuild but I'll see what happens since none of us even know when the quarantine will end
Nevada Northern was one of my favorite preserved railroads as a kid. I still need to get out there one of these days for the charters. Great coverage as always!
Very good job you are a great railroad photographer I love how you don't dress it up with music you let us hear the locomotives beautiful scenery I like how you captured everything good job man peace out have a great day
This was filmed by my friend Hunter Lohse back in 2014. He won the annual rail photography contest and was given a free pass to the winter photo event. It was all he could talk about for weeks! :P
One of my favorite iron horses I remember from my video called thunder on the rails was always Nevada Northern number 40 she is always a pretty looking Baldwin and a real Thoroughbred too
Great shots, especially doubheading. I have a long time question. When one or more engines pass through a tunnel, how do the crew handle the smoke packed in such a little space?
For what seems like the longest time, I have wanted to take a trip out to Ely, Nevada to take a trip on this train and see the museum. I'm a little afraid to travel over that part of Highway 50 by myself in a car though. Are there any buses that go into Ely?
I have been to Ely several times to volunteer working at maintaining, repairing, and restoring the locomotives or anything else they want me to work on. I have always driven (though I come from the North down highway 93) because when I researched the issue in 2017 I found there was no commercial plane, train, or bus service to Ely. Ely is supposedly the most isolated town of any size in the continental US. If highway 50 is anything like Highway 93 though, it really isn't a bad drive. Barring Winter weather the roads are in good shape. Traffic is light but there is some so if you have a breakdown somebody will be along without waiting too long. I do take some extra food, water, and fuel just to have more options available in case of a problem but I have never had to use them.

Wait a minute, they had a “school train”?
Thanks for the story

Pure railway emotions... Great!
Glad you enjoyed
# 40 has always been my personal favorite. I'm still waiting for a model railroad manufacturer to make a scale model of this "Black Beauty".
Glad you enjoyed
Fantastic! My favorite shot has always been both 93 and 40 coming out of the shed putting on a show
Glad you enjoyed

Wow this is so cool! Makes me envious of previous generations who got to see these trains regularly! Wish we still could. 😡
Glad you enjoyed
I love it when the 2 come out of the shed together
That's always a highlight for these photo specials

Great cinematography. I don’t normally watch steam videos but these are always great.
Glad you enjoyed
Awesome! Anther of my favorite railroads, the Nevada Northern.
Glad you enjoyed
Excellent video! You got some very rare footage! Thanks for posting it. The Northern Nevada RR is fantastic, especially in the winter snow.
Thanks, Hunter did an excellent job
I like the flying air pumps look on the locomotive.
Great video, steam locomotives always look great in the snow.
Glad you enjoyed
Much enjoyed, thank you for sharing. Greetings from the UK, Bob K.

Best video I’ve seen from
The Nevada Northern Winter Photo train. Don’t know when but one of these years I’ll make it!
Glad you enjoyed
Especially the steam crane operation, you don't get to see it that often.
But what was it doing?
@@nightlightabcd Putting a car back on the track.
also just steam loco operation in general in the winter
perfect little film....took some organising to achieve this. Thank you.
Great video, and fantastic scenery!
Thanks
Brilliant footage.

Thanks
Very nice video, great scenes I enjoyed it!

It's a rather elaborate technique of closing the cab windows and covering the face with a cloth

Is number 40 still there? Remember seeing this place first as a kid on a VHS called "thunder on the rails"
Number 40 has never left. It was running on the winter photo shoot this past weekend.
Lovely video, very well done, big thumbs up + sub. Greetings from Denmark :)
Thanks
These locomotives are almost like living creatures
Agreed
If the railroad is the Nevada Northern why is engine #93 lettered as N.C.C Co.?
Nevada Consolidated Copper Company, a subsidiary of Nevada Northern. The 93 operated on that line for the majority of its career.
Did they operate it In 2019?
Yes, they run it every year
I wonder how often the Nevada northern operates 40 and 93 each year?
It's pretty regularly, check the website

2 locos moves forward.
Nice video! But I wonder, are they moving around their rolling stock for this video! It must be costing them money to move around empty cars all day!
It's a photo special. Photographers are all over for photos and videos
I like the 40 version of that
Not many operating steam cranes left in the world!
Les apaches attaqueront le convoi et le train sifflera trois fois. C'est bien ça, non ?
I am so stoke i mit have a sroke cm
